country. one state trooper showing us what one driver could be in for. a new year means a lot of new laws including a big change to help protect your privacy online. i'm molly line in new york, fox news reporting begins now. ♪ ♪ [explosion] >> molly: we begin with breaking news. chants of death to america as militia men and protesters tried to storm the u.s. embassy in iraq. president trump accusing iran of orchestrating the attack. a state department spokesperson says the embassy staff is safe. there are no plans to evacuate. and the ambassador was not there at the time. demonstrators battering their way through a window with security forces on the other side. the glass the only thing holding back the crowd. fox news has confirmed a special crisis response task force of marines has arrived at the embassy to help protect it from any further attacks. this is video of the unit deploying on this mission from kuwait. the violence breaking out just days after the u.s. military launched airstrikes against an iranian backed militia group in iraq in response to the rocket attack that killed an american contractor. we have team fox coverage. first to trey yingst, reporting live from our mideast news hub. trey? >> mollie, good afternoon, hundreds of iraqis stormed the u.s. embassy today in baghdad. prompting iraqi security forces to intervene. those protesters, some of them related to iranian backed militias inside iraqi set fire to parts of the compound smashing windows and chanting down, down u.s.a. the ambassador is out of town as you noted. though embassy security

forces were seen trying to push back demonstrators with tear gas and rubber bullets. this comes after u.s. airstrikes on sunday targeted a iraqi she a militia group responsible for rocket attacks on friday that killed one american contractor. the group that was hit has vowed to respond against the united states. >> it is flagrant aggression. it is aggression on iraq's sovereignty. it is a violation of all norms and values. this aggression won't pass ununpunished. >> did i speak with unu.s. official today who is stressing on behalf of the president the difference between the protesters the embassy today and those who have been demonstrating against the iraqi government. many of those on the embassy compound today once again are backed by the iranian regime and part of a number of militias that do operate within iraqi's borders. mollie? >> the iraqi government not seeming pleased by the american airstrikes. what's the response now from the government? >> that's exactly right.

they are certainly not pleased. iraqi prime minister did speak out against this operation by the united states. calling it a violation of iraqi sovereignty. and today iraqi government did tweet that they would respond against any aggression toward foreign embassies in their country. one u.s. official praising those security forces for stepping in and descalating the situation that happened at the embassy today. the entire timeline of events though does spell trouble for future american-iraqi relations. the 25 militants that were killed may be backed by iran but most of them are iraqi citizens. again, the prime minister very outspoken about this u.s. decision and we are getting reports this hour, molly, that president trump and iraqi prime minister did speak over the phone to discuss the situation today and other pressing topics related to america and iraq. molecule molly? >> molly: tray yingst, thank you. rich edson reporting live on this. rich? >> the president also spoke with the prime minister of iraq today and stressed the

need for the iraqi government to protect american personnel and facilities in iraq. the secretary of state mike pompeo also spoke with the iraqi prime minister and the iraqi president today and according to the state department, pushed a very similar message that the charge of the host country in this case iraq to safeguard american diplomats and american diplomatic facilities. the president did tweet earlier today, quote: to those many millions of people in iraq who want freedom and who don't want to be dominated and controlled by iran, this is your time. the president says iran will be held fully responsible for these protests. the u.s. says these are iranian backed demonstrations, separate from those who have been protesting corruption in iraq since october. these protests began after a prayer service for militia men killed in a u.s. airstrike this weekend. the president is defending those strikes saying they are in response to iran-backed militias launching a missile attack on an iraqi military base that killed an american contractor. also senior state department

officials say that when it comes to iranian influence and iranian attacks, iranian backed militia attacks that the united states simply couldn't take it anymore and had to respond like this and said to create deterrence in the region against the type of rocket or missile attacks that they saw on friday. molly? >> molly: america has certainly been clear about the expectations going forward. the video is not reassuring but state department officials say american diplomats are safe, right? >> right. the video is striking there were fires, they were in the come pound. those who had been protesting in front of there for hours today. according to officials, all the diplomats are secure inside. all u.s. personnel are secure inside. that there are no plans for an evacuation as it stands. the ambassador to iraq matt tuler was out of town on a personal trip and officials say he is now returning to baghdad since these protests have broken out. the embassy there is also telling americans in iraq who need assistance just to stay away from the embassy.

fed says a man who astacked a facility had handwritten journals. chief religion correspondent lauren green is here now to explain a little more about this. lauren? >> hey, molly, while his family was pleading this was a case of mental illness federal authorities say there is enough evidence to charge the suspect with federal hate crimes in the bloody attack at a rabbi's home while dozens celebrated hanukkah the federal charges were filed monday against the 37-year-old. officials say the handwritten journals containing anti-semitic references and had searched online to find information on hitler, including entries asking, quote: why did hitler hate the jews and prominent companies founded by jews in america. according to the complaint, the man entered the rabbi's home in monsey new york on the seventh night of hun cat jewish festivals of lights wielding an 18-inch machete he slashed and stabbed the group sending five victims to the hospital with serious injuries including deep lacerations, a severed finger and skull fracture.

the suspect is now charged with five federal counts of obstructing the free exercise of religion in an attempt to kill. july july the suspect's family has sort of spoken on his behalf in a way. >> absolutely. the attorney says the family pastor, he and the family pastor reviewed his client's journals and says they show more evidence of mental illness than anti-semitism. >> reverend and i reviewed scores of papers which frankly show the ramblings of a disturbed individual but there is no suggestion in any of those ramblings and pages of writing of an anti-semitic motive. >> while, meanwhile, the attack has spiked tensions in the jewish comi community as the latest in a number of anti-semitic actions. it's up 23% according to the new york police. last night senator kirsten gillibrand hosted a round table discussion on the rise in anti-semitism. while jewish officials complain of a long simmering

problem. >> our community is angry. and this is not the -- this incident is the culmination of a long period of hatred directed toward the jewish community. >> now there is a light of hope to report. the hero who arushed the attacker away and got the vehicle's license plate being honored today with an award. >> molly: lauren green, thank you so much. our next guest is rabbi jeffrey meyers from the tree of life synagogue in pittsburgh. that is where a gunman shot and killed 11 people and injured seven others. a little more than a year ago. rabbi myers has said since the attack he has focused on how to get word rid of the word hate and focus on hope. >> rabbi, thank you for taking the time out for us today. i want to start asking you as someone who knows so intimately an attack and loss thereafter what you thought when you saw this attack on folding in monsey

at a rabbi's home? >> my initial response was oh no, not again. >> molly: now we have heard there are hate crime charges filed against the suspect in this case. do you think that's appropriate? you know, when you are talking about looking forward and moving towards hope right now in the natio nation? >> i don't know if filing charges against one individual in any way can help heal the physical wounds, the spiritual, and the mental wounds that a traumatized community can feel in any way, shape, or form. that is a continuous process over a very long period of time. that's the far more difficult matter than really the judicial process itself. >> rabbi, this attack in monsey was far from the only attack in recent weeks and months here in the new jersey and the new york area.

and have you roots here in this community. spiritual roots in this community. a police officer was killed in the shooting rampage at a kosher market. there was the slapping of a jewish mother in the street. really just a number of pretty disturbing incidents. do you see a rise in anti-semitism across the country and in these communities? >> yes, i do. it's been reported throughout various sources whether it's the reports from fbi various price, police, the adl. they are all saying the same thing which is ther there is an unprecedented rise anti-semitic acts be it ones of mer graffiti or in the case of monsey horrific violence. >> molly: i guess do you feel it? do people in your community feel it? is there a greater concern about safety now? >> yes, there is.

i'm saddened that there are people who are frightened to continue to celebrate, at that point, the remainder of hanukkah people who took menorah out of their window and put it away. people who were afraid to go to synagogue because of this act. it's a trauma not merely to those in monsey, but it traumatizes the jewish community throughout the united states when something horrific like this happens. >> this past week many people celebrating christmas. many people celebrating hanukkah you are a great teacher, a man of faith. what can we do collectively to push back against this? >> clearly there is so the rot to the core in america that we have this continued rise no anti-semitic acts. to that end i say that shame on america. we're failing as a nation when we see rises in this

sort of behavior on a nonstop basis. it says to me that we're not doing enough to make sure that we know our neighbors, to understand the people around us. to grow in respect and love and understanding of each other. it also says to me that there is far too much severe rhetoric coming from both sides of the political spectrum. too much uncivil discourse that encourages people to speak that same way and frequently turn to acts of violence. a perfect example is severe speech that turned into a massacre in my congregation. we need to learn to tone down rhetoric. we need to learn to understand and appreciate our neighbors better. because when we do we will understand we are so much alike than we are different. >> molly: rabbi jeffrey myers, thank you for your words right now. see if we are reaching

♪ >> molly: the pentagon sending in a special crisis response task force of marines to help secure the u.s. embassy in iraq after a mob of militia men and protesters attacked that compound. we have lucas tomlinson. is he report from the pentagon on all of this as it unfolds. lucas? >> molly, over 100 marines with full assault load have arrived at the u.s. embassy in baghdad to protect the compound. the marine task force launched from an air base in kuwait about 400 miles away

investigators. have lied and are wanted for questioning. in a statement, rex ford police say quote we strongly believe joshua and tylee's lives are in danger. they told witnesses that lori's daughter had died a year before the death of her father, which is untrue. around that same time, chad told another witness that lori had no minor children. valow's brother shot and killed her estranged husband earlier this year and later authorities say that brother died under mysterious circumstances. friends claim vallow joined a cult and often talked about end of times and she encouraged others to read books written by daybell who she married in october weeks after his wife tammy died. police originally ruled tammy daybell's death as natural. they have since exhumed her body and investigating it as suspicious. the fbi along with local law enforcement in arizona where the couple ha connections are searching for the kids and people they believe know

2019. and if you want to think about the s&p 500, it is actually the best performing year for this index. at least since 2013. we will see where we close today in about a half an hour's time. it could be even more than that for 10 years, molly, if you bought stocks 10 years ago here are the returns that you got. they have pretty substantial. for anybody who has a had 01 k or a pension. this has been a good decade. dow up 173%. the nasdaq up in the past 10 years about 300 percent. apple for those wondering, the best performing dow component of this year and of the decade. we have the iphones, of course, all the streaming services. and now the oh so famous ear buds air pods. the ones that people are waiting for under the tree. some are still waiting for those. that's how popular they are. analysts saying this bodes well for the stock in the future, molly. >> molly: a lot of folks taking a quick look at the

♪ >> molly: hundreds of new state laws set to take effect at midnight. including one that could bring a big change to. so web sites that you visit. chief correspondent jonathan hunt joins us live from los angeles. jonathan? >> hey, molly, california is leading the charge in trying to tackle the vast complex issue of online privacy or the lack thereof with a new law that will mandate that companies disclose what personal data they are keeping and will allow consumers to ask those companies to delete their personal information and not sell it. almost any company doing business through a website will be required to prominently display a button that says do not sell my

personal information it's the nation's most far reaching data privacy law aimed at social media giants like facebook or any large company based anywhere in the country or doing online business with california customers. in other words, pretty much any company with a website. california also weighed in to the growing gig economy. making it more difficult for companies to treat workers like contractors instead of employees who would be entitled to minimum wage and other benefits such as workers' comp. uber and post mates are among those companies seeking an injunction to prevent that law going into effect at midnight. monthliy. >> molly: some of those new laws heading into 2020 have political overtemperatures, possibly. >> not surprising whether i an election year coming. gun control one of those divisive issues which is likely to be the subject of much debate in 2020. colorado, a state, of course, that has seen more

than its fair share of shooting tragedies and now it is enacting a red flag law that would allow family members or law enforcement officers to petition a court to have gun seized from people deemed a threat to themselves or others. colorado's governor, jared pollock is a supporter of the law. but its faced pushback from some of those who would have to enforce it? >> the root problem is not the firearms. the root problem is a tsunami of mental health issues. acute mental health crisis we see on a daily basis. they did almost nothing to address it. >> now, main law marijuana lawse also changing. recreational use will be legal, for instance after midnight and then food waste. if you have any parties left over in vermont throw them out at exactly 11:59 p.m. after that composting becomes mandatory.

year. we are in times square. the crowds have grown. we've got people that have either been checked out, wanted, staffed by canines and cleared by nypd if they are down here on the ground. we've had some checks going on. ll cool j has been giving a sound check for the crowd. there's a lot more to go. it's a beautiful night compared to the evenings we've had in the last few years. there is no rain. it's not bitter cold. nypd said they are taking extra precautions as much as they can as i do every year. this is going to be the first ft year that times square will see drones being used by the nypd. they were going to try to do that last year and they weren't able to because of the rain. they will have that extra layer of security. the crowds are coming in. nypd is expecting more people because of the good weather. this is a spot to be.
