almost like you can't hear it anymore. good morning, you are watching "fox and friends first" on tuesday morning. jillian: we start with extreme weather. tornadoes ripping through several states paving a path of destruction overnight. look at this twister in oklahoma. >> two funnel clouds at the same time over oklahoma and look at this giant twister in west texas. millions of americans bracing for more severe weather right now. >> janice steen tracking this live from the weather center. >> we won't know the damage until later today or tomorrow because we have obscured rainfall and that could present more danger because you can't see the tornadoes coming and

that is why we say keep your weather radio on in case the power goes out and you have no way of knowing the watches or warnings. we have a dozen reports of tornadoes in areas we reporting yesterday across the plane states from texas to kansas and missouri. all the ingredients we need for severe weather outbreak have been in place including the cold front, the low eject in from the rockies and all that moisture from the golf of mexico so we still have tornado watches in effect. a lot of lightning with the storms as well so potential for not only severe storms but lightning and heavy rain all. that could be the legacy of this storm, the flooding. we have watches, tornado watches posted from texas toward missouri and here is your forecast. this line of storms moving across the mississippi river valley over the next 6-12 hours. behind it, incredible amounts of snow, very cold air mixing with that warm unstable moist air from the gulf of mexico and you have a recipe for disaster in these areas.

's numbers are dismal. look at the 2016 election, black american voters, we had a 20 year low down under 60% from 2012 where we had an all-time high of 60% voter turnout. when it comes to 2020 democrats need to gain more votes than they did in order to win this election. it will be difficult of someone like mayor pete were to pull off a primary win. how could he faced our president who is gaining when it comes to independents and democrat who didn't vote for him in 2016, approval numbers are up with these people, not republicans. when we look at the economy that coupled with rising approval numbers it will be difficult. he will never be donald trump in a general. jillian: minority votes will be important. whoever is facing off against donald trump has do need to get those votes. my question to you is what should and can mayor pete and others at the bottom of the polls, what can they do right now? what should they be doing? >> make sure their message resonates and be the opposite of what donald trump is doing. joe biden saying we have to get

to the soul of america and save it. shannon: why do you say the opposite of what the president is doing because he has support in minority communities? >> a few and far between. of 5 african american women are concerned, 2% support. black women are very consistent in our vote patterns. we the people who speak out for the marginalized. that message donald trump has does not resonate. jillian: we looked up these numbers, from may 11th-14 of this year, 30% of nonwhite registered voters approve of how the president is doing right now. >> this is the direct result of many things, not just the economy. in 2060 people were skeptical of the present, particularly minority communities. after 20 years of his presidency they recognize he means business and has a lot to impact the lives of the

american people of all races, all background, all genders and some of those things, not just the economy. what he has done for americans disproportionally affected by years of failed policy specifically of americans. look what he did with 14% increase in funding for hpc you. he has been an incredible president for everybody in this country, 3.2% gdp growth the first quarter of 2019 which is unemployment down, 65 year low for women, all-time low for many minorities. doing a great job and people see that. jillian: still early but now is the time the work needs to be done on the campaign trail. rob: 38 after the hour. kamala harris has an idea to fix the gender wage gap. >> holding corporations accountable for transparency and closing that gap. there will be penalties if they don't.

there are flaws in capitalism. you can be a capitalist and identify these problems. the things bernie sanders says that even capitalist make sense. a lot of companies squeezing their employees trying to get their earnings higher and higher and their workers making less and less. companies use to take care of their people and they don't do that now. used to get a country club membership if you got a good job in the 80s, that doesn't happen. people are being squeezed. how do you fix that part of it. that's giving socialists their leverage. >> the lag of the last we 10 years and policies in place that made it impossible to invest in workers. we started to see that change with the advent of the tax cut in washington. and hit the labor market, and millennials, and they can take their labor to another job because there were 7 million
