elevator. "we get to be on tv together!" >> shannon: i've known you for a long time but i think this is our first show to give it. we have a lot to talk about. the current u.s. china trade war, big focus of the g7 summit. the president sounding optimistic about china restarting talks and the dispute after tensions ratcheted up friday. after china announced retaliatory tariffs on the u.s., and the present respondent bagging tariffs. he said starting in october. today, president trump says he has more motivation to call the thing about the u.s. is profiting in the meantime. watch. speak of the tariffs had at the and very hard in the very short period of time. the united states will have collected over $100 billion in tariffs. i think president xi is a great leader who happens to be a brilliant man. he lost those jobs in the short period of time and it will break on the chinese system of trade. he can't do that.

over the weekend didn't sound great looking at futures. this morning the president has spoken. seems like things are coming down to a bit. >> dagen: it was the message from the vice premier about preaching calm, if you will. and it was the response from president trump. john hoeven ross was on the fox does in their work from "the wall street journal." he says the most important thing to watch, what do companies do in this country? big multinational -- they are sitting down at september to do their budgets for next year. are they going to keep spending? will they keep hiring? ultimately it's very hard to make those decisions if you don't know what the landscape looks like. that was the critical thing. the u.s. consumer is in terrific shape. you see it in walmart sales and earnings. you name it, retail sales. but you have to keep hiring going. if you this economy to hold up. the lack of certainty and the kind of capriciousness and

floundering reese on friday from the president does not help. >> shannon: that is something of the french president, macron, talked about today. not only with our domestic and companies here in the u.s., but for the global economy. it doesn't respond well to this uncertainty. unknowing of what's happening. >> lawrence: i don't think the president is more concerned about the global economy. he's not a globalist, he's more concerned about the country at large. i think he has concerned about the next election, as well. the question, is china going to stay into this fight until the next election? if that's the case, while they waited out? it seems like there trying to come to the table. we don't know what's going to have to initially make moves. i'm not seeing much moving right now. >> shannon: speak your movement i think we see the president getting ready to leap from the g7. we are monitoring that life. i can't remember who to credit for this, but someone said on friday that this present was obviously asked to look toward the election next year. president xi looks for reelection never. china has a different thing going on. >> elizabeth: he's president for life, president xi.
