up to the home and opened fire, hitting 10 people. the six surviving victims are expected to recover. investigators now looking for surveillance video and any other evidence. it's unclear if the shooting is related to another deadly shooting in fresno earlier in the day and we'll continue to follow those breaking developments for you. supporters rallied for death row inmate rodney reed's release overnight after a texas appeals court halts his execution. >> free rodney reed! free rodney reed! heather: an appeals court sparing reed's life on friday, five days before his scheduled execution. the court is calling for his case to be re-examined. he was sentenced to death in the 1996 murder of stacy stietz he

claims her fiance was responsible for her murder. today the man accused of murdering 17 people at marjory stoneman douglas high school is due back in court. a pretrial hearing is scheduled for nikolas cruz. his lawyers filed a series of motions in hopes of preventing prosecutors from seeking the death penalty. the trial is set to begin in january. nancy pelosi and chuck schumer calling on president trump to testify ahead of this week's impeachment hearings. griff jenkins joins us from washington as the president warns democrats of using impeachment as a political weapon. maybe a little late for that, griff? >> reporter: we'll see, heather. good morning. a second week of impeachment hearings set to begin tomorrow. the president spent much of yesterday in a twitter fewery. for example, this one, the democrats are returning

impeachment into a routine partisan weapon that is very bad for the country. he attacked jennifer williams, who was on the july 25th phone call and testified over the weekend that she recalled the word barisma being mentioned on that call. she will be heard from tomorrow, followed by a ukraine security expert and tim volcker and tim nancy pelosi is inviting the president to testify. >> the president could come right before the committee and speak all the truth that he wants if he wants to. >> you don't expect him to do that. >> he could do it in writing. he has every town present his case. >> reporter: then on wednesday we'll hear from one witness that both sides think could have an impact, ambassador gordon sondland whos is believed to have multiple interactions with president trump concerning ukraine.

>> the bloody siege continues in hong kong between protesters and police, some of the worst violence that we have seen in the five months we've been tracking this situation in hong kong. hundreds of militant protesters and students holed up in one of the city's universities. police are threatening to charge in if the activists don't give themselves up. young people say they'll fight to the finish. it has been nasty on both sides. police are using tear gas,ser, rubber bullets and live ammunition. protesters striking back with rocks, gas bombs and bows and arrows. 38 people were injured last night. dozens have been arrested over the past several hours. all of this part of a lengthy protest movement aimed at getting more democracy for the chinese territory. china this morning saying no one should underestimate its will to protect the sovereignty of hong

kong. state department late sunday condemning the unjustified use of force on both sides. heather, important local elections in hong kong were planned for this coming sunday. it was thought that maybe it could be a move towards some degree of democracy in hong kong. now some are saying it's not going to happen at all. back to you. heather: greg palkot live for us. thank you. great to have you with us this morning. sticking overseas for a moment, new photos show kim jong un overseeing north korea's military drills. these pictures were just released just hours after president trump called for progress on denuclearization. the president tweeting, quote, i am the only one who can get you where you have to be. you should act quickly. get the deal done. the u.s. announced it would suspend joint drills with south korea to help restart talks which have been stalled for months. and massive flooding at historic sites in italy. venice now hit with its third

have fiona hill at the end of this week and she's a former trump russia adviser. but as i said, at least a couple of these people do have firsthand knowledge of the actual phone call. >> yeah, well, we the american people also have firsthand knowledge because we can see the best evidence, we can see the transcript of the phone call, that there's nothing there. great, we can all observe the sky is blue. fantastic. doesn't mean there's anything legally impeach aable abouable . what these witnesses are bringing forward is there opinion of the policy of president trump. james madison specifically said that mal administration or the policy differences or the ability of the be president to actually execute his office well is not actually an impeachable offense. just because these people may disagree with how president trump uses his power in office,

that doesn't mean he did anything criminal or wrong. heather: president trump does disagree with the democrats. here's what he tweeted, slamming the hearings. he said the crazed do nothing democrats are turning impeachment into a routine partisan weapon that is bad for the country and not what the founders had in mind. so basically exactly what you were just saying. >> absolutely. and i completely agree with the president, that this is not what the founders had in mind. they didn't intend for the house to use impeachment as a weaponized political partisan idea. what they invested in, the ability to impeach and remove, was as a safeguard if a sitting president would conduct himself with conduct that rises to the level of treason, bribery or other high crimes of misdemeanors. executing policy and enacting his office in a way that he absolutely can is not a reason to go after him. this is a political t partisan witch hunt, something that does

heather: welcome back to "fox & friends first." as former new york mayor michael bloomberg's presidential campaign ramps up, he's apologizing for his controversial stop and frisk policy. listen. >> i was totally focused on saving lives but as we know, good intentions aren't good enough. i want you to know that i realize back then i was wrong and i'm sorry. heather: carley shimkus with fox news headlines 24/7, seem 115 with -- sirius xm115 with the backlash he's getting. >> stop and frisk was one of his signature policies during his time as mayor. it lets police officers stop and search anyone they think may have committed a crime.

critics called it racist. supporters said it was smart policing. since his time as mayor he largely supported it up until now when he's considering running for president. some people are calling the apology disingenuous. one twitter user says kind of tough to gain momentum running for president when the first thing you do is apologize. and john on twitter says guessing they had another focus group determine stop and frisk wasn't a good pr term. now it will be pardon me and hug. is it better for him politically to come out and apologize because he'll need support from the black community or continue to support the policy that he championed for so many years? heather: it's interesting because then it plays into what everyone thinks about politicians anyway, that they just kind of tell people what they want to hear and what will get them the most votes. there's a twitter feud thatter t erupted between the new york times and fed ex about not

paying taxes. >> this happened after the new york times reported that fed ex cut its tax bill down to zero. so on sunday they wrote, in the 2017 fiscal year fed ex owed more than $1.5 billion in taxes. the next year it owed nothing. what changed was the trump administration's tax cut for which the company had lobbied hard. well, fed ex ceo fred smith replied with an interesting challenge, saying the new york times paid zero federal income tax in 2017 on earnings of $111 million and only $30 million in 2018, 18% of their pretax book income. i here by challenge the publisher of the new york times and the business section editor to a public debate in washington, d.c. with me and the fed ex corporate vice president of tax. expect to hear more about this. politicians are weighing in including bernie sanders who said we're told we can't afford to invest in the housing, health

actually up 4 and then klobuchar and the rest follow. so i will begin with you, omari. what do you think about this? >> goo good morning again. what i think is quite simple, as we'll see, there will be maybe i think 10 to 15 more lead change as we go ahead. it clearly shows that the democrat party does not have a true pulse on who they want their next leader to be. but we can see that whomever that leader is, that person is going to have to go further and further to the left. that's what we're seeing here in virginia as well. we're seeing politicians that are going r far to the left and when you look at them from a total career perspective, you really don't know who they are anymore. so it just represents a party that's really in shambles right now and unable to find out who they want to lead them going forward. heather: kelly, since omari was talking about maybe this is a trend that shows some of the democrats are leaning far too left, let's take a look at buttigieg, some of his policies. his platform so far.

i'll get your opinion on this. he supports a form of medicare for all. he opposes eliminating private insurance, supports the green new deal, supports a wealth tax, legalizing marijuana, supports assault weapons bans. so is that a move to the center? >> good morning. thank you so much for having me on the show. i really appreciate it. i believe that he is a centrist and much more of a moderate and that's why i believe that he is increasing in the polls and he has a lot of support of the iowa viewers and ultimately i think it shows more of a centrist agenda rather than a liberal agenda. heather: omari, when you take a look at that list, his platform, do you think that is a trend towards the middle? >> absolutely not. i think it's, again, like i said before, i think it's just a trend that's going further and further to the left. even as early as this week,

does either stand a chance? >> yeah, i believe absolutely, both of them stand a chance, definitely. bloomberg has a great record in new york and the governor as well. and i would say again that both of them are centralists and moderate politicians and i think that they have a definitely good chance but ultimately it will be up to the voters to make a determination on who they want as a democratic candidate in 2020. heather: what about their strategy, omari? final word. >> i think right there, when you talk about taking away a person's right to bear arms, when you talk about more government control, when you talk about a government takeover, those now have become centrist views for democrat these days and it's just too far right, it's too radical. what we need is someone to stand behind our president, to continue to move our country forward and make sure we're focused on jobs, making sure we're focused on workforce development and that's what the president has been doing and that's what i will do here in virginia once i'm --

good morning. >> reporter: the 'the mustang was unveiled last night in los angeles, the 2021 model. this is the first time we're seeing the mustang name as we know it on something other than that traditional vehicle. it is an electric suv. this is the first of an $11 billion project that ford is rolling out to unveil about 40 new hybrid and electric vehicles by 2022. this new electric vehicle, it will compete with the tesla model y suv. that is going to be coming out very soon. this is something that a lot of people are looking forward to. this model will go at least 210 to 300 miles on an electric charge, according to ford. it is going to cost you quite a bit, starting price is about $44,000 for the base model. all the way up to $60,000 for the gt model. you'll start seeing these in the dealerships in late 2020 and

bakr al-baghdadi, and then just four minutes and six seconds of the president's handling of the economy. what's going on? >> well, the president has a very strong economy to run on. the economists, most of the profession are progressives, liberals and so forth and their estimates and criticisms are terribly biased. i could give you very specific examples. in reality, we beat all those expectations. the economy is simply doing better than the forecasters said. and the stock market shows it. the stock market is up because corporate profits, growth, jobs creation, and the plight of the people at the bottom is improving so much. finally people at the bottom are getting higher wages. we can thank the trump economy for that. if you were a democrat, would you want to talk about impeachment or would you want to talk about the trump economy? it's basically distracting people. heather: i want to ask, is the mainstream media doing a disservice to the public by not

talking about how good the economy is? >> absolutely. our job is to inform and up at msnbc, three floors above me, they don't inform anybody. all they do is rant. what are they displaying? you have disgrunted people from the republican middle a that was defeated in 2016, who sought to undermine the president so he sent rudy over there to execute his foreign policy. it was like henry kissinger who is a hero in american history, running foreign policy out of the white house for nixon because the state department simply wouldn't do what he wanted them to do. heather: i want to ask about this, because you did bring up potential 2020 democratic candidates. across the board, any of those candidates, can you see them even being able to compete at all when it comes to the economy? >> yeah, i do. the mainstream media has sold the idea that billionaires are responsible for inequality. not that the outcome but they're

responsible. liz warren running against them, it's making up a villain, pick an individual you can point at and create yourself as a hero that will solve the problems. the policies she's proposed has been tried in european country after european country a after european country and they've all failed. to middle class people in the suburbs, i mean, how much do they know about french economic history and the failures? she'll say, look, over in europe she has free health care. she didn't tell them if the billionaire tax fails, they have a 15 to 18% national sales tax they'll have to pay and we will have to pay to finance that thing. one way or another, there is no free lun of, but right now they're offering folks something for nothing. heather: across the board. peter mauricey, joining us live this morning, we always enjoy having you with us. thank you. >> always nice to be with you. heather: 8 minutes until the top of the hour.
