11:00 pm
with our intelligence community. and i've got to tell you, it does feel as if president trump did the right thing in protecting the united states with amazing precision. >> jason, it's an amazing night. i'm privileged an honored to sit in for laura ingraham. this is "the ingraham angle." happy new year. from new york. i know a lot is going on and we're doing to bring you up to speed. trump is trouncing democrats inn key swing states. a new poll tells a different tale. scott whereas and john mclaughlin are here to explain what is really going on. a how serious are liberals about eradicating anti-semitism? we will have the hot debate. candice owens is here. joe piscopo on hollywood's bizarre new year's resolutions. don't miss that. a u.s. air strike killing the leader of iran's revolutionary guard that approved the new year's eve attack on the u.s. embassypp in baghdad.
11:01 pm
fox news david spunt is live with the latest. >> the u.s. claiming responsibility for this attack. i'm going to read this statement from the pentagon in just a moment. major general suleimani was in charge of iran's qud force and he was killed at the direction of president trump after the air strike hit his convoy. near baghdad international airport. suleimani joined the armed forces in 1979. the year of the iranian revolution. he played a major rule in arming shiite malitias that killed u.s. troops during the iraq war. also killed was the number 2 of iran backed malitias known as the pmf. iraq state tv reporting seven people were killed. i want to read part of the statement from the pentagon. it says?--.
11:02 pm
>> raymond, this comes amid tensions between the united states and iran. a new years eve iranian protester stood outside the u.s. embassy in baghdad. things got so out of control, president trump ordered 750 soldiers in the region to deal with the unrest. now just today secretary of defense mark esper said the game has changed and we're prepared to do whatever is necessary to defend our personnel and our interests and our partners inde this region. this comment came before the rocket attacks several hours ago. it is noted also part of this statement i'm looking here right now, it says "the united states
11:03 pm
will can't to take all necessary action to protect our people and our interests wherever they are around the world." this coming from the pentagon just about ten minutes ago, raymond. st thank you for the update. joining me now is house minority whip, steve scalise. and fox news national security and foreign affairs analyst, gentlemen, thanks for being with me.an on this incredible night. what can you tell us about this air strike? obviously the u.s. ordered it. what does it mean and tell us about this general. this is a man responsible for 17% of the u.s. deaths in iraq.i go on. fill us in. >> yes, absolutely right, raymond. what happened tonight is stunning, this is a preemptive national security strike by the united states against a network headed by suleimani who is in charge of iran operations in four countries at least w not beyond. who was preparing according to
11:04 pm
reports a series of attacks against u.s. military and others and coordinating with the heads of pro iran malitias in iraq, lebanon and other parts as well. so what we have done tonight, what the country has done after the orders of the president and the commanders, was to save american lives and interests and allies in the region from what was prepared by these organizations. >> now, this suleimani, he is a spy master. a coordinator on so many levels. he was designated as a terrorist. so for years?-- here's the question. why did it take so long? i heard the obama administration had blocked any assassination attempts on this general. >> we knew that for eight years, for the obama administration we knew that from 2009 to 2016. there was one goal of u.s. foreign policy.
11:05 pm
i'm not building something. it was there. t we saw it. most of the actions against the iranians, most of the actions against the iranians were delained because of the architecture of the iran deal. we were negotiating with iranian leadership. so we're not going to be shooting right and left unless it wasness. -- necessary. now we have a different policy. that policy to make sure that. the iranians and allies are not going to preempt against us and tape out american lives. >> steve scalise, i have to ask you, fox news has confirmed that there was a banner outside the u.s. embassy when it was attacked the other day and it said suleimani is our leader. it was written on the windows by the iran backed malitiamen in baghdad. at the u.s. embassy. does this draw a line, a connection between suleimani and the attack of our embassy? is this the right move?
11:06 pm
>> raymond, this has been building a long time. president trump took incredibly decisiveasn action to take out s head of this organization. irgc has been a bad organization. suleimani is responsible for the deaths of over 600 of our men and women in uniform. this guy has been one of the major terrorists, most brutal terrorists in the world, this is on the same level of, you know, you can go down the line by al-baghdadi, the most recent, even when you look at where this ouranks, this is right up theres one of the major attacks. taking out one of the worst terrorists that has been a threat to the united states clearly as the pentagon has said, this was a defensive action. they were seeing other things getting ready to happen. it wasn't just taking out somebody for what happened at the embassy, but also?-- he was probably getting ready to direct other attacks against americans. so this is a terrorist who has been responsible for the deaths
11:07 pm
of 600 plus americans and probably getting ready to try to nddo more. he won't be able to kill anybody else because he's been taken out.e' president trump i think has sent a strong message to iran and any other terrorists around the world, this is serious business. if you come after america we're coming after you with overwhelming strength. >> i want you to explain the connection between hezbollah and iran. this organization was working with american forces a few months ago. to stamp out isis. >> that's the drama. how are you going to explain it? the mother organization is the quds force headed by suleimani. that mother organization has sub organizations and malitias in iraq, lebanon, syria. but in iraq, it has a high density of organizations one of which is hezbollah.
11:08 pm
that's true, the pro iranian malitias because they're under the umbrella of the iraqi government, but because of this legality that theygo have, theye been fighting isis but not because of us. not because of the iraqi people, which they have killed the past aumany weeks now. 700 iraqis have been killed by that malitia. not just americans in the past and other arabs but including iraqis. that organization has received orders to target americans. that's aaq red line. >> i'm going to open this up to congressman scalise. we're going to bring in andy biggs. congressman on the house judiciary cann he. is there a concern?-- particularly to the congressman is. there a concern the last few years we have trained fighters in syria this later turned against our forces and seems we're seeing the same thing here. we train this group, they helped us fight isis and then they suddenly turn their guns and training on our troops. are you concerned that we're
11:09 pm
moving into that same position again or in that place? i'll start with congressman biggs. >> that's always been a concern. we did the same thing with afghanistan. some worked with osama bin laden against the united states later. this is always part of the context within the mideast, part of the real problem that we have. it'sea so complicated. when dr.ferris starts talking about yes, this group wasig fighting against isis but they weren't fighting for the u.s., that's part of what we see. we see the overlay of different groups. it's impossible to sort it out because of the way they structure it and layer upon this one at theut other. >> one more question. congressman scalise. what can we to at this point?
11:10 pm
we spent a trillion dollars in iraq to turn it into iowa so we were told. it's not that. you have the security guard there. that's who allowed these group of protesters to invade our embassy. t it was the iraq he government. any concern that we don't have the hold there that we thought we had after all of this time and blood? >> we have seen that slipping away. you've seen a stronger iranian influence. president trump pushed isis out of the middle east by and large but other actors come. in iran is one of them. they're trying to take away the freedom of iraq. suleimani is one of those people leading attacks against not just americans but anybody that seeks freedom in that region.
11:11 pm
and he's gone. >> congressmen, stay put. how do you think the iranians respond and something that pulls us typener the middle east? -- deeper in the middle east? something i know the president doesn't want. >> the iranian regime is in a state of shock. they've seen the decaptation of the strategic leadership againss the americans. what is it that they're going to do later? they have to make a choice between escalating?-- every time they escalate, they see the might of america that has changed bigesca time. or they will see we're doing to seek a cease fire, rethink the issues. both are possible. let me make one point that you asked about. basically in iraq, the malitias are hated by the population. the situation in iraq is better than what we generally think. the majority of the iraqi youth, shiia, the majority of the sunnis almost all of the kurds are against iran. so we are in a much better position especially after the elimination of that threat. >> this is certainly an evil man
11:12 pm
responsible for at least 600 servicemen's death and the mastermind of many plots in the middle east. thank you nor being here walid. congressmen, i want to turn to impeachment. it's been more than two weeks. sinceac the house voted to impeh president trump. speaker nancy pelosi still hasn't sent the articles to the senate. there's new questions. is this just a ploy to add to the insanity with more articles of impeachment?is t >> the house has the sole responsibility under the constitution for impeachment to send over the articles. of course, in ensuing weeks, we may have additional evidence out there through investigative reporting and other disclosures that would justify sending it at a later time. >> congressman scalise, what is the backup plan here? let's say pelosi never sends them over. what is the plan? >> she's been on a fishing expedition since the day they began.n.
11:13 pm
al green just said that it was before he was elected president that they wanted to take him out. so if you look at where we are now, they had no case, there was no crime committed. but they impeached him anyway. they don't knowmm what to do wih it. they thought public opinion would be with them. they thought they would find crimes. maybe she's hoping something falls out of the sky. this willl have a bad ending for nancy pelosi and for every democrat that voted for impeachment and will have to go back home to the people that said what did you do the last two years, yound spent your time carrying out a political vendetta instead of doing things for the families. >> cnn published a new op-ed. it's the case for letting senators vote secretly on trump's fate.e. the author and professor robert alexander from northwestern university argues a secret ball lot would give the
11:14 pm
senate what alexander hamilton described in confidence to preserve uninfluenced the necessary impartiality to render a fair trial. are they so desperate to block transparency on impeachment? is this a possibility? >> it's not a real possibility. you're right, raymond. they're so nervous letting the truth come out. that's why we started off, remember, in theth secret chambs of the house with adam schiff and closed door meetings. so most of us that were ultimately going to vote on this didn't get a chance to hear it. they do not want this to come forward. so i think the alternative will be, i've got to call on my friends in the senate, particularly lindsey graham, that i need to have a few witnesses come in to bring forward some of the evidence that the democrats suppressed, which further undermines their case. >> congressman scalise, i can talk about impeachment another

11:16 pm
will use them against good innocent people. i if you don't have somebody to counter somebody with a gun, it's not going to end well. s in my case, i wouldn't be here if there wasn't somebody to counter that shooter in the case of the shooting at these the church that we saw. it was people multiple times that countered the shoot or with a firearm. people that were trained. they knew what they were doing. you saw that in the texas church. thank goodness t you had heros that had firearms and knew how to use them to defend innocent people. otherwise, there would have been more casualties. >> congressman biggs and scalise, thanks for being here. i'll tell you why trump is a proxy for those lacking a voice and that will help him in 2020. we'll have an amazing debate. stay there. when we started our business
