>> nice it be with you. thanks for coming back. >> you have something going on. >> i'll be down in the swamp, hanging out with the swampy friends. >> on fox news sunday. >> watch "outnumbered" now. >> fox news alert, parties ideological divide on full display. fiery debate in houston, texas. top 10 candidates sharing the stage for the first time with all eyes on the front-runner, joe joe biden, your eyes on are "outnumbered." here today harris faulkner and melissa frances, katie, and juan williams. it is friday, let's do it, "outnumbered." >> juan: the mood here is good, you guys are ready for the weekend. >> harris: we are, we are ready for the news, let's get to it. former vp was a frequent target,
9:01 am
progressive challenged moderate proposal, one moment got buzz. former housing secretary julian castro seemed to take a swipe at biden's fitness. >> the difference between what i support and you support vice president biden, you require them to opt in. >> they do not have to opt in. >> you just said that. >> are you forgetting what you said, forgetting what you said two minutes ago? >> two minutes ago, they had to buy in, now they don't have to, you are forgetting that. >> oh. >> what is the spin today, castro says it is all about policy. >> he denied saying people would have to buy into his plan. i was ark amazed he denied saying people would have to buy into the plan, that is why i pointed it out, if somebody on the debate stage says one thing
9:02 am
and then two minutes later they deny they said it, i will call them on that. >> harris: meanwhile, critics argued last night was a failure for all democrats. columnist michael goodwin wrote this in the "new york post," the winner is donald trump. no single candidate could claim clear victory, displaying why they were all unelectable, end quote. wow, juan, you have anybody else? >> juan: well, we could see if you want to run, harris. >> harris: please, i would run as an independent shopper. what did you think i was going to say? >> you would definitely win that. >> harris: juan, this is concerning maybe for your party, you had bernie sanders, someone stole his platform, like in the pocket of many people last night. amy klobuchar came out as moderate, if not more so than joe biden. i saw twitter activity among
9:03 am
friends, some fox, some outside, we forgot so-and-so was running, people up there with almost no name recognition. >> juan: to me, that was best debate democrats have had so far. >> harris: why? >> juan: you have 10 people one night on stage. you had the leading contenders, all of them together. first time warren and biden on the same stage. >> harris: right. >> juan: the first half-hour was powerful, clear healthcare is number one concern. >> harris: we knew that last november. >> juan: right, you saw spiritted and real debate. the key point here, any of the three now are rated in the polls as beating donald trump. >> harris: biden, sanders warren? >> juan: right, even buttigieg is beating donald trump. >> harris: how did he do last night? >> juan: interesting in the way he comes across as an adult, reasoned person, at times he had
9:04 am
wonderful response when andrew yang had the idea of -- >> harris: voters? i caught it. >> juan: that was original, that was fun. memorable moment is what you just played, harris, castro taking out the long knife for joe biden. and i think that is because you have people on the stage who are clearly also rant at this point and feel they have to go after the front-runner. he didn't do it in an effective way, ended up damaging him among democrats. >> harris: i think you are right about that. when you say ahead of the top three or ahead of the president in the poll, do you believe if the election was held, all three would beat him? >> juan: yeah. >> harris: you believe in that your heart? >> juan: it is not up to me, the numbers are, percent of americans can't vote for this guy, that is if it is referendum on trump. melissa, trump versus alternative and trump is able to say, you are going to vote for that socialist?
9:05 am
>> harris: biden said it to sanders. sanders is making a point about corporate america. he says for a socialist, you believe in big companies more than i do. i mean, kennedy, come on, everybody on the stage and weave been reporting it for quite sometime with the word socialism next to a democrat, does a six-point plus lead generic name with the word socialist does against president trump. wow, biden called sanders and it is not untrue. >> kennedy: it is feel-good exercise for senator, damages your electability as a president. we will see that. i do believe that one progressive is going to be the nominee. i don't think joe biden hit it out of the park the way he had to. he did have some missteps. it was like a c plus performance from him. what i did notice, of many people, maybe the fact they were on the same stage, they seem to have gotten better. the debate process brought out more in them and i think part of
9:06 am
that was asking questions they couldn't where iiiggle out of at empty platitude. we are past the platitude stage and the herd has been called, you are seeing people be competitive in substantive ways. >> harris: so criticism, icaty, i'm seeing, talking points for senator harris, i was watching last night, talking to people today, voters, potential voters. mmm, broke out talking points. >> from the beginning, kamala harris seemed insecure over policy change. we saw her change in position, eliminating private healthcare, unable to defend her record as prosecutor. i thought amy klobuchar did a good job of defending the reason why she wanted to be prosecutor to defend and help people that harris seem to be standing up
9:07 am
for. incredible job run og her own record. joe biden, harris, you are right, something weave been talking about as top issue for americans. joe biden going to run on obamacare, that will bring up bad memories. obamacare is talked about as good thing, democrats are going so far to left as far as eliminating private experience for people. let's not forget, obamacare destroyed the private healthcare system, skyrocketed premiums, it took millions of people off their plan, biggest lie barack obama told, if you like your doctor, you can keep it, which biden and elizabeth warren repeated last night, there is the obamacare problem and elizabeth warren making this insane argument that there is too much paperwork with the insurance companies and you are going to be more streamlined with a government-run program, which is a lie. >> the dmv -- >> harris: i want to jump in with this, hannah, we started the conversation with joe biden and i want to get back to the
9:08 am
front-runner and get your response. after julian castro went after joe biden, apparently it was like a good idea for other people. here is senator cory booker >> we bring social workers in to homes and parents to help them deal -- >> i think castro had really legitimate concerns about can he be someone in a long, gruelling campaign he get the ball over the line. he has every right to call that out. >> harris: ooh, we heard bits and pieces of two things when we heard that. >> juan: you have every right to call him out if you think he is unstable. castro's problem was, he was wrong. >> harris: you are right. >> juan: joe biden was right. >> harris: he was also too harsh, there is a way of going about it a little bit more surgically and castro looked more desperate than he needed to and took points away from himself, probably in the moment, it was a harris moment from the first debate and it really
9:09 am
wasn't. looking back, if you don't like biden, watching the wincing for him. i don't think that is reaction julian castro wanted to elicit. cory booker did kind of have -- >> harris: that is what i wanted to ask. >> a better night. he's in the bottom rung now and fighting like crazy to work his way up and he's having to find -- >> harris: did he help himself last night? >> last night he did, he did pretty well. i don't think anyone had a stand-out performance, elizabeth warren certainly didn't. everyone was waiting for her to slice and dice joe biden and bernie sanders. >> juan: i think -- >> harris: quick before the block ends, i was going to say, i think joe biden did himself in with the record player moment. that is the moment where, phone. let's watch it since we're talking about it. go ahead. >> we bring social workers into phones and parents to help them deal with how to raise their children. not they don't want help. they don't know what to do. play the radio, make sure the
9:10 am
television, make sure you have the record player on at night. >> harris: i never had a record player and i'm not young. i don't know, that is tough. >> it is kind of joe biden in a nut shell, i'll bet he didn't become the nominee. i watched a lot of football last night and the rest today, i think it is elizabeth warren at this point. >> harris: can i ask something, though, and i don't know who this person would be, if there is a magical something out there, if it is not this 10 and not the five in waiting, who were woeching their scores would go up across the board to get into the debate, i don't know if they can make the october one, who could be be? anybody? >> hillary, hillary. >> i think elizabeth warren, it is hers to lose at this point. it has become about who has the enthusiasm and the passion. it is not about being broad, it is about having a rabied base and she's building that through our policy day after day after day. >> juan: has there been one day,
9:11 am
melissa, when joe biden hasn't had the lead in this race? answer no, i don't know why you refuse to see joe biden and see in fact most democrats, conservative and moderate are behind joe biden. they think he could beat donald trump. >> harris: i wouldn't be that confident, juan. >> juan: i'm not confident. >> coffee. >> juan: okay. >> harris: the president had counter-programming last night. one thing the hill was reporting today, he at one point said, it is her. he had comments about elizabeth warren overtaking joe biden, interesting he would look at that and say that and use nicknames. we'll move on. the d.o.j. says no way to andrew mccabe request to avoid prosecution. whether the fired f.b.i. director will now be indicted, plus the president says democrats want to take away people's guns, just hours later, he's proven right. how it played with voters.

ak-47, we will not allow it to be used against fellow americans anymore. >> harris: so that was interesting. katieshlgs, huge mong, that got a ruckus response, what do you think? >> katie: interesting beto o'rourke is using incorrect terminology, fundraising off this and making this claim this is a buyback from the government. americans don't buy firearms from the government, it is not buyback. they buy them from licensed dealers, get from family and friends or through passing them down generationally through the family. it is not buyback, the government never owned them in the first place. he is proposing to criminalize americans, upward of 20 million americans for something they legally purchased through the legal system, through the lawful system, they own legally and
9:19 am
lawfully and turning them into criminals overnight and saying we will take away something you own privately and you legally purchased. beto o'rourke, a year ago, running for senate against texas senate ted cruz said the opposite, if you have an ar-15, you should keep it and continue to use it lawfully. that is where he stands on the issue, it is a political talking point now, when it is convenient and he's changed his position multiple times. new ban on semiautomatic rifles will not do anything to reduce crime, the clinton-era law did not. one more thing on president trump, everyone says we should do something, there are consequences for doing something that doesn't work or has unintended consequences on the other end of the issue, they have to be careful about implementing policy that doesn't address the issues they are talking about. >> juan: let's be clear, you are
9:20 am
making it like it is radical. the buyback. >> no such thing as buyback. >> juan: yes, there is. we have seen this in other countries and it has worked. >> it hasn't, actually. >> juan: the key point, republicans and democrats support background checks, laws, closing loopholes at gun shows and the like. >> what is the loophole, juan? >> juan: you don't have to register, you don't have to say you purchased this weapon, we know you have this weapon. in all cases, majority of american people side with beto o'rourke, even on something like assault weapons, in terms -- >> what is an assault weapon? >> having high magazine ability. >> what is an assault weapon, juan? >> juan: you know this, you are gun owner and nra owner, i'm not. >> made that distinction and the umbrella of assault weapon is growing vastly that any semi-automatic weapon is going to be --

they didn't blame as much extremist views, 57%, and 37%. they are blame nothing my mind, the people about what is going on. >> what do you mean? >> people pulling the trigger. they are blaming the extremist views and language versus the weapon. their conversation is -- >> they are right about that, guns don't typically fire themselves without somebody triggering that, right? isn't that what they are saying, stating the obvious? the question is how much does that go toward how they feel after mass shooting or what kind of weapon they have. when they hear a certain type of weapon was used or in the case of el paso, somebody didn't pass -- no, odessa, forgive me, someone did not pass a background check, but obtained a gun in a different way. is there a catch-all that we can do, can we get departments to talk to each other? just because somebody recognizes
9:23 am
the fact guns don't trigger themselves, humans do and issues may play a role or just hate or mental illness, whatever it is, doesn't mean they wouldn't be in favor of change. there is that human mechanism that says something horrible has happened and we want to see something happen and return we saw the president answer back to that, he said, look, to the nra, we want to do the right thing here. talk to the nra, pararkphrasing, do the right thing. what does that look like? he's sitting down with democrats and republicans. senators chris murphy and joe manchin had conversations with him, one lengthy one between toomey and the president. toomey told me he feels like they can get some place. this is a conversation going forward because the president agreed to sit down and abide in the manner. the question now is people put pressure on their politicians to get something done. i think that is the next step.
