first in baghdad, trace gallagher is there. this has been developing all day. >> a tense last day of 2019 in the middle east. hundreds of iraqis stormed the u.s. embassy in baghdad. iraqi security forces intervened. the embassy is still on lock down with american citizens inside. the ambassador is out of town. embassy security forces were trying to push back demonstrators with teargas and rubber bullets. mike pompeo spoke to the iranian prime minister. the president took to twitter to call on the iraqis to protect the embassy saying this was orchestrated by iran.

saying the democrats will do anything to avoid a trial in the senate in order to protect sleepy joe. dana, susan collins expressed witnesses in the impeachment trial. where do you see this headed? >> i put that thinking off until after the new year. what i think doesn't matter. what is mitch mcconnell thinking it. mitch mcconnell and schumer and pelosi have to think about what is in the best interest of their party in order to win as many seats as they can in 2020 during the presidential election year? i know that sounds political and we should just be talking about the constitution. that's what they are thinking about. schumer thinks he has the

possibility of flipping a few seats from republican to democrats on the senate side. republicans think they have a handle to keep this majority. but it's a slim one. mcconnell is thinking in those terms. the president weighed in. he wants this all aired out. i think biden should have said i won't answer a hypothetical. he opened this pandera's box. >> the seats that the republicans have to hold on. they are starting to hear some talk from constituents up to 70% of americans say they want witnesses. if it's going to be a fair trial we need to hear from witnesses. when bill clinton was impeached they were interviewed as part of

that. with mcconnell and schumer come to an agreement? >> they can. i think there won't be witnesses. i would prefer the witnesses to come out. it should all be put on the table. i know it's going to be a war and not best for some political parties. mcconnell -- i'm sorry schumer thinks it's beneficial for him to have witnesses testify. it's good for the country to put all of this on the table and duke it out in a civilized way. the american people want this to be finely put to bed. i am for the trial. >> i don't think the democrats want a trial. i think they know it's a loser. they know it was a mistake but they could not go back. they passed the point of no return. they have to act like they still want it. nobody wants it. if joe biden was smart, he would

running around whipping senators to vote to cut it off. the big loser in this will be joe biden. the hunter biden thing will stay alive as long as impeachment is alive. >> congresswoman gabbert weighed in on this. >> we all know that trump won't be found guilty and removed from office by the u.s. senate. the impeachment in my view will actually increase his support among voters. it will make him harder to defeat. further more the house impeachment has increased the likelihood that republicans will take over the house of representatives. >> when i watch her on video, all i can think about is "saturday night live." she is playing a weird spoiler role trying to warn democrats this may be a political loser. you hear from house members who voted for impeachment yes it might be. it was the right thing to do.

how do you handicap this politically? i am not sure we can. >> that's an interesting question. she doesn't provide a viable alternative. she is like the ref that points it out but doesn't give you a result. and the motion to dismiss or going through the trial. as we discuss the merits of having witnesses called. senate collins said i will wait and hear the evidence and then determine whether my analis is augmented with witnesses. as long as this keeps going, they have the viable argument about the hunter biden situation. we have mayor pete weighing in and jake tapper. it seems cloudy. even though they say nothing is
