>> dana: thank you for bringing us an update on that story. we appreciate it. we just got our week started. it's monday. i will see you in a few hours on "the five." things were joining us, everyone. i'm dana. here is shepard smith. >> shepard: it is 3:00 p.m. on the east coast. tensions with washington are appearing to escalate. the iranian regime is now signaling that they will break the rules of the nuclear deal from which the united states removed itself after the u.s. accused iran of attacking drones. plus, the has joined twitter 25 years after the murder of his ex-wife and her friend, he created a twitter account to set the record straight and settle old scores. the school district is about to begin testing students were nicotine. not just athletes. kids in the marching band.
12:01 pm
reporting begins now. >> "shepard smith reporting," live from the fox news desk. >> shepard: here's where it stands. mike pompeo was headed to the united states central command in florida to meet with top united states military officials. this comes as iran has stepped up its uranium supply and in turn is ratcheting up red-hot tensions with the united states. a spokesman for iran's atomic agency, announcing that the country is just ten days away from busting through the limit of uranium that is allowed to stockpile as laid out in the nuclear deal. of course, president trump pulled the united states out of that deal. iran is also threatening to boost the purity of its uranium up to 20%, which essentially means it's just a step away from the level required to produce some sort of nuclear weapon.
12:02 pm
all of this after the united states blame iran for bombing it to oil tankers last 30 and international waters. they have denied any involvement. mike pompeo said there is no doubt that iran is responsible. now the pentagon says that they are also behind the attacks of u.s. drones in recent days. we will have more on that in just a moment. first, some u.s. allies, including some involved in the nuclear deal, specifically germany and japan at least say they need more proof to determine whether iran is actually to blame for the tanker attack. so far, the pentagon has put up just as video, which they say proves nothing an end of itself. they say it shows iranians removing an unexploded mind from one of the ships. others leave that up to determination. more proof is on the way. in the meantime,

jennifer griffin reporting with the latest on the drone attacks. rich edson, live with us now. what can you tell us? >> they say it secretary pompeo is consulting with allies, officials within nato, the european government, arab governments, china, about the attack on the tankers last week in which the state department says iran is responsible. state department officials say that they want to the international community to step up the pressure against iran for the range of its activity. the israeli prime minister says if iran does eventually violate the agreement, if they do violate that 2015 deal, then he expects that the world community should respond with sanctions as the united states has done, withdrawing and restoring sanctions against them. those that are still part of the iran deal say they are monitoring iran. they are monitoring their
12:04 pm
nuclear activity, and they are hoping and expecting that iran will stick to that 2015 nuclear agreement. they want those european governments to help them circumvent american sanctions. they want them to do it, or else they say they are going to begin violating that 2015 deal. they say for now the sanctions against iran are still on, and they say it is for that range of activities, supporting militias across the middle east. ballistic missile activity, and they blame them for the attack on those couple of tankers last week. >> shepard: at the same time, some democrats are criticizing the trump administration for lifting the nuclear deal in the first place. >> that's right. they say it was contained at least for a period of time when they were part of the agreement, and that has all changed from a year ago when the u.s. walked out of the deal and put the sanctions back on. >> the united states pulled out of the agreement, which limited

12:08 pm
inclination for further military conflict. why, really, would iran want that? there is an argument -- this is really about leverage. he is the one who makes that case on the opinion page of today's "wall street journal." fox news parent company they share common ownership. the united states wants a new nuclear agreement. they have the economic power to cripple iran's economy and the diplomatic power to bring other nations along. iran wants really from economic sanctions. so it's demonstrated it can stop oil flow, there by raising prices. and it has threatened more nuclear activity in an effort to get other nations to help it bypass u.s. sanctions. that's the argument. leverage battle. of course, there are risks. let's bring in eric brewer. i deputy director on the center- a bipartisan nonprofit policy
12:09 pm
research group. good to se see you. >> thanks for having me. >> shepard: battle for leverage, if you buy make that argument. it would certainly have risks specifically what? >> i think that argument is about right. iran is certainly undertaking a range of actions, including what is likely to be bypassing this nuclear program in the near future as well as -- >> shepard: he could be doing that, or he makes the argument that they could be trying to get all of these other nations around the world to believe th them. say we could do this if everybody doesn't side with us. in fact, i want to show you while we are on that topic health he sort of wraps all of this up. he says iran appears to be making one final calculation. that the allies are so rocky, personal credibility is so low that the world will believe iran's version of events and
12:10 pm
blame washington, rather than iran for the escalating tensions. what do you think? >> i think they are certainly banking off of some of that. they can see the difficulty that the united states has had with our allies sense withdrawing. they have undertaken action to try and exploit some of that pure look no further than the fact that one of the attacks on the tankers was on a japanese ship. so i think that is certainly part of it. there are multiple audiences for their actions. one is the united states. that is to regain leverage against them. the other is to try and pressure europe and other participants to provide additional economic benefits that iran believes it should get. they have been quite explicit in that in fact when they made these announcements back in may. making their original announcement that it was prepared to start walking back from the commitments, that this was in fact you sort of try to prompt and pressure europe to provide some of these benefits
12:11 pm
that will require us to confront the u.s. sanctions. leverage is the name of the game, and in fact, i think that's important to note because what is not the name of the game is building a bomb. a lot of the moves they undertaking are gradual. they will certainly depend upon the rate at which they are carried out. it will reduce their timeline to a weapon, but i think the purposes for leverage, not actually making a bomb. i don't think that's a real risk at the moment. >> shepard: not dashing towards a nuclear bomb. so in "the wall street journal" today, he says that they really have three options. quoting a scholar on this. try to outlast from, which maybe he would be able to do. again, negotiations on a new agreement with the iranians. clearly, they don't want to do that. or escalating. at the moment, they are escalating, americans are escalating by having these meetings and making these statements. what are the greatest risks of
12:12 pm
this back and forth escalation? >> i think the greatest risk is that it gets out of hand, and there is a miscalculation that brings the two sides a lot closer to war. i think the iranians, and the united states as well, trying to respond still in a way that they think is proportional, but there's a big question about whether or not there is agreement as to what proportional looks like on both sides. there is a real risk that this escalation continues to spiral in a way that neither side really predicts and neither side really wants. i would say on the options available to iran, from their perspective, negotiation for them right now really isn't strategically or politically feasible. the 12 demands that the state department has made and that secretary pompeo has made would essentially require a 180 degrees turn in the key tenets of foreign policy, and really their identity. that is kind of a nonstarter for them. go back to the original point, it is about regaining that
12:13 pm
leverage to put themselves in a better position. >> shepard: leverage. both sides in the middle. hopefully nothing goes weird and wrong that will cause something to blow up and then create a back and forth. eric brewer, it is great to see you. thank you. i appreciate it. >> thank you. >> shepard: knew tension in egypt that we'll get to you in just a moment. iran and the united states are ratcheting up tensions and beating war drums. o.j. has joined twitter. i'm next, how o.j. simpson plans to use the social media site to as he puts it, straighten out a few things. that's coming up as our reporting continues on this monday afternoon. ♪ one country enefits we as a give our veterans is eligibility for a va loan for up to 100% of your home's value. thank you, admiral. so if you need money for your family, call newday usa. need cash?
