like? >> reporter: i'm taking a bad beating, the wind gusts are out of control. nothing like charleston, south carolina. the wind is picking up, the rain all over the place, hurts when it hits my skin and when that wind hits my face it is hard to breathe. i have to swallow my breath for a second. these are not the conditions you want to be out in. there is a curfew in place in morehead city starting at 9:00 last night, cops making their rounds, wanting to know who we were, why we were not inside already. the good news is the power is back on. the power was out half an hour ago but the scary news is what looks like a transformer blue. it is hard to breathe.

we saw a spark go off and we are worried about these polls that keep shaking and the ground is wet. we will keep watching this but we are in the thick of it. this is the worst i have felt it all morning. atlantic beach is just that way, the ocean just that way and that is where the eye wall just passed through. this is the thick of it right now and i'm telling you there is not one hotel room in this area that is not taken up and we hope that is because people on the island evacuated and got to the mainland because it is a little sliver of an island, not where you want to be in these conditions. a monster storm probably keeping everybody up at night, so loud and so strong and so dangerous. rob: you are not far from the eye. appreciate it. about two hours to herself in wilmington, hurricane dorian whipping up tornadoes, flooding streets.

carley: todd pyro at the waiver walk in downtown wilmington. what is it like? >> reporter: this is what we got a few hours ago. when you think of the w words associated with a harrington -- hurricane, waves, that is not the focus. of waves were the issue, if we had the storm surge that was predicted i would be standing in waves because this river would be where i am standing. water, yes, we fully expect we will see water in roadways but the w word that is the winner, wind. we are getting hit with wind and this is nothing compared to what it was earlier. when you think about tornadoes, the signature impact of the storm when all is said and done in wilmington the recovery is going to be focused on the power. the individual we spoke to about from the power company.

we don't have that. basically talking about the issue with regard to recovery, what will happen in the days after. the weight is working aishah hasnie alluded to earlier, you have all the power companies converging on affected areas as the area becomes clear. let's say wilmington becomes clear, the power companies move here and closer and closer, then they go to aishah hasnie and deal with the situation, resources are staged through the area to respond as quickly as possible, 150,000 outages throughout north carolina. carley: got to get power up and people back to normal life. janice dean live in the weather center tracking the latest on hurricane dorian. how different things are between wilmington where it seems drier and morehead city where aishah hasnie is getting slammed with rain.

>> aishah hasnie is getting the strongest winds. we are not reporting in morehead city. you see the red and yellow, that is where we have the core of the strongest winds coming on short and we are getting wind gusts in excess of 50, 60 mph offshore. we are 15 miles offshore. the center of the storm, we think there could be landfall later today around cape hatteras. there is a chance it might not make landfall at all but the results are going to be the same regardless if we have a landfalling hurricane, widespread hurricane force winds along the coast of north carolina, a foot of rainfall and still dealing with 4 to 7 foot storm surge. the peak wind gusts, 90 miles off the coast of south carolina. charleston harbor 75 mile-per-hour winds and hilton head 57 mile-per-hour winds.

tornadoes, 2 dozen reports of tornadoes. we can see tornadoes with landfalling hurricanes that come close to shore because of these outer bands. this is quite a number of tornadoes from yesterday across heavily populated areas. and we still have a tornado watch in effect for elizabeth city towards norfork so we will see results of north carolina towards virginia and even new england could see at least tropical storm force winds and outer rain bands. there is the storm surge over the next couple hours and the storm will move offshore. we could see potential for tropical storm force impact across new england on the weekend. rob: dorian running right along the coast. a kidnapping suspect in custody

accused of shooting two sheriff deputies. one officer struck in the head fighting for his life in madison county, mississippi and the other side in the arm. deputies were responding to a domestic kidnapping call when they say edgar edward took off leading officers on a chase, crashed his car and opened fire and shot himself and rushed to the hospital. he's facing attempted murder charges. and american service member, taliban suicide bombing, expected to be identified. that is near the us embassy and nato headquarters in kabul claiming the lives of a romanian servicemember and ten civilians marking the second deadly attack this week as the united states works to finalize a peace deal with the taliban and as they continue bombings. 16 american servicemembers have been killed in afghanistan this year. carley: a charging cell phone might have caused the devastating boat firing california. a crew member believes the fire

rob: the estranged husband of jennifer doos arrested again. the explosive details from that day. carley: they found blood in the garage, they say he got rid of her body and trash bags. rob: why hasn't this man been charged with murder yet? joining us is former homicide detective brian foley. obviously there is no body. that has to be a big reason. >> there is a lot of evidence, we can't tell you where jennifer is at this point but i can tell you where she isn't, in court defending herself. that is where you have connecticut state police and

homicide detectives and the state attorney's office. he is working it and they will be there to defend her. we don't know where she is. we know where some of her blood is. >> police are slowly building a case against him. you talk about the blood in the new arrest warrant, what i found most shocking is it talks about the car seat where jennifer's blood was found. the car belonged to an employee who helped police later, that he demanded he get the car seats changed. that sounds like incriminating behavior. >> that is an indication of guilt. you can see this is fairly well planned out crime, whoever is eventually charged with it but unfortunately, underestimated

some technology out there, the biggest break in this case was the camera system when they put that up and i can only imagine the killer's face when they heard on the news they had cameras getting dumped. carley: it was a guy who matched his description. >> the truck and everything matches certain indications. he took those bags to an impoverished minority black and hispanic neighborhood and that is insulting to people in that neighborhood. that's why those cameras were put up in the first place. protecting that neighborhood, no other reason he would travel from farmington to hartford. rob: we saw many surveillance pictures of the truck. on the day of the crime, let's look at information from the arrest warrant, the girlfriend

-- why she thought he would be washing that toyota tacoma. her reply was obviously all the evidence says because you showed me the picture of the blood in the door, because the body of jennifer was in there. the body of the wife was in there. you got her against him. >> that is one part of the investigation but the obvious question is why haven't the police made an arrest at this point? is a long investigation and we only have one bite of the apple to get this right and time is on our side and we have an obligation to the family. this is a huge investigation, you can't imagine how much video had to be watched and detectives have to go through this and the state attorney is very calculating, very intelligent, playing chess and it seems like taking a long time, these don't play out on a timeline.

carley: there is a reason it is taking so long went to the naked eye there is so much evidence. what are the next steps police and detectives working the case? >> we have tips coming in all the time, still more video, things going on behind the scenes. there is not a rush, we know where the suspect is every second of the day. they are taking their time so investigators have a lot of steps, going through evidence in the dumps and the trashcan and so much evidence nobody knows about it this point that police have been scientific services have analyzed at some point, chess versus checkers. rob: not going to play it out in the media. carley: the time is 18 after the hour.

rob: aishah hasnie in morehead city near the coast of north carolina and you are close to the eye of the storm. >> reporter: it is just this way. behind me is the water and the emerald isle. atlantic beach is right there. we hope people got off the island, evacuated and a good sign of that is we call around to the hotels and every hotel in morehead is packed. it was hard for us to find a room and this town is on a curfew that was placed at 9:00. you see how strong the gusts are. i keep losing my breath when it hits me and the rain, it hurts and feels like needles sticking you. that is how strong the wind gusts are, swirling around and you see around me as it continuously smacks me around. you can't see it but there is a

>> result will be the same even if it was a 2 or close to a 3 the storm surge is 4 to 7 feet, we will see gusty hurricane force winds on the outer banks. good news is the worst of it is out of morehead city. it is moving to the northeast. we haven't had a landfall yet across the us mainland. we could have that happen in the next hour or so over cape hatteras where the center of the storm, just a technicality where the lowest pressure point comes across land. people want to know if there is a landfall, that will go in the history books. satellite radar imaging, where the strongest core of winds are north of atlantic where we see hurricane force windss. we will see the backside of this storm move on shore over the next several hours. there is the future radar. still with us across the outer banks, still seeing hurricane

force windss in north carolina and virginia and we could see tropical storm force winds even across long island towards new england. there is the future radar saturday still dealing with potential for tropical storm force windss which extend 220 miles from the center of this storm. as we get into saturday and sunday the canadian maritime will have to deal with this system. greatest risk for flash flooding has been across the carolinas towards virginia, storm surge, 47 feet, low-lying areas. there is the forecast wind gusts, tropical storm force winds, possibly hurricane force winds across cape hatteras. towards new england tropical storm force winds could affect us across cape cod.

solutions wouldn't solve the mass shootings we have seen. >> what would solve that problem? >> one of the things i'm advocating is as a teenager i don't think just because you magically turn 18 years old you should have your record expunged. there are people, not kids to get into fights or have too much to drink when they are underage but they are killing pets, beating their parents, doing things that should remain on the radar of law enforcement and those who perpetrated these mass shootings these are people that had a record and in psychological care or there was an analysis. in high school, every kid knows if there's somebody in that high school who is really off their rocker and really dangerous those people need to be on the radar of law enforcement and should be prohibited from getting guns. that is what the record is. >> support universal background
