have a great night, everybody. ♪ ♪ >> tucker: good evening and welcome to "tucker carlson tonight." we are coming to you live, river side, from kyoto, japan. we nearly did not make it back to our live camera location yesterday. we had quite a journey. we'll show it to you throughout the hour. shortly, of course, we'll be interviewing the president in japan here for the g20. back in the native land, the united states of america, the democratic party went completely insane yesterday. that's been happening for a while, of course. insanity is a process. but last night, at the first democratic primary debate of the 2020 season, they made it official. elite democrats have permanently broken with reality. they no longer care about what is true, what is possible. even what's real.

they live in a kind of dream state, a place a fantasy, punctuated by howls of self-righteousness. watch as julian castro, keep in mind, he was an actual cabinet secretary in the obama administration, only a couple of years ago, watch as julian castro explains that meg who get pregnant have a moral right to taxpayer-funded abortions. not joking. watch. >> i don't believe only in reproductive freedom. i believe in reproductive justice. [cheers and applause] and what that means is that just because a woman or, let's also not forget someone in the trans community, a trans female -- [cheers and applause] it does not mean they should not have the right to exercise the right to choose. >> tucker: and so they cheered. behold, late empire liberalism in full flower. who exactly is the constituency for castro's idea?ch men dressed as women who get pregnant. that is the constituency. unfortunately, there are

precisely zero people on planet earth who fit that description. not a single person, actually. there never have been any people like that. there never will be any people like that.ct why? because it's impossible. biological men cannot get pregnant. pretending otherwise is lunacy. it's the very definitionnt of lunacy. but julian castro doesn't cares taxpayer-funded transgender abortion sounds like something that all good progressives should support. so castro fervently does. and critically, he knows that nobody in the room will defend him, what the hell are you talking about? they can't say a word. they are too intimidated. they know hr is watching. so they nod like monkeys as if everything he is saying is scompletely sane. "oh, good point, mr. secretary. trans females shouldn't have to pay for their own abortions. that's racist." the whole thing was a cartoon, or a novel. it went on like this all night. here, for example, is julian castro agreeing with elizabeth warren that it shouldn't be illegal for foreigners to break our laws.

[report of questioning] >> president trump: thank you very much everybody, it's a great honor to meet with president putin, his representative, my representative, we have many things to discuss, including trade and including some disarmament for some little protectionism, perhaps. we are going to assess a lot of different things. we have had a very, very good relationship, and we look forward to spending some good time together. a lot a very positive things going to come out of the relationship, so vladimir, thank you very much. >> we have something to discuss here. all the talk has happened outside. we haven't seen each other since the helsinki meeting. although we have been together working, they've given us a great opportunity to build on that. thank you very much. thank you for your time.

[multiple people talking] >> all right, you are watching live pictures from osaka, japan, where president trump is a meeting with putin of russia. looks like that is all they are going to say. reporters there try to ask some questions. we actually have a reporter on the ground there right now. joining us now live from osaka with more on this soon to happen meeting, fox news correspondent rich edson. a rich, thanks so much for being here. listen, this is their first

meeting since the mueller report confirmed no collusion. so what is the agenda for today? what is the president's goal for this meeting? speak of the senior administration officials say there is no specific or set agenda, but did preview a host of items the two presidents can talk about. the u.s. and russia have been engaging on a number of these fronts over the last couple of years, whether it be the ongoing civil war in syria, security in the middle east, improving the relationship, something you heard both presidents just say, they want to work on a better relationship between the two countries, even though since president trump has taken office, there has been a deterioration even further of the relationship between russia and the united states, with more sanctions against russia for a host of items, russia supporting the assad regime in syria appeared also the poisoning of a british spy, a former russian sn england. this relationship has had real

strains, even though president trump had tried to go into these discussions, even earlier into his administration to try to improve the relationship with russia, it really hasn't gotten there yet. you also heard both of the presidents talk about a desire to discuss arms treaties. the u.s. has recently withdrawn from an arms treaty that it had with russia signed back in 1987. the reason, according to the united states, is russia was in violation of the intermediate range missile treaty. there is also a treaty signed under the obama administration called new start. that is scheduled to expire in 2021. russian president vladimir putin says he wants to work on extending bad, but some of the administration have given signals they might be willing to allow that treaty to expire in the next couple of years. the view from many within the trump administration as they want to get china on board, as well. they don't really see the benefit in limiting the united states when it comes to russia, when you have china building up its military force.

so there are several issues that the u.s. and russia have been in discussions about over the last couple of years, and senior administration officials expect those all to continue. back to you. >> a lot on the table. let's talk about around really quickly. i can only imagine one of the leaders are going to bring this up, and putin is originally set a war between the u.s. and iran would be a catastrophe, but sanctions are not justified, so what might this conversation look like? >> the russian position and this is they want the united states to calm down the rhetoric, calm down the sanctions that they have reimplemented on the iranian regime. russia is part of the iran nuclear deal, was one of the signatories back in 2015. it, like the other countries part of the iran nuclear deal, they are still in the deal care they oppose the trump administration's withdrawal a couple of years ago from it. they didn't agree with the trump administration re-imposing those of sanctions against the iranian regime after that, so they want to see the united states back to the fold, back to the table. to the russians have been very

critical of u.s. actions over the last couple of months, even, in boosting the military presence in the persian gulf, some of the other sanctions the trump administration has put on the iranian regime. they, like others, want to see the u.s. kind of dialect back, but the trop administration is firmly outside of the iran nuclear deal. they are trying to get some of the other allies around the world, whether it is those in the gulf, or even those in europe, to try to support that u.s. position of tracking cracn on the maximum pressure against the iranian regime for the president did speak about iran earlier today at the summit, he said that he is willing to wait as long as it takes. at the sanctions will remain on. he has plenty of patience when it comes, says he needs of the iranian regime to renegotiate beer the iranians on the other hand refused to be frightened to the negotiating table and have thus far rejected any of the overtures to restart talks of the united states. >> finally, this is the first

conversation they're having having in person since the mueller probe, obviously turning out to be no collusion with russia. u.s. intelligence maintains a russia did metal with the 2016 election, putin of course has denied that. could the president once again bring this up, or is this just behind him? >> senior administration officials say the president will very likely bring this up again, previous administration officials have brought this up with the russian government, they brought up strong protests, according to these officials. the president publicly hasn't been one to indicate he is going to do that in this meeting with the russian president. the president has says several times, multiple times, that he s to russian interference, when it comes to the mueller report and this entire business from the 2016 election, that he believes that the united states needs to move beyond fat, and it is simply politics and democrats are charging it out. the democrats, course, believe the opposite, they believe they control the house and the

investigatory committees within the house of representatives. they are trying to get the unredacted version of the mueller report. and in that report, there was found to be russian, systematic interference in the u.s. presidential election in 2016, and then secretary of state rex tillerson set about a year and a half ago that russia was always trying to metal in the u.s. midterm elections from last year, so according to officials, it seems the president would bring this up, though publicly it seems the president wants this behind him. >> you know, they were supposed to actually meet after the helsinki meeting. if that happen because the president said he wasn't going to meet president putin until the ukraine situation was resolved. the ukraine soldiers that have been jailed. do you think perhaps that will come up? is that going to be a point of tension for the two? >> it's one of the many sticking points in the u.s.-russia relationship. this flared up a couple of months ago when the two leaders

were supposed to meet on the sidelines of another international summit, and the united states rejected that full height and assigned meeting because of what had transpired, where the russian government had seized about two dozen ukrainian sailors. those sailors are still in prison by the russian government, that has not been resolved, nor has a russia, with the united states and the u.n. say and the international committee said is russia's obligation occupation of ukraine, crimea, what's been going on since 2014. these russian incursion, russian-backed incursion, the separatist movement that is going on in ukraine right now. ukraine has -- and has been for quite some time -- fighting within itself, whether to go closer to the west or closer back to russia. so that is a real sticking point between the u.s. and russia relationship, in the u.s.-russian relationship, it is something that has drawn a severe response from the united states when it comes to

sanctions against the russian government, because of its 2014 incursions within ukraine, its seizure of crimea. that is expected to continue. also, if you look on your screen here, the number of top officials from both countries, the secretary of treasury steve mnuchin from also secretary of state mike pompeo across from him, that is russian foreign minister vladimir putin. they have met several times, and according to officials of the state of pharma, discussed all the issues we have gone through this evening. >> this relationship is so interesting to me, president putin and president trump, president trump staying just a few moments ago, he is hoping positive things are going to come out of this relationship. of course, he wants a good personal relationship with president putin, but there is so much and distrust in washington. how does he go about doing that? how does he sell that to washington? >> is a difficult thing. if you think about it, the one sort of issue that has really united democrats and republicans, at least in the

united states senate, and even in the house, has been a strong response to russia. a reaction to russian interference in the 2016 election, the poisoning of the former russian spy in the united kingdom. the congress passed a very robust sanctions law but the united states has followed through on in sanctioning a number of russian officials and certain entities within russia in response to all but the u.s. has been calling russia out for the u.s. government has called the russian government out for. >> thank you very much. you been watching live from japan. and nobody says, hey, julian, men can't get pregnant. because you are not allowed to say that men can't get pregnant as a democrat in 2019.gn it is not a problem, do you think? >> when you have them on your show, you can ask him what he had in mind. i honestly don't profess to know. >> tucker: it's not him, it's not him. he's not -- whatever. he doesn't know what he saying. he got his talking points confused. i'm talking about everyone else in the room. everybody else in the room, the candidates, moderators wait a second, men can't get pregnant. as you well know, you are not allowed say that.noiscoab icand so what you make of a party that prevents you from saying that men can't get pregnant? >> i understand why you want to emphasize something seemingly batty like that. >> tucker: [laughs] i'm serious. >> the emphasis in 2018 about caravans. what the public saw was these little kids in these cells and still -- my point is, i think people want to focus on what matters and what doesn't. you have to ask yourself, why are all these democrats running ahead of donald trump in these polls in states that trump won?

so, the economy is doing pretty well.l. he hasn't delivered on his three central promises, no wall that mexico paid for, not repealed obamacare, and is not trade deals. it's not -- you can talk as much as you want about these crazy transgender abortions, but that is not what is going to get the swing voters, the suburban women, who were withon trump in '16 and who abandoned him in droves in '18, coming back. >> tucker: okay. you are talking about head-to-heads, which, you know, as a longtime veteran of campaigns, don't mean anything. they do suggest there are weaknesses of the trump campaign. no one would deny that. i'm not denying that. i don't work for them. i'll be honest about it. but it doesn't mean that any of these individual candidates can beat trump. in the end, it will be one against one. if you are the candidate who can't say that men are different from women, or that foreigners shouldn't be allowed to break american law, then how

can you beat trump if you can't tell obvious truths? >> well, again, i think most democratic voters actually are moderate, according to the exit polls, from 2018. more moderate than they are self-described liberals. i think we'll see tonight some evidence of that. >> tucker: that's the point i'm making, actually. >> and i'm saying i expect michael bennet, for example, to take on bernie sanders and say, bernie, this party is not socialist.on we don't agree with medicare for all. we don't agree with free this and free that. i think there is going to be a certain resonance to that. we'll see. i just think last night was a bit -- >> tucker: i hope you are right. i hope you are right.bewe by the way, we are seeing the president of the united states is in osaka, japan, about 25 miles from where we are right now meeting with -- right in the center of the shot, the japanese leader, abe. of course, we'll be down there tomorrow. >> is that modi from india?

we have to bring our troops home from afghanistan. we are in a place in afghanistan where we have lost so many lives. we've spent so much p money, money that is coming out of every one of our pockets, money that should be going into communities here at home, meeting the needs of the people here at home. we are no better off in afghanistan today than we were when this war began. >> tucker: all obvious points. none of which you are allowed to say out loud in washington. now, they make congresswoman tulsi gabbard seem like basically an untouchable. she is not allowed to get the kind of coverage that the rest of the democratic candidates get. but the viewers loved it. at the debate, gabbard's was the most searched name online. tulsi gabbard of hawaii joins us tonight. aloha, congresswoman gabbard. >> aloha, tucker. >> tucker: i'm sure you don't want to play the victim but despite the fact that you won a

number of online polls, you had the most google searches, your name, you got some of the fewest minutes to speak of any of the ten candidates on stage. and you were the only one who was essentially attacked personally by the moderators. why do you think that was? >> look, it shows that there is a clear bias in place. i made the most of every minute that i had, wish i had the opportunity to have more time to address these important issues.. w but i want to just point out something from that clip that you played that i think is really important, where we hear a lot of politicians say there same argument that, well, we've got to stay engaged in thehe world, otherwise we'll be isolationist, as though the only way the united states cant engage with other countries is by blowing them up or strangling them with economic sanctions, by smashing them and trying to overthrow their governments. this is exactly what is wrong with this whole premise and the

whole view with which too many politicians, too many leaders in this country, are viewing the united states' role in the world. how about the united states be a leader in the world, work out differences, and build relationships with negotiations and diplomacy and finding common interests and seeing hoa we can work together, so we can stop sending our men and women in uniform into harm's way, serving in missions that do not serve the interest of the american people, that make our country less safe and actually end up causing more harm and more damage to the people in the countries where we wage these wasteful regime change wars. that is a kind of change leadership i am hoping to bring as president. >> tucker: you just mentioned sanctions. you are not questioning the ironclad, bipartisan consensus in washington that sanctions against iran areon morally righteous and can never be withdrawn, are you?? >> i am, absolutely. i think this is one of the

things that is leading us closer and closer to a war with iran, a war that will be far more devastating than anything that we saw in the war in iraq. i served in iraq in 2005 for the medical unit. this was the height of the iraq war. there were lots of american casualties, almost every day and i was confronted with that high, terrible human cost of war, a war with iran would make that war with iraq look like a picnic. escalating these crippling sanctions, withdrawing from the iran nuclear deal, designating iran's military as a terrorist organization, something unprecedented, and continuing to deploy more and more u.s. troops. the neocons in the trump administration and saudi arabia and netanyahu have created the situation where it is going to be very difficult for president trump to avoid a war with iran. they have built all the

building blocks, placed the dynamite, and lit the fuse. it is going to be up for donald trump and his leadership, whether or not he is going to cut that fuse and say, hey, we need to get back on track and put the interest of the american people in our country first. and avoid a war with iran. get back into that iran nuclear agreement. >> tucker: this is why the neocons hate you more than anybody. [laughs] more than anybody. they are writing pieces about you right now. congresswoman tulsi gabbard -- >> as you pointed out, really quick, this is an issue that conservatives, republicans, democrats, progressives, this is an issue that transcends party lines. i think that is where the leadership i bring brings the opportunity to unify the country to make this kind of change that is important to every single american in this country.y. >> tucker: that's exactly right. there's nothing partisan in the slightest about this at all. that is why it is such -- so nice to hear someone say that out loud. congresswoman, thank you very much.. >> thanks, tucker.

>> tucker: at least one candidate in the democratic race, eric swalwell of california, has already explicitly endorsed gun confiscation, coming to your house, taking your guns away. you already know what that guunns, in a year or so, everyone on the other side will be supporting it. if you support it, you'll be a racist. chuck todd gave elizabeth warren and cory booker, both sitting u.s. senators, a chance to say they were against confiscating guns. instead, both of them evaded the question. victor davis hanson was watching last night, a senior fellow at the hoover institution. he joins us tonight. professor, thanks for coming on. i don't think anybody believes that gun confiscation, which clearly a lot of these people are for, would make the country safer. so it has not made other countries safer. what is the point of that? i wonder, why wouldth they support it? >> yeah, it is kind of strange when a professor of law can't say we don't have a right to go into a person's home and confiscate illegal weapons. but she couldn't answer, no, absolutely, to that.

i think what is going on on aside, tucker, from the fact that no democratic candidate with few exceptions want anyone to be the left of them. they are all moving left. on gun situation, i think we always in this country fixate in the misdemeanor we think we can control because we have no idea how to deal with the existential felonies. if we have 11 or 12,000 deaths by homicide, with the use of firearms, the vast majority are handguns. they are usually stolen or they are sold illegally, and most of it, to be quite frank,le are ay inner city youth, the majority of them african-american. we don't have any idea how to approach. then we say, ar-15, or we will get automatic, semiautomatic -p there is no automatic legal weapon, there are not many ofeg them even illegal. we'll go after semiautomatic so-called assault weapons. but, over the last 20 years, tucker, only 300 people have died from them, in a country of 330 million.

so it's almost like saying, let's go into people's homes and confiscate iphones because 5,000 people every year die while people text on a mobile phone. we would not consider that. but we are going to shut down the country and destroy the second amendment to go apparently after -- to stop 300 people being killed by a rifle. it doesn't make any sense. it is part of this inability to deal with the reality, so we have to pursue the plan to geti a sense we are doing something. that and the fact in this primary, no one is going to be to the right of anybody.y. they are always going to be the left of the rival candidate. >> tucker: it almost seems like they are trying to punish and control large portions of the population. >> yeah, they are. >> tucker: at some point they will stop pretending and just say that out loud, aren't they? >> yeah, i think what gave rise to donald trump was that a lot of people said, i just want to be left alone.nk i follow the constitution, i'm law-abiding, and it's not my problem that you can't address these problems of people who

are breaking the law and a killing people, and you know why are they are doing it, you know where they are doing it, but in the absence of a solution, you turn to me because it is good publicity. when elizabeth warren said, we need more data, we need more research, we have too much research. we know exactly the problem but we don't have the wherewithal and wisdom -- >> tucker: [laughs] but we lie about it. >> we lie about the data, we live in -- >> tucker: i dare you to read the data, good luck.k. professor, great to see you tonight. >> thank you. >> tucker: we've been in japan for the better part of the week. we've taken planes and trains and automobiles on the way to interviewing the president. but we did not stop there. the journey continued throughout the hour. watch. >> tucker: this is the third part of the saga. we began on a train, transferred to a bus, and now we find ourselves on a boat on
