[cheers and applause] >> this awards show will be unlike anything you have ever seen and couldn't be more excited to bring it to you live from the beautiful theater in st. petersburg, florida. they call it saint pete's, right? saint pete's. a nickname nobody has ever given me ever. here is the deal. hollywood has their award shows, right? self-important, they've got a lot of them.

self important types giving to others self-important types. big trophies given to actors who play he rose on tv. tonight we honor the real heroes. [cheers and applause] pete: this is the oscars of what really matters. tonight we are honoring inspirational americans who didn't seek the spotlight and never expected to be recognized. every day patriots who have done exceptional things for our great nation because america is the most free, most powerful and most prosperous country in human history. amen. because of patriots of every generation willing to step up in

ways large and small. the patriot awards will showcase powerful examples of patriotism that deserve to be celebrated. join me now. we are trying real hard, welcoming our first presenter of the night country music superstar and owner of redneck riviera, the one, the only john rich. >> hey, guys, thanks, pete. tonight it is my honor to present the award for veteran service. a veteran might be someone you pass on the street, might work in a factory, might own a restaurant, the backbone of our communities and the reasons we walk free in this country today.

how are you doing? >> i thought it was over there. >> wait, wait. >> like that guy. >> no matter how -- ainsley is always in the middle. >> good morning. >> you know we have been up a while. we all had to shave to get ready for this. we have been up since 2:30 in the morning. i am going to do something we rarely do, i'm going to go go pram -- back to the prompter. qualities among many patriots our dedication and inspiration in tonight we honor a veteran who endlessly embodies both. we give the award for mvp, most valuable patriot. >> exactly right. for our next -- it has never been about the awards or the recognition. >> it was about the relentless

fight in encouraging fellow veterans to never give up. his story is right here. >> i am sergeant ron jones, combat engineer in the marine corps, july 22, 2010, i was in the process of trying to clear out a danger area of ied. and ied found me first and that resulted in amputations. i realized pretty quickly just because i was missing my legs above the knee that didn't mean my life's mission had changed. i still wanted my life to be something to be proud of.

i wanted my life to be something that made a difference in the world. i was able to go to the paralympics in 2012, when a bronze medal in rowing which i was able into thousand 14-14 to ride my bike from maine to san diego in 2017 i was able to run 31 marathons in 31 days, 31 cities and i did all of that to show no matter what your circumstances veterans can stand and fight. the support i got from my loved ones was an unspoken thing. when i first got injured they were there to support me no matter what. with their support i was able to stay positive and not give up. i set a precedent for myself of being positive and keeping on mission. >> rob took the final steps in his marathon journey on veterans day, his efforts raised $200,000 for wounded veterans charities. >> a wounded veteran is injured

in some way doesn't mean they are broken or incapable of returning to society. that mission gets me out of bed in the morning and keeps me going. >> tonight's most valuable patriot award goes to marine corps sergeant jones. >> the country is inspired by you, your story, how did the rob jones we are looking at today, how is your life different from the rob jones who had both legs coming out of the war? >> i can't really tell you. if i hadn't been with that i might have been killed the next day by a sniper's bullet or stepped on another it and been killed, hard to answer the question. what i have done is accept whatever situation i have and move forward with what i can affect and that is what i am going to do now and what i'm going to do next. >> 31 marathons in 31 days in 31 cities. how close to saying 28 was enough? >> a lot of people ask me that but as far as i am concerned if you do something like that you

take it to the maximum and i didn't want anybody to say that afterwards, you could have done 31. >> most of us can't do that? are you in pain? >> it hurt a lot. especially the last one. it starts with 15. i had teams of people helping me throughout my entire life. i had my brothers with me and after i got wounded i had medical staff, family and friends and coaches and people like that, my wife and mom were there, i had a good team behind me and a lot of preparation, took 18 months of training to get ready for it and i had a great purpose creating a story about veterans that we could all use. >> you had a great story. ladies and gentlemen, this man, rob jones. >> a lot of people have fought and died for our country, flying an american flag is a good way. >> i noticed not a lot of people were flying an american flag. >> we are trying to get people to fly more american flags outside their houses and say thank you to people in our community. >> how do you inspire people to put out a flag, put a discount on one. >> i didn't expect anyone to take me seriously. i was very surprised this many people bought a flag. there were maybe four or five flags before i came here and now there's one on everything a house. >> anything i can do to help

this could with his project, no questions asked. >> can't beat it. a young man doing a good cause that makes everybody feel good. >> charlie's father is a commander in the united states navy, special appreciation for the men and women who serve our country. >> i couldn't be proud of charlie, what he is doing with this project, as an officer in the navy who wouldn't be proud of their son going door-to-door asking people to fly american flags. >> he wants to be part of a project and that to me is step one. >> i just like spreading patriotism. [applause] >> charlie, congratulations. we always want our children to have things we never had when we were younger like as on our report card and you are a straight a student but i also said this. of what you did yesterday looks big to you you haven't done much today. what are the plans you have for the future? tell the people. >> i pretty much carried this project all the way to its end.

my next project is to get commercial movie theaters to play the national anthem. >> thank you for your service and thank you so much for raising a remarkable young man. congratulations. >> if you are like me you are sitting back and thinking charlie and his father exist to make the rest of us feel we are inadequate parents. god bless that kid. thank you for making it your mission to spread patriotism house by house and block by block. what an amazing story with more chapters to be written. why can't we anymore? our next award will have all sports fans cheer.

sense wasting anybody's time. >> the most patriotic sport out there. keep that in mind. >> a police officer for 30 years and rescue teams from 19, received many awards including rescuing someone who had a heart attack. >> i take pride in my country, the flag, i have seen it covering too many coffins and i think we can take time out to give two minutes worth of respect to our soldiers, firemen, police. i don't think that's asking too much and i will not apologize for asking players to show a little bit of respect when it is the american or canadian national anthem. [applause] >> congratulations. >> thank you very much. >> you have so many people here saluting what you do every single day as a police officer but secondly as a sportsmen as well. not just a hall of fame or but when they pick the top 50 nba players of all time rick barry was on the list and you know a lot about sports. >> i wish more coaches would follow your example and take the stand that you talk.

and what i would like to know from you is what motivated you, what is it that made you feel so adequate about taking that stand? >> respecting our flag and anthem should be a basic concept of every american. that came at a time we are having a bad week and sometimes things need to be set and i felt that week it needed to be said. i criticized some of these athletes who have refused to do that and blamed it on coaching, i said it was a coaching problem and i wasn't going to have that problem. >> thank you. congratulations. >> when we come back, the award for first responders.

death but doing it anyway. of the first responder you hear a lot, they are running in and everyone else is running out. joining the army reserve after 9/11, he knew what he was getting into. the country was already at war and that speaks volumes about the kind of person travis is that he gave up the comforts of home to deploy not once but now twice to the middle east, took the test to become a lieutenant before being deployed and when vacancies became available he was selected by the chief and his staff. >> you have been promoted to the rank of lieutenant. >> very helpful. >> the other quality i will tell you about had nothing to do with travis flying helicopters, when you see travis interact with his wife jessica or three daughters it literally -- makes you be a better husband and better father. >> he keeps everyone safe. >> sometimes -- he doesn't -- to protect our country. >> i missed him. good to see him out there fighting for us. >> i miss the jokes.

>> you don't get to have family traditions. my dad visits on halloween but he is not always here. he makes the most of it. >> he can make a joke out of anything, literally anything. he works two jobs and never complains. >> i look up to my dad because he is very humble person. he has a grateful heart. >> i want to be just like him. [applause] >> god bless you all. how are you? how are you? i would like to present you with this award and tell us what makes travis so special? service twice in this role. >> it truly brings him joy to help people and being a first responder is something he wanted to do since he was very little and it was a later in life decision but he never regretted and he enjoys both and feels like today it is not about him but about all the first responders because there are a lot who serve their community and country and they are reservists in the military and they come home and their civilian job to be a first responder, we have 50 members of the local police department he works for in the audience who support him.
