defense secretary, patrick shanahan saying the u.s. needs to make serious plans in case tensions get even worse. the u.s. not only accusing iran of attacking oil tankers but also of detaining one of the ship's crews and blocking tugboats from taking the damaged vessel away. tehran denying it all. president trump says there's no doubt iran is responsible and he claims this video is proof. according to the pentagon, this is iran's revolutionary guard removing a mine from one of the ships to hide the evidence after it failed to explode. the president called into this channel earlier today. >> iran did do it. you saw the boat. i guess one of the mines didn't explode. probably got essentially iran written all over it. you saw the boat at night trying to take the mine off and took it off the boat. that was exposed. that was their boat. that was them.

they didn't want the evidence left behind. >> u.s. officials tell fox news after the explosions, iranian gun boats surrounded a tanker and forced the crew to surrender. the 23 crew are now being held in iran. they appeared on iranian state tv thanking iran for its hospitality. u.s. defense officials released this photo claiming it shows an unexploded mine attached to one of the ship's hulls, this comes weeks after attacks on four other tankers. the pentagon blamed them as well concluding iranian divers and fast boats placed mines on the ships. they claim john bolton is trying to sabotage diplomacy. jennifer griffin is reporting live for us at the pentagon. jennifer? >> trace, fox news has learned a

separate iranian tugboat came out and attempted to tow the japanese-owned vessel but waived off by the u.s.s. banbridge. an unexploded mine was later removed from the tanker by the iranians according to the u.s. central command that released video of the incident. the u.s.s. mason, a second destroyer, has arrived on station to support the u.s.s. banbridge and help protect the japanese-owned tanker. the two tankers remain roughly ten miles apart in the gulf of oman. earlier today, u.s. officials told us four tugboats contracted to pull the norwegian-owned tanker, have been prevented from doing so but i rannian gun boats that have surrounded that striken tanker. at first, the iranians put out a press release saying they rescued all 44 of the sailors on the two disabled tankers. officials tell us one of the two

tanker crews were in fact detained by the iranians thursday after being rescued by another merchant vessel. one of the crew spoke earlier today on iranian state t.v. >> i'm from russia. the service was excellent. they hosted us well. everything was fine. >> only 23 are present in this video. the navy said they rescued the other 21 from the oil tanker that was attacked. it's important to remember the 23 detained by iran have been held for two days against their will, trace. >> jennifer, what else are we hearing from patrick shanahan? >> shanahan just spoke at the pentagon and did not name iran by name. >> 15% of the world's oil flows through the strait of hormuz. we have to make plans in case the situation deteriorates and broaden support for this situation.

>> u.s. central command released this photo showing what it says is an unexploded mine attached to the hull of one of the tankers attacked outside the persian gulf thursday. part of the evidence that they've been rolling out to suggest that iran is behind this attack. this video also released by the u.s. military shows what it claims as proof of iran's involvement. this iranian revolutionary guard boat removed the unexploded mine from the hull. iran denies any role in the attack. >> jennifer griffin, thank you. investigators say the iranians attacked it with a limpit mine. the mines were developed by the british during world war ii for use during covert sabotage operations put on shines by divers or teams on small boats. the devices are magnetic so they can be easily attached to the hull of a shop and often hollow so they're easier to transport

and use under water. some are set off with a timer while others only explode after the vessel its attached to travel a specific distance. limpits were used in world war ii. iran is no stranger to limpit mines. they were use in the 80s during the eight-year tanker war with iran and iraq where the two nations attacked each other's tankers in the gulf. its believed that limpit mines were used in the may attack off the coast of the united arab emirates. the u.s. pointed the finger at iran for those attacks. let's go to michael hanlin. the video that the military released of the iranians taking away one of these limpit mines

is compelling evidence. agree? >> i certainly agree. i'm an american. there is that 5 or 10% of the world that will be willing to say oh, it was a deep fake or it's the same cia doing the analysis that thought saddam had nuclear programs. so we're going to have to expect that some people will be unpersuaded. i think virtually all of the broader middle east will agree with us, virtually all of our nato allies will accept this. other people will be inviteded to do their own assessments. it's not just the physical ed, it's the broader pattern of how iran conducts these attacks. the operational sophistication and the lack of other culprit. some people say the saudis were trying to plant this to get us into a war with iran. that theory will have a certain life on social media. yes, i find the video and the broader argument of our government quite compelling on this front.

there's no doubt in my mind that iran did this. >> any chance that the revolutionary guard did this without the ayatollah's consent? what do you make of that argument? >> it's possible, but i tend to think the good cop bad cop approach with rouhani talking to the prime minister of japan is part of a strategy. they need more leverage probably in their own minds. they use violence to get leverage. they've done that for 40 years. they're in a tough place. the united states is squeezing them so hard economically and they don't really want a war with the united states. if they were to conduct a big terrorist strike, we could retaliate in an unpleasant way. they're looking for the sweet spot to respond with some violence, some effect on the world economy and hopefully get us to relent on the imposition of this zero export policy that

we've got towards iran. i think they all agree this is desirable from their point of view. >> looking forward, michael, when they talk about military action, we're not necessarily talking about u.s. military strikes. we could be talking about things like escorting ships through the strait of hormuz. is that a fair assessment? >> it is except when these fast little patrol boats get close, you can't let them keep getting close. remember what happened to the cole in the year 2000. so i think that an escort operation at some point creates some protected areas around a ship and tells any ships that might want to approach don't come any closer. you get one warning shot. the second one we're shooting to kill. so actually going after these patrol boats in one way or another could be the logical next step, if this kind of violence continues on a iran's part. even an escort operation could

police were seen in an area that we haven't seen them searching before. a lake and recreation air in avon where they were spotted with dive teams and dogs. divers were seen going in and out of this marshy area. dogs were seen sniffing around the perimeter and police used motorized rafts to aid in the search. this area is close to a water ski lake down the road. dulos was known to be an active move of the ski club. and in farmington, he's returned after being released on bond. so dulos pled not guilty to tampering with evidence and hindering the prosecution charges. trace? >> what do we know about the new questions about one of the trucks? >> the timing of his black pickup truck's location could prove relevant. futos dulos told investigators that he was not in the new caanan area when his wife went missing.

his attorney pointed to phone records of an overseas call and a meeting a lawyer that he had this day as proof. but now we learned that he may have swapped trucks with an employee that day. i spoke with that employee's attorney that could only say his client is cooperating and not considered a suspect adding the man no longer works for futos dulos company. he used the black pickup of his boss to work at a home under construction and then returned it to dulos. the truck was picked up in video surveillance by a neighbor of futos dulos in farmington the day in question and it was that black pickup truck that was spotted in hartford after jennifer was reported missing. tomorrow, trace, will begin the fourth week of search efforts to

find this mother of five. back to you. >> trace: laura ingle live. thank you. we know that bots, trolls and fake accounts lurk across social media sites like facebook and twitter. the 2016 election exposed that. what about linkedin? the associated press dug around the professional networking site and found a vast majority of sites that don't exist. that is raising flags with national security officials. jonathan hunt is here with more. jonathan? >> trace, it's really difficult to tell what is real and what is fake in these. the linkedin profile identified as fake by the associated press with the help of several tech experts who is very convincing. if you're looking at it on your phone or laptop. katie jones has a network of highly respected contacts that presumably added her to her networks assuming she's real. it's the photo according to the experts is what provides the

clues that it is fake. a halo effect on the woman's hair is a clue. a scale effect on her ear and smudges on her cheek. hard to see that. more oven, the background is closely cropped. if you look closely, you can see her earring is blurred. signs that it's computer generated, not real. the fear is that on a platform like linkedin, governments or individuals can launch a spying campaign via fake profiles. linkedin says it's constantly scouring for fake accounts and shut down thousands already this year. >> trace: what do the experts say the fix is? >> a bunch of experts were on capitol hill for a hearing on these issues. their views seem to be that it's close to impossible. >> i feel like our panel will be in heated agreement that there's no silver bullet. we need a combination of law, markets and resilience to get

find a break through cure for childhood cancers. we begun a public healthcare campaign to eradicate aids in america once and for all. that is taking place like nobody would believe. we're looking at a ten-year plan. at the end of ten years, we'll be in good shape. who would have thought that was possible a short time ago? we're making dramatic strides in combatting the opioid epidemic. we have it down by a period of almost 17% this year. when i heard it, i thought they made a mistake. i said you are not real. that's not a real number. it is very much a real number. so kellyanne and all of the people working on that, that's a tremendous achievement. we've worked with the medical profession and with doctors and everybody. to think that it's 17% in one year, that is a tremendous achievement. thank you very much. wallace, "fox news sunday" anchor. interesting that he gave her a shout out. people were calling for her job. the president says no, her job is safe. she will stay exactly where she is. we were talking about the president's comments earlier this week to abc, chris. you were making good points saying why would the president even answer these types of questions? the one from george stephanopoulos against getting dirt from a foreign country on a political opponent. why even answer that. the answer seems to be that he just cannot resist a fight on whatever level it comes in at, chris. >> yeah, i mean, just look at him today. first of all, he seems to be in a mellow mood celebrating his 73rd birthday and talk about the successes of his administration. there's a number of them. the economy obviously going great guns. unemployment very low. wages increasing. relative peace around the world.

we have this flare-up that we'll be talkn't about sunday in iran. this goes back to the issue, a lot of people say if except for the kind of self-inflicted wounds, this president's approval rating would be in the mid 50s because by the normal standards, he's got a strong record to run on for re-election. he gets into these really unforced errors like answering a question about would you take damaging opposition information from the russians that special counsel says that didn't happen. why answer whether you would hypothetically or earlier this week when le talked about under his offices, the cia wouldn't try to spy, use the dead half brother of kim jong-un as an informant. again, why get into that whole fuss? so you do kind of wonder if the president exercised more discipline, my guess is he would be doing even better

politically. >> neil: senate majority leader mitch mcconnell was trying to give the president some daylight on that topic. he was asked about the foreign comments of dirt. mcconnell is like just dismissed him saying look, the democrats won't let this go. so we have to let it go. i think he's trying to tell the president, come on, just move on. let's all move on. >> that's a perfect example. mitch mcconnell is nothing if not utterly disciplined as a public speaker and in interviews. i've had hem on "fox news sunday" a number of times. you will ask him a controversial question. he will give you an answer. if you press or ask it a different way, he will give you the same answer within two or three times, you say i guess that's all i'm going to get and you move on. there's a value to discipline. as a reporter, i'm not fond of it but for a public figure, can it be useful to say what you want to say, talk about the subjects you want to and ignore the stuff -- accentuate the

positive and ignore the negative. >> trace: yeah. i know you're going to talk about this sunday, this dust-up with iran. we hear about military intervention in some capacity here. what going forward when you talk about this on sunday, what is your interest? what are you looking to glean? >> what happens next. we're going to have an interview, a live interview with the secretary of state, mike pompeo. the u.s. and iran have been blustering at each other. iran says we might interfere with the international oil shipments through the persian gulf through the strait of hormuz. you've seen six tankers that have had mines or explosions, been attacked and caused serious damage. sure looks like the iranian fingerprints on it especially when you have the navy footage that showed an iranian boat trying to take off and unexploded mind off of the hull

of one of the tankers. what will the u.s. do? impose more sanctions? perhaps doing what ronald reagan did in the 80s, to have tankers escorted by u.s. warships. it creates a hair trigger situation, but at least back then, i remember this vividly, a lot of concern. it's too dangerous. is it too provocative. but the iranians backed off. it's one thing to take on an unarmed tanker. it's another thing to take on a u.s. warship. they backed off real quickly. >> trace: yeah, the iranians have tried to walk this back saying this was not united states. we were not involved. there's some confusion and skepticism that maybe it's the republican guard in charge of this and not president rouhani. thanks, chris. good of you to join us. >> my pleasure, trace. >> trace: chris will have more of this sunday after another busy week in politicses with

outpouring of anger and grief. people demanding answers, demanding justice. two years after this took place. as you pointed out, this will now be heard in u.s. courts with u.s. companies being blamed. the tower is at the heart of a neighborhood, beside one of the richest parts of london engulfed in flames. today on the second anniversary, doves were released to each of the victims. memorials and vigils were held and emotions gave way to anger with calls for justice, politicians. it was newly-added cladding on the exterior of the building. this week, 200 grenfell families filed suit against american firms that were produced with the cladding and whirlpool he that made the fridge freezer that is believed to have started the fire. the companies have denied culpability and will defend themselves in cord.

mass live. driverless semi trucks could be hitting highways in florida next year and the systems won't have to be tested, inspected or certified. that's according to the suit florida sun sentinel which reports that the new law will go into effect july 1. phil keating reporting live from our south florida newsroom. phil? >> trace, for floridians and tourists coming down to the sunshine state, don't be too surprised in the future if you look at the big rig next to you and there's nobody in the driver's seat. supposedly these robot trucks will be safer than all the others. san francisco-based tech compani compani companies starsky robotics have been testing out the trucks. the trucks drive themselves using cameras and radar to stay in the lane, up to speed and avoid everybody else. last month, starsky set the

record for autonomous trucks hitting 55 miles an hour. the company session they should be ready for long haul customers late this year and plans for regular daily truck runs next year. there is a human element. for the first mile and the last mile, there will be a person driving that truck but from a remote office at a desk. all the miles in between, the truck is on auto pilot. nobody else on the road has the right to know. florida republican governor ron desantis signed the bill into law which removes the old requirement that a human had to be in the cab even if the truck was driving itself. the new law does not include state regulations. it will be up to companies like starsky robotics to self-inspect for safety. starsky claims the trucks will be safer than a all the other ones with human truck drivers because it removes the possibility of human error. there's currently a long haul truck driver shortage. days are long, 11-hour days staring down the highway.
