♪ steve: overnight iran retaliated against the united states launching 15 ballistic missiles into iraq targeting the u.s. and coalition forces. there were, at this hour, no u.s. casualties, no u.s. service members were hurt. thank goodness. ainsley: the attacks come days after a u.s. airstrike killed iran's top military leader. general soleimani. president trump is going to address the nation at some point in morning, possibly during our show. brian: right. we have live team coverage. we have kristin fisher at the white house with what we can expect to hear from the president.

kristin tomlinson response if there is one. griff jenkins response from lawmakers. and to israel with rick leventhal. he is handling all things middle east related. so far, as the sun comes up, keep your fingers crossed, no casualties. >> right. and no strikes here in israel, at least not yet, brian and ainsley and steve. good morning to you. this attack, by the way, not a surprise to u.s. authorities. they fully expected bases in iraq might be targeted and they took defensive actions and as you mentioned no american casualties. but iran supreme leader still talking tough saying he slapped america in the face and now the focus shifts to the white house. again, we know there were 15 ballistic missiles fired from iran overnight at two military bases used by u.s. forces. one missile hit a base in erbil in northern iraq four missiles failed in flight the other 10 struck al assad a huge sprawling facility

visited by the president last christmas. often launch drone attacks. in iran people celebrated in the streets waving flags and chanting down with the u.s.a. and down with israel. we haven't seen video of any damages at the bases but we are seeing shrapnel from one of the failed missiles which landed in a field about 30 miles outside of erbil. after the strikes the iranian foreign minister tweeted iran took and concluded proportionate measures on self-defense under article 51 u.n. charter targeting base from which cowardly armed attack against our citizens and senior officials were launched. we do not seek escalation or war, but will defend ourselves against any aggression. if the u.s. retaliates, iran warns it will hit more targets, possibly here in israel where prime minister benjamin netanyahu spoke earlier said he who strike at us will face a deadly blow. iran dealing with other major issues today there was a plane crash in tehran this morning that killed nearly 180 people on board. also multiple earthquakes in

iran today. one of them near a nuclear power plant, guys. steve: isn't there a story that there was an earthquake in iran as well? >> yeah. i just mentioned, steve, multiple earthquakes and one of them was for that one of their nuclear facilities. ainsley: what do you make of that? >> well, i mean, they have a lot on their hands. they have a lot to deal with. potential damages we haven't heard about yet. they have this plane crash that was horrific. ukraine plane crash. but it was in tehran. now they still have this crisis at hand with what's been happening in iraq. their general being killed and now what, if anything, the u.s. might do to retaliate. it's a very difficult time for pretty much all players in the region. steve: a lot going on. rick, thank you. brian: thanks keep in mind too there was a series protests in iraq because they are so unhappy with

their government. all is well, missiles launched from iran two military bases in iraq. assessment of casualties and damages taking place now. so far, so good. we have the most powerful and well equipped military anywhere in the world by far. i will be making a statement tomorrow morning. and that leads us to where we are right now. steve: he will be speaking from the white house. the president is expected to address the missile attack from the white house perhaps this morning. ainsley: so far today. the president has only tweeted once all is well. the tweet brian just read to you. brian: kristin is outside the white house to speculate what we could be looking at today. what on deck for the president. why he didn't speak last night and why he is choosing today. >> you know, we are still waiting to find out when exactly president trump is going to speak this morning, when he is going to address the nation. what exactly he is going to say. is he going to escalate the situation even further with talk of more retaliation or is he going to say something

more along the lines of enough is enough. and attempt to offer iran some sort of diplomatic offramp. as of now our best guess as to what he might say is the tweet that you all just read, in which he said, you know, all is well. and really just hinted as you will just have to wait and see what i say tomorrow morning. we are still waiting for a loot olot of details about what will take place today. as for what was happening at the white house last night while iran was launching those 15 missiles at two bases in iraq, housing u.s. troops, here at the white house, president trump was huddling with the secretary of state and the secretary of defense and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. earlier in the day both the secretary of state and the secretary of defense have held press conferences warning iran about the u.s.' commitment and capabilities. >> the united states is not seeking a war with iran, but we are prepared to finish one. we are seeking a diplomatic

solution but, first, this will require iran to deescalate. we are prepared for any contingency and then we will respond appropriately to whatever they do. >> now, even though these attacks last night did not injure or kill any u.s. troops as best we can tell at this point in time, remember, entrepreneurship had said that the u.s. would likely retaliate even if iran hit u.s. interests in the region and last night's attack certainly constitutes as that. brian, ainsley, and steve? steve: right. what happens next. kristin, thank you very much. let's bring in republican congressman adam kinzinger national guard pilot an iraq war veteran and house foreign affairs committee. good morning to you. do you think it's all done. >> it will be interesting. maybe in the short-term, yes. a lot of it is going to determine what the battle damage assessment. it's great that we didn't have any members of our military killed or injured. what happened to our

equipment, there is airplanes there, et cetera. i think that's going to be something that will be important to note. and it may be an opportunity for us to kind of walk back from this cliff that iran has brought us to. but i want to be really clear about something because i was watching, obviously, this network all last night and there is some people that jump on and say we just killed soleimani, that's great. now is the time to leave iraq on a high note that would be exactly what iran and soleimani wanted us to leave. now is the moment where i think the president, whatever he does, he will have the information. i will make the right decision. hopefully we are walking back from iran's escalation but we can finish any fight. brian: congressman, we would not be at this place if we just took an active helping in 2010 after alaay an american ally leader won an legitimate election in iraq and reallowed iran and soleimani particularly consolidate power with al maliki and kick out all-american influence and essentially tell us there's

the house, your colleague, nancy pelosi, speaking of american escalation. she said, she tweeted out closely monitoring the situation following bombings targeting u.s. troops in iraq. we must ensure the safety of our service members including ending and she says needless provocations from the administration and demanding that iran cease its violence, america and the world cannot afford war. what's your assessment of your colleagues look at what happened? >> i actually tweeted a response to that. i will tell you what my thought is let's say under obama, speaker boehner had done something like this, i would have been very disturbed. he never obviously would have. this was wrong. you know, at the time when americans are having missiles reigning down on them, we should actually rally around the flag. there is plenty of time for politics. we have a whole yearly for the election. for the speaker to basically in essence accuse the president for these missiles coming down on the american soldiers is something i

who is responsible for the deaths of at least 600 american soldiers, who is responsible for an attack that killed an american a few days ago and who ginned up an attack to try to besiege a u.s. embassy any country whose embassy comes under attack has to defend it. we have this dead enemy of the united states on the one side of the ledger and other side of the ledger 12 missiles or so didn't hit a single target. when i look at that i think the united states came away from that exchange the clear winner. i don't see that we need to necessarily do anything in response. steve: you are saying that the president's strategy, the president won this round? >> absolutely looks that way to me. to me, the tweet that you just showed from the foreign minister of iran you don't necessarily want to trust the foreign minister of iran the key word was concluded. took and concluded. now he, knows the whole world is watching what they are going to do next, he is going to watch everything they say. seems unlikely he would use a word like concluded signaling to the whole world that they are done if they had something else

immediately planned. i believe this for a long time, iran is fundamentally a cautious power. they take risks when they think there is not going to be push back. if they go for a time, weeks beings months or years without getting much push back, they get riskier. as soon as they get hit, they tend to shrink back. and they don't get hit very often. but it does happen and they have a track record of pulling back. and that may be what's going on now i hope it's what's going on now. the strike against soleimani was justified and iranians take very seriously when the president says look, if you mess with us too much there will be a severe response and they're worried about that potentially severe response. brian: talk about critics. i want to hear your response to this. leon panetta writes a editorial. have badly failed to achieve their objectives. trump thought he could simply walk away from the iranian deal ignore the other nations, britain, france, russia, germany and china negotiate a deal

impose new forces in gulf and force iranian leadership to negotiate they haven't and we have this result. what's your thought? >> look, the president did try to work with allies to fix the iran deal. and it was a nice try. it didn't work out. the real problem with the iran deal he noticed all along and put a lot of this on the obama administration, including forminger secretary panetta front loaded the benefits to iran. we do a deal with a 10 year time horizon. iran gets all the stuff it wants upfront. we get the stuff we are supposed to get way later. as your other gusts have pointed out all that money, unfrozen assets, pallets of cash, what did iran do with it? they started spending it on terror and conflict and destabilization around the middle east. the president was right to object to that and i think right to put the squeeze back on iran. but not to escalate conflict, to deescalate conflict. when you reduce the amount of resources the regime has at its disposal you reduce its ability to fight these wars to fund terrorism and

spread conflict. steve: ultimately, last night overnight for us, the ayatollah said that iran had dealt a slap in the face to the united states and said that we have got to get out. just within the last two minutes, hasan rouhani from iran said. this general soleimani fought heroically against isis, at news are a, al qaeda and all. if it weren't for his war on terror european capitals would be in great danger now. our final answer to his assassination will to be kick all forces out of the region. >> they are not going to be able to kick american forces out of the region. the president -- as he said all along he wants to reduce american commitments around the world including in the middle east based on the circumstances, beared on own defense requirements. i think you can expect to see at some points during this presidency further american troops leaving the middle east not because iran chased us out because the circumstances no longer

warrant it and the president promise to wind down these wars which is exactly what he campaigned on. brian: huge bases in bahrain, huge bases in ume. huge bases in kuwait. just depends how many people we want to put in iraq and of course a huge base in turkey, too. we are not going anywhere. nice try. >> not all of those bases are there to do the same thing. the base in bahrain in particular is a naval base there to prevent iran from harassing gulf shipping and closing the strait of hormuz. that's not going anywhere. i can assure you of that. ainsley: they try closing that they will see who their enemies are thank you for joining us. >> thank you. ainsley: iran says the strike was revenge for killing soleimani. why he says these attacks are all for show. ♪ ♪

iranian commander soleimani. >> i think we should expect that they will retaliate in some way, shape, or form. either through their proxies as they have been doing now for how many years or and/or with by their own hand. and so we take this one step at a time. we are prepared for any contingency. >> officials say no u.s. troops were hurt inside iraq those two bases. 15 short-range ballistic missiles were launched from inside iran. officials tell me 10 hit the al-assad base in western iraq. one hit the base in erbil in kurdish controlled northern iraq tourism iranian missiles failed to reach their targets. some of the ballistic missiles traveled at least 300 miles to reach al-assad. their fired off 1:00 a.m. local time 5:30 p.m. back here east coast. iran has over 2,000 ballistic missiles in its arsenal according to the latest estimate. iran's foreign minister said two iraqi bases were chosen because that's where u.s. special operations forces were based who carried out the drone strike killing

more dangerous for them. look, the iranians have a lot of very lethal options that they could have used to respond. yet, they chose not to use any of them. that's why this looks to be designed for show. look, it probably is difficult for the public to understand this when they wake up and see these missiles were fired. take it from a former soldier who has spent a lot of time at war and been on the receiving end of a number of iranian rocket attacks from their missions this seems to be designed for more of a deescalation of tension's in the long run. you will could even argue that a minor indirect ineffective fire that was taken place with no u.s. casualties reported is a very minor thing for us taking out their number one commander and a man that was getting ready to attack american service members and kill diplomats. brian: four missiles failed. one hit erbil. 10 missiles al-assad air base. hit the base where the drone might have been launched

from. is that a possibility the drone that killed soleimani. >> drones are launched from a number of different bases it. is a possibility. i doubt that the iranians have that strong of intelligence to be able to determine that drones are launched from a number of different locations. again, i don't want to minimize this strike. but, when i look at this, the iranians have been doing this for a number of years. only thing unique the missiles were launched from iranian territory. this is really a common occurrence to be under the threat of indirect fire from iraq. so common it didn't use to make much headlines when the iranians would do it true their proxy forces. this seems like a calculated decision on behalf of the iranians to try to save face. they get to tell their public that they struck back against the u.s. government. they don't look weak. they are able to save face but at the same time not do something that is such a strong military retaliation that it even really warrants a military response from the president. i think in the end this will actually calm the situation more in the long run.

ainsley: brett, is there something we can do to retaliate without going to war and without having to fire missiles or cause death? >> well, i mean, the fact is i think what we did with the drone strike is something that -- a tool available -- ainsley: -- what happened yesterday? >> i don't think it warrants a response. i think the president should come out now and open up the window for negotiation for talks. i don't think that this was something that was large enough for us to respond in kind. but, at the same time, you know, i don't know what the president is going to do. he has a lot of very smart military advisors around him but at the same time this is a president who doesn't want to go to war. we know that. there was multiple times he could have responded previously and he didn't he does not want to go to war. i hope in the end this actually eases tensions. at the same time, puts iranians on notice that they can't -- they are not untouchable. that they cannot kill americans with impunity. steve: you know, to your point, that it was symbolic, they had to do something to

show their people, that would explain why, for instance, the revolutionary guard website says they fired 30 missiles and state tv there are stories that a lot of americans were killed, which is not true. meanwhile, in this country, brett, and we are short on time, but, nonetheless, a number of democrats are saying the thing about this president he is trying to get us into world war iii. we just want to know his strategy because it looks to us like he doesn't. does it look like to you that he does not have a strategy? >> absolutely not. and this is not the time for politics. we need to stand behind the president. we need to stand by the troops. and this is not a time for the other side of the aisle to sit here and bash the president's actions. he does have a plan, and we're seeing it carried out. and in my opinion, it's working right now. only time will tell what happens. ainsley: thank you, brett, the defense secretary mark esper did say i don't want to start a war but we are prepared to finish one. he, to your point does want iran to deescalate and he

he waited to address the nation this morning. still waiting battleground assessment. advisors are weighing those assessments. again, i believe the president he should continue to at least contemplate striking back at iran. i don't believe he will, based on battle damage assessment i understand. but targets that would be available to his disposal and u.s. military capability would be the ballistic missile capability. brian, you mentioned earlier this morning, they have 2,000 ballistic missiles, perhaps going after other military infrastructure. maybe even oil production capability. but, again, let's step back. i think there is an opportunity here for strategic pause. we do have exceptional and highly capable u.s. a symmetric forces. u.s. air forces. we just deployed six b-52s. harry s. truman steaming off in the gulf. we just deployed pac 3

patriot missile interceptors. there is plenty of a symmetric u.s. advantage again to continue to deter iranian aggression. steve: dick, are you surprised, you know, they said there would be fierce revenge, yet, out of the 2,000 missiles they shot over 15, although iraq says 22 missiles. and that was it. and they didn't really hit anything. are you surprised at their response? >> well, steve, again, we have toible aize and determine what exactly was their response? was it just to send a message not necessarily perhaps to the united states but to their own population? they had to act and they acted accordingly. again, that's where the president will be measured. i think wha president has done and u.s. national security team has done is restored u.s. effective deterrence in the region. not only in terms of taking out soleimani, who was the architect of iranian terrorism and the operational commander of their lethal terrorism, but

has acted, again, by putting -- restoring u.s. credibility by putting forces in the region, backing them up with decisive u.s. leadership. i think that's what we are going to hear from the president this morning. i think we are going to hear that it will take a measured step. it's up to the iranians. ainsley, you brought up earlier question about what happens next. i think the president is going to want to compel the iranians to get to the negotiating table. we have got other instruments of national power. we have got diplomatic information, economic, economic sanctions have been working by the way. but we have also demonstrated that we are willing to enforce u.s. deterrence. secure u.s. national security objectives. safety and security of other men and women serving over in that region. we are going to do it effectively with u.s. a symmetric forces. by the way that can launch from u.s. as a global strike capability as much as we can in the region. steve: all right. well, iran did say they have concluded their attack. let's see what happens next.

gst live from baghdad with the latest on the attacks because it was the country of iraq that iran fired on. trey? reporter: brian, ainsley steve, good morning. that's right overnight 15 ballistic missiles were fired from iranian territory towards a military base in western iraq that does house american forces. according to u.s. officials, ten of those missiles hit their target, four failed and one land ed in the northern iraqi city of erbil. reports do indicate iran verbal ly informed the iraqis ahead of the strikes and we are getting reaction today in baghdad where the iraqi government called this a violation of their countries sovereignty. they also notified finland, who likely notified u.s. forces. here in baghdad overnight we saw extensive helicopter and fighter jet activity, a lot of military movement, but no strikes near the bases around baghdad. there is concern today that the response isn't over, many iranian-backed iraqi she a malitia do operate and may

i think they believe they have to look tough. they just lost their most important and most powerful general. they had to do something. what they did was very carefully calculated, i assume that they deliberately avoided killing americans, and basically had a show of a demonstration of force without any immediate human consequence. so they left it up to the president. he can play it either way and say look, no americans were killed, therefore i don't need to retaliate, or he can say, you know, you fire these missiles and i said if you did that i'm going to retaliate but i don't think they moved in a way which forces us to retaliate, but i want to make a deeper point. the iranian dictatorship has been a war with the united states at least since november of 1979. they have engaged in action after action after action. there have been 52 different court decisions in the u.s..

they found them guilty of terrorism killing americans. they have a long record of trying to kill us. their most recent statements today they want to drive us out of the region. we have to have a long term strategy that recognizes this is a regime which is dedicated to creating an anti-american movement and which is dedicated to driving us out of the middle east. they just said so again this morning. they did. >> so whatever happens on the daily news isn't the big deal. what happens is do we design a strategy that actually changes the regime, or do we play games this week and then three months from now, they do something horrible and we play games for two weeks and then they do something horrible. that's what the record has been. they get away with an amazing number of things including court findings and 9/11 commission findings that they directly help ed the people who attacked us on 9/11 and killed 3,000

people. brian: listen they have no friends and here is the other question to consider. do we say iran is iran. we won't do regime change the country is too big and it's too diverse. it's not going to happen but do we say okay, should we just allow iran to have this iron grip on i rank, or do we say with a place holder of a prime minister, allow iraqis to cover to have a fair election, like they had after the surge? well i think first of all, i think we want the fair election in iraq and want to help the iraqi people continue to move towards self-government and the demonstrations have been going on in iraq have been demonstrations in favor of an honest government and in favor of honest elections, but i don't think he should assume that iran is too big to have regime change , when the soviet union was pretty darn big, and the soviet union collapsed. the iranian dictatorship is not popular. they can't deliver better food.

they can't deliver better gasoline. they can't deliver better housing. they can't deliver better jobs, and i think the average iranian is a little tired of watching all their money go for overseas terrorism just to make them happy, so i wouldn't assume automatically that this is a stable dictatorship and that we have to passively assume that for the next 20 or 30 years, they get to hit us three or four times a year, we get to retaliate, but the game is just going to go on as a game. i don't think that's acceptable to the american people, and i don't think that it's in the long run is very good for the middle east. >> steve: newt, after the united states took out the general last week, the president simply tweeted the american flag just an hour or two ago apparently a high-ranking official in iran responded to the hit last night, by simply posting the iranian flag. so, it looks as if they are trying to equate themselves with what the president did.

a foreign military advisor to the house armed services committee joining us from d.c. rebecca good morning to you. >> good morning. >> steve: so the president of the united states ordered hit on general soleimani, took him out and last night in response, all we got from the iranians you say was a fireworks show. reporter: well yeah, so first of all there's two things to keep in mind about the killing of soleimani and president trump's decision to do so. one, it's a tactical victory for us because soleimani was the one who was orchestrating all of these malitia attacks at the head of the iranian government but two it had a larger strategic effect. for decades the united states government, this is republican and democratic administrations pretended as though we didn't recognize it was the iranian government behind all of these malitias and we sort of had this agreement that we would let them continue these a symmetric attacks against the united states and not hold the regime accountable. president trump blew the top off that, by taking out soleimani, which puts the united states in a much better position to try to

get iran checked again and stop a lot of this violence that has continued. and as a result, there was risk to it. house is the iranian regime going to respond, and they responded by intentionally missing americans to kill americans -- >> steve: they did that on purpose, you're saying? reporter: i believe that they have. i think that it is a mistake to look at what happened and believe that the iranians missile force is incapable of hitting its intended target or taking out lives. if you remember back in september, the iranians were the ones that were responsible for attacking the saudi oil fields and they used cruise missiles and drones, and they conducted a highly sophisticated hybrid attack against the facilities, so i think that what we should learn from this and remember, the reason that they have invested so much in the largest and most diverse missile force in the middle east is because their air force can't compete with ours, and so they've done that to hold us at risk so i think that it's wrong

to mock the iranians at this point to say their missile force is incapable. i think it's highly capable but i think they just went right up to the line and weren't willing to take out any facilities or to harm americans in this particular retaliatory response. >> brian: what would you look to be the response today from us where would you hope our response would be and what do you think their response would be? >> well i think clearly i think that president's decision to take out soleimani is a victory. i think it has large consequences for how the united states proceeds in the middle east. i think we should take that victory. i think it's clear the iranians are unwilling to escalate this further. they don't want american military response on iranian soil, and so we should have let things be as they lied. don't escalate it and the other thing i'd say is i would hope president trump doesn't make that mistake that president obama made called them the jv team. this is not a time to mock the iranian regime. they are claiming all kinds of

bombings last night. stock futures by the way are mixed hours after iran targeted u.s. troops in iraq with missile s and oil is pretty stable. ainsley: oil prices now stabilizing like brian just said after fears of a major conflict in the middle east. >> steve: jeff flock from fox business is live at the chicago merchantile exchange to preview the trading day. jeff, right after the hit, the price of oil went up about 4-5%. its gone down but the big question now is will the shifts bring the oil to the world essentially be safe traveling the straight of hormuz. >> well i don't know the answer to that, steve but i'll tell you what the markets think they know the answer to and that is that they will be safe. not only has oil stabilized i'm looking at the latest number, oil is now down almost $1 from where it was yesterday, and after that huge spike. we got over $65 a barrel yesterday, we're now at 61.82

and this is unthinkable five years ago when we were not such a huge oil producer, and now we are in some ways insulated more so than we were in the past from shocks from the middle east, but i've got to tell you, not only oil, we know gold is down as well, this is the market speaking loud and clear that they think the markets think we're done here and it's going to be deescalation from here on in those ships that transport oil will be safe, the separates won't be bombed or closed. markets speaking loud and clear and whether that's true or not i don't know these guys have a lot of money riding on the line and that's what they think. >> steve: jeff a lot of people thought the spot market with oil would be worse. it's kind of a head scratcher isn't it? >> well it is and some of it is the fact now that we are such a huge oil producer that we are

insulated. i mean, if this had happened five years ago we would have been over $100 a barrel and see a huge increases at the gas pump that's just not the case but i do think the market is thinking that we are past the crisis point for the moment. ainsley: thank you, jeff. >> brian: ten years ago the market was crashing too so it would have been a real disaster. ainsley: it's 8:30 on the east coast. we're expecting the president to be speaking this morning. iran's foreign minister says the attack was self-defense and the country does not want a war. >> brian: our next guest warns it better be the case vowing they will be blown if they come close to striking the u.s.. former cia officer brian dean wr ight joins us so brian you believe there's some degree of sleeper cells here and they could choose to rise up because the iranians say they have 100 different targets. could we actually be one of them here? >> the short answer, brother, is yes, right? so we have both good and bad news on this so let's start with

the bad news. there are unquestionably sleeper cells in the united states operated, directed by iran. we know they usually operate in one to two or three individuals, normally men, almost exclusively lebanese or iranian descent. the cia and the fbi have long- had a pulse on this threat. we have monitored it, investigated it, on occasion, arrested individuals, perhaps doubled a few of these folks back at iran so we know that the risk is there so that's the bad news that's real. the other deep concern is that we have to be right 100% of the time to mitigate these individuals, find this threat and unfortunately we're not going to be able to do that so the threat is real. we are going to unfortunately probably miss a handful of these folks who come in so that's the bad news. the good news is that because we have been investigating this threat for so long, we know most of them and most importantly, we know and we have indeed told the

iranian government that we know what they are up to and that we will strike back and if in fact they ever think about it, it will be a new 9/11, irrespective of the amount of damage that happens in this country, we will respond and leave that patient and if there's a single leader left walking around iran we will hunt them down ourselves and the other piece and i think this is so important for american people to understand. president trump what he did by killing soleimani, the fancy folks of washington will talk about the new found we've deterred them and he punched the iranians so hard in the mouth, knocked them out and put teeth down into their throat so what's important now is the iranians want to strike back they know we will take a disproportionate attack against them so they harm the head of us somewhere, we are going to respond more than they have ever thought the united states would before. that is powerful. that is important, and the american people should sleep much much easier knowing that we have somebody in the white house who is willing to take that kind of a step.

carl you've seen what happened what do you think? >> well i was interested in each of the individual responses biden was sort of of course state the obvious, the president has responsibility to describe what he's donald why he's doing it that's why the president addressed the country the other day and why he addresses him today. i don't know why but when he said democracy runs on accountability, i kept thinking, america runs on dunkin'. >> [laughter] >> i don't know why i said that but think about the other reactions. bernie sanders equated the drone strike on soleimani with vladimir putin taking dissonance in russia and around the world. so soleimani is a freedom fighter. he is somebody who is standing up for the fundamental rights of liberty and freedom that they have been doing in russia so really bernie are you that out of touch? elizabeth warren was similarly weak. she said why now? why did it happen now?

in other words, the president's being impeached and he probably did this to draw attention away from it and then mayor pete, his was i'm concerned, "i'm concerned about the process. well thank you, mayor pete, we really appreciated you being process-oriented. once again, the democrats have succeeded in a moment where they would look bigger by saying this was a bad guy, but we can disagree as to whether or not it was a prudent or wise action but the president did what he thought was necessary, to protect our country. no they've got to turn this into a complete political tribal moment and respond negatively and make the entire democratic party look weak. one of the strengths the president had was i'm going to be strong, i'm going to have a strong military, we're going to be respected, our allies are going to respect us and know we're reliable and our adversaries are going to fear us and the democrats are like san francisco democrats all over again in the mid 1980s, we're weak, we're ringing our hands, oh, terrible woes me, the president is taking actions that

could put us at risk. we were at risk, because soleimani was determined to expel us from the region. ainsley: so joe biden, he's been saying that to the president, you have to explain your strategy to the american people. that is your job as president, but back in 1995, listen to what he said. >> one fundamental weakness of the war powers resolution is that it fails to acknowledge powers that most scholars agree are inherent presidential powers my legislation corrects this deficiency. my bill enumerates instances where the president may use force. first, to repent without congressional authority at the outset. first, to repel attack on u.s. territory or u.s. forces, to retaliate against specific acts of terrorism. ainsley: what do you make of that? this hipocracy? >> well look, fond on the

democratic side has made the argument. i'd like them to make it, that this was an ill-legitimate illegal act. it's not. the president had the authority under longstanding precedent and under law to take an action to keep attacks from being made on americans and the administration has argued and they briefed congress on this that there were imminent attacks being mounted, and look in the last couple of weeks what is it now a dozen attacks on americans in iraq, including an attempt to storm the u.s. embassy? clearly being orchestrated by soleimani, there was, he was not stopping, he was not traveling and out of syria, and iraq and outside of iran. he has since 2007 been under a u.n. travel ban and yet he was so full of himself that he thought he had violated that for 12 years, he could continue to violate it and clearly, he was

active in plotting the assault on the u.s. embassy and the administration apparently had further information about additional attacks he was planning. >> everyone has a right to their opinion but when people actually made decisions for eight years that led us to this point, that allowed the russians back into the middle east, it didn't reinforce a red line, the pull whole hog out of a country and left it to iran, those are the last people that should be saying what did you do? we gave you a peaceful middle east. >> yeah, look joe biden was one of the prime supporters of the iranian nuclear deal which delivered $150 billion, much of it ended up in the hands of the kuds force at the direction of soleimani that money was spent to keep together a vast network, of proxy fighters in the middle east to attack israel, to attack america's friends and americans who expel us all in the name of a radical islamic ideology. and yet, we're supposed to sort of say oh, my god, let's ring our hands, soleimani, well this is a bad, you know, this is a

latest on these attacks. reporter: good morning again this missile attack was not a surprise to u.s. authorities they fully expected bases to be targeted and took defensive actions in advance which is likely one reason why there are no u.s. casualty, but as you mentioned, iran's supreme leader still talking tough saying he slapped america in the face, and now the focus shifts back to the white house. 15 ballistic missiles fired by iran overnight, at two military bases used by u.s. forces, one hit a base in erbil in northern iraq, four missiles failed in flight and the other 10 struck a l-assad, a huge facility visit ed by the president last christmas, a base from which drone attacks are launched. military action is not enough, and the corrupt presence of the u.s. in the region should come to an end. iran's leaders say the missiles were retaliation for the target ed killing of iran's top general and warned that israel could be next if the u.s. retaliates. iranians celebrated in the streets after the attack, waving

procedures if we're under alert for mortars or rockets, just a few months before i got there in 2007 it was rocketed. we found they had a plan to mortar it while i was there. there's an air base there, and so a flight line, a big area of land with a fence on the other side, so really, the one thing that i thought of this is that it's also one of the bases that it would be easier for iran to get information on, to kind of know where people are stationed and positioned because we've been there for so long and we can't just change where we are because we're afraid to get mortared and so rocketing there, i don't know if the narrative that iran purposely missed is true at all, but i would say that they would have the best chance of knowing where they're their target is on al-assad simply because its been around so long and so many people have been on and off to include local nation alls. answer were our thoughts and prayers are with our servicemen, just deployed to that area i know there has to be fear.
