>> one thing they're running out of. >> shepard: jon stewart excoriates congress on making sure the money doesn't run out. joe biden is coming for the president and president trump is hitting back. the former vice president and democratic frontrunner for the presidential nomination next year is set to speak in davenport, iowa. this morning his campaign released a transcript of his prepared remarks. it's not subtle. some democrats are sticking to policy and plans. biden is attacking the president. the campaign reports that joe biden says that he believes president trump is a threat to america and is mishandling foreign relations. a quote here. "did he do anything to signal

that he's prepared to walk away from the thugs his embraced from putin to kim jong-un? no. he did none of that he gets up in the middle of the night to attack bette midler, the mayor of london, the american speaker of the house. it was a stunning display of childishness for the whole world to see." the former v.p. will address the tariffs the president imposed. he says president trump doesn't get the basics. he thinks tariffs are being paid by china. any beginning economic student at iowa or iowa state can tell you the american people are paying his tariffs. the cashiers at target see what's going on. they know more about economics than president trump. analysts say biden is signalling to democrats that he's the man that take on trump on his own terms that he's the frontrunner. he spoke last hour and began the attack. >> four years of donald trump

peter? >> shep, a month ago, the last time joe biden came to iowa, he slugged off the threat of china saying the chinese are not competitors of the united states. today an about face. he says china is a threat and he thinks president trump should be tougher than he has been. >> we should be rallying our friends to take on china's abusive practices around the world. i mean our friends in the region instead of alienating them, whether it's south korea, japan, any of the other folks in the region that have been our allies relative to china. improve our defenses so companies don't have to give tech capability. >> joe biden is back in iowa for the first time since historic floods left my farms under water and as the levels go down, climate change is a part of his pitch to attack the president. he gave a shout out to greenpeace protesters that had a

sign that showed he's in the middle of the pack on climate. he doesn't think that is right and tonight he will elaborate to say "still trump denies climate change. what did he tell piers morgan in that interview?" it reminds me when he tweeted in the winter since it was cold outside, there's no climate warming. how about when he said the way to deal with california fires, rake the leaves. biden is expected to tell iowans, it's clear that trump is shredding what we believe in most. we have to restore the basic values. some people think that's a return to the past. i don't see it that way. it's embracing the values that have made america america. i don't think that is taking us to the past. for me, it's the only way america will have a future. at one point, biden was interrupted by pro testers shouting about abortion. as the person started to boo and

his, biden told them to stop. this is not a trump rally. something about the frontrunners crowd today, they set it up to have a few hundred seeds and overflow people standing nearby. that is much smaller than similar events that the president has had and candidate trump had in the same part of iowa. >> shepard: crowd size. peter doocy live with us. thank you. president trump made clear today he knows about what biden has planned for tonight. the president even talked about the thugs as biden called vladimir putin and kim jong-un. the president says he got a new beautiful letter, a very nice letter, a warm letter from kim jong-un just yesterday and said their relationship is good. that kim jong-un has kept his word and the north korean dictator and murderer gets it. of course, the president hit back at joe biden. saying he won't make it out of the democratic primary. his low energy, that president obama picked him up off the

trash heap and former vice president biden is a dummy. john roberts on the president's response live from the white house. john? >> we're a long way away from the very first primary to listen to biden and the president today, you'd think we're already down to a two candidate general election race. biden's campaign fired the first shot early this morning releasing an advanced copy of his text in which he said that president trump posed a threat to the united states as the president was headed for council bluffs, iowa. i asked the president what his response to joe biden was. this is what he said. >> i heard biden is a loser. he never got more than 1%. obama took him off the trash heap. looks like he's failing. looks like his friends from the left will overtake him soon. i'd rather run against biden than anybody. he's the weakest mentally.

there big papi slumps to the ground and he takes off and running. ones of the most famous athletes in the d.r. and crowds of well-wishers went to the hospital before he left for boston. molly line is live with more outside mass general. molly? >> david ortiz as you mentioned beloved by red sox nation. he came back to the city that loves him as well to continue his recovery. his wife putting out a statement earlier this morning through the red sox. tiffany ortiz writing david arrived at mass general hospital last night. underwent a successful second surgery. he's stable, awake and resting comfortably in the icu where he's expected to remain. tiffany ortiz went on to thank the red sox owners, leadership, doctors and staff. she thanks for all of the support. the couple had been married 17 years. they have two children. ortiz has a daughter from a prior relationship. this investigation ongoing after the 43-year-old's father was

ambushed in one of the baseball legend's representatives calling an act of hired killers. police tell our team on the ground the investigators are interviewing witnesses, studying video footage. police still working to establish in the man they have in custody, feliz garcia is the shooter or drive. he's being treated after being beaten by fans. many have poured out good wishes for swift healing. >> hard pressed to think of anybody more beloved than david. you can imagine how this is impacted the red sox organization. i know how its impacted many of you who are here that love david. and it's a very difficult day for the organization. >> ortiz retired in 2016. there's no doubt that he's a legendary figure here in the

city of boston. larger than life. he helped the red sox win and for the big personality, he was someone that helped the city heal after the boston marathon bombing and there's many people wishing him swift healing as he returns to the city. shep? >> shepard: including a lot of yankee fans. big papi, we love you, too. the ortiz shooting the most recent incident putting the d.r. in the spotlight. four minutes have died in hotels while vacationing there. jacqui heinrich reporting live. jacqui? >> shep, the fbi is involved. now the world health organization and the cdc are doing tests. since last june, six american tourists died on the idea. three deaths in may triggered the investigation. a pennsylvania woman collapsed and died and then five days later, employees found the bodies of a maryland couple at the property next door after they missed checkout.

all three had the same cause of death including fluid in the lungs and enlarged hearts. the state department confirmed another death in april. a california man that was staying at hard rock in punta cana. concerned families of two that died at the hotels last year, a pennsylvania woman and a maryland man. according to their families, three of the six people had drinks from the mini bar before they died. none of the toxicology results have been released. we checked out a mini bar. what is unique here, the bottles are full size. they're not mini. they're up sid down with a nozzle to pour from as opposed to a single use container. a distributor said they appear to have been refilled. the dominican travel ministry said the deaths are not related and the company owning the properties put out a statement slamming the media. trip adviser suspended reviews

you don't. you made me come down here the day before my 69th round of chemo. i'm going to make sure that you never forget to take care of the 9-11 responders. thank you for your time. >> shepard: well, there was a standing ovation. there was a standing ovation for a dying hero there. lou alvarez is a retired nypd detective who duty bound and honor forth rushed to ground zero. went straight there. didn't ask any questions. he spent three weeks on the pile as we called it. the remains of the area after the attacks. he breathed in the toxic dust like everybody else after being told everything was fine.

18 years later, he's racked with stage four cancer. he was there with other heros of the day. 9 heros that are sick and begging congress to save the 9-11 compensation fund which is out of money and facing cuts. they had the support of jon stewart. he brought along the jacket of his friend, ray fifer, a new york city firefighter that spent his final days fighting to security medical care for recovery workers and responders before he died before 9-11 linked cancer. jon stewart called off lawmakers in an emotional speech. >> what an incredible metaphor this room is for getting healthcare and benefits for 9-11 first responders has come to. behind me, a filled room of 9-11

is a high school student blocks from ground zero or 9-11. she was sent back to class less than a month after the attack while the pile was still burning. >> i haven't had my 20th high school reunion yet. i already have five former classmates with lymphoma that i know personally. >> the compensation fund started in 2014 with $7 billion less than $2 billion is left. it's scheduled to stop paying in december 2020. this despite the fact that many thousands of first responders were just added to the eligibility list and many thousands are expected to develop cancers in the years ahead because of the toxic air they breathed while serving the city and the nation. jon stewart was among those imploring a subcommittee to extend the program and make sure assistance is given to all that need it as long as they live. >> there's not an empty chair on that stage that didn't tweet out

o'connell, i think sometimes it became difficult to not let that emotion spill out. that was just -- it was a tough day. >> shepard: are they mad at them? >> i think it's disspiriting. i don't know if they're necessarily angry with them. i think they're resigned to this idea. the character of the men and women that we're talking about, they're resigned to fighting for the benefits. not even for themselves but for their fellow broergs and sisters that are still suffering that aren't getting the same -- they slashed the benefit by 70% as you heard in the testimony. is my life worth 70% more than his life because his illness gestated for a longer period of time. >> thanks for having us, shep.

the reduce the benefits by 70% to conserve it because of the amount of people coming on the bill. what we're saying, just renew the vcf fund. there's no fraud. it runs beautifully. it's an incredible program. look, this was war. these are the casualties of war. we can't stop supporting them because they can no longer serve us. that is not an imaginable outcome for this. these guys will continue to keep fighting. i've been down here with bob and kenny and these guys for years. kenny was on my show in 2010. that's almost ten years ago. he came back in 2015. it's imaginable. >> shepard: who in congress and in that subcommittee to which you were speaking today is pushing back on extending this and having full benefits for

these victims? >> i would say it's the so-called fiscal hawks who despite passing a $1.5 trillion corporate tax cut for exxon now claim that the percentage, which is basically a rounding error off of the deficit, is going to maybe blow up the country ten years from now. it's irresponsible, it's disingenuous. i told kenny earlier, if i read you some of the tweets and quotes that these individuals write about these 9-11 first responders and how we owe them such a great debt and how our freedom is based on their character and their struggle and turn around and vote the bills down, the hypocrisy is stunning. >> shepard: what can people that care at home and want to become involved do practically speak something. >> a great question, shep. i'll ask these guys. kenny, what do you think people can do at home to get involved

with this if they need to? >> well, today -- politics is a game. unfortunately it's a game of life and death. i believe today's hearings went so well that we're in field goal range now. we really need the senate to step up now and become part of this. become part of what's going on here. get behind it. look jon said earlier, the tweets, they don't matter. the accolades of we will never forget, they only go as far as the social media site that you post them on. then once you write your last sentence and put your period, it's over. you close your facebook page and move on. that's not good enough. we're not going to stand for it anymore. jon did great work. we have a lot of people behind us. this is going to happen. this was an excellent day of

these great men and women go home in peace and not have to spend their most valuable commodity as they're ill. that's time. that's all we're asking for. >> shepard: vcf is the victims compensation fund. that's what its commonly known as. if there's people pushing back to what do they use to justify it? right after this happened, they didn't have time to wait for answers. it was the government that told us all the air is safe. the government told us that. >> no question. everybody down on the pile, all the students that came back, all the survivors that decided to stand their ground in that neighborhood and not allow themselves to be cowed by a terrorist act and stayed in their homes were put in grave danger. i'll never forget the smell. the fires. what was burning. we knew everything from asbestos

to mercury to concrete, they were ingesting it and breathing it in. it's done up told damage to all of these guys. a lot of what we hear down here and this will blow your mind, this is a new york problem. a new york problem. as though, you know, we had gotten hit by some type of hurricane or something along those lines. which even if that had happened, the country should be willing to stand up. this was a declaration of war. we have used the attack on 9-11 to, you know, generate all kinds of policy and spending. somehow when it comes down to the first responders and the trade unions and the volunteers and the survivors, all of a sudden, hey, man, it's your neighborhood. it's not our neighborhood. i'll never forget -- the reason why i work so hard on this, i feel like i can never repay the

debt that these men and women gave to not just new york city but to the country. by their moral courage and actions, they showed us what was so worthy of our country. why it was so important for us to fight back. i feel like i can never repay that. that's why we work so hard. it's why it hurts so much to hear them dismiss it as a regional issue. >> shepard: you seemed particularly angry that they weren't in their seats to hear from them. >> that drove me nuts. you know, they kept saying it's a subsubcommittee. there's still people on the subsubcommittee that aren't here. either 9-11 is a priority or it wasn't. your deeds have to at some point match your tweets and your words. today it didn't. it's our hope, all of us, that their deeds will match it

sue, file a lawsuit to enforce subpoenas tag former white house counsel, don mcgahn and the attorney general, bill barr. the vote on whether to hold them in civil contempt. now just yesterday, the democrats in new york, jerry nadler agreed to delay a vote on holding the attorney general in criminal contempt. that was part of the deal to let the committee look at certain evidence from robert mueller's investigation. if you let him look at the investigation, all the underlying details of the investigation, then we won't hold you criminally liable. or in crime contempt. but sources at the justice department tell fox news it's not a blank check here. the chairman nadler will not get whatever documents he wants. still nadler says the committee will have access to the special counsel's most important files. that's according to nadler, including evidence of possible corruption of justice. remember, in his 400-plus page report that everyone in america

should read, everyone, robert mueller laid out ten instances of apparent obstruction of justice. the special counsel did not exonerate the. they said they could have they would have so they didn't. mueller explained that if he and his team had confidence the president did not commit obstruction, they would have said so. he also said that under justice department guidelines, charging the president with a crime was never an option to him. he said the constitution requires another process. now house democrats are set to get their hands on documents that could lead to further action. today's vote could pave the way for legal action against those that do not comply with subpoenas. let's get to catherine herridge live with more. hi, catherine. >> we've had a series of debates the last couple hours. that sets the table for the vote we expect about 45 minutes from now. and then a news conference with democratic leaders of the house

committee. kind of a victory lap. most people expect this vote to go along party lines. this resolution would allow house democrats to sue in courts for compliance with the subpoenas from the attorney general, william barr and don mcgahn. >> we're willing to try to work with the administration, but we're not willing to have a jelly spine. we're not willing to wreck the constitution and assign the rule of law. we're still pursuing mcgahn, the chief of staff, hope hicks and mr. mueller should come before the committee so that we can continue to do our work. >> republicans counter that they believe the democrats are unlikely to prevail if they do sue in court on issues that relate to executive privilege as well as getting access to grand jury material. that was heavily redacted in the robert mueller report.

john radcliff says the deal brokered yesterday between the justice department and jerry nadler was for records he says that were already available to democrats, but they refuse to read. here's the congressman. >> the key evidence that jerry nadler talked about is the same evidence that the department of justice has been offering to democrats for some time now. again, this was about jerry nadler trying to save face in the face of a democratic base that is wants him to take action. >> if you read the resolution carefully, you will see it's not a contempt resolution but that's not stopped democrats from freely using the word "contempt" as well as impeachment. >> so what the democrat is doing is they're trying to get to impeachment without having their members vote on it. >> nobody is above the law.

top offenders in terms of plastics pollutions but other asian countries are. according to a 2017 report from the nonprofit ocean conservancy that says "over half of land-based plastic waste leakage originates in five countries, china, indonesia, the philippines, thailand and vietnam." sri lanka is another major offender. andrew wheeler says the trump administration wants to put plastics research into action. listen here. >> we're committed to take a look at the pilot programs that we've all done individually and figure out what are the best pilots to go to the next level with those six countries to try to make sure that they are reducing the ocean plastics. >> the nonprofit ocean conservancy has previously laid out a plan which in the short term, shep, talks about improving plastics collection and stopping dumping.

it takes to take care of their furry friend. so like you mentioned, out of those that lied to their bosses to leave work, 65% did so because they didn't think their boss would believe it or think it's a valid excuse. it's common for pet owners to treat their friends like extensions of their family or children. 39% of those surveyed admitted to taking the entire day off from work to spend time and take care of their pets. it's not just about work. a lot of people tend to flake out. three out of ten pet owners surveyed did say they have cancelled times with friends just to stay with their animals. there's a few other interesting statistics. the most commonly weird item and perfect timing, pets eat a lot of grass. 32% of the pet owners said they found their pets eating toilet paper. another 32% found that their pets had eaten bugs at one
