democrats are he pouncing on the president's move. let's begin right away. what do we know about the strike itself? >> overnight the united states assassinated the leader of the revolutionary guard qasem soleimani. new responses from the iranian regime. the great nation of iran will take revenge for what he is calling a heinous crime. iran's supreme leader saying there will be a 3-day period of morning. qasem soleimani a very close friend of the ayatollah and it is going to draw a major response from across the region. we talked a lot yesterday about the united states and iraq possibility of direct military confirmation was we entered a new phase of the conflict in the middle east.

we have seen iranian proxies operating against western infrastructure and today united states making the decision. two vehicles, and the drone strike taking out the leader of the revolutionary guard and an iraqi military force. what many refer to as the second most powerful man in iran when it comes to foreign policy. qasem soleimani had control over different militias, this is one of the biggest development since the iraq war. hard to understate, we hear politicians in washington, republicans and democrats some praising donald trump and some slamming him for this decision. the reality is we do not know what will happen next in the middle east but at this hour us allies such as israel are providing a variety of

possibilities and in northern israel a very big concern the iranian proxies such as hezbollah could retaliate but all options on the table. we have entered a new phase of this conflict is overnight the united states made the decision to take up the leader of iran's revolutionary guard qasem soleimani. heather: any word about what is going on at the embassy in terms of security or anyone still there? >> reporter: the us embassy in baghdad is urging all americans to leave the country immediately. we don't often see these warnings but a new warning came from the embassy telling people if they are in iraq -- the warning today telling americans to leave by any means possible by air, by land. there are very few places americans will be to leave by land so this is a difficult

situation if you are an american on the ground in iraq but the state department saying you should leave immediately. one other point of note when it comes to the state department. earlier today we saw a tweet by mike pompeo talking about iraqis in the streets dancing and celebrity the death of qasem soleimani. this is a win for many iraqis protesting the government throughout the past year. they have been upset with iranian influence in the middle east so this tweet pointing out there are some iraqis operating the death of this iranian military leader, an important voice as all of this is mixed up and a difficult situation moving forward but we can tell you not only the united states but it allies in the region preparing for the possibility of an iranian retaliation and this morning is not if iran will retaliate but where and when. carley: thank you very much, appreciate the coverage.

who exactly is qasem soleimani? the history of iran's most powerful general. >> reporter: qasem soleimani was known as the shadow commanded because of the long shadow he cast outside iran's borders without anyone knowing much about him. here's what we know about him. the 62-year-old was designated a terrorist by the us in 2005 but he has been the leader of iran's delete intelligence wing since 1998. the special force quietly operated iranian proxy campaigns made of 20,000 militia fighters across the middle east and some analysts say he was attempting to spread iran's islamic revolution from baghdad to damascus and all the way to beirut where they would be considered a direct threat to israel. qasem soleimani is responsible for killing 600 american troops

there reach extends to europe, they tried to kill the saudi ambassador in the united states, seeking to conduct that operation. we are on high alert and working with partners overseas. to shore up our defenses and share intelligence on iranian threats. qasem soleimani heather: he was planning to attack american diplomats and servicemembers in iraq and throughout the region, the united states will continue to take all necessary action to protect our people and interests wherever they are around the world, what you were saying in terms of possible retaliation. do you think allies beyond the middle east were aware of what is going to happen? >> i'm sure this operation was kept in the highest level of secrecy and district need to know basis.

that is important for the success of this sort of operation. what is key going forward is how this impacts iran. there will be a succession, tracking who that person is, someone with less experience and less gravitas but he will be replaced and there will be questions about the extent to which i rgc will operate against, those are high collection requirements for us and there's an impact inside iraq because we reportedly killed mohandas, leader of the so-called proxy mobilization units. heather: not a lot has been said about his death. he planned the 1983 bombing of the us embassy in kuwait two month after the beirut barracks bombing. >> they are designated terrorists for good reason.

stay firm against iranian the various influence and an opportunity for us to continue under the direction of mike pompeo and his talented team calling out iran for their pernicious behavior in the middle east. heather: this was not just involving the us contractor last friday. there was a series of attacks on oil tankers in the strait of worms, the us drone it was shot down by iran. we waited patiently and now this is happening. >> we have argued -- we have waited since 2003. qasem soleimani has been directing attacks against others in iraq. and as noted, for us persons and countries.

there's an idea and qasem soleimani had it coming to him. i would caution anyone about rushing to judgment. the administration will provide a lot of background to congress now that the operation is over. we will see where we go from here. heather: they were not made aware of this attack but i want to ask you, this will be the first question on their mind, are we going to war with iran? >> we have arguably been in proxy war with iran for a decade where there proxy militias have been targeting and killing our people and we have been defending ourselves. the only hope of deterring future action whether it leads to something greater or not is an open question. i have no doubt we are putting out serious messages to iran we suggest the exercise restraint.

todd pyro live in studio is democrats slam the commander-in-chief are keeping congress in the dark. >> reporter: with reaction from democrats starting with joe biden who issued the following statement. qasem soleimani supported terror and sewed chaos. none of that negates the fact that this was a hugely escalatory move in an already dangerous region. the demonstration statement says it's goal is to deter future attacks by iran but this action almost certainly will have the opposite effect, donald trump tossed a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox and he owes the american people an explanation of the strategy and the plan to keep save our troops and embassy personnel, their interests at home and abroad. bernie sanders tweeting this. when i voted against the war in iraq in 2002 i feared it would lead to greater destabilization of the region. that fear unfortunately turned

out to be true. the us has lost approximately 4500 brave troops, tens of thousands have been wounded and we spent trillions. andrew yang tweeting war with iran is the last thing we need and is not the will of the american people. we should be acting to de-escalate tensions and protect our people in the region. cory booker echoing similar sentiments. >> qasem soleimani has american blood on his hands but we have to look at the larger strategic situation in that area. we have a president who had a failure in his iranian policy, has no strategic plan and made the region less stable and less safe. >> bill diblasio publicly expressing concern about repercussions throughout the city saying he spoke with the nypd, from retaliation. asks for what the president had to say this is his tweet, simply an american flag.

heather: joining us with expert insight, jim henson, we appreciate it, there are some folks saying we need to say a lot more to them. in terms of this response and what we have done with these airstrikes specifically as we just heard todd saying, many democrats say this will send us down the path to war. what do you think of that? >> if we are on a path to war, iran put us on the path to war long ago. they have been conducting attacks and killing americans for a long time. the bottom line is attack on the us embassy is an invasion of us soil, a serious act of war. the idea that we would not retaliate to that when we can identify and take out the guy who planned that and a number of other attacks is absurd. this is the democrats grandstanding politically and

they are the ones putting us more at risk. heather: when we say all options are on the table in terms of when we respond, in terms of retaliation they are calling for from iran, what will happen next? >> a danger they will make another attack on a tanker. i don't know if that was their goal before but stopping that should be another defensive measure we could take. the navy serves no other purpose than to destabilize the region by threatening shipping in the gulf. right now we plan one strike against the navy bases and it is time to execute one unless the iranian's come to their senses and stop their actions. >> we mentioned this is not the first incident in response to the death of us contractor last friday. there were attacks on oil

tankers in the strait of hormuz and shooting down the us drone. i want to ask about this. who would stand with iran? >> there is a hashtag trending on twitter of world war iii which is absurd. iran does not have many friends and none of them are crazy enough to stand up in a shooting war against the united states. russia is not going to do it, china is not going to do it. they will not stand against the us and neither will turkey. they have nobody who will join them in a war against the us and they are not at this point likely to do that. they will hit us in places there are soft targets and we need to make sure they pay a large enough price that that no longer seems like a good idea to them. heather: i want to go to this response from iran's foreign minister. this act, the us act of international terrorism, targeting and assassinating qasem soleimani, the most effective force fighting isis is extremely dangerous and a

foolish escalation, the us bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism. what about that? in terms of our allies in the region, what will their response be today, an act of international terrorism to kill a terrorist? >> a massive case of projection going on. everything he said is what they have been doing for a long time. the idea that the us would tolerate an attack on the us embassy would put our personnel all around the world at risk if we show we are not willing to defend so we did the right thing. it is absolutely not terrorism to kill a guy with that much blood on his hands. it is the right thing to do. the world is a better place without qasem soleimani and we will deal with the consequences and hopefully this will embolden the iranian protesters at home. maybe it is time for the molochs to go.

heather: this moves us from a proxy war to direct military confrontation. we heard some democrats, cory booker saying this shows a failure in donald trump's iranian policy, todd pyro was giving his report. respond to those things. what does it mean that we have moved to direct military confrontation and does this show a failure in donald trump's iranian policy? >> there is no way you can say that we started the war. they have been conducting provocation, attacking and killing americans and as we said invaded us soil. iran did this, they brought it upon themselves. the idea that somehow we are the ones to blame for that, that it is a failure now part shows lack of understanding of the mueller's goals overall. they want to be regional hegemons, push the us out of the region and they are willing to do what they can including

attacking us directly to achieve that. we did the right thing, responded properly and whatever they do next they are going to regret it. heather: what is the best outcome? >> the best possible outcome is the iranian people rise up and throw the muellers out. to start with the iraqis are in the streets celebrating this as you show the video because many iraqis are sick of iran after the line influence, trouble all over the region in syria, lebanon, yemen. there are plenty of places where iran is doing damage and all the people who are suffering can now say at least the us stood up and took out the guy who was responsible for their pain and suffering. maybe it is time for all the people of the region to say iran needs a new set of leadership. heather: we certainly appreciate it. the time is 20 minutes until the top of the hour. as jim mentioned, iraq dancing

weighing in his ryan morrow. thank you for joining us on this breaking news day. what can you tell us about the iraqi leader and others who were killed? >> reporter: the additional point i would make about qasem soleimani is it is not just about iranian and hezbollah that he was involved in. iran has an important branch within iran the teams up with the iranian revolutionary guard corps that qasem soleimani was part of. that means qasem soleimani was one of the top collaborators with al qaeda. as for the other individual who was killed, mahanta's, he was also a terrorist going back to the 1983 bombings in kuwait where he targeted the american and french embassies there and is a high-level figure in iranian backed militias in iraq so if you want to have a day where there is peace, we don't have to be in baltimores all the time these two guys had to go. heather: he was an iraqi militia

commander who had been spotted outside the us embassy in baghdad earlier this week. in terms of the group itself give us a little more background on the group. the quts. >> they as a unit in the revolutionary guard corps, the most loyal force of uranium regime that keeps them in power. they are known for shooting students to keep the regime in power. the iranian people absolutely detest them and especially qasem soleimani. you have in the middle east they are cheering what happened but in the united states you have progressives talking as if world war iii is going to happen in failing to understand there have been many times they have cried foul about that in the past. heather: what do you think the response will be in the middle east? >> the iranian regime does not want a broader conflict in the

united states. we taught them a listen. we are willing to kill your top commanders that previously we chose not to and penetrating your ranks with spies and intelligence gathering as never before. you try to attack us we will know about it and stop you and contain it. that is terrifying to the iranian regime, militias and terrorist groups they sponsor. they are more panicked than ever. the regime does believe they have to respond to some degree to save face but they don't want it to spiral out of control. my big fear is some element of the iranian network in the united states which we have exposed with the clarion project will act on its own or on the orders of uranium regime forces to carry out an attack on american soil of a small nature which is possible. heather: i wanted to ask you about that, one of the many concerns people have when they wake up and hear about this. what is the likelihood of that
