america. they broke through the outer wall. they set fire to one of the outpost in the compound before finally being repelled. thousands more waited behind them, angry at uss airstrikes against an iranian backed militia that killed an american contractor. u.s. troops were told to fire back if fired upon and u.s. apache helicopter gun ships fired flares from above. soldiers took up defensive positions and fired tear gas. president trump praised the u.s. response. >> i think it's been handled very well. the marines come in. we had some great warriors come in and do a fantastic job. they were there instantaneously. as soon as we heard. this will not be a benghazi. benghazi should never have happened. this will never ever be a benghazi. >> a special crisis response task force of more than 100 marines arrived at the embassy to protect it. deploying immediately from kuwait. another 750 more soldiers are now deploying to the reason another 4,000 could

soon join them. president trump saying iran would be held fully responsible for any lives lost. any damage done and it is they who bear the brunt, a big price he said if anything were to happen. this is not a warning, this is a threat. back to you. pete: absolutely. benjamin thank you very much for the update. going back all morning as things develop. ongoing situation for a second day there iran has had a slow motion takeover of iraq for a very long time. dean: very long time. pete: been killing american troops. consolidate control over the government. consolidate their militias. we kill a bunch of their terrorists where we know where they are in camps. they go at our embassy. they weren't shooting. they were rioting. which is a -- only a slight difference but smart to show restraint so as not to escalate the situation. we have got to be strong against iran you don't want to trigger something bigger when you don't have to. to.rach i do love the clarity. we all thought of benghazi.

i love that the president doesn't dance anything. you get exactly what he is thinking. which is what we are thinking. we don't want another benghazi. we know how hillary handled that she said what difference does it make? we will see 100 marines in there clearly made a difference. the protesters are there. no one has been harmed so far. dean: as it should be. twitter was alive and well. a couple of the tweets that i liked came from a couple friends of mine who are war fighters and friends of mine as well rob o'neill said our guyguys were in trouble, asked the marines boom they are there. sean parnell army ranger tweeted something in support about our marines being there. fantastic, really happy with the response. glad that it sort of tamped down. wonder what it's like there now. i wonder if those crowds are thinned out. if they have done their deal or if it's going to escalate. i can't see it escalating with 100 marines there and a couple of gun ships. pete: it may fizzle. there may be a couple days worth. we will bring it to you. what this is indicative of there is a new sheriff in town. new approach when it comes to iran.

secretary of state mike pompeo spoke yesterday about how the president takes a different approach. listen. >> we came in when the previous administration had provided lots of money. lots of money that was used for that nuclear program. lots of money that had been used for terror all around the world, develop their missile program. trump administration the different view. we put real pressure on the islamic republic of iran and we will continue to do so. you saw the president say we will continue to hold the islamic republic of iran accountable. we will make sure we have the resources to do so. rachel: not trump style but still speaking very clearly about the pallets of cash that obama unmarked bills that we knew would be used to fund terror like this. i kind of liked that he is speaking clearly like that. pete: remember when our sailors were captured in the persian gulf and paraded on iranian propaganda and we begged for them back? that's not happening right now. dean: no. pete: the resolution in iraq is a bad situation there.

there is no real upside. we will see where that goes. there is plenty of still consternation here at home as we go into a new year and see whether or not this so-called impeachment trial will happen in the senate. well representative al green you guys have heard of him. rachel: absolutely. >> dana: tip over. rachel: that's not him. dean: i apologize. pete: more clear and more honest in the house of representatives about why this impeachment started in the first place. here he is yet gotten on msnbc admitting what this is all about. listen. >> well, the genesis of impeachment, to be very candid with you was when the president was running for office and he had members of his own party to talk about his own unfitness to hold office. so the president didn't have the luxury of persons from his party having been on his side as it were throughout

this entire ordeal. dean: there it is. rachel: is he a truth teller. he has been saying since day one. he said the president needed to be impeached because he is unacceptable. and he was saying that this was the case before he was even elected. and then right after he was elected he passed this resolution to impeach. he is telling the truth. the president is right to tweet about this. tells you about his district. it must play well in his district to do this. does not play well across the country. dean: or with the constitution. throw this out. rachel: he didn't get the memo from nancy pelosi that we're supposed to pretend there is a constitutional reason. he said he is not a great guy we should get him out. pete: he was never prayerful from the beginning. dean: wasn't sad. pete: coming after him no matter. what crew of people seeking to run against president obama, they keep rolling and they keep talking and saying things they wish they hadn't said. joe biden is one of them.

now, he was on the campaign trail in new hampshire on monday, asked a question about whether he would be open to a bipartisan ticket, working with a republican. here is what uncle joe had to say. >> our 21-year-old son said the other night i wonder if joe biden would consider choosing a republican as a running mate. >> the answer is i would but i can't think of one now. pete: we are back with a fox news alert. as a second day of protests rage in baghdad. president trump putting iran on notice in a tweet he warns, iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost or damage incurred at any of our facilities. they will pay a very big price. this is not a warning. it is a threat. happy new year. fox news contributor daniel hoffman served in iraq as a former cia station chief. he joins us now to weigh in.

daniel, thank you for being here. happy 2020. your reaction to what happened on the ground and how the president is responding to it. >> iran hab ratcheting attacks on u.s. personnel and installations over the past couple of months. and, looking history has shown if we don't counter iranian attacks against our people and defender ourselves, then we are never going to deter them down the road. the president has been very clear with his policy. and secretary of state mike pompeo earlier last month said the united states would respond with decisive action. and we did. that's really the only way to deal with iran. it's important to make the connection. these are iranian proxy militias carrying out iran's strategic intent in iraq against the united states. pete: daniel are they acting out because their economy is in a free fall? what is the end state that iran wants in doing this? >> that's party of it. iran wants strategically to reduce the united states influence in iraq. also, keep in mind over the past few months, brave iraqis have been protesting.

government of iraq corruption and iranian influence in the country. iran wants to change that narrative and make it appear as if the united states is the enemy of iraq. but the unite that the united ss is the cause that all that economically is wrong with iraq. iran is cognizant that iran is without a prime minister right now and they want to be the king maker. they want to reduce u.s. influence in that discussion. pete: daniel, as we know, we spent countless lives and treasure in iraq. iran is now largely in control of that country is iraq salvageable? is it worth american investment? talk about how average folks should view the situation. >> we have seen since 2003, iran has sought to penetrate iraqi security ministries, particularly ministry of interior. they have embedded the popular mobilization units which are really iraqi proxy militias. essentially into the iraqi government. they hold a lot of influence. now, it's not over yet. the united states, i think, should be doubling down on our diplomacy with the

fan the past 11 years. avengers end game top film box office wide. this character black widow natasha scarlet johannsen characters actually died in avengers end game greated a question why would we want to see a prequell to a character who is going to die. history her family, florence pugh is going to be in the film. the action looks incredible from the trailer. i love the synthesizing music they use in the trailer. i was very impressed at also a female director as well. looking forward to see how this film turns out. dean: i'm a little on the fence for that one. no offense. get it? >> i like a good pun. first pun i have heard in the new year so thank you for that. rachel: i'm a big james bond fan i love the old old ones roger moore and sean connery. you think this one is good, too? >> this is amazing. oddly enough you look at

black widow we mentioned that's the 24th film in the marvel cinematic universe. this james bond movie is the 25th james bond film obviously daniel craig. sky fall was my favorite bond movie in a long time director sam mendez who has a movie out right now called 1917. this is a filmmaker who directed and created the show true detective. everything he did on that show i was so impressed by the visual elements of that show that that's why i'm excited about this bond movie. i did not love specter but the trailer for this one when the car is flipping around and shooting. it looks insane. i'm so excited about this one and lashuan that lynch -- pete: can't be fun when it's done right but i hope you are right. dean: one way to beat bond with one of my favorite actresses. i will watch her drink a cup of coffee. pete: here's a quick clip.

biden moved so far to compete and adapt with what's going on with that base thinks really it's possible that he could hook up with a republican. of course he could that's been the issue in the swamp for so long for too long. the american people have finally seen it. thank goodness, trump has been applied. this is the issue of policy. why we see liberal cities. not just declining but destroying themselves. because policy matters. and there is a difference between liberalism and conservatism korverism free's people and free's the nature of what we are able to accomplish in our lives. you can't have a genuine conservative working with someone like joe biden and bernie sanders is free to say it because he knows he won't be the nominee. rachel: you say that. >> absolutely. the democratic party won't allow it. because of course they are going to fix this like they did the last one. it will be a disaster. the party has collapsed like their cities have collapsed.

bernie sanders can be honest. he knows that there is no -- so far to the left he knows he doesn't have to harm his brand to say that to pander to people. rachel: you say parties matter. 8 years under obama to prove it works and very lackluster. >> you are very diplomatic. rachel: now we are living in the greatest time. the greatest decade. this is extraordinary growth. we are calling it the roaring 20's over here on the couch. >> look. you don't have abou hear about . it's not exciting it. doesn't move the left's narrative. the media doesn't cover it. when you look at the decrease in poverty worldwide by double digits when it comes to how people are living their lives. we are actually doing better when it comes to conservation around around the room and what we consume, et cetera. it's about the environment is doing better. the economies are doing better. poverty is less. i mean, we have got a lot of work to do.

to your court case. this gets rid of that does it not? >> it does. i get the point because you are poor and you can't make bail you shouldn't go to jail. there is a very simple way to deal with that the judge should have discretion to say hey, if you are a threat to your community, then i'm going to hold you because you can't make bail. if it's just a financial thing, okay, a minor crime, we release you. if you are affecting the community, the judge, we pay judges $200,000 in this state they should have the discretion to say this guy is going to put somebody in danger back in his or her neighborhood we should be able to put them away. that's what new jersey has. we don't have that. pete: if someone reports a crime or sees something, as a result someone else is arrested. the person arrested gets back out on the street retribution. witness tampering. i mean, this has a ripple effect. >> it does this. bill also included discovery reform. now you have to -- if you are a prosecutor, you have to handle the names of any witnesses and any evidence within 15 days. so if you called 11 and say hey i just saw a crime.

your name and phone number goes immediately to the defense attorney. in some cases the defense attorney and his client will be able to go to the scene of the crime. so let's say there is some kind of sexual assault in your house, they are going to get to go back and take measurements and walk around your house and really intimidated you and in a way revictimize you. it's not thought out. it was ran through in the middle of a night as part of a budget bill. we are deciding how we are going to spend money and tax in new york state and slide this mask bail reform. bring in district attorneys and law enforcement to see what they think. rerammed it through because it was at the top of the liberal wish list and we had one party control starting last january. and they got this through and it's going to be a disaster. we start on january 8th, 2020 legislative session. put a pause on this at minimum and at best we should repeal it. pete: supporters say you can't jail your way out of the problems you have in society with criminals. i mean, what's the counter argument? they say hey, we need this? we have got too many people in prison? how do you answer that

flags, they set fire to another burning just this morning and had to be dispersed by tear gas. last night much more violent, these militiamen storming the embassy, shouting death to america, breaking through the outer walls, setting fire to an outpost before being repelled. their anger was against airstrikes against an iranian-backed militia which had killed an american contractor. an apache helicopter fired flares from above. president trump has raised the u.s. response. >> i think it's been handled very well. the marines came in, we had some great warriors come in and do a fantastic job. they were there instantaneously, as soon as we heard. this will not be a benghazi. benghazi should never have happened. this will never, ever be a benghazi. >> reporter: a special crisis response task force with more than 100 marines arrived at the embassy, deploying immediately from neighboring kuwait.

at least 750 more soldiers are now deployed to the region, another 4,000 could soon join them. and the scene outside the embassy, militia leaders are now part of the iraqi army, part of these formal pmus, and it's a clear sign of the division, growing division in that country. back to you. dean dean benjamin, thank you very much. pete: as it moves along, it both gets more simple and more complicated in iraq. a lot of these units that the iraqi government used to fight against isis were actually iranian militias. and so is because, of course, the sunni isis is an enemy of iran, now they've been formally absorbed into the security forces of iraq which means iraq security forces are effectively iranian militia. and those militias are attacking our troops that are there. we respond, they go to our embassy. without guns this time because they wanted to create an incident. thankfully, our guards were

restrained and didn't shoot anybody to play into iran's hands. but iraq has a huge iran problem as we've had, as we have had there for a long time as well. rachel: it's so funny, i just think about the american people going this is why we want to get out of these areas. it is complicated and, you know, when i saw the images, the first thing i thought about was benghazi. and sure enough, the president, you know, says what he thinks, came right out and said we're not going to have another benghazi, and we didn't, it looks like, because we got a hundred marines in there right away. dean: spoke to dan hoffman earlier this morning, and here's what he had to say. >> we've seen, since 2003, iran has sought to penetrate iraqi security ministries, particularly ministry of interior. they've embedded these popular mobilization units which are really iraqi proxy militias, essentially, into the iraqi government. they hold a lot of influence. now, it's not over yet. the united states, i think, should be doubling down on our

diplomacy with the government of iraq and finding appropriate iraqi leaders with whom to work. but make no mistake, the battle for iraq's future carries on and is certainly a great challenge for us. pete: i respect daniel hoffman a great deal, i just feel like there are a lot of people who feel like we should be doubling down on anything. we've been there that long. you know, the purple finger of democracy, you've invested in the opportunity for so many people, yet -- and there are legitimate iraqis saying, hey, i want the future that was there before, but iran has stolen it from me. you could help those people. and, of course, you have got the kurds. but one of the guys i served with in iraq yesterday, glad to see all our hard work, blood, sweat and tears taking root in iraq. there's just, as you step back especially with our energy independence now -- rachel: right. pete: -- that we have, do we really need to be invested in the middle east? rachel: i think that's a good

[laughter] no, no, no, no, no, no. look -- [applause] no, i'm serious. no, here's what i mean. there are some really decent republicans that are out there still. but here's the problem right now of the well known ones, they've got to step up. [laughter] we had chris hamilton, senior vice president of the west virginia coal association, and he blasted the vice president for these very words. >> it comes as no surprise, the former vice president biden has repeatedly demonstrated his disdain for mining and for our coal miners. it's a very honorable profession. our miners are very highly skilled at what they do. they do it with great pride and fiction craigs. it's just so unfortunate that someone in his position would advocate putting, you know, tens of thousands of hard working americans out of work. it's just inconceivable to us.

pete: so you're running for office to expand government-run health care, but then you put so much faith in government that you're going to determine what the jobs of the future are going to be while putting good jobs and industries out of work right now that provide the energy renaissance that we need to beat back, to not rely on the middle east, to beat back china. rachel: right. pete: the whole thing is so fantastical and tied to some futuristic thinking that trusts government -- rachel: it's, actually, i don't think it's futuristic, it's regressive. in communist countries or even some socialist countries, you take this test that determines what you're going to do in the future because you can't go to the university if you don't pass a certain level. i think it's totally regressive. he doesn't just want to end coal, he also wants to i throw executives who work for fossil fuels in jail. maybe board members for fossil fuel companies, i don't know. dean dean that's why it's so great to have a big, strong central government. pete: nailing it right now.

it really sparks this debate about how many troops are in the region and why. kind of adds new life to it, unfortunately, in 2020. pete: joey, speaking of that conversation, i mean, our generation has been there. we've invested for decades. does it, should something like this make us revisit the entire exercise? hey, guys, it's just not something we can ultimately or should affect iran effectively controls the government there, they're storming our embassy, is it -- you know, we don't have to rely on oil, let's just cut ties? >> well, just think about what you just said. should with we reevaluate our involvement in iraq on january 1st, 2020. this is 20 years later, pete. i deployed late in 2007, and and so -- to iraq. and so that is the question, and that is what i love about the trump doctrine which is you take everything from economic policy to foreign trade, you apply pressure to your partners to be a part of this and help put pressure on iran. and even this week we've seen that there are complexities to

that. we're looking at russia and china and saying is this going to become even a proxy war with them in iran. we have to be safe here at home, and i do believe some of our contingents in places like iraq have helped make that happen. obviously, i'm not in the white house, but i think it's been a part of it, for sure. rachel: joey, one more question for you here. "the new york times" had this tweet out, it said hundreds of iraqi mourners tried to storm the united states embassy in baghdad shouting down, down usa in response to deadly american airstrikes this year that killed 25 fighters. what do you think about the neww york times" calling those protesters mourners? >> it's just sad. it's no surprise that the media wants to paint people that would kill us, take my leg ares, take my friends as somehow victims of an oppressive american expansion, and that's the narrative we've dealt with for two decades now. that's what we're looking at there. it's absolutely asinine and, quite honestly, very disrespectful to the hundred

is doing manager, and obviously, president wants to pass it because it's going to continue to be good for the economy. i don't think the china trade deal is going to pass this year, however. i just don't think that the hill has any confidence that china would live up to their side of the bargain, and with hong kong continuing to flare up, i think that one might not happen. dean: all right, your next one x this is a biggie, you say that joe biden, how's that going to -- >> yeah, he's cooked. finish so the dnc made two big changes. they got rid of the power from super delegates and got rid of winner take all primary contests meaning that the states allocate the proportions of votes rather than giving the winner all of them. the thing with joe biden is that in the states that he's winning, he's only winning by a maul margin. and if you look at elizabeth warren and bernie sanders, they're right behind him in most of these states or beating him in the first two. so when you add up the two socialist candidates versus the

one moderate candidate, they overtake him. and so as these delegates amass, you're going to see basically the left wing of the party's going to have more delegates at the end of the day. so when bernie sanders or elizabeth warren drops out, those delegates will consolidate behind one candidate that's not joe biden. pete: you say he's cooked. that's your prediction. >> i think he's got a greater than 50% chance of not being the nominee. and i think that's, obviously, good for president trump. rachel: that leads us to your third prediction which you predict president trump's going to win. >> yeah. i do believe president trump's going to win. and like i said, this isn't about desire, this is just about if you look at the statistical trends plus the facts on the ground right now as they stand. the economy's doing well, if you look at the swing statements in wisconsin and michigan, pennsylvania, ohio, the economy's doing well there. plus if joe biden is not the nominee e and it's either elizabeth warn or bernie sanders, those folks are not polling there well either.

trump is beating them in a lot of these swing state polls. and so if it's not joe biden, which i said is definitely not going to be the case, you have to be a few candidates in warren and sanders who want to fundamentally transform the economy. the economy which is doing historically well for every demographic including the most historically disadvantaged in the country's history are now doing better than they ever have, so to have a candidate that says let's chuck out the economy, start fresh, you know, get rid of everything that's going on that's working right now and replace it with our own ideas, i'm not sure that's what the folks in the midwest and in these swing statements are going to want right now. pete: ron meyer, we're going to hold you to account -- [laughter] you'll be back when they happen or when they don't. >> happy new year, have a great one. rachel: happy new year. pete: all right. new year, new criminal record. pot convictions are going up in smoke today in one state. we'll tell you where, that's coming up. dean: and did you have a little

[laughter] so i'm not so sure i'm going to buy in that this one poll should absolutely taint an entire group of people. rachel: yeah. but you bring up a good point about aoc. she is a product of our university system. one of the things that you suggested to combat some of this indoctrination that's happening at that level of education is possibly sending kids -- i love this idea -- on spring break to caracas, to havana, let them see what it's really like. >> oh, i don't even think -- i think we could set up a whole capitalistic enterprise here to

offer communism for a week and let everybody live under communism for one week to understand what it's all about. garry kasparov, the chess champion, said it very well. it's so nice to see these kids have an opinion about socialism, because once they live under it, they have no opinion. we'll set up an area. you can wait on the bread lines and not have a vote on things that impact finish. rachel: like a communism camp? a communism summer campsome. >> oh, of course, communism camp. oh, absolutely. and bernie and representative ocasio-cortez could be the camp counselors. oh, and there'll be songs until, of course, you sing the wrong song and you go to jail. it's just a dream come true. pete: communism always ends up with camps anyway. millennials say they're likely to vote for a socialist. that number's really high. >> well, it's what happens when you have, again, that media apparatus if others in the political class who try and make it seem cool. listen, if you're wearing a che guevara shirt, you're not cool, you're celebrating a murder, and people don't know that. that is our education system. what is it that we've actually done? what is it that we're actually teaching? communism has no value. socialism has no value. communism has never inspired anything except for a prayer for a quick and painless death, and the people who think that it's cool or have some kind of appeal or the worst lie of all, you know, those other people, that lenin, that stalin, they did it wrong, we're going to do it right. you can't do it right. president trump said at the united nations the problem that it's not been implemented poorly, it's been implementedded
