to beef up their security forces and to keep the demonstrators away from the embassy. there was also a lot of concern within the administration about the iraqi position and all of this. in the past iraqi security forces have kept protesters away from the u.s. embassy in his compound but in this particular case they let them get through. there was a lot of concern and worry about what iraq's government was didn't terms of this incident. he noted president trump talk to the leader of a rock yesterday so now they are pretty please with the way things are going and i think the situation is the escalating. >> the fact that they did not do that job definitely raises a lot of questions. here's what mark esper had to see yesterday in terms of the u.s. moving additional troops to support and protect the compound. approximately 750 soldiers will deployed to the region immediately. additional forces from the irs are you prepared to deploy over the next several days. this deployment is an appropriate and a precautionary action taken in response to

>> fox news alert out of hong kong. protesters are welcoming the new year with tens of thousands of their fellow pro-democracy demonstrators. the gathering was largely peaceful, but as you can see some violence broke out in areas and police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd. those pro-democracy protests began in juneau for a proposed law that it would allow extradition to mainline china of anyone charged with a crime. they have since morphed into a broader movement, demanding democracy once again for hong kong. >> fox news alert for you, north korea dictator warning that his country will soon show a new strategic weapon to the world in the face of what he calls gangster like u.s. sanctions. that is according to north korean state media. they also say the nation will no

6:53 am
large-scale military drills was part of our commitment made to them in times of north korea and their commitment made to us, have they kept their end of the park and far? >> they haven't done a real provocative act, which is the longer-range testing. i think reading this administration, that's pretty clear those are the trigger points. they can yell, they can scream, they can do short range stuff. if they are raising those activities, the u.s. would see that as a breach and say a sign that they are not interested in the diplomatic about the denuclearization. the u.s. is already stated their response to that commitment be more sanctioning come of it, potentially resuming military drills, may be even preemptive military deployments. i think the u.s. would double down. this is a challenge for kim, if he goes back to the old ways, it puts them back in the box it was
6:54 am
in before. >> possibility of more what he calls gangster like u.s. sanctions. perhaps a very important, he has not shut the door. he did not say they would abandon any denuclearization talks altogether. >> i think that's important. that's why the u.s. will judge north korea by their actions. you always have to say this, with north korea and iran, those issues are linked together because of the u.s. a set of the cave to north korea's demand, oh if they're going to pull to the north korea. every day the u.s. doesn't make concessions towards north korea, the uranian say they're being tough on the north koreans, were never going to get an easy deal from them. the administration has to kind of keep an eye on both balls when they think about negotiating. >> also in terms of the world a response to what's going on the embassy in baghdad and the u.s.
6:55 am
as a response to the iranian backed militia they are, north korea no doubt watching that as well. >> they do that a lot. they look at each other and they play off of each other. i don't know if we have any evidence to say kim's rhetoric is orchestrated with iran's provocative action or if the irradiance woke up one day and said kim is giving trumped trouble. we do know that they talk to each other and we do know that they look at how the u.s. treats the other when they take their own policy decisions. >> should they not listen to it this time around. what are you thinking in terms of going into 2020? the possibility of there being some sort of agreement with kim jong un and president trump? >> there's only one person that knows that and that is kim. why would kim make a deal with
6:56 am
trump? he is the only thing that is really changed in the u.s. negotiating position of the last decade. if he didn't think trump would be around to enforce that deal, think a lot of us thought kim would play for time until he saw the trump was going to get reelected. the thing is, you can't guess. we don't really know what kim is thinking. we have to actually wait and see what they do. i think the u.s. has to stay the course. >> i'm sorry to interrupt you but we have to go, we are out of time. thank you so much and we will see what kim does. >> in fox news alert as we will look at this new information coming in and the showdown between the united states and iran. how many u.s. troops are on the ground? u.s. troops firing tear gas to disperse pro-iran protesters gathering outside of the american embassy. after those protesters, some of them stormed the compound yesterday. they were scaling walls, smashing windows, setting fires, following u.s. air strikes that killed 25 iranian backed militia fighters in iraq and syria. the president quickly putting the blame squarely on iran and praising the marines guarding that embassy as he vowed a tragedy from the obama era will not be repeated on his watch. >> they were there instantaneously come as soon as we heard. i use the word immediately, they came immediately. it's in great shape, as you know this will not be a benghazi. benghazi should never have happened. this will never, ever be a benghazi. we have some of our greatest warriors there. >> our man at the state department this morning. i think he is in washington, d.c., back at the bureau monitoring thanks.

good morning rich. >> good morning come as before. just a few blocks away so administration officials say these demonstrators are terrorists in reality, organized and trained by the iranian regime in these protests are part -- fred from the demonstrating against corruption in iraq that's been happening over the past three months. president trump tweeting that iran will be held fully responsible for lives lost or damage incurred at any of our facilities. they will pay a very big price. this is not a warning, it is a threat. happy new year. iran supreme leader shot back in a speech that if iran wanted to confront a country, it would do soak directly. iraq's government is caught between a significant american and iranian presence in their country. senior u.s. officials stressed iraq was responsible for securing american diplomats and facilities. >> urging them to continue to fulfill their responsibility to protect our facility and our people. we are happy to see them deploy forces there to do that.
7:03 am
we continue to ask them to do everything it takes to ensure that facility is protected. >> the iraqi government later deployed federal police and counterterrorism forces to protect the u.s. embassy. mike pompeo says there is no plans to evacuate. the protest began own following prayer services for militia men killed this weekend in american air strikes. the u.s. struck has blocked, and iranian backed military group in syria and iraq. to the military says has blood is responsible for a missile attack friday i'm in the iraqi military base that killed an american contractor. the militia spokesman says they are staying at the embassy. >> we don't care about these aircraft that are flying over the heads, neither do we care about the rumors. this shows a psychological defeat and the mental breakdown the american administration is suffering. >> our pentagon theme is reporting about 4,000 paratroopers have been told to prepare for a possible

7:05 am
iran has brought the economy to a destructive point where they are acting out. we have to continue to show the restraint that president trump has shown, reacted in a appropriate way to their activities like attacking our embassy in iraq. the strikes that happen after our interview over the weekend was an appropriate response. now rescinding troops to our embassy in iraq as well. those are appropriate responses, but in the meantime we need to keep their economy strangled to the point that brings iran back to the table to negotiate a better deal with united states and the jcpoa. that's what president trump has been targeting. because that sparks a question in terms of how much restraint is good. president obama use to argue all the time that he was showing restraint. he said after the cairo and benghazi embassy attacks in 20 tone of dumb like 12. he also sent troops to reinforce embassies all around the
7:06 am
middle east. i was there in cairo as the troops came in and the u.s. took up station there. but he was criticized for showing restraint by republicans and are now praising president trump. >> president obama rewarded arad for their nefarious activities by giving them cash through the jcpoa in negotiating a deal that was in the best issue of around that allowed time to go down the path of obtaining the nuclear weapons that president trump is trying to prevent them from getting. any deal that president trump negotiates with iran moving forward must ensure two things, one that they never get the nuclear capabilities they are seeking. and two, that they stop funding proxy groups and stop continuing their activities is the largest state sponsor of terrorism around the globe. that's what president trump is focusing on. >> the iranians unquestionably have the blood of thousands of americans. u.s. soldiers in iraq as well as
7:07 am
this contractor who was killed in a number of soldiers who were wounded in the past few days after you and i spoke on saturday. here is what morgan ortagus sighed about the president strategic patients. take a listen. >> we have told the iranian regime countless times, do not confuse president trump sick patient with weakness. unfortunately the regime is done that, which is why use of the strikes over the weekend targeted at these iranian militias. >> is that the red line, you kill an american or going to kill 25 of your militia members? >> that's been the approach president trump is taken. >> i'm asking you if you agree with that. >> i agree with the approach. the president has gone up lengths to prevent an endless war in the middle east. at the same time he maintained the national pressure campaign crippling the iranian economy and preventing them from
7:08 am
covering state-sponsored terrorism around the globe. that's the same path we need to take. it's also the same time why the president is sending troops to protect our embassy. >> what do you think the patients should run out on the restraint run out? where is the red line that would demand an overwhelming good military response from the united states? it's not shutting down an american drone, it's not killing a u.s. contractor in targeting troops, where should let overwhelming response come? >> depends on what you mean by overwhelming response. we need to show overwhelming strength as a deterrent. >> but they're not being deterred. may be shipped to the regio, that's why we move troops to the region. i would argue largely that they have been deterred. they have been desktops and significant, we can't turn a blind eye to their directed activities toward our embassy and other places, but at the same time we have shown a strong
7:09 am
response due to sanctions, a strong response to the missile strikes and key strategic places. imagine that's what the administration will maintain. >> you have this tit-for-tat thing come every one breaks in the price of doing something. they target u.s. troops, there militia gets targeted, they attacked the embassy. everyone understands the paradigm. we go back to the mid-1980s when president reagan flipped the paradigm on its head. he was the one that sank a third of the iranian navy in an afternoon and said gee, if you do anything else were going to sink the other two-thirds tomorrow. the iranians didn't do anything for years after that. they didn't attack any embassies, their sponsorship of has blood and other groups went down. where is that kind of response, or should it be there? >> i imagine it's on the horiz horizon. what we have accomplished through these sanctions on the iranian economy has brought them to a point of self-destruction.
7:10 am
they are economy, if there's any economy that is in the tank around the globe it is the iranian economy. because of that, that's dried up funding that they previously sent to groups like hezbollah and other state-sponsored terrorists or epoxies in the region. that's a good thing, leland, and that's why this president has gone out lengths to prevent another war, but at the same time putting destructive measures both economic and military on iran. i imagine that's the same path that this president will take moving forward. in the meantime we need to show american strength. that's why our naval fleet, why our troop presence is important to flexor muscle and prevent any more damaging activity by ron. >> watching video right now so our viewers understand if a u.s. apache gunship helicopter that flew over the embassy after the protests broke up and launch

[cheers and applause] in more than 100 a.d., 190 town halls all across this country. my determination to lead a movement has been forged by the tens of thousands of people who

gone the bernie sanders, the other candidates, joe biden has stayed at the top of the pole end. some pools over 30. i think she's in pretty dire shape and i don't know what my friend to come up brad blakeman says. i think this is a very difficult situation for her. perhaps impossible. >> since he bring it up come up brad what do you think? >> i think she's a weak candidate going into the first primaries and caucuses. were going to see she is going in weakened by campaign cash. always follow the money. not only is she losing in the polls but they are not sending as a kind of money she needs in order to feed her campaign machine. that means, as doug knows, boots on the ground. offices, campaign offices, volunteers. people making telephone calls. she has a plan for everything and i think voters are sinking in. $40 trillion in a programs with

7:15 am
did. clearly that's not how you want to come across as a candidate for the nation's highest office. >> brad, i want to bring up some of these other pools that we have from real clear politics. some of the key states, iowa being the first. elizabeth ward coming in at fourth. new hampshire the average therefore her also down, but a close to joe biden. is up 14.3%. finally the average in south carolina. she does come in second but way behind joe biden impurities at 35% and she's at 16.3%. in terms of these key states, how do you think she stands? obviously we know the statistics right there. it's because she has to win at least one in order to stay viable as we move into the super tuesday races in south carolina. there's bad news for warren but is also bad news for the democrats. in the first few primary states of iowa and new hampshire and nevada, if you have different
7:16 am
winners in three contests on the move into super tuesday, then you've got a we can field. i don't think elizabeth warren is the only one beyond the troubles of performance. >> you were talking about money and the amount of money raised. elizabeth warren actually lowering their expectations for the amount of money that she expects to raise in the fourth quarter. i think she went down to 20 from 24.4 there she raised in the last quarter. andrew yang, his name not on any of those real clear politics average is that we just looked out, but here's what he had to say about the amount of money he's been able to raise. >> we have the resources that go all the way to the spring and ride into milwaukee. i'm an entrepreneur, i've seen multimillion dollars organizations go from nothing but an idea to number one on the country and that is exactly what's happening with this campaign. it feels very familiar.
7:17 am
>> doug, what do you think? >> i think he is exaggerating a bed. there is a small sliver of the democratic party and democratic supporters who support a tech entrepreneur who is anti-systemic, has a new idea in providing a guaranteed annual income to people. i think he appeals there, but i think he raised three and a half million the last week of december or thereabouts. it is clear there is some support there but whether that's enough to go all the way to milwaukee, i have my doubts. >> we see them drinking champagne nail that was from his new year's celebration that he had. his grade at crowd serving among other things, but it will not them all the way? >> it will not. it's easy to campaign before a vote is cast. once the voters make their choices in the early states, the also-rans will drop out quickly.
7:18 am
it's because the people have spoken. they know who their choices are likely to be and it's hard to sustain the kind of attention that they have had once the voting starts. >> i liked how you put the outcome of the also-rans. the amount of money being raised by these guys are just phenomenal. thank you for joining us and happy new year. >> same to you. >> we've been covering this over the past couple of weeks, the attacks on the faithful, whether in churches, synagogues, anti-semitic attacks in the streets of new york, there is now calls for increased security at houses of worship. is that enough? >> plus the trump administration cracking down on teens and vaping. the latest effort to ban most flavored e-cigarettes is up next. >> one of the things we will be talking about is age. age is a big factor. were going to be coming up with a number. i think we have to come up with an odd number at some point so we will be doing that. right at home caregiver.m j

7:34 am
us to redeploy our troops out of there. here's the key thing for americans to understand. first, there is no threat to american security. their primary benefactor is baghdad. they were sent there in 2014 at the height of the isis people at the defense of the government of baghdad. i do gets time for us to come home because all we are doing is having targets putting on our back and it's him creasing the threat to our troops. >> earlier we spoke to dan hoffman, who is fox news contributor, he talked about iran's influence in all of this. listen. >> they hold a lot of influence. it's not over yet, the united states should be doubling down on our diplomacy with the government of iraq and finding appropriate iraqi leaders with whom to work. make no mistake, the battle for iraq's future carries on and it's a great challenge for us. >> you mentioned you believe we should pull the troops out right now we have approximately 5,000
7:35 am
u.s. troops there now. >> that's correct. to his point, you also see just how chaotic it is. prior to all of this, these sanctions and all these people rising up against the united states, there was a great deal of protests for months against the president of baghdad because of the iranian influence. that's probably one of the most effective way to move iraq away from the iranian sphere of influence by their own people who are tired of that. we don't need to ride the military backstop and increase the risk we might have a clash with iran because that would not serve our interests at all. >> 11 attacks and just last two months. that's in addition to the u.s. contractor who was killed on friday. in terms of who these protesters are come a lot of people upside come a lot of veterans today and you had one of the media
7:36 am
referring to these protesters as iraqi mourners. here's what morgan ortagus from the state department had to say but to these protesters are earlier. >> this was not protesters, these were terrorists that are organized, trained, and equipped by the iranian regime and threats to the embassy. we went to iraq over the summer to address. we actually went on order departure for a while at the u.s. embassy in baghdad. >> your thoughts on that? >> they probably are mourning the loss of their personnel because they are for paramilitary units that are around back. these are iraqi citizens, they are not iranian citizens and that's part of the complications because we have attack on iraqi citizens that are in the control of that iraqi government.
7:37 am
it's a real chaotic situation and we need to withdraw our groups and not get in the middle of all the stuff. >> would that put those people left behind in further danger? >> a few referring to the people at the u.s. embassy we actually need to maintain a very robust gear to stefan that's beyond question. i'm talking about the 5,000 that is better on the country that does not thing for american interests we need to reduce our strategic risk. >> that's something that president trump is campaigned on. he talked about bringing our troops home in places like this all over the country, including the world. >> honestly as we head into 2020 people are going to be paying more attention to that. the last thing you want to see if they'll be far worse than anything we find in the number of years and i think trump's right to us back from that.
7:38 am
