deputy in a neighboring county. police say johnson shot williams after the sheriff told him to turn down his music, williams was a marine veteran and served as sheriff for nearly a decade. a trial date is now set for guards accused of failing to monitor jeffrey epstein was michael thomas and tobin noel admit they did not check epstein as often as they should have alleged allegedly made time logs to make it look like they did. the defenses the guards are scapegoats and claim outside circumstances are impacting it. he was found hanging in his jail cell in august. the trial is scheduled to begin on april 20th. new overnight, a navy spokesman revealing navy seal eddie gallagher will retire from active-duty and will not take part in a review board over his conduct while deployed in 2017.

but at the same time there are some problems in south bend that you can speak to specifically, correct? >> sure, there are definitely some issues here in south bend. there are some good things going on in our see. downtown is coming again, people moving back into town and pete get some of the credit for that, some of it, not all of it. as you mentioned in your lead in our violent crime has continued to soar even while the national rate of dropped. our rates per capita, a city nearby, chicago if not exceeding those and one of our most violent summers on record where we doubled last year's number of shooting so there are definitely some challenges facing our city. i don't fear for my safety or my family's safety on a daily basis. this is a problem largely based around gaining and group violent so if you are not involved in those collectivities were less

likely to come into contact with that violent crime and it is something that disproportionately affects minorities as well. shannon: let's bring in these numbers so people can visually see what you just mentioned. the south bend crime rate is higher than chicago. almost double. the incident in south bend, 1064 in chicago, 563 and you mentioned the homicides that were doubled in the last year and on top of that the poverty rate which is at 24.5% in south bend and south bend in terms of evidence is a population of 100,000. >> roughly 100,000, a little over. we suffered a blow in the early 1960s with the loss of studebaker, a manufacturer, we lost 20%-30% of our population at that time and haven't seem to recover a lot of that

population, a slight uptick right now but nothing like a population growth we sign the heyday. heather: what should people take away from this? mayor pete is spending a lot of time away from south bend and not there on the ground doing work a mayor needs to do because he's running for president right now. what should voters think of in terms of the issues happening in south bend when he is saying he can make america better? >> let me point out mayor pete and i have had a cordial, productive relationship during my time on counsel and we get along on a personal level. i have gone out of my way to be kind to him in the national media and so i'm not going to engage in any kind of character assassination here but we have some issues in south bend that haven't gotten better under his administration and have gotten worse. we have infrastructure crumbling
