when you point out obvious flaws in the things they're talking about, they say, well, that's a republican talking point. and i'm like, no, it's actually a fact that you should be able to defend. and i think the same thing with elizabeth warren. when i point out that the things she's proposing are fairy tale economics, she says, oh, you're not being ambitious enough. if you actually look at the things i'm proposing, which is to actually create universal health care where every american has health care as a basic right, but we allow people to have choices, that doesn't sound like a plan that's not ambitious, that actually sounds like a plan that i'll have to work incredibly hard and use every ounce of political capital to potentially get done. and so i think it's just kind of lazy and a dishonest response to people who don't feel comfortable defending these kind of crazy proposals. brian: was it frustrating to just hear the questions and the moderator just went on? >> yeah. what i wanted to say was what i just said to you which is, you

from threats in places like afghanistan? it is not simply enough in 2019 or 2020 to pull troops out. we had three administrations in a row, somehow say end the war, have ended war, pull troops out. troops are still in afghanistan. contingencies are all over the middle east. because there is a threat there. we can have a debate how to best overcome the threat, best monitor it, best keep it off our shores. to simply stand up to say we'll pull all troops out of afghanistan, three predecessors agreed with you when they were on the stage. if you don't take time to understand why they don't agree with i now they become president. your promise to pull them out is empty. anytime a candidate says something along the terms i will probably do this, or i'm going to do that, it is just an empty promise. it is not based on fact. it is based on trying to achieve votes. ainsley: tim ryan was the only candidate at the beginning of the debate when they played "the

5:45 am
in particular, is the president's proposed pullout, where the peace talks are going, does that get you nervous? >> no. because at least i understand the thought process here. if afghanistan can find some sort of peace, they guaranties us, we won't have a threat like al qaeda or the taliban or isis coming from it, we're a part of that negotiation and it's a part of our strategy. standing on a debate stage with no access to any of that information, or understanding of that strategy, promising to blindly pull troops out is not a strategy. i didn't like it when republicans talked about it in 2016. i don't like it in 2020 when democrats do it for no other reason than to win votes. with the white house we hear there is a strategy. afghanistan wants to do peace talks with the taliban. this is how they're going to do it. doesn't mean i like it necessarily, at least i understand it. unlike the 2020 democrats who are simply trying to add something new to bring to the table for the sake of newness. steve: at the debate last night

were three student from high school, i think in lansing, michigan, who i believe took a knee as an homage to colin kaepernick. they were the guests of beto o'rourke. what did you think about that? >> look i have no problem with beto deciding who he is going to bring to his debate. i have no problem with the students. they're high schoolkids. they're not adults yet. they're on their way. they're easily impressionable. they were inspired by colin kaepernick in a way i just don't understand. what is more important to me, if you're polling at zero percent, living in the state of texas as liberal, you can't even win a senate seat there, if you're not doing well with the american people, perhaps something that isn't inherently divisive to adhere yourself to. zero percent you can go up and out. maybe this is a last shot across the bow. i'm not sure. colin kaepernick showed us last month exactly what his protests were about. it wasn't about policing. it was about a disdain for this country and its history the way we overcome it. we're not quite up to snuff for
