jillian: good thursday morning. you are watching "fox and friends first". rob: thanks for getting up early with us. jillian: breaking right now maryland congressman at house oversight chairman elijah cummings has died. rob: aishah hasnie joins us with more of what we know. >> reporter: cummings representatives tell us he passed away at johns hopkins hospital after complications from long-standing health problems. he died just before 3:00 this morning. cummings served as chairman of the committee on oversight and reform as the main investigative committee in the house of representatives. he obtained his bachelor's degree in political science from howard university and graduated from the university of maryland school of law. he has been out of congress for at least a month. he was supposed to return to his office this week. a statement from his office

democrats keep thinking they can win in texas but this is a state that is thriving because of donald trump. look what the tax cuts and job act has done, 628 new economic opportunities, the ability for investment, economic opportunity and job growth, a direct result of donald trump's policies, democrats don't have anything to stand on. jillian: the top issues facing voters in texas and you will see at the top, healthcare, 22% followed by climate change, the economy and gun policy and race relations. i want to focus on those. gun policy has been a big talker as of late because of beto o'rourke and what he said the couple weeks ago about wanting to confiscate mandatory assault weapons buybacks and look at race relations and community relations with police officers the last few months. in the news the last week we talked about atatiana jefferson who was shot in her own home by

a police officer. how do you think those topics will rise? do you think they will? >> when it comes to what is important to texans we should talk about the most important thing, healthcare. there are 14 million texans who will lose their health insurance as they have it. jillian: the things that have been in the news as of late, and been emotional for residents of texas. >> what democrats like robert o'rourke are talking about is overturning the second amendment of the constitution of the united states and forcing texans to hand over their rightfully owned firearms to the government. that is not how the second amendment works, that is not how the constitution works in this country, donald trump is an ardent supporter of the second amendment and safe and lawful use and exercise of that amendment.

jillian: maryland congressman elijah cummings has died. rob: aishah hasnie joins us with more. >> stunning and said news out of washington dc overnight. we got a statement from chairman cummings's office, giving us more information. at approximately 2:45 2:405 am on thursday, october 17, 2019, congressman elijah cummings passed away at johns hopkins hospital due to complications concerning long-standing health challenges. more details will be forthcoming. cummings served as chairman of the committee on oversight and reform. he obtained his bachelor's degree in political science from howard university and graduated

from the university of maryland school of law. he has been out of congress at least a month now after some type of medical procedure. he was actually supposed to return to his office earlier this week but did not. he has been representing the seventh congressional districts and 1996. he began his career of public service in the maryland house of delegates where he served for 14 years. cummings was one of the key figures in the impeachment inquiry into donald trump. recently the two feuded over donald trump's criticism of baltimore. cummings has had health issues in recent years, uses a wheelchair to get around and when he stands he braces himself with a walker. long-term medical conditions here. he leaves behind a wife and three children. chairman cummings was 68 years old. jillian: thank you very much. rob: the reform and oversight committee is very busy. we will see who takes over the

committee working on the impeachment inquiry. jillian: and a little more on those health issues from the baltimore sun. in 2017 they say he had an aortic valve replacement and after that had an infection so he was in the hospital longer than expected after that procedure and after that a short time later he was in the hospital for a knee infection. he missed a significant amount of time he has not participated in a roll call vote since september 11th, a committee hearing on september 19th and on september 3rd the house oversight and reform committee, said in a statement his return was anticipated but that is not happened. we do not know any more about this medical procedure he is reported to have had but when we get more information we will you know. rob: born in 1951, raised in baltimore, for 23 years. elijah cummings dead at 63 years old. we are going to talk a little

didn't ask one question on this issue. they also did not ask questions about other critical issues like housing, climate change and china. it seemed the first two hours of the debate were all about donald trump. even when the questions didn't mention donald trump the candidates usually came up with answers that didn't many came up with answers that said they wanted to impeach the president. a great example of that is when joe biden was asked about his son's business dealings in ukraine and instead of addressing the issue and apparent conflict of interest he answered the question by saying he wants to remove trump from office. jillian: a lot of people expected there would be questions about donald trump. that's not a surprise but a lot of americans feel with these debates this is how they get a sense of candidates on issues we as americans care about, the people who are voting care about. two separate tweets, julian castro slamming the question saying 3 hours and no questions about climate, housing or immigration, goes on to say climate change is an essential

threat, america has a housing crisis in children are in cages at the border. kamala harris says not one question about the climate crisis, not one question about lgbt q rights, not one question about immigration, these issues are too important to ignore. the candidates want to talk about these questions and the american people want to hear what they have to say about these questions. >> reporter: it is hard to take these debates seriously when the moderators treat them as nonserious events. they asked the question about ellen, a talkshow host but not one question about china's communist regime and the president's domination over corporate america. the candidates themselves were criticizing the debate questions. it is easy to see why the debate brought record low ratings for cnn. this is another example of why so many americans are losing trust in cnn and other

investigation into the death of tyler skaggs. rob: the program faces potential fines. >> reporter: joe maddon who won a world series in 2016 walking into an angels clubhouse filled with sadness, a public relations employee for the team told the feds he supplied oxycodone to tyler skaggs, abused it for years. he died in july. and autopsy showing fentanyl, oxycodone and alcohol in the system. according to eric k, the angels director of communication, they worked out an arrangement in which k would obtain drugs for skaggs if skaggs would pay for them. he says two team officials were well aware of his drug use long before his death. k issuing a statement, quote, i felt and continue to feel it is time for everyone to stand up and take responsibility for their respective roles in this.
