"fox and friends first" continues with breaking news right now. goodbye. jillian: you are watching "fox and friends first" on friday morning. rob: iraq promising retaliation after donald trump executes airstrikes killing revolutionary guard general qasem soleimani. qasem soleimani green lit this week's attack on the american embassy in baghdad, 15 miles away overnight in a us rocket strike at baghdad airport. jillian: we have team coverage with iran's new warning. rob: qasem soleimani breaking down who qasem soleimani was and why his death is so important. jillian: democrats already counting on the president's move. let's begin in jordan with the latest. what can you tell us?

>> reporter: overnight the united states assassinating the leader of iran's revolutionary guard qasem soleimani. this is a major development in the region. we talked a lot yesterday about iran and the united states preparing for a direct military confrontation. this conflict has entered a new phase. after last night, drone strike targeted a car outside baghdad international airport that qasem soleimani was riding in. additionally a senior official in a top iranian militia targeted and killed outside the airport last night. today iran vowing to respond, rouhani tweeting out the great nation of iran will take revenge for what he is calling a heinous crime. the ayatollah implementing a 3 day morning period vowing to respond. qasem soleimani responsible for a number of proxies in places like lebanon, the gaza strip, iraq and syria so his death is a

major escalation and something the united states is going to have to prepare for the region. the us of the in baghdad has told all-americans to leave iraq immediately, take a car out by land or any other means possible, they are warning of kidnappings and possible retaliation today by iran or its factions in the region. us secretary of state mike pompeo tweeting out a video of iraqis dancing because many iraqis have been protesting in the streets of baghdad and other key iraqi cities because of the iranian influence in their country, they actually ousted the prime minister who is sitting there in a ceremonial role but all of this coming to a head last night as the united states did make that decision to assassinate qasem soleimani, the top leader of iran's revolutionary guard, responsible for a number of proxies across the middle east. now we wait to see if and when the iranian to respond. experts not saying it is a

iranian's are facing not only in iran but neighboring iraq. you will see a number of civilians pressuring governments to respond and when you look at the response in iraq there have been calls by the iraqi prime minister to push out american forces, there are 5000 american troops on the ground fighting the islamic state. there are new calls to ensure america respects the sovereignty of iraq after they carried out two key military events over the past week. last sunday targeting the proxy in iraq, hezbollah related group that killed 25 of its fighters and last night the assassination of the top commander in iran's revolutionary guard. jillian: we will see how civilians react and curious if we have seen any response from our allies yet. >> the israelis are on high alert and last week we saw the leader of the israeli defense forces say in a press conference

outside of iran's borders and people didn't know very much about him. the 62-year-old was designated a terrorist by the us in 2005 but he was a leader of iran's elite intelligence wing since 1998. under qasem soleimani special forces have been quietly operating iranian proxy campaigns made up of 20,000 militia fighters all across the middle east. some analysts say he was trying to spread iran's islamic revolution through baghdad to damascus and then to beirut where they could be considered a direct threat to israel. qasem soleimani is responsible for killing 600 american troops during the iraq war. to put that in perspective 17% of all us deaths in iraq from 2003-2011 were orchestrated by qasem soleimani. >> reporter: >> he is directly responsible

for the deaths of hundreds of american soldiers. thousands, if not tens of thousands of people across the middle east. he is the government of the head of cia and special forces. >> reporter: it is only recently the elusive leader has been seen giving interviews and appearing in photos around the region with the ayatollah and joining instagram at one point. the state department, a recent visit to russia meeting vladimir putin, and his most recent presence in baghdad a few weeks ago as iraqi officials were trying to form a government. if there is any doubt he had a hand in that attack at the us embassy in baghdad look at this photo right here and see the words qasem soleimani is our leader spray-painted in red under the broken window at the embassy. iran sees his death as a political assassination and is expected to respond to the death of its most powerful commander.

>> reporter: overnight the americans assassinated iran's top military leader, this is a major development for the region as we talked about. proxy wars with the west last night, direct confrontation. what we know outside the baghdad airport two cars were targeted by us drone strikes, eight people were killed including a top iranian military leader and deputy in an iraqi militia group. this is leading to threats of retaliation, iran's supreme leader saying there will be a 3-day morning period. we saw the president of iran tweeting out the great nation of iran will take revenge for the heinous crime. he didn't have control over a number of iranian proxies to the middle east, in places like the gaza strip, lebanon, iraq and syria.

general. the iraqi prime minister condemned this killing. is that surprising to anybody? does it surprise you? >> it is not surprising because on sunday after the united states targeted has below, and iranian backed militia stormed earlier in the week, we saw iraqi prime minister condemn the united states for the strike saying it was a violation of iraqi sovereignty, a lot of pressure on the ground in iraq to get rid of foreign influence not only from iranian's, you see them celebrating the death of qasem soleimani but also from the americans, 5000 american troops on the ground in iraq assisting iraqi security forces in the fight against the islamic state. there will be more pressure on the prime minister to deal with that situation as well.

rob: joining us more with expert insight into what happened here, the vice president of foreign-policy at the heritage foundation james carrafanoh. is it inevitable that iran will punch back at some point? >> they will do something but look at the iranian track record, they tried to break out of the box, they tried to block shipping, shot down a drone, did the saudi infrastructure strike, unleashing their militias in iraq against america, the latest in the things they tried. they will try to -- whether it will be advertised as direct retaliation for this or something else. this is a part of the world where honor is power. if somebody beats you up and you take it you are seen as weak, nobody likes that least of all the iranian's. >> the united states seems ready

democrats say anything nice about anything the administration does but here's nancy pelosi, we cannot put the lives of american service members, diplomats and others further at risk by engaging in provocative and disproportionate actions, further dangerous escalation of violence. this was a man that was planning to kill more americans. what do you think nancy pelosi wanted to do? >> it is really sad where we are, the state of political affairs in this country, democrats want iran to attack us so they can blame donald trump. there were years of appeasement from obama's administration. if you look at what happened during benghazi where four american lives were taken and they blamed it on a youtube video and americans under attack in democrats are attacking the president of the united states.

jillian: we saw things that happened in the last couple days, you talk about the us military airstrikes that were carried out, retaliation goes back and forth. it is not the time to be stagnant. >> if you think about donald trump over the course of this administration in his first term he has been an incredibly restrained president, proportionate in his response and compassionate in his response. he said we don't want to take innocent lives so he has been very compassionate. rob: this shows what happened, other airstrikes we have done have shown the president is not afraid to throw a punch. does that send a good message to the rest of the world to stop some of these actions? >> it sends a loud message that militias cannot attack our

embassy, put american lives that harms risk, donald trump will not play games. when he draws a line in the sand don't cross it. jillian: people are worried about retaliation rightfully so, fearful of the unknown and you hear a lot in overnight hours about being in uncharted territory right now but to your point you look at the move and the way donald trump and his administration have responded to these things what is your message to the american people who are waking up and hearing about this? >> we always have to be on the lookout but this was a surgical attack, we took out qasem soleimani. this was the right move the president made and a lot of people are talking about what does iran do next? iran should be worrying about what we do next, donald trump has been very restrained and clear, he doesn't want endless wars in this particular region of the world but when they are attacking american citizens and our brave men and women and putting our embassies at risk that is something we have to deal with.
