>> this week a texas parishioner has been hailed a hero for stopping a gunman who opened fire during services last sunday but apparently not everyone sees it that way. ainsley: new usa today op-ed, unfortunately the split-second heroism has been turned into pr tool by advocates but we know nothing 6 parishioners who drew handguns and that's terrifying. brian: really? dana loesch. i've never seen someone look at an incident like that and see something negative of people being able to defend themselves. >> yeah, no, and happy roaring 20's to you all, new decade, it's insane that this column is -- it's 2020, we have columns like this being published. i read this piece last night and
5:26 am
i was mystified as to how anybody could think that law-abiding people simply protecting themselves could be terrifying, i think it's terrifying that looks like it's another attempt by legacy media to try to find out information about individuals and it's none of their business, look, the fact that you had in the video that we unfortunately have due to the fact that the church was life streaming their services at the time that this awfulness took place, the fact that you had all of the other individuals, what was it like 5 to 7 other people who were lawfully carrying arms and who drew their arms in anticipation of having to neutralize a threat that no one else fired, everyone else held their ground and all acted as they should have, demonstrates some level of skill and training, perhaps they were trained by the hero jack harris himself but that completely was not even mentioned in this column and they say it's a pr stunt, no, further evidence of fact that gun saved lives and if we are going to have a
5:27 am
meaningful discussion about lives and saving lives and you cannot omit the fact that -- brian: dana, how many other attacks won't happen if people know you're armed inside, that's the point of arming teachers, you don't know what teacher is armed, perhaps i will pick another school, that's the school, maybe i'm not going to go into that church in texas because the law passed last year allowing people to carry a gun into congregations. >> right, i will tell you something else, by the way, the second time that a mass casualty incident that lives have been saved because someone acted, i spoke with steven and everybody remembers him, hero who stopped worst massacre in texas history, southerland springs, i spoke with steven on the radio show and mentioned that during the course of the investigation that
5:28 am
this particular murderer had looked at going to another church but that there were armed ' re parishioners or hired security at this church and that was a deterrence to this particular criminal, to the murder, look, no one is sitting here saying go arm every man, women and child because that ignores the law of the matter and that comes into play but what we are seeing is that there's a real reason why people in houses of faith feel the need to defend themselves, if it's not jewish people, it's christian people, people of faith are under attack and we have every right to defend ourselves by the way without the media casting dispersions on our character. i find it terrifying that someone would think it's bad that other lives are worth defending by good people with the skill set to do so. >> what's the alternative, what would they prefer? a church that we have all been there before and the choirs is up there singing and the preacher preaching and somebody
5:29 am
pulls a gun, i want somebody in there to defend all of us that are innocent. >> amen to that, ainsley, and thankfully in texas we have the ability to do so because the state affirms our right and recently -- ainsley: no wonder so many people are moving there. >> exactly, i carry in my church and we have a plan in place in my church and any my area so god bless texas. brian: policemen especially license today carry guns and volunteering to be ushers, filling holy water, do security without letting anybody know, you don't know they are there but they know they are there. dana, thanks so much. >> that's right. steve: thank you very much. ainsley: pot is now legal in the state of illinois and people waiting in the cold just to get their hands on it. brian: among the first in line

steve: with 2020 new laws on the book. brian: good flews for the people of illinois, perhaps, recreational marijuana is now for sale in the state. ainsley: hundreds of people as you can see waited outside when it's cold at the dispensaries across the state as the drug became legal on new year's day. steve: all right, live outside pot dispensary in chicago where people are lining up to light up, it's not just regular folks, high officials have been getting some pot there as well legally now. >> as close as you can get to the top of the state, illinois became 11th state in the nation to legalize pot, people of chicago showed that there's no problems with demand when its comes to legal marijuana, people started camping out on new year's eve, they waited hours and hours in line, the line stretched around city block, many dispensaries had trouble meeting demand, limited purchases closed early.
5:35 am
one of the people first in line as you mentioned lieutenant government of illinois, juliana straten. as the laws went into effect governor dismissed some 11,000 cases in illinois. >> the war on cannabis has destroyed families, it has filled jails and prisons with nonviolent offenders, it has disproportionately affected black and brown communities. >> big motivator is revenue, there's a prediction that legal pot can generate $500 million for state that cannot balance budget of pension obligation for the people waiting in line the weed they compared it yesterday to end of prohibition. >> how does it feel to be the first buyer? >> it's better than christmas when i got my barbie dream house. this is really exciting, this is

wonderful. >> and still illegal to take your pot across state lines, people who drove from wisconsin to light up, you still can't take it back into wisconsin but, of course, always illegal to drive your pot into wisconsin, back to new york. >> do they actually check to make sure -- oh, you live in madison, we will not sell you any? >> no, they weren't and i think that they want to encourage some marijuana tourism so they get people from out of state, the idea is that they'll be here to buy hotel rooms, stuff to eat as they do and that's the idea, generate revenue. steve: all right, mike tobin live in chicago where legal to buy recreational pot at dispensaries. brian: where it's always cold in the winter, not like us, we got a breather today. ainsley: i think it's 40-degrees here today. let's stand it over to jillian. jillian: good morning to you, to

tears. ainsley: 40-degrees, brian corrected me, it's not. janice: 50-degrees, i hear we are doing bull riding you and i. ainsley: we are. [laughter] janice: what's your name, my friend? >> ryan. janice: where you're from? >> virginia. janice: is this your first trip to new york? >> yeah. >> happy sweet sixteen. temperatures in the 30's, 50-degrees, for january 2nd, that's pretty awesome, we are dealing with potential for showers, thunderstorms maybe some severe storms along the gulf coast, watch for the threat for large hail, damaging winds, isolated tornadoes for parts of louisiana and mississippi, for the rest of the country you know pretty warm, we love it, look at

5:45 am
2020 race heats up the question is how could this impact presidential election by the new residents bringing the politics with them and could texas potentially turn into a swing state or there i say a blue state, here to react tom, tom, why are they leaving and are the democrats or republicans leaving texas? >> brian, great to see you and hope you had a happy new year. listen, california 7 year's in a row had 7 people leave than move in, california is becoming a place for public employee unions, the rich and the poor, but the middle class is getting especially high school -- hollowed out and californians are leaving for 2 reasons, i speak about this in my book, red state--blue state divide, the
5:46 am
republicans are leaving the state because frankly they are tired of the politics of it, it used to be they went from la to riverside, now they keep going to arizona and to texas, you mentioned 86,000, a lot of my republican friends left included former state republican party chairman, so what's the impact on texas, well, keep this in mind, in 2016 president trump beat hillary clinton 52-43 but you remember 2018 beto o'rourke, that race ted cruz just got over 50% and beto got 48, the democrats want texas so bad because somehow they got texas, they might not lose the white house again. brian: the bigger question, so conservatives say there's no place for me here, i can't get my voice heard, in new york you have people going to florida, they wonder who are the people who are leaving, i heard in texas, they always say we lost, republicans say we lost austin,
5:47 am
we haven't lost the state, what do you hear? >> yeah, that's the way it is, you know, the big cities all over the country except for san diego are all democrat, they want us all in cities so they control it, they want to get rid of electorate college so cities can vote them in. texas is a different story, a lot of republicans go there, it's still a mix bag but they are pouring money, the democrats are into the state and republicans need to keep an eye on this, the democrats are better at the business of elections than republicans, republicans talk policy, democrats talk policy and voter registration, so texas will be in play over the next 15 to 2 years and if the democrats take that away from the republicans, then the republicans will have an awful time trying to win the white house. brian: very good point. tom, we will see how that looks, a lot of people say it has a lot to do with ted cruz and less to do -- >> could be. >> less to do how texas is changing a you see beto o'rourke did not have any national
5:48 am
momentum, he just had a lot of money. tom, thanks so much for your time, appreciate it. >> see you soon. brian: 13 minutes before the top of the hour, next professional bull rider showing us some tricks of their trade on something that isn't quite likable but looks like one but first with the power vested in me i like to check in with sandra to find out what's coming up on her show, not bull riding, correct? >> not exactly, brian, ainsley, steve, welcome back to all of you, happy new year, tensions are rising in the middle east, iranian-backed protestors withdrawing from embassy compound in baghdad, a story we have been following for days, 2 days after 2 days of clashes, hundreds of troops have been deployed there, how will the u.s. respond from here, what is the white house strategy? secretary of defense mark esper will be our guest this morning, join us live one hour from now, that and more breaking news on thursday morning, the first day of the new year, join us live

you taught yourself how to do this watching youtube videos? >> yes, ma'am. it made sense to look it up on youtube and learn from there and a lot of people helped -- >> what's the hardest part that people might not know? >> i kind of feel like it's a mental game, mental game that people don't know. after you learn how to ride bulls you know what you're supposed to do and find the courage and other things like that. [laughter] steve: what's going on with that technique? [laughter] steve: tell us about -- ainsley: what do i need to do?
5:54 am

[cheers and applause] >> something that we can't explain and something that you have to be in our shoes to fill. it's a whole different experience. when you hear the crowd and the energy of the animal, it's just unreal.
