aishah: this is a fox news alert. i'm aishah hasnie in new york. we are waiting for a police news conference from gilroy, california, where there has been a mass shooting at an outdoor food festival. we are hearing at heat three fatalities and multiple people injured. this is about 30 miles south of san jose, 80 miles south of san francisco. you can see a lot of media waiting for police to tell us something. we haven't heard anything from police aside from this is an active crime scene.
10:01 pm
let's go live to claudia cohen who just arrived on the scene. what are you hearing, what's the latest on the scene? reporter: we are here awaiting the press conference with the gilroy police chief, the mayor of gilroy and the ceo of the garlic festival. this is double as a reunification center as people were separated as they raced to escape from the gunfire. i spoke to one of the vendors and she described the horrifying scene. she said she saw the gunman, she describes himming a a white man between 25-30 years old.
10:02 pm
she says he wore a khakis and green vest. she said two of her co-workers in her tent were shot, a man and his wife and they are being treated at a local hospital. she told me if she hadn't been just a few steps away from the tebt at this time -- from the tent at this time, she might have been shot as well. a number of people hoarp here are very upset that they are anxious. this is a traumatic event in this fairly small town, only 58,000 people. the festival started in 979. -- in 1979.
10:03 pm
i myself attended the garlic food festival. it draws families and vendors. there is live music. and this gunman opened fire right in front of the stage with a band was performing. this happened about 5:30 local time. a couple of the vendors i have been speaking to said they were trying to pack things up and they were wondering if what they were hearing was fireworks. there was a pause and a hail of rapid fire bullets. we understand there may have been some people injured because of the chaos of getting out. but we have heard reports that there were three fatalities. we have been hearing from people here that some of their friend
10:04 pm
were shot in the leg and have been transported to local hospitals. now we are just awaiting this news conference. the ceo of the gilroy garlic festival and the police chief to update us. it's been quite a few hours and this will be the first update. and hopefully that they have a suspect in custody. aishah: i'm sure the community is eager to learn what is going on. hoping this will be over soon. claudia, just outside the perimeter of the festival we have seen a lot of police presence, we have seen drones in the air. police with guns drawn. a chopper in the air. are you getting the sense there might be multiple gunmen?
10:05 pm
>> you know, that's a good question tonight. there is an intense police activity and intense police presence here. as you mentioned, a lot of helicopters and drones. i'm looking at some of them flying around now. the people we have spoken to who said they saw this gunman on said they have seen one gunman. the descriptions are about the same. a young man in khakis, firing a gun. we have reports that police have a suspect in custody. perhaps the suspect. road are blocked off and no traffic is getting through except for meet yeah. a lot of these people have their vehicles inside the festival
10:06 pm
perimeter and can't leave. so they are stuck and trying to figure out what to do as well. but at the communications center, a lot of media waiting for the media. this is a family-friendly festival. there were a lot of kid. candace is the witness who told me she believes she saw a child injured in all of this, possibly shot. that would be very, very tragic as well. her co-workers are being treated at local hospitals. another vendor had a coworker shot in the leg as well. now we are about to get an update. aishah: claudia cowan, thanks so
10:07 pm
much. let's listen into our affiliate ktvu and their coverage. >> to delve through all of that. i'm sure they are trying to get fingerprints or get any information on the person or whatever is necessary. they are combing through whatever evidence they can. they are making multiple phone calls. there are police officers scouring this area and where the individual may live. there is an awful lot taking place. not just in this particular area, but wherever that individual may frequent. reporter: melissa is not far from witnessing some sort of search with law enforcement in that area. what have you seen? >> police have been searching the area near a creek for several hours. there are helicopters overhead. i just saw a vehicle that
10:08 pm
appears to be new activity going on. we don't want to show too much because we don't want to exroam my the work they are doing. wdoing. a lot of people heard the gunshots and didn't even realize they were gunshots at first. they shot they were fireworks. it was pop, pop, pop. people tripping over one another. children getting separated from their parents. there were two young children 4 or 5 years old. aishah: let's listen in to this press conference. >> first thing tomorrow morning. my name is captain pedro

10:11 pm
i'm the chief of police for the i. this one of those press conferences you never want to have to give in your community. this one of those press conferences you never want to give in your community. unfortunately we find ourselves in the circumstances where we have to live it today. i am going to give you some brief information with the information i have right now. we have literally dozens of officers working on this as we speak. so a lot more information will be coming to light throughout the evening and into the morning tomorrow. we have additional information to share, we'll push out to our social media platforms. we'll set up another press conference so we can share that information with you.
10:12 pm
it started at 5:41 p.m. there were reports of a shooting on the north side of the garlic festival area. officers were in that area and engaged the suspect in less than a minute. the suspect was shot and killed. it appears if though they had come into the festival via the croak that borders a parking area and used a tool to cut through the fence to gain access to the secure fence line. that's how they got into the festival area itself. we have one suspect that is down, we have some witnesses reporting there may have been a second suspect, but we don't
10:13 pm
know if that suspect was engaged in think shooting or may have been in a support role to the person we have accounted for. we have at least 15 people injured. we have four fatalities that we know of including the suspect. the officers that engaged the suspect obviously, we have a protocol we need to deal with for that. santa clara county has the protocol with officer involved shootings. the complexity with the shooting we are investigating from the suspect. we put out a call for assistance. we had many, many officers in the park at the time as we do any day during the festival, which accounts for the very, very quick response time.
10:14 pm
we put out the call for help. we have gotten help from agencies clear across monterey and santa clara counties. they came from pretty good distances away to provide assistance with our investigation dealing with the chaos at the scene at the time it occurred. there are some thing, reunification, the panic, people go out different ways they when they came in and families got separated. these we have this area set up to try to reunite families that got separated. we have a phone number for people to call for family members. that phone number is
10:15 pm
408-846-0584. we also are asking for any witnesses because there was quite a number of people in the park. anybody that witnessed this incident that can tell us anything, perhaps videotaped anything that might be relevant to this investigation, contact us and we set up a special known number to witnesses as well. and that is 408-846, 0583. that's about what i know at this point in time. >> you are not certain whether there is a second suspect? >> we believe based on witness statements there was a second individual involved in some way, we just don't know in what way.
10:16 pm
>> do saw description of this snern. >> i do not at this point. i don't have any information on the suspect yet. that will take a little bit of time and with the victims as well. it will take time before we identify them and make family notifications. we have gone the assistance from dozens of law enforcement agencies. we are trying to track down and identify leads regarding the second suspect. we are hopeful with the witnesses and statements it will help us to do that. >> are there security cameras?
10:17 pm
>> no. we don't know what the involvement of the second person is at this time. >> can you clarify the number of people injured? and the range of injuries? >> i don't know what the injuries are, i haven't got and report on that. but i know it was up to 15 people the last time i looked at it. i have no idea what they are going to do at this point. >> [inaudible] >> i am sorry i don't have specifics on that other than people reported a subject leaving the area they thought was associated with this person. >> the bill roy officer that took him out? >> it was gilroy officers that shot the suspect.
10:18 pm
i don't have an sage range at this point. >> were any children among the fatalities? >> i don't know. >> what type of weapon was found? >> some sort of a rifle. but i don't know what type of rifle it was. >> we spoke to the people who went to the festival, they had to pass through metal detectors. >> yes, they have to go through metal detectors. they have wands they use and we search bags. >> but the suspect got in through a sentence. >> the information given to me was they cut through the fence to gain access. >> [inaudible]
10:19 pm
>> i have not heard that. it is an active scene. it will continue to be active for some time. >> [inaudible] >> i do not know. >> what can you say about this happening in gilroy? >> you have said he was shooting at random. >> i don't naibility appears that way initially that it was somewhat random. >> your reaction to this happening at this institution of an annual event that happens here. what's your overall take of this violence happening in your community. >> i will make that the last question. the city of gilroy is an incredible community. we have incredible people here.
10:20 pm
and i'm proud. we have such a wonderful couple and this festival is a perfect example of that. it takes thousands of our residents that volunteer their time to put this on for people and raise fund for our community-based organizations and charities. and you can't say that about a lot of communities. the number of people willing to give their time for the betterment of other people is a wonderful thing. it's incredibly sad. the event that does so much good for our community, it's sad that we have to suffer from a tragedy like this.
10:21 pm
>> [inaudible] >> i would say that's a fair characterization. but i'm going to stop now. >> good evening, i'm brian bow, the executive director of the garlic festival. to reiterate a little bit of what scott smithee said. gilroy is an amazing community. a tightly knit community. we are family. we have the wonderful opportunity in the community to celebrate our family through our garlic festival, and for over four decade that festival has been our annual family reunion. such a sad just more any upsetting circumstance that has happened on the third and final day of this year's festival.
10:22 pm
4,000-plus local volunteers work so hard every year. to see the event end this way is one of the most of tragic things i have had to see. we all feel so sad for those impacted, friends, family, neighbors. it's just a horrible thing to experience. and our prayers need to go out to the friend and families of loved ones affected by this. we couldn't be more thankful for the really immediate response of the first responders, the police
10:23 pm
personnel on site. they did an amazing job and we thank them for that. that's all i have to say. i will refer any more questions to anyone else here. thank you very much. >> we'll push that out. i want to take a second to thank you for your patience. understand our community is grieving. this is an active investigation. we have multiple allied agencies currently assisting us. once we solidify the time and location, let's assure we can put that out. thank you, and i appreciate your patience.
10:24 pm
aishah: we are gleaning new information from gill would i's chief of police and mayor. we now know the shooting happened the on the north side of the festival area in gilroy. apparently police engaged the suspect. the suspect had a rifle and that suspect was shot and killed. apparently he got in through the festival grounds the back way. there was security. the suspect came in through a creek and used some kind of a tool to cut through the fence to enter into the festival grounds. when he came to the festival he started to fire seemingly at random. we have confirmed there are three fatalities, and at least 15 people injured. police believe there is a second person involved based on the witness report. they don't know yet as to what
10:25 pm
capacity. whether that person also fired shots or if they simply played a support role. but there is a manhunt under way and that is what we have been seeing for the last several hours. live scenes, police in tactical gear pointing guns into the field, looking for something. they are looking for a acceptingo second person police believe was -- look for a second person police believe was involved. they have no security video to lean on, just witness accounts as they continue to search the active crime scene. steve rogers a former member of the joint terrorism task force. steve, one question that wasn't asked, is the public still at risk as this manhunt is underway? >> the pibs at risk until the
10:26 pm
police are satisfied if there is another individual is apprehended. the police will have to continue with their search. that's why the chief said it's an active investigation. what's good about the information, we finally got some accurate information out there. people will be on the alert looking out for someone that the police are looking for and obviously don't take any action. aishah: unfortunately no suspect description. we don't know if they had a gun, they are wearing, what they look like. what's your advice to people living in that area? >> keep your eyes and ears open. if they hear anything in their neighborhood.
10:27 pm
immediately call the police. i am sure patrols within that immediate area will be rapidly increased, hundreds and hundreds of law enforcement officers are on the ground in that area. the keefe now is stay safe. aishah: police say it sounds like it was at random. it sound like to wasn't a potential target. this was someone who came in and started to fire at random. just to hear the police chief describe how this individual even entered the festival grounds, they did everything right. they have security. they were check bags. they had a perimeter. they had fencing. to learn that suspect had some kind of tool to come in the back way, what does that tell you? >> i don't know if i would con clielts was at random. maybe the victims are random
10:28 pm
victims. did this person target that festival for a reason? it was well planned, it had on planned sometime before the event was randomized. the individual knew what type of weapon he used to cause the most of damage. but what i was impressed with was the immediate response of those police officers in that city. they saved a lot of lives by getting there as quick as they did and doing what they had to do to put an end to this. aishah: we are looking at 15 people injured, 3 fatalities. at one point there were 30,000 to 4 oh,000 people at d -- to 40,000 people. so it could have bench worse.
10:29 pm
when you are on the ground working with all sorts of different partners. the atf is on the scene. what do you want to happen? it's dark. what are your decisions you are making on the ground? >> obviously public safety is first. getting the word out to people, until the second suspect if there is one is captured. i'm interested in any evidence, physical evidence that the policemen find. shell casings from weapons fired. if they find shell casings that are different, two different weapons, i think it's important that that information the police receive will give them an idea there was someone else there. i believe right now ways very, very important is the gathering as much intelligence as they could. they could get that from some of the people being kept safe in a
10:30 pm
safe area. now that they have the shooter who obviously the police chief articulated, they will go to this person's house and go through a forensic you can analysis of their social media platforms, who they know and what they know. they may be able to find out if there is someone different. all this has to go on pretty much within the next few hours. >> claudia cowan talked to one of the festival organizers who saw the gunman. he described him as a young white man 25-30 years old. she he he was quite and he was deliberate. >> quiet and deliberate. on a mission to make sure he would do as much damage as he could which lead me to the
10:31 pm
question why. what was the motive here? that's why i kind of saying this is a random type thing. i agree with the chief the victims aren't going to feel random. what was the motive? that will be important for the police to find out within the next few hours. aishah: do you think there will be changes made to outdoor festivals across the country? there are festivals every weekend in community across the country, and some of them don't even have security. do you think there will be changes? >> they had metal detectors,
10:32 pm
they did everything right, yet someone found a way to get into the festival and cause the damage they did. for those outdoor activities, ii am thinking in my own community, we have street fairs. maybe we'll have to get metal detectors and security. but people can walk between houses and alleyways. if anything, they will hype up their security. aishah: the people still sitting and waiting, all the vendors and folks hog have stuff inside the festival ground. you think police will let them in tonight? as the police chief said. they are looking for a second person. do you think anybody is going back in there? >> no, i don't think so. i think the miss want to be sure
