1:17 am
that exchange we just heard from julian castro and beto and specifically this 1325 act. julian castro saying we should decriminalize everyone coming across the border illegally and make it a civil violation. what is he talking about? is that possible? >> it is certainly possible, you can always change the law but i think it is a foolish policy. the talks about three things, decriminalize, they want to get a pathway to citizenship for people here illegally. all 3 of those ideas will simply increase the problem at the border. talking about detention, the reason -- bring a child, you won't be detained, 90% of the issues issued by immigration court is not showing up at court so their answer is they won't be detained, their answer is let's detain even less when they know that is why they are coming to begin with, decriminalizing illegal entry into the united

states has been in the law for decades. we talk about 0-tolerance, when you prosecute parents were entering illegally it worked. what they don't talk about is border crossings, 26%. having a consequence worked but these people on stage last night, none of them think there needs to be deterrence a consequence are illegal activity. shannon: is even possible? we are already overwhelmed at the border and democrats not willing to go send additional funding to help the effort so that is what i kept thinking all night long when talking about this is donald trump's fault, republicans fault but it doesn't seem democrats are participating in doing anything to help either. >> i think it is possible to change the law but congress can't agree on anything. none of these people on stage

studied the issue to understand why they are coming into blame the president for this issue, trying to take action to secure the border, he's taken a number of the big effort actions, unprecedented assets to the border to solve this problem. declared a national emergency, then threatened tariffs the no other president has gotten. what have they done to address this issue? and as a member of congress failed the american people for decades on this issue so they think they can succeed better than the president? i don't see it. >> something i had not heard prior to last night, julian castro was talking about it, that horrible picture of the father and daughter trying to make it across the river to get to america, they both died. obviously everyone when you look at that picture it pools at your heartstrings.
1:20 am
he said last night that father and daughter had gone to an official checkpoint and tried to get in and seek asylum but were not able to, they were turned away. do you know anything at that and could that be confirmed? >> i don't know anything about that but if you look at what happened in the last few months donald trump tried to push a policy between ports of entry legally that you couldn't claim asylum and the groups sued the president and the ninth circuit said you can enter illegally to claim asylum so what donald trump tried to do is put them in a port of entry away from smugglers and those who wants to do harm in the ninth circuit ruling put them back -- i have said for months, at least -- i have been on fox almost a year and i have said more are going to die, more women will be raped, there will be more caravans because the democratic leadership will not close the

ability -- >> private insurance is not working for tens of millions of americans. >> medicare for all -- >> who has the best plan? republican strategist ned ryan and democrat strategist jason nichols, thank you for joining us early this morning. i know it was a late night. let's talk about that. in terms of doing away with private insurance only two the candidates raised their hands, senator warren and bill diblasio. did that surprise you? >> yes, a little bit. i don't think elizabeth warren could raise her hand fast enough to abolish private insurance companies which would take away private insurance for at least 100 million americans were content with what they have right now. in a sea of medicine the only sane one kind of seem to be john delaney in which he said medicare for all is a complete disaster. most people don't understand how broken medicare and medicaid actually are. last year alone for medicaid and
1:36 am
medicare there were 90 billion $90 billion in improper payments in 2018. these are broken systems and you are saying you want to put everybody into medicare. the fact is we don't need government run healthcare, donald trump was exactly right in regards to healthcare, it is about price and transparency, bringing in competition to drive down the price and create a patient centered healthcare, not provider centric industry. shannon: jason, you bring this up to people at home, the cost of medicare for all. $32.6 trillion is the cost of medicare for all in the first ten years. what did you hear in terms of this topic? what did you think last night? >> i think beto o'rourke was not on the level last night when he was saying private insurance can compete with medicare for all. that is not true. i would agree with republicans when they say that.
1:37 am
you have to have if you have a public option you cannot have private insurance compete, but what you can do is have private insurance as a supplement. if there were medicare for all the three of us would have private insurance so we could get cosmetic dental surgery, things that are not necessarily emergency surgery. it is important that as for the cost, what we pay right now is actually higher. the amount our taxes go up, medicare for all, a hybridized system is not higher than what americans are paying right now. shannon: they did need to get into a little more detail in terms of the topic but they only had so much time. let's get to this before we ran out of time. the biggest geopolitical threat to america. is what they had to say. >> china.

1:39 am
shannon: final word, what did you think of what they had to say? >> china certainly is a threat economically but i would say it is iran and the way it has been handled the president is showing some restraint but when we look at it john bolton and other war hawks advising him are playing a game of chicken that could be very costly. you heard tulsi gabbard make the comment, you have to be careful with iran. shannon: who won last night? >> i would say castro. shannon: what do you think? >> i don't disagree. elizabeth warren, i expected her to do well as well. >> some say she was given too much time, thanks for joining us, appreciate it, we will do it all over again tonight. donald trump's economy a prime target for democrats. >> this economy is not working

1:45 am
immigration is not a top issue for democrats. shannon: let's talk about the economy. democrats on the economy and listen to this. >> the economy has got to work for everyone and we know this economy is not working for average americans. >> you have a government, an economy that does great for those with money and isn't doing great for everyone else, it is corruption, pure and simple. shannon: i wondered how they would tackle this, the economy is doing well right now. >> this is a fascinating issue because even democrats, 60% say the economy is doing well, the

hispanic vote is going to carry a lot of weight because there has to be something that differentiates them. is that a risky strategy? absolutely. who came across as most authentic with it? beto had some issues with that. a lot of people making fun of him but the bottom line is the hispanic vote is important to the democrat candidate who will win in 2020 so starting now starting in miami, who did it most authentically? beto fell to the side. shannon: i'm glad you used the word authenticity. that something i was trying to think of last night. i go back where we began in terms of immigration and julian castro bringing up the picture of the father and daughter who died trying to get here and talking immigration. what did you think of that? >> when you bring the personal side to it that is where you win. not going after the direct attack, how inhumane republicans are is not the way to go.
