foreign relations committee, thanks for joining us, let's get into this quote from lindsey graham who says horowitz will deliver a detailed report of what he found regarding his investigation along with recommendations as to how to make our judicial and investigative system better. the question is no one knows what this is going to say but you think years from now we look back at this as a defining moment? >> it could be. one of the key questions at play in the doj investigation is what the fbi and justice department knew about the steel dossier before it came out and before they gave it to the court. there has been a lot of debate about that and what the inspector general says about that and the recommendation about how to fix that process going forward if there are problems with the process. rob: you think this could have

an impact on and impeachment probe and i want you to explain how. i don't see what that has to do with a phone call to your friends. >> reporter: one of the claims the president made is this entire investigation of the president and his campaign, turned into the ukraine investigation after the russia investigation got completed is all about a political process and the entire thing is infected with this dossier and alleged misrepresentations about carter page and the like. if it comes out that there were issues in the investigation it plays into the narrative the president laid out about a political investigation. it cost concern in the senate about politics and politicization. jillian: what do you make of the timing of this? >> the timing is something house democrats can't control. the inspector general will do his report. it has been going on since 2018. chairman graham wants to get it

out as soon as possible because of the potential on the impeachment investigation. the timing has nothing to do with the investigation. chairman graham's timing is important to him. rob: the democrats in the house want to investigate whether the president lied to robert mueller in the written statement and the questions, some things came out in the roger stone thing, he was found guilty, that might implicate the president, maybe the president knew about the dnc hack. what do you make of that? >> nancy pelosi indicated she wants to keep the impeachment focused on ukraine. expanding beyond that, whether the president wasn't fully truthful, his lawyers working on those written answers. it is unlikely the president wants to get the trouble there but this is about getting at the grand jury material they wanted out of the grand jury

investigation that the ag refused to give them. jillian: the president sent a tweet saying she said i can do it in writing even though i did nothing wrong and don't like giving credibility to this now due process hoax. i like the idea and will to get congress focused again strongly consider it. what do you think of the president's tweet? >> the president mentioned earlier he might meet with the mueller investigators and give a deposition in person. he did it in writing. lawyers will give the same advice going forward. given what we know about the impeachment process going forward it looks like the president is not -- based on what we know now. for him to testify creates more exposure than it benefits him but the president has his own mind on these issues and may very well want to make his case to the american public directly and if he chooses to do so it could change the game

using the quantitative statistics on stopping people and there is no correlation between stop and frisk and reduction in crime. rob: you don't think stop and frisk was part of the reduction of crime? >> know. it was more targeted enforcement which was focused on where the crime patterns were occurring in new york city and holding police commanders accountable. it was not about stop and frisk. rob: the police association, mayor bloomberg could have saved himself his apology if you listen to police officers on the street that quota griffin and process is diluted the relationship between cops and the communities. the misguided policy inspired an anti-police movement targeting hatred and violence. the apology is too little too late. a lot of people argue the deterrent of knowing a cop could stop anybody carrying a gun at any time kept people from carrying weapons on the street. if you get caught with an illegal gun on the street you go to jail. >> that is true to a certain point but when you look at stops in comparison to arrests. i want to see upwards of 90% of all of them proved to be nothing. we didn't have anything.

to go out and say how oppressive the government is shows how wonderful our country is in the first place that you can criticize our government without having to have any fear of retribution. and how oppressive having to say the pledge is you are blinded by your own privilege and they don't see their own privilege in that statement, they don't see the american privilege, the fact that globally it is not a common thing to be able to criticize your own government and that is a beautiful thing we have in america. no one is saying you should be forced to say the pledge. mandatory patriotism is not patriotic at all but you should be up to take at least a few seconds out of the day to look back and realize how special the country is and inclusivity of our country, freedom to all people. jillian: to talk to students there are a lot of patriots on college campuses that include dorian thompson, college republican defending the pledge.

the other aspect of this is president obama. so many people came of age under his presidency and regardless of your opinions on him when you see him going around the world saying american exceptionalism is not a thing, every country think they are exceptional, and apologize to other countries on behalf, that sets the groundwork, maybe we don't need that intense patriotism we had in the past and that can lead to this as well. rob: nobody said the united states is perfect and critics don't leave either. here's grand valley state university on students banning the pledge, student senators are working together to provide compromise that will show respect for differences on the senate but one that is acceptable to those who value reciting the pledge, does that sound fair to you? >> giving students the opportunity is the key here. removing it altogether is the wrong move, if students do feel they shouldn't have it just don't stand up but removing everyone's right to have the opportunity to say it is a problem in this stems from broader conversations about how students are always looking for things that are oppressing them.
