[applause] >> hi, guys. thanks, pete. tonight's my honor to present the awards for veterans service. a veteran might be someone you pass on the street, might work in a factory, maybe in a restaurant in your hometown. the backbones of our communities. they're the reason that we walk free in this country today. fight and encouraging fellow veterans to never give up. his story is right here. >> i'm sergeant rob jones. i was a combat engineer in the marine corps. july 22,2010, i was trying to clear a danger area of ieds. and and ied found me first and that rounded in double above the knee amputations. i realized quickly that just because i was missing my legs above the knee now, that didn't mean that my life's mission had changed. i still wanted my life to be something that i could be proud of. i wanted my life to be something that made a difference in the

world. i was able to go to the paralympics in 2012 and won a bronze medal. i won my bike from maine to san diego. in 2017, i ran 31 marathons in 31 days, 31 different cities. i did all of that to show no matter what your circumstances, veterans can stay in the fight. the support that i got from my loved ones was an unspoken thing. when i first got injured, they were there to support me no matter what. with their support, i was able to stay positive and not give up. so i kind of set a precedent for myself of being positive and keeping our mission and stay going. >> rob took the final steps of his marathon journey on veterans day 2017. his efforts raised over $200,000 for wounded veterans charity. >> because a wounded veteran is

injured in some way doesn't mean they're broken or uncapable of contributing to society somehow. that gets me out of the bed in the morning and keeps me going when it hurts. [cheers & applause] >> so tonight's most valuable patriot award goes to marine corps sergeant rob jones. >> so rob, the country is inspired by you, your story and the one they just saw when you were introduced for the first time. how did the rob jones that we're looking at today, how is it from the rob jones that had both of your legs coming out of the war? >> i can't really tell you. if i hadn't been wounded, i might have been killed the next day by a bullet or stepped on another iud and killed there. it's hard to answer that question. what i've done is just accept whatever situation i have and just move forward with what i can affect and that's what i'm going to do now, what i'm going to do next. >> 31 marathons in 31 days in 31 cities. >> yes, sir. >> how close were you to saying, you know what? 28 was enough? >> well, i think a lot of people asked me that. but as far as i'm concerned, if you're going to do something like that, you have to take it to the maximum. i didn't want anybody to say but

afterwards, you did -- you could have done 31. >> how did you do most of that? most of us can't do one marathon. were you in pain? >> yeah, most of it. it hurt a lot. especially the last one. but it starts with a good team. you know, i've had teams of people helping me throughout my entire life. you know, all the way from marine corps, i had my brothers with me. after i got wounded, i had medical staff and my family and me friends and coaches and people like that. my wife and my mom were there on the marathon. i had a good team behind me. i had a lot of preparation. took me 18 months of training to get ready for it. then i had a great purpose and creating a story about veterans that we can all use. >> you have a great story. ladies and gentlemen, rob jones. questions asked. >> can't beat it. a young man doing a good cause, something that makes everybody feel good. >> charlie's father is a commandner the united states navy. >> i couldn't be more proud of charlie and what he's doing with this patriotism project. as an officer in in the navy, who wouldn't be proud of their season going door-to-door asking people to put up american flags. >> he understands that he wants to be a part of a project bigger than himself. that is just to me the step one in making of a patriot. >> i don't think i'm much of a hero. i like spreading patriotism. will happen. the most patriotic sport we have out there. keep that in mind. thank you. >> sergeant john was a police officer 30 years and on the swat and dive rescue teams for over 19. he received many awards over the years. one for rescuing a man during a triathalon. >> i take pride in my country, the flag. i've unfortunately seen it covering too many coffins. i think we can take time out to give two minutes worth of respect to our soldiers, firemen, policemen. i don't think it's asking too much. i'm not going to apologize for asking players to show a little bit of respect when it's the american or canadian national anthem. >> courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway. as a first responder, you hear a lot. they're running in as everyone sells is running out. travis joined the army reserve after 9-11. so he knew exactly what he was getting into. the country was already at war. that speaks volumes about the kind of person that travis is, that he gave up the comforts of home to be deployed twice to the middle east. travis took the test to become a lieutenant before being deplayed. with lieutenant vacancies became available, he was selected by the chief and his staff. >> you have been promoted to the rank of lieutenant. [applause] >> i don't know what to say.
