or the heat wave? you're not annoying. good morning, you're watching "fox & friends first." i'm jillian mele. rob: i'm rob schmitt. thanks for getting up early with us. we begin with a fox news alert. a north carolina woman murdered in canada while vacationing with her boyfriend. jillian: police say china desee and lucas fowler were found he dead on the side of the highway. rob: aishah hasnie joins us with the latest. >> reporter: this north carolina woman was brutally murdered, on vacation with her boyfriend. china deese and lucas fowler were found dead on the side of a highway in british columbia. they were on a road trip through canada driving a 1986 chevy van. a woman claiming to have seen the couple, said she saw the van broke down on the side of the

highway. china's brother said the family isn't getting a lot of information from police. >> this is not enough. there's a huge safety concern for people traveling in canada around that area this summer and right now. >> reporter: this is all unfolding amid fears that there's a serial killer on the run. australian media reporting that police found another man dead not far away on the same road next to a burnt vehicle. but authorities insist this is not related to the murdered couple. >> we have nothing to indicate that their deaths are linked to any other active and ongoing investigations in the area of the province or that there's a heightened risk to public safety. >> reporter: canadian police have not released how china or lucas died. the families say they were told they wouldn't be able to have open casket funerals, leading them to believe this is a very brutal killing. jillian: thank you.

president trump vowing to meet with senate minority leader chuck schumer as soon as possible after his visit to the southern border. rob: it comes as mexico averts today's deadline to make an asylum deal with the u.s. jillian: griff jenkins joins us live in washington with how the trump administration is reacting. good morning, griff. >> reporter: good morning, gillian and rob. it appears mexico is doing their part. the bigger question is will congress come to the table. the president tweeting this last night in reference to a trip democrats took to the border on friday, saying chuck schumer has finally gone to the southern border with democratic senators. this is a great thing. he missed a group of immigrants trying to enter the border illegally. he said based on the comments made by chuck schumer he must have seen how dangerous the border is. it is not a fake crisis. he said he wants to meet.

help right now. let's see how much more they're willing to do. we'll see. thank you so much. a massive protest expected in puerto rico today as the island's governor refuses to resign. >> [chanting] rob: hundreds of thousands of people expected to take over one of the island's busiest roads, hoping to convince the governor to step down. overnight, he announced he will not seek re-election but that he won't quit right now over a leaked online conversation showing him mocking women and also hurricane victims. his administration is facing federal corruption charges. today will mark the tenth straight day of protests. jillian: the trump administration still being grilled over this controversial chant at president trump's rally in north carolina. >> send her back! send her back! send her back!

crimes and misdemeanors. we have to let mueller present those facts to the american people and see where we go from there because the administration must be held accountable. jillian: but republicans say that's not on the minds of most americans. >> any thought of impeachment is waning. they know that because the report said there was no collusion, no obstruction. the mueller report is a one-sided report that has not been questioned from the other side. jillian: mueller will testify on the russia investigation this wednesday. rob: 2020 hopeful joe biden is the top choice among democratic voters. some say he would not fight for them. a new cbs poll shows biden is the top pick for 25% of democratic voters in states with early primaries and caucuses. but the survey says only 38% of primary voters feel that biden would fight for them. warren comes in first with 56%, saying she would fight a great deal for them.

democrats are taking a back seat to republicans in fund raising. the republican national committee raising nearly $21 million last month according to federal election commission filings, more than double the $8.5 million raised by democrats. the rnc currently has $43.5 million compared to the dnc's $9.3 million. jillian: today, flash flooding and damaging winds are threatening several states across the u.s., forecasters sending the warning as a cold front passes through the midwest and northeast. rob: it's expected to cool off nearly 200 million people as the dangerous heat wave comes to an end, one that was blamed for at least six deaths. jillian: the extreme heat is linked to major power outages, one forcing an evacuation at a philadelphia retirement community, another leaving 50,000 new yorkers in the dark. rob: some roads buckled in

south dakota. jillian: janice dean is tracking the ongoing heat wave. i saw quite a lightning show coming to work. jillian.>> lightning kills moree than hurricanes and tornadoes. jillian: really? >> they say when thunder roars head indoors and that's a good rule of thumb. current temperatures, you can see where we've got the cold front on the way, that's slicing through the midwest, eventually across the east coast. that will bring the potential for showers and thunderstorms. we have 63 in minneapolis, 67 in chicago, past 12 hours you can see the thunderstorms starting to percolate a across the ohio valley, towards the mississippi river valley, towards the mid-atlantic and the northeast. later on today, into tomorrow, so keep that in mind, we have several storm reports including a lot of wind damage. some hail. but mainly wind and if i could show you the lightning, there would be lightning strikes as the cold front moves through as

anything to 9/11, really? >> absolutely not. it's incomprehensible to say anything so ridiculous. when i was at the border, they were thanking border patrol for taking such good care of them, keeping them safe, providing medical care. they do a lot of humanitarian work. it's dishonest to overlook that on the national stage, anywhere for that matter. we had a member of congress come down to the border, they were amazed at th good care we were providing. rob: when aoc says we want to eliminate dhs, obviously the work that dhs does was happening before it was created after 9/11, right? a lot of these things were happening already. this just kind of maybe brought it all together. so does it necessarily mean it's

an open border idea to just eliminate homeland security as a department? >> well, it wouldn't have to be that and there's always room for argument for reorganization. that's not what aoc says. the others of her squad have called for open borders and the elimination of border patrol. which is why i think she's not arguing for reorganization. which is a fair argument. that's a fair conversation. but that's not what she's saying. jillian: we're facing threats today that we didn't used to face. so it's a different time right now than it's ever been. >> absolutely. homeland security, again, we have other agencies is for enforcing laws and dhs is for the homeland. whether on the border or in the u.s., such as dealing with the

rob: oakland may be a sanctuary city but a new report says that i.c.e. deported thousands of detained immigrants through its airport. according to the bay area news group, nearly 43,000 detained people have been flown in and out of oakland international airport in california between 2010 and 2018. the agency stopped using the airport in october. city and airport officials won't say if they knew about these flights and the mayor is vowing to look into it. jillian: equifax set to pay the ftc over $27 million over a 2017 data breach. the wall stree wall street jourg the deal could be released today. part of the settlement includes the creation of a fund to compensate any customers in what was the largest breach in u.s. history. rob: 2020 hopeful bernie sanders paying his campaign

staffers the same minimum wage he wants to give all americans. >> going to raise the minimum wage to a living wage. we have got to raise the minimum wage. raise the minimum wage to a living wage. jillian: but guess what? that $15 and hour raise comes with a catch. tracee carrasco is here with the explanation. >> good morning, guys. the catch is that staffers' hours are going to have to be cut so they can essentially make that $15 an hour. last week, the washington post reported that some of the junior field staffers, they were upset that sanders, who has been a champion for that $15 an hour minimum wage, he has rallied against a lot of organizations like amazon and walmart, saying they don't pay their workers -- they pay them starvation wages. meanwhile, his employees are upset because in some cases they make below that $15 an hour for the majority, most of those

junior staffers they earn about $36,000 a year which works out to $15 an hour. if they worker more than 40 hours during that week, that can dip below the $15 an hour. that's why their hours will be cut to about 42 to 43 hours a week so they can maintain that $15 an hour. jillian: i guess it's not a surprise that the lion king takes number one, right? >> it was a a huge weekend for the lion king. disney putting out those initial estimates for north america, brought in about $185 million this weekend. its opening weekend. also made about half a billion dollars worldwide. this was a record-setting movie for disney, opening up at its ninth biggest opening of all time. that's not the only record broken this weekend. after nearly a decade o decade e highest grossing movie of all time, avatar beaten by avengers end game with $2.8 billion

killed at least 19 people just last month. authorities have reportedly confiscated more than 30,000 bottles of alcohol sold under six different brands, saying they contain deadly amounts of methanol, which is sometimes added to alcohol to increase its potency. dr. parampal joined us earlier with how dangerous methanol can be. >> the problem with methanol is that it's so much more dangerous than ethanol. it can make you blind. it can damage your kidneys. you might not realize it at first and you can die. even 30 milliliters, that's enough to cause permanent blindness. jillian: tainted alcohol is suspected to be behind the deaths of at least 14 american tourists in the dominican republic. a new law will allow students to take mental health days off from school. this will be an excused absence in oregon, just like a regular sick day. in the past, only physical

>> what you're frying to se -- g to see now is democrats are leaning more to the left. with biden, he's been out of politics for two years. maybe he forgot what happened in 2018 when the democrats took over the house again and so democrats are leaning more towards medicare for all. one thing to understand fully, the distance between medicare for all which bernie sanders is advocating and others, and what biden is trying to do, which is trying to stay straight down the middle, they'll come around to medicare for all. rob: what do you sunshine. >think?>> i disagree. the reason democrats won, the aca did have choice and the choice component is what people are looking for. you can get attention grabbing, it will have diminishing returns. senator sanders -- i think my

colleague should look into that before going forward with these types of debates. rob: biden is kind of all alone as far as the major frontrunners with his plans. they have other people that support it but they don't have much of a chance at this point. he's on the other side of a major part of the 2020 election. >> what biden is trying to do, is he's trying to stay safe and straight down the middle. playing it safe doesn't work in politics. that's what he's trying to do, as well as trying to latch onthe coat tails of -- onto the coat tails of president obama. that's not going to work in 2020. the tide has changed already. rob: they won twice. >> yeah, the tide has changed. we're talking 2020. we're not talking 2008, not

talking 2012 and we saw what happened in 2016 with hillary clinton. i don't see how playing it safe is going to help him this time around. and i do feel that there is definitely the push from the democratic side towards leaning left. thithere's a push on therepublig right. rob: certainly within the primaries there is. i want to show you the long expansive list of people supporting medicare for all and also running for president. if one of these candidates takes the nomination, if joe biden continues to slip and loses this thing, is that a gift to president trump? >> it could be. president trump i think is in a good spot because we're looking at economics, he's trying to solve issues that a lot of the political parties have ignored. government run health care eliminates your choices. veterans died waiting for care because of this government run system where there were no choices, and there were problems. this utopia of everything is free just has its issues and vice president biden, he's experienced this. in my view, he's not going the
