security studies president jim hanson led counter terror operations in the special forces. he joins us now to weigh in. first on this day we would be remiss if we didn't say thank you for your service. we're glad to have you because this is a very high stakes important moment. what do you make of the meetings we have just seen with regards to mr. abe and president trump? >> president trump is making a full faith effort to try to resolve these situation in north korea peacefully. that's the right thing to do. some people have been giving him a hard time because is he praising kim jong un and appealing to his vanity in a lot of ways. that's a technique. that is a negotiating technique with him. he is aware there is a threat. obviously you can come to the table and see the gleaming skyscrapers in north korea's future or see a rain of tomahawk missiles coming. trump is offering him the

first and that's why. griff: some say prime minister abe is more concerned with short range missiles than president trump. it appears the two leaders couldn't be more on the same page when it comes to denuclearizing. >> you use negotiating techniques good cop bad cop. security advisor john bolton have said those missiles are concerning. president trump says said okay slonks they are snoght shooting longer range ballistic missiles and no tests there are grounds to go forward. he is trying to draw kim jong un. in that's a smart way to operate. griff: take to you what the president had to say about progress with iran. listen. >> look what happened since i terminated the iran deal. look what has happened to iran. iran, when i first came into office, was a terror, now they are pulling back because they have serious economic problems. we have massive, as you know massive sanctions, i'm

sergeant kevin mandraky part of the independent fund. asha cass silbery to the united nations and will major in the u.s. army reserves. thank you for being here and service. >> thank you. pete: start with you big picture, as you think about memorial day where is your head at? >> a lot of people tend to think about barbecues and drinking beers on the weekends. for me and i think for the rest of the country we should be remembering the folks who, you know, gave everything they ever had and everything they are gonna have for this country and that's what i like to think about this weekend. pete: absolutely. asha, what about you? >> i think about freedom and moral courage. i think about those that are serving now, especially in places like iraq, afghanistan syria and they are away from their family members and, you know, we 1% that are actually serving in

the military. and this is still going on right now that we are at war. so i definitely think about those service members that are currentfully combat. pete: great point. kevin to you. we just found out before this panel started you and i served at the same time more or less the same place. you know, do you reflect back on that time period on a day like. this all the time. and actually i just was at the retreat funded by the independence fund and the v.a. and got to be with all those guys and really reminisce on all the times we had good and bad and i think, you know, today is just a day to remember all the fallen comrades that we don't get to see anymore. pete: na addition to remembering them, it's livings worthy of that sacrifice. i'm going to put you on the spot here. you had a fun announcement this morning. >> yes. me and my wife haven't told anybody yet but we are expecting another baby. we don't note sex yet. pete: now have you told a lot of people.

>> yes. pete: congratulations. i love that. that's part of the full life i think those that gave so much would want everyone else to celebrate and embrace moving forward. you think our nation properly honors? have we learned the lessons say of what we did of the vietnam generation? are we doing it right these days? >> i think we continue to get better and better in terms of the way that we treat american combat wounded, the way that we treat vietnam veterans and i think yeah, we are on the move in the right directions in terms of you who we treat our war dead. pete: asha, reading this on a card you recently did a 30 month deployment in the middle east. >> yes. pete: the longest deployment i have heard of. you have done your part. you have been there. take off of what danny just talked about. as a nation, do we really understand fully and appreciate what folks like you are doing on our behalf. >> our nation does appreciate our vets but they still are at big learning

curve on what it is to transition now goes through some of the challenges as a veteran. we still are on a big learning curve when it comes to challenge of unemployment. homelessness. mental health. so, you know, we should continue going through the direction and learning about our challenges and programs that help address. pete: absolutely. kevin, how is the morale of folks currently serving today? >> currently serving today? i would say they are pretty high right now. i think they have a -- they know we have got their back. i think it's a good time, you know,. pete: good to be on top. >> yeah. pete: it's true. is part of that morale a reflection if we are going to go in for wars in the future we want to go in to win it. >> yeah, exactly. not to just hang out and have a presence.

op-ed you wrote. what is your message to america today? >> one thing i always want to remind people during memorial day is that the folks that we're trying to remember, the people in uniform that we're trying to remember, is that, yes, they are people and when they sacrifice their lives for us, to me it is more than they just sacrifice their lives, they sacrifice their future, they sacrifice their hopes, they sacrifice their dreams, what they were going to do, the ideas they were going to have. they gave those all away, gave away their dreams so we could live our dreams. that is something very meaningful. the guys i lost on the battlefield, mark lee, ryan jobe, even when we returned from the battlefield, losing chris kyle and most recently my brother seth stone, who was killed in a parachuting accident, these guys, they gave everything they could for their country and, for those of house

served along side them every day is memorial day. we think about them every single day. i think about them every single day, try to live my life in such a way that honors the sacrifices they made. pete: jocko, that is a good point. you talk about the brothers that you lost. what do you choose to remember about them? >> that is another thing very easy to slip into. it is easy to slip into being sad about what happened and feeling morose about the situation and it's good to always try to remember how awesome these guys were, how funny they were, the kind of jokes they made, clowning around, pranks that we played on each other, what i tried to remember on top of the sacrifice they made. these guys were fun loving guys had a great time doing what they did, wouldn't have lived any other way as warriors. jedediah: jocko, i loved your op-ed, i found it incredibly

moving. one line i want to read. for you will dream often, and dream big and pursue those dreams as you would have pursued your own dreams relentlessly and not fail. what a beautiful message for all of us that want to serve those to lost our lives. >> these are words about individuals that literally gave up their dreams so we could have our own dreams. for us to squander the opportunity is really to let them down to disparage what they did for us. absolutely, dream big, do everything you can in pursuit of those dreams. griff: dream big. jocko, i took away from your op-ed, you're asking you to remember the heroes not for how they died but for how they lived. >> absolutely. again, a lot of types it's easy to get caught up in the sadness of the situation but at the same time we got to remember that everyone of these guys that i was friends with, that i lost, these guys were just funny,

incredibly motivating, and just, just fun-loving people and to think they were just these hardened warriors out on the battlefield, that is what their life consisted of, that is just not true. these guys were not, they were all a bunch of comedians, all funny and all lived life to the fullest. pete: the books you have written, way of the warrior, i bought them for my kids. contrast to the wimpy kids. check out the kids, all the carriers i'm told are named after brothers you served with or lost in combat, correct? >> the way of the warrior kid series, the main character is mark after mark lee. i wrote another book for younger kids, mike and the dragons, that is named after mikey mansour. i will go through the whole crew. make sure they're all remembered in that way. jedediah: thanks so much for being here. you strike a beautiful balance

challenge, in memory of fallen navy seal mike murphy who was killed in afghanistan in 2005. we have crossfit head coach and a marine corps veteran. i'm so excited for this. tell us about the challenge. >> the challenge started in 2014. essentially, lieutenant michael murphy was killed in action in afghanistan. so every year, memorial day we come together, as a community, celebrate his salute to service. so we're looking forward to it today. consists of one mile run, followed by 100 pull ups, 200 push-ups and 300 squats and another mile run. we'll do a modified version. jedediah: modified version is condensed version of that whole thing. >> exactly. >> actually work out, we do it with weights, we'll not do that, unless you choose -- pete: throw away the vest? we'll do it. guy like murph, med doll of
