thermostat behind me reads 99 degrees but does not take humidity into account. heat index or feels-like temperature is right on 110 degrees. there was big concern that the scorching temperatures would put a big strain on the power grid and we are seeing outages in queens and westchester. about 2000 customers without power right now and considering that one customer can represent one building, the number of people who actually have no air-conditioning and no power right now can be significantly higher than that. in new york people are flocking to beaches and pools. some headlines before they even opened and most extended hours late into the evening. city officials are keeping sprinklers on a playground until dark and even tweeting instructions on how to legally open fire hydrants. they also open with a 500 cooling centers and urge people to keep the blinds down and thermostats reasonable to conserve energy and avoid a possible blackout. >> our fears people dying a minute is very clear. heatstroke can be fatal.

i'll fear is with this kind of temperature people are not used to it is a very rare occurrence, to get to this kind of level heat index over 110. it will feel like over 110 degrees. it is pretty shocking to the body. reporter: more than 200 million americans in 32 states were under heatwave advisories this weekend and could face heat index is over 100 degrees. before the weekend the mayor's of boston, new york city, philadelphia and washington d.c. declared heat emergencies with baltimore and new york issuing code red extreme heat alerts. high humidity and poor air quality are also adding to the risk. in philadelphia retirement home was evacuated to the building lost power, scorching temperatures are being blamed for six deaths and three states including a man who was repairing an air conditioner in an attic in arizona. four people in maryland and former new york giants defensive lineman mitch petrus

excessive heat warnings from boston, new york, philadelphia and d.c. as well as richmond into the carolinas. but not just the east coast is a nationwide concern and we looking over toward indiana, illinois going to the st. louis area down into the mid-south, looking at temperatures as far as the accuweather real temperatures about one tenant areas. the heat is expanded to the southwestern portions of the country. south-central part of the country will continue to stay very hot indeed. were expecting sweltering conditions to continue all the way into atlanta and down throughout of florida with a slice of this through the southeast. because the intensity of the storms surrounding the areas we have the instability happen, your potential flash flooding and hail. we have them in wichita and kansas city as an example. despite the call for severe storms and possibility of 80 mile an hour wind, we are still concerned about dangerous heat even in areas where we are expecting rain. sunday we have this cold front that will bring some relief

britain and iran have been intensifying over recent weeks. especially a few days ago when president trump says the u.s. destroyed an iranian drone that got too close to a warship. then the next day ran took aim at the uk by seizing an oil tanker as we been reporting. let's talk about the possible global consequence of the back-and-forth and if it continues i'm joined now by a former u.s. ambassador, lee, thank you for being with us will be great to have your perspective on this as we been watching all the back-and-forth. experts say the escalating situation in the region is this recent hostile move iran appearing to not only be very risky but they look like they are meant to antagonize and divide the u.s. from allies to help get relief and maybe sanctions the u.s. is imposed. is that how you see it? >> yet, what's clear is that we are in a very precarious situation. it is not entirely surprising that the iranians would be going after british vessel because you recall laura, a few weeks ago the british assisted
1:20 pm
in the seizure of an iranian vessel off the coast of gibraltar. the vessel remains in port and an arrest. and the iranians said that they were going to retaliate. that is what they have done. the british frankly seem a little bit caught off guard by the retaliation. even though it was stated that was the iranian intention. they are caught as you know in a leadership struggle over the conservative party and its future leader. the foreign minister is part of that contest. and they seem a bit back on their heels. obviously they have the ability, the power to defend their vessels but they seem to have been caught surprisingly by surprise. laura: why do you think that is? as you mentioned, the iranians definitely put out there what their intentions were going to be. but how could this happen? it seems odd, right? >> it does seem odd. again i think it is because of
1:21 pm
leadership underway and the conservative party. one would hope that if the navy is up to the task we know that they are, they should be providing better security to their vessels. again, particularly since the iranians had basically announced they would be targeting british naval vessels. laura: i wanted to ask about the safety in this region. there are over two dozen countries that use the strait of hormuz for moving tankers and its critical traffic where they move through. when you hear the audio initially you've heard today we've been playing it come the iranian forces saying quote - you obey, you will be safe. you can fill just dangerous operations in this region really are. how can the uk and other nations, the u.s. too, maintain the safety of the cruise and the vessels with all of this going on? what is the plan? >> this is really only a sovereign can do this is not our companies. the way to do it is through naval escort. that is what the united states has done in the past to secure
1:22 pm
the safety of vessels through, particularly our vessels through international waters and is what needs to be done here. as you know the ministration is working toward some type of plan to have our allies contribute to the effort. but frankly, what needs to happen is very prompt provision of naval security and escort in the time. laura: demonstration is organizing operations sentinel with like-minded nations to deter iran. we'll see how that plays out. and the other issue front center with iran is nuclear program. how do you see that part playing out? >> well, what appears to be the case is that the current administration appears a bit rudderless in terms of what his goals are. the rhetoric has been very high, the president has focused on the nuclear program. of course, the president exited a program or an agreement that
1:23 pm
froze the iranian nuclear program last year. the secretary of state talked about different objectives included forcing them to change the direction of their country. those are his words but no one really knows what that means. a little unclear what the strategic objective is that the ministration is pursuing. and if it is in fact to get the iranians do not develop nuclear weapons, it is unclear why the administration has exited the very agreement that presented the iranians from getting nuclear weapons. unfortunately, you don't have clear objectives it's very difficult to have clear diplomacy. and it's very clear to see frankly the way out of the current crisis. >> a fast-moving story. we will see was developed in the next few days, former ambassador, lee wolosky, thank you. >> thank you. eric: close to home the u.s. military says a russian-made venezuelan fighter jet flew too

1:32 pm
his report is his testimony but you know there's a lot of people who have not read the full 448 page report. so the strategy for democrats is to highlight the areas of the report that they find to be most damning for president trump. particularly, the instances laid out of potential obstruction of justice issues. and highlight them and get more courage and notice for them. eric: probably the main question for the democrats will be mr. mueller, why did you not exonerate the president?what do you expect him to say in response? >> well, there was a portion in the report where he said the law is unclear in this case and because the loss is a sitting president cannot be indicted, we will not make a determination one way or the other. where if the president specifically can be indicted. a sitting president can be indicted so they will probably stick to that.

defense. coming in the months and years ahead. laura: robert i want to get to pay the death count on opiate overdoses in the u.s. is staggering. over 200,000 over the last two decades. many families of those who have died understandably want someone held accountable. when you have families pointing at drug companies and drug companies blaming doctors and on and on, how can you get a big company or entity to pay up and help out? >> has been settlement that have already occurred. purdue pharmaceutical settled with one of the states for $270 million.i think another one settled and so they settle in with some states and setting a precedent where assume their attorneys are telling the pharmaceutical companies is not a good location for you. you will not have good jury appeal i'm sure it went all the way through motion practice where they will allow the students to proceed. again, you have almost 50 different lawsuits all of the country some jurisdictions will not be favorable to the companies. when you have motions fisa get to the point where a jury will

be selected and it will be nearly impossible to have a jury where people have not been touched or affected by one either pill overdose or people who turn to heroin overdoses, it will be very difficult for the companies to get jerry's that are going to give them a fair shake because the one thing jerry's love to do with big companies and spend their money and give it to other people. and you cannot take that risk. you have to look toward pushing it to the point where the jurors in the hallway looking to possibly settle. >> you bring up a good important point. >> yes but is not the fact that there might be jurisdictions may be adverse to pharma companies and doctors of the accused. it is also the cost of litigation. the cost of litigation in these cases are staggering. many times it does not matter whether it's defensible or we can win it really is about how costly it will be to actually prosecute and defend the cases. and that is a big motivator to try and resolve the cases.
