raping -- vape making people sick. "fox and friends first" starts right now. hello once again, you are watching "fox and friends first" on this friday morning, thank you for joining us. hurricane dorian is 30 miles from the carolina coast packing washout rains, whipping winds, dangerous storm surge, spinning out possible tornadoes with its sheer force. we have team coverage this morning, senior meteorologist janice dean tracking dorian's potential land fall. todd pyro in wilmington, north carolina but we begin with
1:02 am
aishah hasnie, as dorian slams the coast. we can barely see. can you hear us? >> reporter: i can hear you. this is incredible. i've never seen wind or rain slamming us around quite like this was nothing like charleston, south carolina. the wind is picking up the rain and slamming it around. it hurts my face every time it's maxon to me and particularly when the wind gust is really bad it literally knocks the breath out of me, hard for me to speak because it suctions my mouth. there is rain and water getting into every crevice, my ears, my eyes, my nose, inside my jacket. there is no protection from this rain and wind. i don't know if you can see the trees whipping behind me but that is how strong these wind gusts are. we are worried about these power

lines, these light poles that keep the moving around. because the ground is wet and the wind is so strong we've got to watch that. around these areas there's a curfew in place. atlantic beach is on a tiny little island. hopefully folks either evacuated because it is just a sliver of an island. the evacuation order, curfew order in place, we were driving in at 9:00 pm and got pulled over by the cops because they wanted to know who we were and where we were going and why we weren't inside already. every hotel room is booked solid in this area because people want you to get off that island and police -- onto the mainland but right now there is absolutely no way anyone is asleep at this hour, this storm is so strong and loud and angry and we are right in the thick of it.
1:04 am
shannon: we will see what is coming your way so be careful out there. we appreciate your coverage. look like the power is still on. >> it is for now but all the way coming up from charleston we saw power trucks, electricity trucks, power crews from all over the place heading toward this area. >> be careful out there, thank you. two hours south to wilmington hurricane dorian whipping up tornadoes flooding streets overnight. todd pyro in wilmington, what is it like. you are not seeing the amount of rain aishah hasnie was. shannon: it is a 2 hour difference. it seems she is getting what we got 2 or 3 or 4 hours ago. it seems around midnight,
1:05 am
11:00 pm midnight, is when wilmington got hit the hardest. we are not done by any stretch of the imagination. the rain is increased and decreased at various points and we have been out here. one thing we did not see the we were expecting to see was an intense storm surge. everybody said this area was going to be underwater. as you can tell we are not underwater, but there is a fairly okay chop in the water but nothing like we were expecting at this point. this is all about the wind, let's look at the video we shot earlier where you can see it was much worse in the wilmington area earlier, the wind, the water, everything much worse but those signatures in this area seems to be tornadoes, throughout yesterday whenever you were with a crowd of people you heard the tornado warnings go off on everybody's phone,
1:06 am
seemed it was happening every half-hour and you can see significant tornado damage throughout various parts of this area. in and around wilmington. when we talk to the police chief in wilmington he said of all things you could have in a tornado, storm surge, rain, he was most worried about wind in dorian. >> 200 personnel are ready to get out there, work intersections, help clean out the roadways, have downed power lines. we expect a lot of power outages in the area. we learned a lot from florence last year so we know what to expect. the winds will be higher in this event in florence last year. >> in terms of wind impacts, so far at last count, there are less than 120,000 customers
1:07 am
without power in the state of north carolina, far less than anticipated but as you know we are not anywhere near close to being done with this storm just yet. shannon: we will ask janice and let you know when the danger has passed, thank you. janice dean live in the weather center tracking the latest on hurricane dorian. you saw two spots along the coast, the storm still whipping stuff up. >> of course and we got a new advisory, the storm has weakened a little bit and it appears on satellite the center is coming on short. will this be a landfall, might not be technically a landfall but you can certainly see the eye making impact across portions of the outer banks. we have to wait for the national hurricane center to make that point of reference and will this technically be a landfall? his the satellite radar and you
1:08 am
can see the center of the storm coming very close to beaufort and atlantic and cedar point. we will see if this is technically a landfall in the next few minutes. we will keep you updated but landfall is just a technical point, the lowest pressure point comes on land. the effects are widespread from the storm up and down the north and south carolina coast up towards virginia and we are still dealing with the storm towards the area of new england this weekend. along with storm surge and outer bands bringing upwards of a foot of rainfall and hurricane force windss we've had dozens of reports of tornadoes from yesterday. this is one of the biggest hurricanes to produce this amount of tornadoes across these areas so that is a concern throughout the day today as these outer bands move on shore and we are ready have that

rotation so tornadoes are a possibility, flash flooding obviously happening in parts of north carolina up towards virginia and that is the center of the storm, the worst of the storm surge and heavy rains will come from the northeast side of this so there are your flash flood warnings, impact for parts of south carolina up towards north carolina, even into virginia so we will continue to monitor it and let you know if there is a technical landfall. it doesn't matter. the effects are widespread along the coast. >> all the tornadoes, i don't recall talking about this amount of tornadoes. >> you can see tornadoes with a landfalling tropical system but the fact that we've seen over 2 dozen in the last 24 hours is incredible. >> it was an unusual hurricane from the beginning. fox news alert, a kidnapping

securing the southern border region the report showing border apprehensions have plunged 30% in just one month. president of the national border patrol council says this is just more proof the president is driven by results and he joins us. we appreciate you joining us. let's bring up the numbers as we begin our discussion. border apprehensions, the decline in august was by about 20,000 from 71,999 in july down to 51,000 in august. what do you attribute this to kick you >> look at what drove all these people to start crossing the border in the first place, all the rhetoric from the left talking how we need to release these people into sanctuary cities, we shouldn't be holding them in our facilities. all of that talk invited people to violate our laws in the first place and what donald trump did was looked this and said i've
1:17 am
got a problem, congress isn't helping resolve the problem so he went into mexico and forced mexico to sign a deal with us that any other president any of his predecessors would have loved to have had and that is the driving force that is driven these numbers down and we expect to see them go down in months to come as well. >> that required mexico to deploy 6000 troops to the national guard to intercept migrants. they are doing work on their end. >> it is not just -- the agreement was 6000 and mexico have stepped up and done even more than that. we seen as many as 15,000 on the border services donald trump and these are the results be american public expected when they elected businessman to go into the white house. is not a conventional politician and everybody has to understand that. he comes in and does things

differently, not in the same political session that frankly hasn't it gotten the results we needed in my 22 year career. shannon: let's go to this new poll that shows 64% of american voters will not the for 2020 democrat who once open borders. why do you think they keep talking about it? >> they are pandering to their base. it is amazing the left accuses donald trump always trying to appease his face when in reality it is the exact opposite. normally when someone is accusing you of doing something it is because they are doing exactly what they are accusing you of doing, the left is trying to pander to their base and are not worried about the general election right now. they are worried about the primaries and they will have to go far left when in reality the american public if they come out in the general election and advocate open borders they are going to lose and lose badly because the american public has
1:19 am
spoken and spoken many times that they want the border security. they want a president who is going to take care of the american public while at the same time being very welcoming to legal immigration. >> there is a big difference. keeping his promises seems to be working, hopefully the trend will continue. thank you for joining us, we appreciate it. hurricane dorian pounds in the carolina coast. we are tracking the latest. and healthcare is expected to be a hot topic at the democratic debate. who is pitching what? healthcare expert seth gibson is here to break it down for us.
1:23 am
>> welcome back to "fox and friends first". this is a live look at north carolina, category one hurricane dorian bringing intense winds, shaking the camera, heavy rain along the coast of the carolinas. the eye wall is approaching the state's outer banks in the state of north carolina. over 2 dozen tornadoes have been reported in north and south carolina and you can see homes in brunswick county ripped apart as a result of that. hundreds of thousands waking up without power this morning and we will continue to track the latest for you so stay tuned for that. in one state, the democratic debate in less then one week and with healthcare becoming one of the top issues of the 2020 election taking a closer look at
1:24 am
the democrats plans. author of the cure and hope for -- healthcare expert stepped in with a closer look. thanks for joining us, appreciate it. we are talking that debate coming up. let's look at who is participating in that, we have ten candidates able to meet the qualifications and one of the big issues will be healthcare and you can see from this poll that 36% of people think that is the top issue facing america today, economy coming in second, 10% less but healthcare big issue for them. when we take all the candidates everyone talking medicare for all and everyone over here the candidates support some version, these do not support it. >> let's be real when talking about medicare for all it is not medicare at all. when you start to break down the
1:25 am
policy it is more of a politics scenario and so the challenge with everybody talking medicare for all is single-payer is they haven't shown how they will pay for it. $3.4 trillion is what most of the plans would cost, the current tax rate just to pay for it. shannon: bernie sanders is the only one who has been honest about raising taxes to cover it. some private insurance, the candidates who say they want to get rid of it and then don't need to end this. >> if you are talking medicare for all the current medicare system utilizes the private pay system. you would have to dismantle the current private pay system to implement medicare for all. the other thing to consider that hasn't been talked about, you have 3 million jobs currently tied into the system. if you eliminate it eliminate 3 million jobs overnight. shannon: people need to be aware
1:26 am
of that, the next one is candidates who support creating a public option and you can see all the democratic candidates on board for this. >> everybody saying the government needs to run healthcare. the government hasn't done a great job with the va lately. if you want to stand in line with your healthcare these days, the challenge, the only candidate who has any type of financial modeling is joe biden which still $500 billion short of what the public option would cost. shannon: no doubt he will be talking about that in the debate coming up. covering illegal immigrants, illegal immigrants should because it under the healthcare plan. these candidates say yes, these candidates a now. these candidates haven't said one way or the other and the caveat is yang who says they have to be on a pathway to citizenship to be covered by the health care plan. >> this is a big debate. americans have good hearts.
1:27 am
we want people to be taken care of but we have a lot of citizens who don't have healthcare so the concern should be about our citizens first and then talk about how we reach out our hands. >> speaking of reaching out importing drugs from canada, this is another topic that is, recently, these candidates say yes, these candidates say now. >> in the current healthcare system is a lot of protectionism for pharmaceutical companies, this is something most americans should get on board with, what does it look like? there needs to be conversation about that but we need to talk about bringing in drugs from other countries. >> that can lower drug prices for people. >> in a free market system competition drives down costs. >> the idea behind healthcare in general. >> thank you for joining us. coming up, the time is half past the top of the hour. speaking of healthcare, the cost
1:28 am
1:31 am
>> half past the top of they are, hurricane dorian reaching the carolina coast right now, packing washout rain and dangerous storm surge. this storm spinning up tornadoes with sheer force, you see the strength of those whipping winds. we have complete team coverage, janice dean tracking the potential landfall, todd pyro live in wilmington, north carolina but we start with aishah hasnie as dorian slams

the coast right now. >> we were just talking a half hour ago you mentioned power outages we are now officially out of power. we just lost power 5 minutes ago, the reason you can see me is we have two vehicles pointing their headlights at me. this is what it looks like when one of them is turned off. this is what we are dealing with and we did see up here from charleston, a slew of power trucks heading this way so i know they were expecting this and they were prepared. they put the town on mandatory curfew at 9:00. police officers were pulling people over on the way in and asked what we were doing. we said we were covering this for fox news.
1:33 am
the wind is pretty strong, whipping this rain all over the place getting into every crevice, my years, my eyes, my mouth, i am swallowing a bunch of it and we are watching the power lines. this light pole because every once in a while it shakes, the ground is wet and the winds whipping around. we don't want to see it hit the ground anytime soon. this is a powerful storm and nobody is asleep in this town right now. we are hoping people evacuated from atlantic beach which is just that way, not far at all, the ocean, we hope people got off that island because it is just a sliver of land, and apparently that is where the eye is just hovering over now so we are not far from that, very strong storm, hoping everyone stays inside shelters and stay away from those windows and hope we get through the night. shannon: be careful, it is
1:34 am
dangerous enough. when it is pretty black, the rising water and wind, be very careful, thank you. to our south of wilmington, hurricane dorian whipping up tornadoes, flooding streets overnight. todd pyro live at the riverwalk in downtown wilmington where we can see, you appear to have power at this hour. >> still power at this time but it is the signature of dorian in the wilmington area is going to be wind, it is finishing its john hancock as we speak. definitely the wind still going strong, we expect that to happen for the next couple hours or so and we expect later today when we get out into the general downtown area and throughout the wilmington area we are going to see the road flooded. we saw it yesterday when we were driving around after a little bit of rain. some roads were completely
1:35 am
flooded out. we expect to see more of that today but we keep coming back to the wind. we heard janice mentioned tornadoes, i mentioned tornadoes. when we talked to the mayor 24 hours ago he said the wind was going to be the issue in dorian. >> is going to be more a wind event then florence was which was more rain event, we had 36 inches of rain that fell before it but this seems like a significant wind event for us. >> when we heard from local officials, they are going to be in and around the north carolina handling whatever comes to pass. they were prepared for water rescue and it seems like a wind response when all is said and done. shannon: we appreciate it. let's talk about the wind and rain, tracking the latest on hurricane dorian. >> we get a new update at 5:00
1:36 am
and we get a new track but i can tell you the center is coming close but we don't think it will make technical landfall. the best chance of landfall will be a pattern us in the next couple hours but a lot of people want to know about landfall, just the lowest pressure point as the center comes on shore. the results are the same and that is battering waves, storm surge, hurricane force winds and heavy rainfall. that is where we have the core of the strongest winds toward the outer banks, atlantic getting hit quite hard with storm surge and heavy rain and hurricane force winds, there is the radar so you can see the center is right offshore in morehead city and atlantic so that center has to come right on shore to technically be a landfall and it is just a point of reference.
1:37 am
we have seen 2 dozen reports of tornadoes and i did some research. in 2004 i had over 100 reports of tornadoes and that was the most tornadoes we have ever seen in a tropical system so we are going to see potentially more tornadoes today unfortunately on the northeast side of this storm as it makes its approach to landfall. there is the wind field, tropical storm force winds 200 miles from the center of the storm, 60 miles from the center of the storm where we are seeing hurricane force winds and we will see the worst of the storm surge and wind and rain. let's look at the track, we will get a new track in the next few minutes but we are still going to see potential for hurricane force winds and all the results for the next several hours. eventually moves to the north northeast very quickly. we will see the outer bands across portions of new england and new brunswick in tampa is dealing with a strong almost extratropical system as we get
