survey is giving an update on the california earthquake. let's listen in part. >> between magnitude three and four, this is what has been expected and we also have forecast for the probabilities of aftershocks over the next weeks there is a 9 percent chance within the next week tha we would have in earthquake government greater than magnitude six-point for. there is also a 20 percent chance that we're going to have greater than magnitude five. it's very likely with a magnitude six-point for that yo get aftershocks of those magnitudes. currently we have geologist headed out to the field, they should be there later this afternoon to look at their reports of ground cracks, there is possibility of actual until we have the geologist and reports from the field we can't confirm that. there is there's also been

reports of damage. this sort of fires in the ridgecrest area so that certainly is consistent with what we expected as well. there was some questions about the shake alert system, i will confirm that that system that i the early warning system it did perform is designed. they're were no glitches, in th city of la, there is an app to issue warnings. that warning did not go out and the reason why is because the estimated intensity of shaking for los angeles was intensity three, the app does not kick in until the expected intensity is above for. as designed, the app performed as it should.

the intensity is within the la area was not strong enough to cause any damage. >> i just wanted to check you said at 20 percent chance of greater than a magnitude five the next week. >> i apologize if i misspoke. let me just pull that up here just to make sure we have that correct. if you have the numbers, do you want to do that? >> i think it's important to sa were not protecting a particula earthquake and that seems to be one of the rumors that got goin we are rather saying here is a rate of earthquakes with the lower magnitudes being much mor common than the higher magnitudes, but we can estimate the rate of the larger ones fro the smaller ones. the chance of at least another four is close to 100 percent. the chance of at least a five i about 80 percent. the chance of a six is about 20

percent. and they chance it will be abov the magnitude is about 9 percent . all of that is a statement abou the same rate, you just choose which one which magnitude level you want to talk about. >> and even if we see a magnitude above 6.4, that would still be considered in aftershock? >> if it's above we would chang the name and we would call the first one of four shock. but, all of those words, four shock, main chalk, aftershock mean they're part of the same sequence with the main shock being by definition the largest one. i would say we're part of the same sequence. and that idea that being bigger really matters, that is sort of its a person's idea rather than a physical idea. >> and just to also clarify, if all those probability numbers are for one week period startin

from today. >> the most likely time is today . if we get to tomorrow, those numbers are all quite a bit lower. the numbers will be down by mor than half if we get to tomorrow. >> can he discuss what happens after you get an alert. they're has been some concern that just getting the alert doe not safeguard people. could you bring up what the key issues are that people need to bear in mind as they are concerned about getting that alert? are we getting another one? >> 3.6. >> what action should people be prepared to take? >> asking what people should be doing with alerts and where it is alright to do it. let's remind ourselves this is not a physical science question. we often have physical scientis trying to give the answer is unfortunately. when there have been social

science experiments on what people do, it's not a clean answer. giving more alerts considered generates trust in the system. lots of false alarm generates distressed. part of the concern and current early system without complete funding is how many false alarm will we be issuing. that as a factor that goes into the decision. the other problem is there's a lot of use to the alerts beyond damage. nobody in los angeles county wa damaged very nowhere close, we didn't get anywhere close. that does not stop people from being scared from feeling it. one of the questions is what is the psychological benefit of giving a few seconds warning an knowing it's coming. that's a hard thing to measure physically and therefore is a hard one in those practical decisions of how you do it.

it becomes at decision a committee decision balancing al of these different things, what is the best way to go? >> e said there's two possible faults, is that correct? >> they're are two faults activ right now, we don't know for sure what they are, but you ca see it from the distribution of the aftershocks notice it is an l-shaped. fault don't turn corners that means we have two separate faults the fact that it forms that l. >> when you said was a little part. >> we hypothesized a relationship which would be the northwest trending one, but tha is something that we don't have a number. >> until we get reports from th geologist in the field to confirm if it was surface rupture and if we can find that with a particular fault, we're not going to be able to make a

definitive statement. at this point it is just based on speculation that it be that faults. obviously, this is on a fault, having an name is and it appears , what probably happened here, let me point and you talk. >> let's say were talking about the faults there is one that goes northwest and this one goe northeast. the main shock appears to have occurred on the fault and then ruptured to the southwest so along that faults they are. the motion that we expect on that fault is such that it woul release the stress or they can find stress on that fault of th northwest. >> 's so if they move like this then it pulls the material in.

>> that top, that release, that secondary fault, which in essence participated in the earthquake, but also showing a lot of activity with the aftershock. again, and until we get the geologist in the field i can't confirm that but that is the working hypothesis at this point . >> could you characterize how california geologic weekly in number of faults. >> lots of faults, lots of activity. >> and maybe the answers to the question you may be getting at is this is not unexpected in this area. it's not one of the major fault that we have, but certainly there are active faults and having a six-point for in this part of southern california is certainly appropriate or totall typical. >> it goes back to that geologi time frame question.
