taking? the founder of blue lives matter joins us and retired nypd lieutenant joe cardinali. let's begin with the latest threat, what is happening in iran and how it is impacting police across the country. >> when we look at what is happening in iran it directly impacts us in the united states and one of the key focuses is law enforcement, how do we protect and fortify the homeland? we look at the cyber network because iran is always been a key conductor in the cyber network and we want to fortify the cyber network with firewalls and things to that effect and we want to look to the omnipresence and fortify targets in places like new york, madison square garden, world trade center etc..

the combination of the two is focus on law enforcement. >> how do we do that, how to make sure the soft targets are protected? >> people can forget how dangerous it is and offices being deployed whether it is in domestic or foreign, whatever they can for their particular area. you will see higher visibility and a very possible threat, they have to take precautions if something were to happen. >> higher visibility, anything else? right here in new york city we know what the implications can be. >> the visibility and the public, we are used to it is new yorkers. everybody goes out and step up efforts for law enforcement and the public steps of their efforts as well. everybody knows to be the eyes and ears for something like

this. it is a joint effort but as joe said since 9/11 the game has changed and the sharing of information between all the agencies not local but worldwide, the nypd is a worldwide effort and that is where everybody stays on top of their game, sharing of information, getting heads up ahead of time to stop some of these terrorists from doing the things they do. new york is a prime target because it is such a large city, 9/11 made that perfectly clear and we need to stay vigilant all the time and the sharing of information from the nypd to the public puts everybody relieved that everybody's doing the job. >> it's great to have a reminder the public needs to do their part to help law enforcement and first responders. i want to begin with you on the next topic because it happens to be national law enforcement appreciation day. after the attacks on police we have seen across the country,

last year specifically, we saw video. how do we change the perception going forward and i will start with you on that? >> my theory on that is we have to change the political atmosphere nationwide especially in new york. i have said it before that the criminal element is emboldened by steps taken by certain politicians. they think they have the right to go out and do what they want. >> and what will happen to them? >> the idea they can go out and do this, what gives them that idea? is a few with the new laws everything is to their advantage, everything is against the police officers, we need to get back to community policing we once had where the public and the police department worked as one, not as separate entities and that, we need politicians to lead us in that direction. the nypd is always there to do that but steps are not being taken with the community. >> i want to bring up numbers so people can see them.

228 police suicides in 2019, 43 officers shot and killed in the line of duty in 2019 and just days into 2020 we have one officer killed so far. how do we make sure these numbers don't grow? >> not trying to have the increase of suicides but the water buckets and police officer fighting for his life, the parent standing around and watching a couple weeks ago and the main thing is, robbery. people no matter what rank you are stand up for one another and feel more like a family, feel appreciated, do their jobs. it doesn't help to have the new york state reform act which is being thrown back on the street as criminals and governor newsom don't support the police officers. >> if they see our leaders not supporting police officers they followed by example.
