destruction and division. a group of minority women in the united states congress go back to where you came from. that is what the president wrote on twitter just yesterday and today he called them haters of america and. the president is sending those statements and when asked if he thought the tweets might be racist, his response, not at all. >> if you are not happy here then you can leave. as far as i'm concerned if you hate our country, if you are not happy you can leave. >> shepard: here the tweets that kick things off yesterday. so interesting to see the progress of congresswoman who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst and anywhere in the world, if they even have a functioning government now loudly and viciously telling people of united states the greatest and most powerful nation on earth our government is to be wrong. why don't they go back and help

counterfactual, and politically stupid. president trump tweets the congressman are racist. if democrats were to unite around the foul language and racist hatred spewed from the mouths and actions of these very unpopular and unrepresentative congresswoman it will be interesting to seal it plays ou out. in another tweet the president demanded from them an apology. democrats have called president trumps tweets racist and divisive, the house speaker nancy pelosi calling for both parties to support a resolution that condemns what she calls his enough open tweet tweets. representative must be 13 tweeted this morning, it's important to note that the president's words telling the four women to go back to their country's hallmark language of rights of premises. he feels comfortable leading the g.o.p. and outright racism and that should concern all americans.

john roberts live from the north lawn. >> good afternoon. the president spoke earlier today in the event on the south lawn at all about products that were made in america, but the questions were all about the controversy surrounding the tweet he put out yesterday regarding the four members of the squad. the president insisting in a question and answer session after citing a made in america order that would mean that to be classified, products would have to be 75% made in america. he accused the congresswoman of hating america and accused some of them of hating israel, hating jews and his critics say he was racist, but white national groups have praised what he has said. i had the opportunity to ask him about both of those things. doesn't concern you that many people saw that tweet as racist and that white nationalist groups are finding common cause?

go back to where you came from, you might hear it on the street but you should never hear that from the president. >> this afternoon the treasury secretary steve mnuchin said he does not believe the president's comments in the tweet were racist. he kept on going back to this idea that the president has clarified his comments and explained himself. this will be debated for some time. >> shepard: john roberts, thank you. they trump administration taking action to block immigrants from central america to apply. it's a new rule and the reversal of decades of u.s. policy. it will make most migrants who go through another country and eligible for asylum protection here. that includes people escaping poverty and violence in guatemala, el salvador who have to travel by land through mexico to reach the border. there are some exceptions. the aclu calling the move

>> shepard: this is san jose, california, has a big fire burning. aircraft have been dumping retardant on the landscape. you can see a firefighter on the right-hand side of the screen trying to put water on a house that really appears to be a loss at this moment. we have seen some buildings torched around the area. firefighters working hard. updates throughout the news hour. a search is underway for a woman who disappeared while she was out camping. here she is. 60-year-old missing since frida friday. she was with her husband at a remote campsite near the nevada border with california. her husband says she was out taking the dog for a quick walk while he parked the jeep and as he did she simply disappeared. nothing. it's listed as a dangerous and rugged area with a steep rocky and rattlesnakes.

the husband says they are both experienced hikers who hike more than 24 miles each week. family members say they think somebody kidnapped her. police are treating it as a search and rescue case while continuing their investigation. we will hear from the missing woman's daughter. first, trace gallagher reporting live. >> off the top we should know to the county's sheriff departments as her husband is not connected to her disappearance at all, we are now in day four of a multiagency search that contains not only the cheryl sheriff of, rescue teams from san diego, dog teams, the california highway patrol is using its aircraft because they have thermal imaging and when the terrain is that steve and rugged, thermal imaging is invaluable. the family has started a gofundme page to see if they can

convince anyone with search and rescue experience to join the effort. no doubt the search will take some time, but experts say that part of the sierras has numerous access points to water. the weather has not been extremely hot or cold. bottom line, with someone who has a lot of hiking experience, that area is survivable. >> shepard: this is a difficult area i'm reading. >> that's mostly because they are so many trees in the area and the shade actually creates these blind spots. there countless gullies, hills and rocks. i grew up in that area. we were taught from an early age that if you go and you always leave a trail and just to give you some context on these urges. back in 2007 we covered this, the famous aviator, the first man to ever fly a solo balloon. he crashed his plane and the

sierras and even with a massive search effort it took more than a year to find the wreckage, but during that year long search recovery teams did find eight other missing airplanes that had crashed over the decade. a lot of areas for things to get ahead in and lost. as for cheryl powell being the victim of foul play, it's a very real possibility but right now there is not much evidence in that direction. >> shepard: trace gallagher, thank you. serra, cheryl powers daughter. she is in bishop california which is near the campground where her mom is missing. this must be so frustrating for all of you. how is the search? >> the search has been going on. i truly feel that in the last day or two it has been significantly better on their side. we did get different people from

l.a. coming up from l.a. county. we now have more dogs out there. we have a helicopter. we are doing everything we can. my brother and i have been searching 6 miles a day on foot. we have been tracking everythin everything. we have given all of our tracks to search and rescue covering areas that they haven't covered. we are doing everything we can. >> shepard: no leads of any kind. what is at the family believes she has been kidnapped. >> i think the main reason is for us, extreme unlikelihood of her just getting lost. given the circumstances of my dad being gone for 5 minutes and then for 45 minutes my dad screamed, whistled and honked and searched within a thousand feet of where he lost saw her at

the campsite. if she wandered off which she wouldn't because she had no food or water she would have heard fact. if, for some reason, she fell and she was unconscious, that area around has been extensively searched, more than any area. they have been dogs. there is not huge rocks in the area. it's the unlikelihood -- how unlikely she would be just lost out there. she wouldn't keep wandering. we did just hear about a couple that were camping and a man came into their tent at night and shot the husband and i want everyone out there to know that while abduction in a criminal thing out there might seem unlikely, this stuff absolutely does happen. we feel that it's just unlikely that -- she would've heard my dad.

possible from the deep south to the ohio valley. a look at some of the damage the storm has brought to louisiana. would you look at this flooded farmland. south of new orleans. the state's governor and other local officials in that parish visiting some of the hardest hit parts of the state and the governor says he is thankful the flooding wasn't worse. the threat of rising waters is not over. >> we are gratified that we did not get the full amount of rain across louisiana in the flooding we had been told to expect. we are thankful for the fact that the river stayed within the levees. we know the mississippi river will stay a flood state, but we know we are in hurricane season so that prevent some concerns going forward. >> shepard: the mayor of new orleans said the city is beyond lucky as he put it that i didn't see as much rain as the government agencies predicted, but forecasters warn some parts of louisiana could see rainfall

totals of more than 50 feet. rick leventhal reporting. >> cloudy today, but no rain so far after three days of pretty heavy rain. no more near the accumulation they had warned about and of course the river was the biggest concern. this is the first time it has ever been a flood state when a hurricane was threatening to hit a city. it was at 16 feet and the levees are designed to hold back 20 feet. are you okay there? there were concerns it could be brief. it didn't happen. all those flood gates that were closed in anticipation of the storm have been reopened in and around the city, but some surrounded areas to get swamped. some love eyes were overtopped , the coast guard rescued a dozen people in a couple of pets via helicopter on saturday and there were of course some damages to home, business and

economic losses. the governor says he knows it could've been worse and says he is confident that he storm protection system will keep the city safe. >> this was the first time that the system was fully operational in the new orleans area. all the gates were closed. they performed really well. >> one other note of caution, all that rain is north of us now and it will eventually funnel its way back into the river and make its way back here to new orleans. this could see a sign potentially flooding again. >> shepard: looks like part of the big easy or getting back to normal. >> the airport both reopened for business yesterday morning. a lot of those oil rigs that have been evacuated are being reported. to city services are back up to normal for the first time and a wild and good news for stones

fans, there was a rolling stones concert scheduled at the superdome on sunday night and that was postponed until tonigh tonight. it is on again for tonight so the rolling stones will perform and i can tell you the tickets are still available. it's not too late. >> shepard: sounds like a good trip. rick leventhal. thank you. more power outages could be on the way for new york city. that is what a spokesperson for the power company said. he also said that engineers still do not know what caused that massive blackout on saturday night. tens of thousands of people and business after business from times square to manhattan lost power. it stretched 30 blocks and lasted four hours. broadway shows shut down before they started. cars navigated the crowded streets without lights, subway trains stopped in their tracks.

military base. the wisconsin home where an intruder killed jamie kloss' parents and kidnapped a 13-year-old girl will soon be up for sale. that is according to a real estate listing. it reads, the three bedroom, one bath home including an indoor sauna is located outside of wisconsin about 80 miles north of minneapolis. back in october he now convicted killer broke into the family home, murdered the parents and then took jamie to a remote cabin in the woods for 88 days until she was able to escape. she rode she was too scared to go out in public and couldn't go back home to her family. the man accused of kidnapping and murdering the university of utah student mckenzie lewis and then setting her body on fire is facing a judge for the first time today. they say they immediately lost

their breath when they suspect showed up on screen. last week we found out how she died. the examiner says she had blunt force trauma to the left side of her head and a hole in her skull better than a golf ball. investigators say they found her charred remains in a shallow grave about 80 miles north of salt lake city and pieces of her body in a burnt pit and the suspect's backyard. we still do not know a motive. reporting live with more. claudia tallon. >> she disappeared five weeks ago today on the man accused of brutally killing her has nothing to say that his first court appearance just a few hours ago. 2:30 1-year-old as you mentioned appeared on a closed circuit tv monitor alongside his public defender to hear the judge read the charges against him. murder, kidnapping, desecration of a human body.

the hearing lasted over a minute and he did not enter a plea. some of her friends sat in the front row holding hands. >> immediately lost our breath. we were holding hands and i refused to say this person's name. >> she is obviously referring to the suspect. this tragic story began as a baffling missing persons case and it turned into a murder, the police have not disclosed how they knew each other but they say her cell phone stopped working the moment she met him at a park in the middle of the night. the search of the property turned up a human bone, part of the skull and muscular tissue that matched her dna. fox news has confirmed that hours ago investigators found additional evidence connected to this case along the jordan river parkway trail. with that evidence is we do not know, but it was found a mile away from the suspects house.

the charges filed against a suspect here could warrant a capital case. prosecutors and salt lake city have not decided whether they will seek the death penalty. they say that will happen after a preliminary hearing. everyone is back in court on july 29th and at that point he suspect could enter a plea. >> shepard: thank you. brand-new revelations today about the rich sex offender and accused under aged sex trafficker jeffrey epstein. authorities searched the safe in his home and say they found piles of cash, diamonds, and an expired passport issued with his picture, a fake name, and the address in saudi arabia. they shared this at a bail hearing today here in manhattan where the judge said he needs more time to decide whether to keep epstein in custody or allow for a release on bail. a ruling on that is set for

safe. >> shepard: what are we hearing from the defense team? >> they are basically asking for house arrest. they want him to spend the duration of the trial inside his $77 billion townhouse. they say he will agree to any conditions and he will pay nearly any bond including more than a hundred million dollars in bail. they also say that epstein over the last 14 years has shown to be responsible and they know to there hasn't been any other cases that have come up against him since the accusations between 2002 and 2005, but the prosecution says they found thousands of photos of underaged girls in his mansion over a week ago when they went and larry which makes this only point given the fact i think he has a current danger. >> shepard: bryan llenas reporting live. some younger siblings follow their older siblings with steps,
