friends first" on wednesday morning. thank you for joining us and we begin with a fox news alert. a police detective and three bystanders are dead after an hours long shootout in new jersey. officials believe kosher deli was targeted. brian has been on the scene and live in jersey city as we learn more about the officer who was killed trying to save lives. >> police officer killed in yesterday's gunbattle has been identified as joseph steele. he was on the force since 2006, married father of 5, officials say he was known as being exceptional at making sure guns are taken off the streets. seals was in plainclothes when shot and killed by one or both of the active shooters at a

process and realized last night investigators said this investigation would take months and had knowing cling what the motive was but the mayor of jersey city sent the following tweet, based on the initial investigation we believe the active shooters targeted the location they attack due to excessive caution the community may see additional police resources, we have no indication of any further threats. we are seeking clarification by what the jersey city's mayor meant by targeted. investigators nave no indication this was anti-semitic crime or a hate crime and there was no indication this was tied to any terrorism so we will see what investigators say. two officers were shot yesterday, they were released from the hospital. >> there was an announcement about officers being on alert in new york city. appreciate it.

to you? >> the most interesting thing i have seen out of all of this is the unique nature of these articles of impeachment. they don't charge a crime. every article of impeachment that has been brought up before charged an actual crime and the other interesting thing to me, this is what senator graham may have been hinting in these comments, the case the democrats had presented for obstruction and abuse of power is incredibly weak on this record and i would go so far as to say the only people proven to have abused their power or obstructed congress are chairman schiff and chairman nadler which makes this an odd proceeding. heather: those are some of the witnesses they said they would like to call. here is what donald trump had to say a couple days ago.

>> the hearings, we want biden, we want hunter, we want the sun, we want adam schiff, we want to interview these people to testify in the senate. heather: he said the senate should do a motions to dismiss, saying the same thing that there should not be a trial for the reasons you said. what would happen with witnesses like hunter biden and joe biden, would they be off the hook? >> i don't necessarily think they would because you have two questions. the first is the impeachment trial itself. the second and broader question that is relevant here is oversight. was there an issue with burisma that should have been addressed? there a potential conflict of interest issue that was overlooked and should be

addressed? independent of the impeachment proceedings you have ongoing oversight proceedings in the senate so you can see those witnesses called as part of that at some point. heather: another thing that is happening today, horwitz is going to testify on the ig report. what do you expect to hear from him? what is important to hear? >> what mister horwitz will do is hit points of his report and answer questions from both sides of the day us designed to draw facts from the report that are favorable to their position. i don't think we will get much new information. i've worked with a lot of igs, generally the substance of their report is the substance of the report and that is what they testify to? heather: have you ever seen anything like this, speaking from your experience, the partisan elements of all of this thomas so evident.

concept that says we don't like you so we are going to find things we find objectionable about you. everyone focusing on the ig report but jerry nadler and the judiciary committee released a report saturday and in it described the basis for why they are pursuing impeachment and it is stunning. it is not because the president did anything wrong in the past, they want to prevent him doing something wrong in the upcoming election. that has no foundation in the law and is stunning. todd: 1 repeatedly the two people involved in the phone call between ukraine and the us, the president and the president of ukraine both say there was none of this that happened in terms of allegations democrats are making. >> now pressure, the president didn't receive anything he was supposed to allegedly receive in exchange for withholding the

organization? >> it is typical in terms of veterans. i got in the marine corps 20 years ago and when i got out i lost that sense of identity and sense of purpose. i found a group of people with similar mindset to continue to serve the community and it is a perfect fit for veterans, you have that experience in a chaotic environment and you use it. heather: that was during sandy hook and a couple other places. >> i went to nepal after the earthquakes and more recently in texas after hurricane harvey in puerto rico after hurricane maria. it was an opportunity for me to continue. heather: what does this mean to veterans who are involved, they go to these disaster scenes and help people. >> in the military you learn a lot of skills and how to deal with the chaotic environment and what we allow veterans to do is use those experiences to help people. heather: making them know they are valuable. what about the people you help?
