the dark? is it to have plausible deniability? how about when he said i don't think i was qualified to be on the board and i didn't know anything about ukraine or natural gas but i probably knew more about that than the other people on the board. she could have asked, the former president of poland is on the board. international investors, former cia. i think you don't know more than they do about ukraine and natural gas. she never asked why did you hire a p.r. firm to smear the investigator probing burisma. she never asked why do you think you got the job? why do you think people were given this positions. >> dana: i think she did ask that. he confirmed what people have assumed when she asked, did you profit off the last name and he said yeah. >> jesse: the point is why are they giving the job to him.

what kind of influence are they buying with the job offer any couldn't answer it. >> dana: juan, your thoughts. >> juan: i thought -- dana and i and ari fleischer were talking about it, it's a strange day for him to come out and make it the news on the day of the big debate tonight. i guess it heightens the stakes in terms of how his dad handles it tonight. my sense is that hunter was contrite and he was pretty honest in saying you know what, got a lot of breaks because his last name is biden and he doesn't know the extent of the brakes and the money that's come his way because his last name is biden. he admits it created a negative perception even if it broke no laws. i think he was very contrite on that level. but by coming clean, jesse, it seems to me he creates pressure on the trump kids to come clean. because you have don jr., you have eric, ivanka, all have huge

multinational global business dealings going on while their dad is in the white house. i think last year the prophets were between 29 and $135 million. property is being sold. father has never divested himself of the trump company. we don't hear anything about it and they don't speak about it. it seems to me that's the ongoing. >> jesse: are you comparing hunter to john jr. and ivanka and eric? do you think they are at the same level? >> juan: are you kidding? this is corruption. >> jesse: do you think hunter biden is at the same professional and business level as the trump kids? >> juan: i see what you're saying in terms of expertise and knowledge, yes. >> jesse: i would disagree strongly. >> dana: hunter was fairly defensive in the interview but i think at some ways for good reason. he knows that his dad has been losing -- going down and most of the polls. elizabeth warren is considered the front runner. there's a lot of pressure on him

but he doesn't think he did anything wrong. >> emily: i thought his defensiveness was so palpable. he came across and entitled, frustrated, he felt attacked. i thought his statements were weak and ineffective for those reasons. he said he regrets the appearance, the perspective of something wrong. the only mistake was not taking into account rudy giuliani or a president scrutinizing him. if i can comment on what you were saying, juan. a tremendous difference as a citizen is how much the business dealings were intertwined with the state. i want to take this moment to point out how intertwined hunter biden's with the chinese state. his attorney, the other day and said he's stepping down as director of the board and he's received no profit from his stake. that's not true. what he invested in its 400,000 some change investment gave him control and influence over $1.5 billion in capital over

there. what does that fund that he's an owner of investing? really sensitive assets like the state owned in china nuclear power company and the u.s. that company has reported in their documents specifically that they lure investors who, because they are children of officials, to leverage the network and that he had a 30% stake the entire time. >> dana: as bret baier pointed out, you get the payout on your way out so when you're leaving. who knows. there are probably more questions about that. what did you think about his performance and maybe that of the media? >> greg: he is clearly no boy scouts despite being intens intense. >> jesse: very good. >> greg: struck me as someone who's lived a pretty fast life. i've seen that look before. when he said he did nothing wrong but in retrospect he shouldn't of done it, that's exactly what i say when my wife has cornered me on something. it's like yeah, i shouldn't have

had 15 wine coolers but it's not wrong. i shouldn't have thrown up at the bosses picnic. i did nothing wrong but i shouldn't of done it. the lesson is there is a downside to nepotism. you get the benefits, you get the benefits up front. jobs, first-class airfare, pick up chicks, all the stuff hunter biden has been doing. this was a karma-esque. is that a word? it's a new thing, a golden rule i think of the donald trump presidency. for every action, there is a powerful reaction. so eugene up a ukrainian phone call. we are going to gin up hunter. in terms of stories, they might be the same but if you're going to push this one, i'm going to do to you. this hunter story actually sticks because people rich kids who get away with stuff and that's different, to juan's point, then donald trump's kids

because they actually work for a living. do you think trump lets his kids slide at work? if you asked his kids, would it have been easier to work for a stranger than your dad, they would've said stranger. because their dad never rests. he would seem like a merciless boss, especially if you are related. >> dana: you wouldn't want to let them down. the ukrainian gas board, oh, well. >> greg: trump would tell donald, eric is doing really good. and then he would go to eric, donald is doing really good. >> jesse: donald trump just got into politics two years ago. his kids were very successful in the private sector for many, many years. if you look at the resume of hunter, i don't know if you've looked at it, juan, but every single step of joe's career, hunter was right behind him. out of law school, went to the big bank, joe's biggest contributor. then he went to the board of amtrak.

"the five," we were ripping each others throats out. >> juan: i'm saying forget what we say. it was the coverage of the trump rallies. i didn't think trump did that well in the debates but the rallies is what was great tv and everybody covered it as tv without understanding it has political consequence. to my mind, i have worked for several journalist organization organizations. if you wiretapped any of our morning editorial calls, you would hear stuff and say is that biased? is it not biased? there's no bias in the boss saying to you impeachment and

trump are the biggest story in american politics right now. i am with jesse. i don't see that there's anything news in this or evidence of bias. reporters, don't lose sight of the big story because that's what the audience wants to hear about. >> greg: emily, they make it a big story by saying that. we have to keep it going, keep the flame going. >> emily: they are creating their own fire. what struck me about the tapes was when the guy said they, the seated executives, they don't like tulsi gabbard because she takes an unconventional route with policy. that's exactly what comes out of the left and the democrats. they will never support free thinking. that was the saddest part, not that they're focusing on trump and impeachment but that they are ignoring everyone else that deserves attention. the final point, it kills me, may be because i travel so much, 323 million people are subjected to cnn in airports and i encourage every airport to let their contract lamps because people are getting tired of it.

"undermines values he's espoused, most disgraceful moment of career." protesters in hong kong burning his jersey. jesse, he says he's not talking about the substance, just the idea that the houston general managers tweet caused a controversy while you had nba teams over there in asia. how do you see it? >> jesse: the most disgraceful moment of his career was when he went to l.a. they miss the playoffs. there was a horrible year last year and then they traded away his whole team and we'll see how he does this year. he did damages brand a little bit. a lot of patriotic americans didn't like what he had to say and he can say whatever he wants but there's consequences to his freedom of speech too. i assume he was just trying to make sure that the league makes money and that his teammates makes money and that no one rocks the boat. that's what he's trying to do. he's kind of the ambassador for the nba. he is not a human rights advocate. but then to say that the guy in

talking about people in these authoritarian regimes who lose their job, lose their houses, put in jail as political prisoners. lebron didn't seem to pick up on it. >> greg: he lebron-splained. remember, when you tweet, it's in public. wow. i had no idea! people disagree. maybe you shouldn't tweet. do science. eat food or you might starve. breathe every now and then. it was also an idiotic comment because he was talking about restraint. he was a big advocate for colin kaepernick who wore socks depicting police officers as pigs so him telling us to be more thoughtful is a little strange. the bigger point is that celebrities are outspoken when there is no skin in the game. they will condemn religious bakers. or someone who doesn't want a gender-neutral bathroom. you get rewarded for that on

social media but when there is skin in the game and money to be made, a billion-dollar contract or fear of being called intolerant, there's a strange silence about imprisonment of gays or honor killings and families. your silent on baker's. >> juan: lebron james was the guy who wore the t-shirt into shootaround saying "i can't breathe" in support of what was going on here with black men and police but now saying he's not going to talk about the substance. he's thinking like a businessman. >> some people have said we understand if someone has direct knowledge of a domestic issue. a person of color speaking of their experience on race relations. by all means, you have credibility and may be an international situation if someone's not directly involved. maybe it's not as credible. there is that side to it.

it makes sense that daryl morey spoke up. the gm. if any team is the most entrenched in china, it's houston. i understand lebron's messaging. it was sloppy and horrible and there's a firestorm from it. he was basically saying wait a week. you're in japan. there are guys that are still in china. he was trying to say that i think, that i understand the censorship. they could knock on the door and hold our guys hostage because of how dictatorial china is. i see that element. i think as citizens and patriots, the one thing that we can export is liberty and freedom. the thought that someone would be either held hostage to their business interests in china or that we don't include that in the conversation with somebody that's as fundamental as liberty, it's an issue. the final point, i was part of
