response to the killing of qasem soleimani and not escalation of 4. donald remains confident tweeting and part we have the most powerful military anywhere in the world by far. and remember all of our troops and their families and keep them in your prayers. live coverage continues right now, goodbye. >> it is wednesday january 8th, fox news alert. the world now waiting for a response from donald trump to a late-night attack on us forces. after a dozen missiles rain down on military bases in iraq. >> there supreme leader speaking an hour ago calling the attacker crushing response to the takedown of general qasem soleimani but the regime says this is not an escalation of 4. jillian: the next step depends on what we hear from the president today. rob: we have fox news team
1:01 am
coverage with griff jenkins monitoring white house reaction from the nation's capital and jockey ibanez with precautionary measures being taken at home. >> general anthony t ata with more on the rising threat. we start live in the middle east with breaking details. >> reporter: this attack was not surprised to us authorities who knew that iran would take some sort of action after the killing of one of their generals in iraq late last week. the us had already taken some defensive actions and there were as far as we know now us casualties the ayatollah in iran speaking to his people was talking tough today saying he slapped america in the face today and now we wait for the white house response. 15 ballistic missiles fired overnight at two military bases used by us forces, when missile hit them base, four missiles failed in flight, the other ten struck al-assad, facility north
1:02 am
of baghdad. video released out of iran shows some of the missiles in flight at night on the way to the target and we have images of iranian to the street waving flags and celebrate the attack, no video yet of damage on the ground but now reports of us casualties. after the strikes the iranian foreign minister tweeted they took proportionate measures in self defense on article 51 of the un charter, targeting -- senior officials were launched. we do not seek escalation of war but will defend ourselves against any aggression. the pentagon released its own statement saying in recent days and in response to iranian threats the department of defense has taken measures to safeguard our personnel and partners. bases are on high alert duty indications the iranian regime plans to attack our forces and
1:03 am
interests in the region. as we evaluate our response we will take all necessary measures to protect and defend us personnel, partners and allies in the region. iran's ayatollah says if they retaliate, he will target other gulf states and possibly targeting in israel. after the targeted killing of general soleimani, mike pompeo said the us is committed to de-escalation. we now await word from the white house on what if any response the us will take. shannon: donald trump will address the nation this morning as reaction pours in from washington, democrats quick to slam the president claiming the world cannot afford war. >> griff jenkins live in washington as the president planned his next move.
1:04 am
>> reporter: we will hear from the president later this morning, expected to make a statement, perhaps address the nation giving americans insight into the next steps, what it means to the us and allies and there will be a message for iran's supreme leader as well. this is reaction on capitol hill, some of it critical from democratic leaders, nancy pelosi closely monitoring the situation following the bombing, us troops in iraq, we must ensure the safety of our servicemembers including needless provocations from the administration and demand iran cease its violence, america and the world cannot afford war. on the campaign trail, foreign policy front and center, democrats putting a lot of blame at the president, elizabeth for accusing him of leading us into war. >> this is a reminder why we need to de-escalate tension in the middle east.
1:05 am
the american people do not want a war with iran. >> there was an anonymous warning from one who saw combat in iraq. >> it would be compared to the devastation and destruction that would because by going to war with iran. >> senate republicans rallying behind the president. >> it was an act of 4 by a regime that for the last 40 years has been a cancer in the middle east. when they say they want to destroy israel they are not kidding. the president has all the authority he needs under article 2 to respond. >> there will be a response and the president will take it on his timing. that is the way they have tackled this and they will handle it moving forward. >> in the house kevin mccarthy had this to say.
1:06 am
>> the president sent a clear message with one missile taking out the individual who has killed more than 600 service men and women serving in iraq. >> reporter: it is unclear as nancy pelosi will push for that vote on a war powers resolution today, briefings will continue from the vice president to chairman of the joint chiefs, secretary of defense and state and the cia director. jillian: our next guest says america is in a position of power to reach out diplomatically to iran. >> let's bring in former deputy commander of us forces in afghanistan brigadier general anthony t ata. no indication of us casualties in this attack. what do you think happens next? >> reporter: what happens next
1:07 am
depends if that is true. if it is true we have full accountability of our people at the locations of the attacks which i believe we do and nobody has been injured or killed, then that is one option. my sources told me there were two packages ready to go last night. one is preparation for the 52 targets, we had service men and women killed or injured and one is more of the diplomatic response we are postured for if there were no casualties so this is a very good position to be in. if you think of this like a chess match we took the queen off the board. this was the second most powerful person in iran. he was all over the board so to speak and throughout the southwest asia, the middle east, lebanon, planning with hezbollah, planning with hamas,
1:08 am
planning with the iraqi militias doing us and our allies so much harm and they responded with making a move. they didn't take a piece, they didn't do anything in their foreign minister has said we are concluded in his tweet and i take that as a diplomatic overture that he is ready to talk. shannon: let me ask what you think of iranian tv claiming there were 80 casualties into this incident that happened overnight. a lot of people are not happy with the way things are going over there. is this their way to save face with their people? >> i see that as a face-saving measure. i'm glad they are saying that. we know it is true and some of the other tv stations and network news have actually reported the iranian number and it lends some credibility to
1:09 am
their claim which is not a bad thing when you are trying to de-escalate here and pull back from the abyss. anything that reinforces iranian face-saving so that they come to the table and choose not to fight, they know they can't win a war with us, there's no way they can compete with us in any realm of combat and think about this, they shot two moving drones out of the sky, had a very accurate attack on the saudi oil refinery that destroyed it and they can't hit targets at an airfield they already scoped out 100 times since 2003. >> you think they intentionally missed and if they kill some of their people this would get really ugly really fast. >> they have the capability to hit the targets they want to hit as they evidenced in the past.
1:10 am
i think this was a shot across the bow and it was a move on the chessboard and they know, the president was clear about his red line. if you kill an american we are coming after 52 targets and the cultural sites controversy, on the list of nuclear weapons inspections sites they have hidden some of their inspections sites and call them cultural sites. that was information warfare from the president saying we know what you are doing. >> you mentioned their capability, if we take a look at what they are capable of, they have over 2000 ballistic missiles and invested 1,000,000,$000 in the program since 2000, the largest arsenal in the middle east. what comes next? what do you think the president should do? where do we go this morning? >> i think the president has got
1:11 am
all the right cards in his hand, this administration is the best i have ever seen it leveraging the elegance of national power, diplomatic and from asian, military, economic, using them at the appropriate time to keep those tight on the economic power, keep the information power going and allow their information, disinformation on the casualty number to go unfettered, let them for clear people. that is what they are masters at, let the numbers stand. who cares? as long as they believe it and consume it. and it is time to make a diplomatic overture because we are in a position of power, they have made their move and they have said they are done. i'm not sure i believe they are done but they said they are done. we talked a few mornings ago and i said in a few weeks or months they will try to do something spectacular.
1:12 am
or maybe they go back to the proxy. thank you for coming on today. we appreciate it. 11 minutes after the hour. on top of what we have seen with the attacks overnight there are no survivors in a commercial jet crash near tehran in iran. some flights to that region have been grounded. what we know about the cause of this crash. >> is iran carries out a bold act of aggression against the us, james carrafanoh explains why they can no longer play the victim card. we will be right back.

1:16 am
international airlines flight went down. it had just left iran on its way to kiev. the airline is suspending flights to tehran as it works to pinpoint the cause of the crash. there were no americans on board that jet. >> happening overnight in iran a 4.9 magnitude earthquake striking near a nuclear power plant in the western part of the country near the persian gulf. so far no word on damage to the plant or dose-related to it. it is believed to be a natural event. >> related to this, all of this happening at the same time the regime targeting us troops stationed in neighboring iraq. >> there are no reports of us casualties but several of those missiles missed their mark. is a possible iran never intended a direct hit? what is the end game? joining us his army veteran and vice president of the heritage foundation james carrafanoh.
1:17 am
>> no reports of american casualties or any casualties, allied or iraqi. that is interesting. >> that has to be intentional. they intentionally missed not wanting to escalate this any further against the president like this they are probably scared of? >> that seems to be the general assessment most people are coming up with particularly if you look at the iraqi statements, we are done shooting and as long as you don't shoot back we are done here which almost seems to be please, this is it, the worst we are going to get, don't worry about it anymore. it seems to be a face saving fireworks display. heather: go into more about the precision of where these struck in the information we have and
1:18 am
the fact that they have had other targets, drones they targeted, things like that and the fact that as of right now none of these seem to have hit in a place that has done significant damage or loss of life. >> if they wanted to kill americans there are more efficient ways to do that, car bombs, shorter range weapons, these are ballistic missiles that they have to hit a target just a few square miles, not the dentist targets if they wanted to kill americans. they've got thousands of missiles, could have fired a lot more missiles and made sure they could have planned an area. it doesn't appear they did any of that. rob: the president will speak later this morning. what do you expect to hear? >> i don't think this requires a
1:19 am
us military response, much as when they shot down the drone the us did not respond militarily. i don't think the us has been effectively challenged. it doesn't require a direct response from the us. on the other hand the entire regime, the entire region looks at this and goes these guys are crazy, incredibly reckless, they look kind of stupid and the europeans can't condone this behavior so the us will garner enormous support. we should respond to that. >> what about the supposition our allies need to take in the region right now? >> the israelis will defend themselves and expect america to defend themselves. if the iranian's unleash hezbollah the israelis will defend themselves, they made
1:20 am
that clear. rob: thanks for coming on today. jillian: texas targeted with many attacks. rob: and following these missile attacks, a new flight band just announced by the faa. you gotta try it, it's terrible. i don't wanna tray it if it's terrible. it's like mango chutney and burnt hair. no thank you, i have a very sensitive palate. just try it! hey guys, i think we should hurry up. if you taste something bad, you want someone else to try it. it's what you do. i can't get it out of my mouth! if you want to save fifteen percent or more on car insurance, you switch to geico. it's what you do. dog, dog, dog.

1:30 am
people the time for hit and run is over. if you hit iran you get hit back. a short time ago the ayatollah said we slapped them in the face with military action, the corrupt presence of the us in the region should come to a end challenging donald trump to get out of iraq, if the us fires back today the escalation will continue. 15 ballistic missiles filed by iran overnight, four failed in flight, 11 hit inside the walls and two bases hit by us forces, one missile hitting in out of assad north of baghdad where the us launches its own drones, possibly the drone that killed the iranian general late last week which is why was targeted by the iranian's overnight. not a surprise us authorities and the primary straps two suggest they may not strike again. he tweeted iran took and concluded proportionate measures

in self-defense under article 51. the last line says we do not seek escalation or war but will defend ourselves against aggression so that is reiterating they may not strike again. the iranian news agency reporting 80 casualties from the missile strikes, absolutely not true. the us is saying 0 casualties, iran pumping up propaganda to appease the people, the people think the missiles killed a bunch of americans, if the responses killing the iranian general -- the leaders can save face. the ball squarely and donald trump's court. if he decides to respond the ayatollah says his next targets will be allies in the region. that could include gulf states. we heard from the prime minister benjamin netanyahu who told his people we stand in determination and strength with the us. who shall strike at us will face a deadly blow.

needless provocations from the administration and demand iran sees its filings, america and the world cannot afford war. on the campaign trail the former vice president warning of wider escalation iran. >> mister president, you have to clean your decision and strategy to the american people. that is your job as president, mister president, not dear leader, not supreme leader. democracy runs on accountability. nowhere is it more important than the power to make war and bring peace. >> reporter: in a warning from the only candidate who has seen combat in iraq. >> it would make the iraq war look like a picnic compared to the devastation and destruction that would because by going to war with iran. >> reporter: republicans rallying behind the president, kevin mccarthy had this to say. >> the president sent a clear
1:34 am
message with one voice, taking up individual that killed more than 600 service men and women in iraq. >> reporter: lindsey graham says the president is operating a fool authority. >> it was an act of war by a regime for the past 40 years, a cancer in the mideast. they say they want to destroy israel, they are not kidding. all the authority under article 2 to respond. >> reporter: another thing to watch is whether nancy pelosi will push for the vote on the war powers resolution that may come today and briefings continue from administration officials. heather: let's bring in colonel david rader who was held for 440 days as a prisoner in iran and joined us to react to the latest developed. thank you for your time this morning.
1:35 am
what is your reaction? >> things are moving very quickly since we talked earlier today. i have been listening to what is going on. it is interesting to contrast what happened last weekend in iraq with what happened to us 40 years ago into iran. very interesting way to contrast that. hopefully there is no new taking of an embassy and no new hostage situation because trust me, 444 days we spent as hostages was not something i would wish for my worst enemy. 18 of 52 hostages have passed
1:36 am
on, ten spouses have passed on and for the last 40 years, once released, every government official we ran into at the white house returned, promised we would be taken care of. that hasn't happened yet. the fourth of november of 2019, 40 eighth anniversary of our taking and we are still fighting for restitution. rob: your story is unbelievable what you went through as a victim of this very oppressive regime. how do you think the administration should treat this regime and how should we respond to these developments coming out of iran? >> i am a huge fan of the president's, what makes it interesting is in the 40 years i
1:37 am
just mentioned it is the first time in this administration members of the president's team have taken an interest in what we went through and by that i mean the privilege of spending an hour with the group of 4. the message is maybe five and once in the office with secretary of state mike pompeo in april and his number one assistant was bob o'brien, national security -- the first time in 40 years and after two trips the us district court for the district of columbia unsuccessfully that anybody has paid attention to what happened to us. jillian: if we can bring up that video we can show you in a

couple minutes and bring it up for a moment, this is video coming in from iran. it is daylight and we will get some new information. before we let you go what do you want to hear from the president today? >> the president is meeting with his national security advisers today. he figured out a difference between what the iranian's are saying as far as casualties are concerned. the president is going to do what he has done for the past year. he will walk carefully. he's going to not overreact although i'm impressed with the fact that he could go to a half years when this happened but he
1:39 am
finally got to the point where he said that is enough and has reacted and it is about time. rob: thank you for your time, appreciate it. rob: 38 after the hour. a lot of people asking are we on the brink of a war? ran in the us say it is not what they want. jillian: dan hoffman ways in on on that.

1:49 am
still an option? former cia station chief and fox news correspondent dan hoffman, lots to talk about. let's talk about the tweet from iran's foreign minister. iran concluded proportionate measures in self defense. we do not treat escalation of war but will defend ourselves against any aggression. what do you make of the wording that iran took and concluded proportionate measures? >> it is a seminal moment that shouldn't be lost on us that iran is acknowledging military strikes on iraq. by my recollection the first time that has happened since the iran iraq war of the 1980s, they were targeting iraqi bases the house us service personnel, those bases have been instrumental, this is iran's overt response. the asymmetric proxy warfare,
1:50 am
their assistance with the taliban in afghanistan or efforts and political influence in iraq where so many proxy militias control the parliament in their effort to expel us troops from iraq. rob: the supreme leader of iran put out a tweet, the us has caused more division, destruction and demolition of infrastructure in this region. they do this everywhere. governments won't accept the president of the united states. iran lies a lot and play the victim a lot and act like they haven't been involved in the things they do. what do you make of that? >> reporter: the benefit from iranian officials whether it is ayatollah khameini speaking for tweeting, it opens opportunities for the team at the state
1:51 am
department to counter this false iran narrative with public diplomacy and that is a great opportunity to step up smartly as we have the past few days for weeks and months countering the false narrative. jillian: does this lead to an iraq war? >> we have been at war with iran since the invasion of iraq in 2003. i believe the strike against soleimani restored escalation dominance for the united states. it is clear iran to my estimation wanted to threaten nato, they needed to respond but didn't want to risk a punitive retaliatory action threatening iran's regime or survival and that is where we are today. i don't see it going in the way of a hot war at this point. we are a strategic possibly rob: let me pull headlines from
1:52 am
an article in the wall street journal, when iran had somebody important taken out, in the past they have waited sometimes for months and have used terrorism to take out soft targets thousands of miles away. this is a direct response. it seems very cut and dry. is the scope of what iran will do to get even with us? >> as long as the iranian regime is in power we are a threat for them to launch terrorist attacks in the middle east and worldwide. they tried to target the saudi ambassador in the united states so they have some reach through their proxies including in the homeland in the united states. we have to be on alert going forward. there is no question that iran will mount those attacks. some won't be acknowledged. the will be non-attributable
1:53 am
including cyber attacks. jillian: more troops have been sent overseas. do they stay there? >> reporter: that is something the president has to think about. the augmented are defenses, our embassy in baghdad and deploy another 3000 to the region. that will depend on the situation at hand with close advice from the secretary of defense. rob: if there is no big response, if we go with diplomacy do things go back to the way they were a couple days ago with iran with proxy militias to do their dirty work? >> we could look at that. the contentious issues are there. we are concerned about their
1:54 am
capability, the nuclear deal and iran state sponsor of terrorism, iran wants us out of iraq and reduce their influence in the middle east. we will continue on this contentious path and in some ways as you point out, asymmetric warfare against us and we will counter that and be clear if iran crosses the red line their leadership will suffer consequences. we can find them and take action when needed. jillian: what about our allies over there? >> a couple things. i can tell you from my own experience and partners in the region and beyond keeping our people safe and at the same time those countries, specifically saudi arabia and israel, but rain has found themselves at risk from iranian efforts to mount proxy attacks in their country.
1:55 am
and in the region? >> at some point today, thank you so much. jillian: special coverage of the missile attacks continue next. zicam is completely different. unlike most other cold medicines, zicam is clinically proven to shorten colds. i am a zifan for zicam! oral or nasal.
