5:00 pm
tucker carlson coming up from osaka, japan, at the g20. good night, everybody. ♪ >> tucker: well, good evening. welcome to "tucker carlson tonight." this is our last day in kyoto japan. we are heating i heading in an w with the president after the show and we'll bring it to you monday. last night had a primary debate and what passes for the heavy hitters on the left in attendance. joe biden, pete buttigieg, kamala harris and bernie sanders. on immigration, at least, they seemed in total agreement. [chanting] sorry for the tape mixup.
5:01 pm
that was the youth wing making pretty much the same point. watch pete buttigieg. this is the right tape. buttigieg is a mayor and a presidential candidate but a self-described moral leader gandi or jackson brown. watch him say it's morally wrong to maintain international borders. >> the criminalization is the basis for family separation. you do away with that, it's no longer possible. of course, it wouldn't be possible anyway in my presidency because it is dead wrong. >> tucker: got that? sneaking in someone else's country can never be a crime. it doesn't matter if you're a spy, gang member, drug mule with 20 kilos of heroin on your back or a human trafficker with stable of child prostitutes. you are welcome here. we won't judge you. in fact we'll gladly pay for your comprehensive medical care no matter what it takes.
5:02 pm
that's how much we raise ourselves. watch. >> raise your hand if your government plan would provide coverage for undocumented immigrants? [applause] >> tucker: got that, mr. and mrs. american? you may be going broke trying to pay for your own family's healthcare, many of you are, by the way. but now you get to pay for free healthcare for the rest of the whole world. anyone who ignores our laws and sneaks in, you owe them benefits the second they get here. got that, racist? if you don't like it, tough. the democratic party plans to disarm you so you are powerless. congressman stallwall called for this. >> i'm the candidate asking for buy-back program of arms.
5:03 pm
>> tucker: doesn't your constitution guarantee your right to keep and bear arms? the document says that. but once that bernie sanders moves the conservative off the supreme court, the left can do whatever it wants. watch him explain. >> i do not believe in packing the court. we have a terrible 5-4 majority, conservative court right now. i do believe constitutionally we can rotate judges to other courts and that would bring in new blood to the supreme court. >> tucker: bernie sanders talking about new blood. it's all so great. keep in mind that is not court-packing. no, not even close. it's court-rotating. that means getting rid of judges that bernie sanders doesn't like and installing judges who agree with bernie sanders. that is totally different. the other candidates seemed on board with that. or they were too busy attacking joe biden to notice
5:04 pm
what the old guy on. there is a lot to hit biden on. his sex, color of his skin. but stallwell pointed out that joe biden is really, really old. >> i was 6 years old when a presidential candidate came to the california democratic convention and said it's time to pass the torch to a new generation of americans. that candidate was then senator joe biden. biden was right when he said it was time to pass the torch to the new generation of americans. he is still right today. if we solve the issue of automation, pass the torch. if he solve the issue of climate chaos, pass the torch. >> tucker: got that, old man? joe biden is a musty antique who ought to be eating soft food in florida somewhere. you know what else? he is a racist. a bitterly elderly bigot. he's probably watching "birth of the nation" and kamala harris made that clear.
5:05 pm
he started out saying he is not a racist meaning he is definitely a racist. >> i will direct this to vice president biden. i do not believe you are a racist. but you also worked with them to oppose busing. there was a little girl in california who was part of the second class to integrate her public school. she was bused to school every day. that little girl was me. >> tucker: everything about that is fake. it's hard to imagine more disingenuous paragraph. kamala harris implies california schools were segregated in the 1970s. they were not. some of us were there. harris was not a civil rights hero. her father was literally a stanford economics professor and she went to high school in montréal, canada. a child of privilege if there ever was one. as for forced busing, it's amazing that any democrat
5:06 pm
would defend it. busing didn't work. it was an abject failure. black families hated it. it didn't raise anybody's scores in the end. busing didn't work. honest people on the left admit that. brookings admitted that. the only people who liked busing then and now are rich liberals, the ones that are totally insulated from the effects of the fail and the stupid social policy. everyone else in this country, 90% of americans according to gallop thought busing was awful. good call. run on that. more busing! joe biden is a racist. here is our nominee, kamala harris. listen to her explain why she is a good person and you're morally flawed. that will definitely work. just like with hillary clinton last time. lisa booth is the senior fellow of the independent women's voice and she joins us
5:07 pm
tonight. these people are unbelievable. >> do i get hazard pass for the past few nights watching the debate? senator harris says i don't think you are a racist but let me point out why i do think you are a racist. it's an interesting strategy there. it was calculated. she had a tweet she put one a tweet of the little girl, saying that little girl was me. they are selling t-shirts now so this is a thought out calculation by the campaign. i do think vice president biden is vulnerable. there is an air of inevitably with him. he has been ahead in the poll due to the name i.d. and perceived electability like hillary clinton. air of inevitably with her and the democratic establishment. that is dangerous for democrats. because anyone who watched last night's debate cannot objectively say that vice president biden is a strong candidate. he did not have a good night.
5:08 pm
he was not prepared for the attacks. he was not sharp. frankly he even gave up in the middle of trying to respond to senator harri harris harris' at. >> tucker: gave up? >> he was talking and said i think we're out of time. you don't do that. if you are vehemently defending your record you don't just say, you know what? whatever. we're running out of time. i'm tired. whatever. that is what happened. he had a tough time getting his words out. he didn't look sharp. i think the most potent line of attack was from eric swalwell. i hate to give him credit. but his line of attack on the generational one. the biggest challenge for vice president biden we have sang big change election with the previous elections. the americans have been asking for change. vice president biden by the product of him being part of the previous administration he has will have to look back and explain his record, continue to look back. it will be difficult for him to look forward. that is his vulnerability for
5:09 pm
vice president biden on the debate stage; particularly, with some of the younger candidates who are making the case for the future. that is a vulnerability for vice president biden. i think in addition to just being a terrible candidate, personally. >> tucker: yeah. you get, you know, you run out of energy. at 50, i feel too old to run for president. >> i'm 34 and i couldn't run for president. i'm also not running to be commander-in-chief so there is a higher standard. >> tucker: great to see you. thank you. >> thank you, tucker. >> tucker: dana perino joins us and we love to have her on and she joins us again for the second time in a row. this is where i talk about how smart i am. no, that's not true. but i did call biden. it was obvious to me that the democratic party could never
5:10 pm
nominate elderly white man as the nominee. how could you do that? do you think biden is over after last night? >> i think that he has lost a little momentum. let me step back and tell you it's too early to say that. because there are nine debates and 31 weeks to go before the first votes are cast in iowa. we have a long way to go. the other thing i thought was interesting reading about polling, a live poll that was taken in iowa with undecided democrats. and they had a group of african-americans. a group of non-educated, college educated, married, all the different groups. those people are not on twitter. they are just watching and telling you they are dialing it up or dialing it down and whether they like or don't like it. what is interesting to me when kamala harris tore in to joe biden, the numbers for kamala harris went way up. but then when biden responded his numbers went way up too, with african-americans. it's too early to say, i
5:11 pm
think, what will ultimately happen to him. i do think that somebody like michelle goldberg at the "new york times," she very much wants a democrat to win. believe me, she does. but she always felt that biden won't be there for them at the end. he won't be able to have the new energy. i remember president bush talking about elections. and that especially the democrats, they like to look forward. they like new. and what biden did today when he tried to clean up his debate he went right back to looking at obama. and biden. and hanging on to that. not looking forward. so that probably will hurt him in the long run. >> tucker: but i would say -- i agree with everything you said. but kamala harris also looked back almost 50 years at schooled busing, forced busing which is remarkable to me considering there has never been any support among black families, nor among white families for forced busing. it didn't serve anybody. nobody liked it. have you ever seen a poll that
5:12 pm
showed majority support for forced busing among african-americans? we'll take your kid and bring them across town to go to kid with the white kids and you should feel grateful for that. there is no poll that
5:13 pm
talked about it at all, a person who lost the debate is bernie sanders. no one is talking about him today. >> tucker: no one. >> that is something to watch. >> tucker:er ever again. that is a good -- that is a
5:14 pm
good point. you are full of good points. it's great to see you. >> bye. >> tucker: a big theme at the debate. every democrat lined up to denounce children in cages and promise they would get rid of the children in cages to eliminate the border security entirely. watch this. >> i will release children from cages. put them in cages. >> putting children in cages. >> justice department saying that children in cages do not need a bed. >> cage a child -- >> so just, just so you understand it, they are telling you that the president is sending out his agents in to foreign countries to abduct, to kidnap children. put them in capables cages. why is he doing that? of course he is not doing that. that'ses.that's nuts. why do we have a crisis at the
5:15 pm
boarder? washington created it by refusing to secure the border or support anyone coming here illegally. that is why. don't take our word for it. obama security at d.h.s. jeh johnson said it out loud last year. watch. >> these pictures show pictures of unaccompanied minors in effect jail situations. as you look back on that, did you handle it so well? >> i freely admit it was controversial. we believed it was necessary at the time. i still believe it is necessary to have capabilities for families. >> tucker: so for those of you keeping score in at home, in 2014 it was necessary to put children in capables. but in 2019 it's naziism. speakinthat simple. alexandria ocasio-cortez who is a simpleton was asked why
5:16 pm
she didn't call obama for running concentration camps three years ago? her answer was i don't know. i was too busy waiting tables. >> did you call them concentration camps at time when obama was president? >> at the time i was working in a restaurant. >> well, that raises an important philosophical question. if president obama sets up a concentration camp in the forest and alexandria ocasio-cortez is too busy waiting tables to hear about it, does the concentration camp exist? the answer is, no, it didn't. nothing is bad until one of her political opponents does it. that is the rule. well, president trump is in japan for the g20 summit. after an interview with him, he will travel to south korea. now he says he is willing do go to the d.m.z, demilitarized zone for prime tu summit with kim jong un. he tweeted this --
5:17 pm
after some very important meetings including my meeting with president xi for china i'll leave to meet with president kim jong un. if he agrees to think i would meet him at the border atdmz to shake his hand and say hello. the "new york times" says he thought up a meeting this morning. and the last meeting was a failure but this meeting could restart the administration's effort to reach a nuclear deal with the dictatorship on the korean peninsula. we're here in japan and we will follow developments across the water in realtime. kamala harris was the most successful at pandering to identity politics last night. it was nauseating but maybe it was effective. predictably, the president loved it. we will tell you how much they loved it after the break. but first we crammed a lot in the final day in japan. cool country. widespread religion is
5:18 pm
buddhism so we visited one of the famous temples. we are in downtown kyoto that appears to be a temple. i don't know exactly what it is but we're pointing it out because it's the signature style of the city. traditional japanese agriculture. one of the few buildings that was not destroyed in the second world war. it's raining. this is monsoon season. there is one brewing now and it should be here in hours. but essentially this time of the year it rains nonstop. but it doesn't seem to have any effect on the people of kyoto who go about their business as if it's not raining so we're doing the same. we're the slowskys.
5:19 pm
5:20 pm
5:21 pm
5:22 pm
we like drip coffee, layovers- -and waiting on hold. what we don't like is relying on fancy technology for help. snail mail! we were invited to a y2k party... uh, didn't that happen, like, 20 years ago? oh, look, karolyn, we've got a mathematician on our hands! check it out! now you can schedule a callback or reschedule an appointment, even on nights and weekends. today's xfinity service. simple. easy. awesome. i'd rather not.
5:23 pm
>> tucker: welcome back. we're in kyoto still. it's a great place. even before thursday night's debate it was on the media would never let joe biden be declared the winner. not an endorse. oment.he is not evil. but they decided it had to be somebody else. the person they chose, probably in advance, is kamala harris. they don't care about her policies. she doesn't have policies. they care about her background. that makes her in the word of van jones, a star. a star. >> kamala harris had a moment that was two hours long. >> right. >> i mean, a star was born. >> tucker: it doesn't matter how many dumb people you put at a desk. it's not going to be compelling television. i don't know why they keep programming the shows like that. it's not working.
5:24 pm
obviously. jeff zucker, what a genius. after the debate on the other channel chris matthews lobbed a bizarre question to kamala harris. given how evil they, are how has he been able to avoid white people for being white. watch this. this is really important to people of all backgrounds and ethnicities. i don't like the word "race." ethnicities. how did you come out of that and not have hatred to white people generally? >> tucker: good question! joe concho writes about media for "the hill a" and watches a lot of television. imagine his monthly bill. it's great to see you. >> you, as well. >> tucker: i can't believe you have to watch that stuff. what is that like? >> oh, well, every day there is something to write about, tucker. that is for sure. "a star is born." i thought that was lady gaga and barbra streisand. i like gaga better in those situations. but to your point where you are saying before around the media not wanting biden to
5:25 pm
win, you are right. he is everything that was embodied by hillary clinton, which lisa booth pointed out before. kindler and gentler. doesn't do tough interviews. risk averse. white. boring. it doesn't do a lot more ratings and clicks. kamala harris could be an historic figure. the feel barac -- the female bak obama. the first female president. so he is will give you big sound bites like trump will. i thought it was going to be buttigieg but he is almost too cerebral for the current media climate. kamala harris clearly is the choice here because obviously she would be the most compelling matchup from inf info-tainment perspective. policy, what is that? info-tainment, and kamala harris fits the bill. >> tucker: but i mean pete buttigieg raises a kind of interesting question. he is a deeply good person. he made that point a lot. he is incredibly religious person. everybody who doesn't agree
5:26 pm
with pete buttigieg is despised by god. he made that point, too. is someone as holy as pete buttigieg, like buddha, is it appropriate for to us look him directly in the face, much less vote for him? can he be in something as temporal as politics when he is such a good person? >> i'm not sure we will be faced with that choice, especially in a general election. i don't think he had a good debate last night. if the bumper sticker is i can do for america what i have done for south bend he will have trouble winning. he has had a tough couple of weeks. he has to defend his policy. can i ask you a question? when did joe biden become racist? in 2008 i'm pretty sure that he was the vice presidential candidate with the first african-american president. at least he was going in that direction, right? there is no scrutiny whatsoever in 2008 around this
5:27 pm
horrible record he apparently has. go ahead. >> tucker: i was thinking of this when i woke up this morning because i covered that race. i will never forget watching barack obama who was an accomplished race baiter attack bill and hillary as racist in the south carolina primary. joe biden was the beneficial of the attacks and now, of course, he is the object of the attacks. a victim of the attacks. there is a cosmic justice here. wouldn't you say? >> that's true. >> tucker: there is a cosmic justice. >> no, that is fine. enjoy monsoon season. >> tucker: my favorite question. >> i couldn't hear you. it went out of me for a second. but in jersey it was all of our spring. we're used to it. now i'm laughing at you. >> tucker: amen. jeff, good to see you. thank you. >> good to see you.
5:28 pm
thank you. >> tucker: a lot of bizarre things going on in the democratic party right now. individual democrats racing leftward in an effort to win the nomination. a year from now, will the last person standing have any hope of beating the incumbent president? that is a question we'll debate after the break. coming to you live from the hotel in kyoto along the beautiful river. but first, japan is justly famous for the technology. you should see the toilets here. amazing. a microchip in every one. there is one part of life that the japanese refuse to move beyond the medieval period. okay. japan is famously advanced country. it's a marvel, actually, of technology for the most part. but they have steadfastly resisted the fork. and instead, use chopsticks. so we are in a chopstick store right now. this is takashi, a chopstick expert. show us your highest end, your

5:32 pm
5:33 pm
>> tucker: welcome back to kyoto. as soon as we get off the air we'll go to osaka to interview the president at the g20 summit. that is airing monday. every democratic cammed date competing to see who can reject america thoroughly. one of the easiest ways is refusing to speak america's language. beto o'rourke and cory booker delivered debate answers in broken spanish on thursday. so the least competent mayor decided the campaign would get a boost by doing the same. bill de blasio. not his real name, by the way. visited striking airport workers in miami and delivered
5:34 pm
what he thought werousing words in -- were rousing words in spanish. here is what he said. [speaking spanish] viva la revolution! but those words were the motto of che guavara. like other rich liberals, de blasio loves che. he had the t-shirt. he never had to face the consequences of what che did. in florida, hundreds of thousands of floridians are refugees from che's cuba. where he helped castro and opposed the communist dictatorship. che himself executed more than a hundred people shooting them in the face with pistols running the prison. according to one account he personally shot a 14-year-old boy. this is de blasio's hero. a few floridians had family members murdered by che. so de blasio had to issue a hasty apology. do you think he learned anything?
5:35 pm
has he ever learned anything ever? of course not. viva la revolution! good work, bill. barely a decade ago then senator barack obama was talking about the importance of securing the border to protect the america's workers. now his party has given up on him. thursday night they ripped each other in a battle be as left wing as possible. one of the party supporters was disheartened by that. >> last night was a disaster for the democratic party. my only hope is people were not watching. >> so eventually no matter how wacky they get one of the democrats will win the nomination. but after that happens, will that person be able to beat the incumbent president? which is the whole point if you're a democrat. we are joined by the former spokesman. louis, good to see you. >> good to see you, tucker. >> tucker: whatever you think of the democratic party, most americans think we need a vibrant two-party system. so you don't want to see, even if the party you disagree with, go complete crazy. how big is the constituency in america for open the
5:36 pm
bordering, decriminalizing illegal entry and offering healthcare for everyone who arrives. how many people support that, would you say? >> this is the problem with the debate format. the raise your hand if you do this or that doesn't allow for nuance or discussion about what you are talking about. this is a gotcha style of politics. so i'll call fake news on that and say we need a sub stative discussion of -- substantive discussion of how it exists. if you have a debate with ten people it doesn't lend yourself to discussion you need to haven't a that. >> tucker: i agree. i a not here to defend nbc news or the hack job they did on the debate. would your healthcare plan would it include undocumented aliens, the people here illegally? every person raised their hand. that is a straightforward question. that is crazy. nobody supports that -- >> it's a change from the past four years. >> tucker: yeah.
5:37 pm
>> steady change over the past four years but it's a recognition, i think it's a recognition -- and pete buttigieg tried to talk about this a little bit. the fact there is a strain on the cost of healthcare already because people who don't have access whether they are undocumented or not are going to the emergency rooms instead of the regular healthcare providers and that creates a major strain on the system. you have to address the cost because you pay for it one way or another. the issue that needs to be dealt with how do you regularize the immigration system so you are not having a large flow of undocumented population. people who are come having an opportunity to legalize? >> tucker: wait, just to be clear. you are arguing that it's cheaper, saying a matter of cost it's cheaper to offer full government backed healthcare which includes a whole massive range of elective options for healthcare. it's cheaper to provide that to noncitizens breaking the immigration law than it is to treat them in emergency rooms.
5:38 pm
is that what you are saying? >> there is a cost of emergency rooms. i'm not running for president, tucker, so i'm not here to defend any of the candidates' specific plan. i'm not defending their plan. >> tucker: this is not a small thing. this is a big thing. >> it is not a small thing. they need to get elected in a different way. there has to be something more than raising your hand with the gotcha question. where joe scarborough talk about it's a disaster for the democratic party he talked about what he perceived of the infighting. he wasn't talking about the one question. he is wrong there, too. by all accounts we are having primaries to select a democratic nominee. they need to find the differences and go at each other and elevate why they think they are a better candidate than the other. they need a healthy debate. >> tucker: amen. >> if they are singing "kumbaya" on stage and only talk about trump that is not what people want to hear either. >> tucker: i totally agree. that is a true and smart point. healthcare stuff will kill you, though.
5:39 pm
louisluis, great to see you. >> you too, tucker. enjoy the trip. >> tucker: thank you. "toy story 4" are a big hit at the theaters but some are mad because it's not taking woke positions on toys. hard to believe that is real. but it is. we have details. we're live from kyoto. wielding chopsticks ahead on the one-on-one interview with the president. today we seized the opportunity to go inside one of the world famous seafood kitchen. this is what we found. >> these are the biggest oysters i have ever seen. we sidled up to this man, an agent oyster expert. he does not speak english. i think this is too big for me. that oyster tool looks hand made. the perfect japanese juxtaposition.
5:40 pm
they use hand made tools to open their oysters. the love of , gravel, and trail dust. for the love of hunting, fishing, and working the land. introducing tracker off-road vehicles-- designed and built on american soil to kick up american soil. like the tracker 570 atv for the nationally advertised price of only $5799 plus freight. tracker off road. built for love of country.

5:42 pm
5:43 pm
5:44 pm
>> tucker: welcome back to kyoto, japan. house intel committee chairman adam schiff seems to be the last famous democrat not running for president. even he is smarter than that. but he is still finding ways to travel and enjoy himself and have you pay for it. last night schiff and four of his democratic colleagues flew to copenhagen, denmark, aboard a taxpayer funded military jet. are they conducting secret negotiations, visiting the troops or doing anything worthy? no. he is going on a week-long vacation in scand knavia and visiting a speech at a pro-democracy conference. presumably representing the anti-democracy side. then it's off to a cocktail
5:45 pm
reception, saturday happy hour and then trips to finland and norway, two of the least diverse countries in the world. it's weird if you are adam schiff and mr. sensitive progressive guy, why aren't you in congo? what are you doing in norway? finland? that is appalling. why are you making us pay for it? why don't you answer the question, mr. schiff? he never will. "toy story 4" on a happier note came out last weekend. the movie made a ton of money and got good reviews but some are mad about it. why? despite the fact that the movie features a dinosaur, slinky dog and talking mr. potato head it's not diverse enough. that sounds diverse. film critic stella duffy says the film needed more nonwhite toys. also more disabled toys. she blasted the love story for being "heteronormative" whatever that is. jason is professor of african-american studies. he is joining us. i can't keep a straight face.
5:46 pm
tell me what a -- >> [speaking japanese] i had to do that in the spirit of the debate. of course there are nonwhite toys. i understand the woman's sentiments. i think she is trying to make a point about having black and brown kids see themselves reflected in the heroes and in the films they watch. even more importantly or possibly at least equally importantly white kids need to see black kids, or black characters as heroes. that is one of the ways we will move forward as a society. for a lot of white kids that will be the only black character or person that ever steps foot in their house. however, i think that this is misguided. i think that, you know, i'm an economic nationalist. i think if we want to see certain images and film we have to start making our own film. hollywood is made up of followers. they follow trends. they follow what people are doing outside of hollywood. then they coopt it. we have to start going the
5:47 pm
marcus gar i have route or the tyler perry route and make our own films with the images we want to see. >> tucker: toys to restate are not real so they don't have races in the first place. they are inanimate objects of cloth or in this case of pixel. >> buzz lightyear, you don't think he has a race? >> no. he is post-racial fair to say. leaving aside the point why do we still have film critics and maybe she should get a real job, isn't it backwards, don't you succeed creating viable businesses or creating great works of art or creating something? the way to get people to succeed is not necessarily by having them see characters who look like them but by encouraging them to work hard and make good choices and learn a lot. isn't that more productive?
5:48 pm
>> isn't that the point of "toy story"? doesn't it have all the good themes? isn't that why we have our kids watch certain movies and read certain books because it will encourage them to do the good things? if they see themselves reflected in that, they will have a positive self-image. also those people who don't see those images ever day will start to see everyone as a human being. so i actually understand where she is coming from. >> tucker: wait a second. look. i'm in japan right now where surveys of self-esteem show it very low. and this is a country of very high achievement. there is no correlation of self-esteem and achievement. the more impressive you think you are, the less impressive you likely are. >> again, usdy agre i disagree h that. a person to hold up is trump. he thinks he is handsome, he thinks he is smart. he has been relatively successful. >> tucker: he became president. >> depending on your measure. i think that a positive
5:49 pm
self-image, you know, if you are hopeless -- >> tucker: you kind of got me on that one. >> if you are nihilistic you are not going to succeed. >> tucker: because it's friday i will concede defeat on that one point about the president of the united states. it's great to see you, professor. >> we miss you here in the swamp. >> tucker: i'll be back. oh, it's friday. you know what time it is? it's time for dan bongino's news explosion. our favorite former secret service agent will be here with the top news of the week. and marianne williamson was the star last night. who is she? and what reality does she live in? we'll try to figure it out after the break. we are going to be sad to leave japan but they are a country of superb craftsman. we visited one of the best today. watch. >> hi, i want to get a knife for my brother buckley. i think i'm going to get that
5:50 pm
one. that is really sharp. that would take your fingers right off. can i get this engraved with my brother's initials? that is amazing! thank you.

back then, we checked our zero times a day. times change. eyes haven't. that's why there's ocuvite. screen light... sunlight... longer hours... eyes today are stressed!
5:54 pm
but ocuvite has vital nutrients to help protect them. ocuvite. eye nutrition for today. >> tucker: it's already saturday here in japan but nothing, literally nothing can stop the dan bongino news explosion. he is here to rank the top stories of the week. hey, dan. >> this is hardcore dedication you doing this from japan. that is how much i love you, buddy.
