let's bring in the former director of social justice for the bernie sanders campaign. his first debate after his heart attack, he looked healthy and sounded good. what did you think? >> everyone agrees it takes a lot for someone to come back from a heart attack and show up at a debate with the same energy he always had. i saw him a little more reserved which i think is good. in order to look at his health, he is taking care of himself and his family but he made a comeback tonight. heather: let's get to your top three winners from last night, buttigieg, warren and sanders. >> mayor pete did a good job. i don't know if it will make a difference in the polls. he gets on the microphone, for some reason he can't break in the polls, can't seem to get the numbers he needs to compete but

opportunities to go 1-on-1 with different candidates on issues like medicare and gun rights and he went back and forth with tulsi gabbard when it came to foreign policy and our troops in syria. >> is a veteran that was a highlight of my night even though there were opposite opinions. it was good to see two veterans put on the uniform to talk about what it means to them. that was a shining star to anyone even if they disagree on policies. heather: your top 3 loses, o'rourke, stier, and booker. >> o'rourke because he started out again -- just bounced back, strong on gun violence, still missing a lot of substance when it comes to the other candidates.

tom stier, i feel sorry for tom, he spent a lot of money going against donald trump and did not shine tonight. he had one opportunity to make his name known. i don't know if it will be in his favor. cory booker disappointed me. i have been rooting for him not because i think he had a chance but because i like his, justice policy but today it was like leading girl scout troops. heather: completely different cory booker, he is calling for peace and don't talk negatively about each other, one of them being biden. you think warren is the front runner, the one to beat, the number one person everybody went back and forth on last night. biden nowhere on your list. >> the establishment pushed him all the way. that is known. not saying that to be negative, that is just the reality. joe biden, an opportunity to get the nomination in south carolina because of the african-american

vote but i don't know if he will compete all the way through. warren is the front runner, the polls show it. bernie sanders's health is fair game. no one is picking on him, just the reality of it. it puts are in good position but mayor pete will come back but one thing for sure about cory booker going from spartacus to spongebob squarepants, really disappointing. heather: china, immigration, climate change, do they focus too much on donald trump? >> they need to focus on their opponent but there are other issues that matter. small business, democrats support small business like the plague and community policing as well. there's a lot of stuff they didn't focus on because it was more about tell us about this mean friend, that was a wasted question and i blame the moderators for that.

in terms of foreign policy, syria specifically did you hear anything that will make a difference? >> i didn't hear anything, just slamming trump. the whole thing was hard to watch, not just from a personal perspective but security perspective because no one had any solutions. no one seemed to recall the reason isis had escalated to the level it did the last several years before trump squashed them in syria. the reason was obama and biden prematurely pulled out of iraq, created a monster vacuum that allowed isis to spill over into syria. don't get me started on iran, the worst deal in history of counterterrorism. you can't fit with a group of islamic fundamental clerics who run the country and expect to make a deal with them and not get into it with a terror group at some point.

staffer brad blakeman and jason nichols will join us process for analysis from trump 2020 campaign pollster jim mclaughlin but we begin with pete hegseth in ohio. good to see you. what was your biggest take away from last night's debate? >> my biggest take away was sometimes it becomes crystal clear who the real front runner is and in this case all the guns were metaphorically trained on elizabeth warren. there were moments joe biden was almost invisible on stage and the debate over her medicare for all plan, elizabeth warren's unwillingness to acknowledge she would have to raise taxes was an awkward moment, she stuck to her talking point over and over again, joe biden, the hunter biden thing loomed large, this is the sixth debate. it changed a little bit.

in contours like impeachment which is never-ending, hunter biden, his health so the big issues, driving who people like as a candidate as opposed to what they say or don't say on tv. shannon: my one thought with you given your experience as a veteran and what you saw about the responses to syria and foreign-policy in general. >> they were all over the map on the solution, what should be done and who we should stand by which is indicative of the bad options but what is tough is to stand by the track record of foreign-policy, whether it pertains to isis, iraq, the iran deal, things the obama administration was party to that did not make us more secure. this was indicative of a region in the world with no good solutions and no easy answers. they want to protect the kurds but don't want to keep troops there. they want to stand with israel

but not do what is necessary for iran. tulsi gabbard and pete buttigieg went back and forth with two perspectives. no clear winner on foreign-policy. heather: the debate between the two with different viewpoints but factually based and substance finally. thank you, appreciate it. let's bring in brad blakeman and jason nichols, democratic strategists to talk about this specifically, impeachment and how the debate began on impeachment. they talked about it for 18, 20 minutes but the question itself was whether impeachment is distracting the democrats. i want your responses. >> impeachment is the way we establish this man will not be permitted to break the law over and over. >> the house will find him guilty, worthy of impeachment. >> he will not cooperate in any

way at all, they have no choice but to move. heather: all this at the same time nancy pelosi announced she is not going to officially move in that direction. >> inmates are running the asylum with the democrats, lost all hope of being a leader on this, all over the map. he has been conciliatory to adam schiff and others, 6 committees have jurisdiction, not one single committee breaking the rules of past impeachment process by making it up as they go along, crying about transparency and hiding witnesses and not releasing testimony, this isn't the way to proceed at the american people will see through this. heather: nancy pelosi says no impeachment vote but spend the whole first part of the debate talking about it. >> it is an important topic that is still on the table and if you want to talk about what is

mclaughlin, we appreciate it. we were discussing a lot of time spent on impeachment and hating donald trump, not a lot of time on the issues. >> no question about it. it puts the democrats in a tough place right now. a survey recently, two thirds of americans don't want congress to focus on impeachment, they want them to focus on the real issues affecting people like national security, the economy and healthcare and that is not where democrats are. i was shocked that is where they spent the debate was so much on an issue that quite frankly the american public doesn't agree with them on. heather: not one question about immigration. that is the number one issue in the latest poll we have in terms of important issues facing the country at 13%. donald trump, they spent a lot of time talking about him at 8% and the economy coming in at 7% but immigration, gun violence and healthcare. >> in the battleground states, it goes up among independent voters and congress has been ineffective and most americans agree with donald trump when it

comes to immigration especially keeping borders secure. >> maybe they didn't talk about it because some of what he is doing is successful and the number of people crossing the border illegally has dropped. >> what democrats were afraid of basically all the democrats came out for open borders and taxpayer funding for illegals and also came out for other extreme things like more welfare for illegals and you are seeing the powers that be work with debate moderators to keep them away from these subjects they know are not popular with middle america. heather: they went back and forth about healthcare, targeting elizabeth warren who never answered how she's going to pay for her plan.

>> at one point joe biden said it would cost the average middle-class family $5000-$10,000 a year in new taxes to pay for the plan. i didn't see a lot of talk about that and you saw a fight. the best messages we are seeing against medicare for all are coming from the other democrats, not going to see your doctor and take away your private health insurance. heather: they were crystal-clear explaining to people at home, who is the next to dropout? >> a lot of them should. heather: three our debate. >> several of them should but they are going to hang on as long as they can because a lot of them, they know they are not running for president but running for vice president at this point. it is tough with 12 people up there. there are legitimate candidates that were not on stage at all.
