rob: from upstate new york you are watching "fox and friends first" on wednesday morning. carley: thanks for starting the day with us and we start with a fox news alert. a massive manhunt underway after a deadly shooting at a halloween park in california, two people are dead, nine others hurt. rob: long beach police say one person opened fire inside the home. they have not said how many suspects they are looking for details on a motive. we will keep you posted. the texas police officer who was shot in the leg has been identified. urbanoh rodriguez is a 5 year veteran of the force. the denton police chief holding back tears as the officer remains in critical condition. >> talk about someone coming

into this profession, urban exemplifies that. shannon: the drivers charged with attempted murder. er arrest. meantime house intel committee chair adam schiff accused of blocking and impeachment witness from answering questions from republicans as democrats outline their plan to formalize the impeachment process. rob: griff jenkins has reaction on capitol hill. >> reporter: house republicans are furious blasting the testimony from alexander vindman accusing adam schiff of shutting down questions and conducting unfair hearings behind closed doors. >> adam schiff trying to run a 1-sided soviet style process we have never seen before. this is an like benghazi or anything. this is an impeachment inquiry.

rob: breaking down the numbers, thanks for coming on. one of the findings here, tax increases we put on the screen, on high earners, corporations and the financial sector by themselves could not cover much more than one third of the cost of medicare for all. let that sink in and tell us what that means. >> file this under fairytales. we would need a wealth tax, raise the payroll tax. there is not enough taxes in the world to fund this program. i'm not going to defend today's program. we know it is a mess. fund a program that will cover 10% of people, today's program covers 90% of people and most of us benefit from employer-provided insurance. wi-fi to reinvent the wheel? i'm not sure. carley: the federal government would have to cut nonhealth funding spending by 80% if they didn't want to raise taxes, say goodbye to the military, nobody is suggesting that but it does prove how expensive medicare for all would be.

how will elizabeth warren or bernie sanders be able to defend this if they go up against donald trump in 2020? >> it is hard and people are noticing my elizabeth warren and bernie sanders won't talk the math because it is too difficult to fund this. you would have to double the federal budget. healthcare is 18% of the us economy. if we handed that to the federal government you are talking loss of millions of jobs. >> we can say that lightly, doubling the federal government. bernie said i don't want to talk about this. what is worn going to say? she says she has a plan. >> warren helps whole plan is i have a plan. she's not going to break down the math. at the end people will have to pay more. the whole purpose of medicare

>> these are numbers now immigration system in the world can handle, not even in this country. the crisis isn't over. the bottom line for us is congress needs to pass meaningful legislation. jillian: the president of the national border patrol council, you just heard the numbers, 800,000 compared to 400,000 in 2018 but it is also still being considered a crisis. what needs to be done now to listen this issue? >> we have to look at the root cause. what is causing people to cross the border illegally and how are criminal cartels getting so many drugs across the borders and unless we address that cause we will continue in this crisis mode.

create in our coverage. i will circle back to congress. of congress does not consider their state, tennessee, kentucky, ohio, if you don't consider your state a border state you will continue to have opioids coming into suburban area -- america and children will continue to suffer. what we have to look at is as we look at texas and the vulnerabilities we face in texas we have to shut that down to protect our suburbs in states that are far from the border but if you don't consider your state a border state they are not going to get behind us and not going to do what they need to do to shutdown the southwest border to make our country safer. >> donald trump a lot of emphasis on this issue and done a lot to curb the number of migrants coming in and crossing the border illegally, one of the things he accomplished was get mexico to help out.

has that substantially decreased the number of people we have seen? i am assuming this number, 850,000, has a lot to do with the peak amount of migrants across the border over the summer? >> pretty sad we are relying on other countries to do our job for us but donald trump was able to strike a deal with mexico that any of his professors would have loved to had but didn't have the political will to get it done. because he was able to strike that deal, we have seen a vast reduction in the number of people crossing the border but we have to do more on our end. we have to address this as our problem and not expect other countries to fix it. there's a lot more that donald trump is doing with his executive authorities but we still have to get congress to fund this. you and i both know why we are not doing it. the democrats do not want to give donald trump a win going into 2020. they want to continue to stymie everything he is trying to accomplish so they hope they can

you talked to a lot of young people across college campuses. do these numbers surprise you? >> reporter: they don't. i have seen this shift, talking to thousands of young voters in the last 31/2 years. i have seen this shift take place where so many times even a few years ago, only a few crazy people believe that. as we embrace america, more social policies, college, free medicare, people looking around saying socialism is just compassionate. we are helping poor people, giving them free things. more government regulations, less freedom. when people are ignorant to history of what socialism and communism have done in the past they are ignorant and how it would be applied in america. you know how young people take part in social justice advocation.

and the failed messaging battle of free-market, a winning message on the left that socialism will be compassionate. rob: do you think these opinions will change once a lot of these students enter the real world? they have been in high school, now they are in college once they get out and start working will be change? >> reporter: it could lead to a change once they get first paycheck and realize maybe i am not greedy to keep my money. the idea of capitalism is you are just greedy if you want to keep your money when the reality is what is more greedy than looking at someone and saying we want that money because we decide what to do with it, that is real greed. the real aspect of the rise in communism and socialism is the great recession. so many young people came of age, saw their parents struggling in the recession and

blame that as a failure on capitalism when it was a failure because of cronyism and government intervention and they say that was the fault of capitalism so i will run the opposite side and the dirty taste of coming-of-age during the economic recession led them to think socialism and communism i the answer. >> they be rated trump is more dangerous to world peace than even kim jong un who has killed people. you say this is a failure on conservatives for not pushing back. >> it is easy to -- as a conservative activist to say here are the problems with the left's economics and socialism and communism but if we are not doing enough to say here are the solutions we will never win the next generation over so it is important to remind people that the benefits of capitalism, billion people in the last century were brought out of poverty because of that freedom. when you go to starbucks and pull an iphone out of your pocket those are innovations young people love that never would have come here if it

carley: this is a game changer. the ncaa will allow student-athletes to profit off of their name, image and likeness. rob: one politician eyeing that money for tax purposes. todd pyro in studio with more on the landmark decision. >> reporter: with this decision the ncaa changing its decades long practice, student-athletes, the same opportunity to make money as all other students.

as a national governing body the ncaa is uniquely positioned to modify it is to ensure fairness and a level playing field for student-athletes. the board's action today and yesterday creates a path to enhance opportunities for student-athletes while ensuring they compete against students at not professionals. the move comes after well-publicized pressure including from california which passed a law prohibiting schools in that state from punishing their athletes or accepting endorsement money. other states followed suit, they debated bills to allow student-athletes to earn money as well. the states are on your screen but with news of this announcement came this was a plan by north carolina senator richard bird, attacked scholarships for college athletes. and they make money off their likeness, scholarships should be treated like income. i will be introducing legislation for scholarships given to athletes who choose to
