the u.s. expected to be sent back to their home country today. this comes amid the pentagon's review of all international military students following the deadly shooting at the pensacola naval air base. todd pyro is here with the latest action to increase security. good morning, todd. >> reporter: although none of those being expelled are accused of assisting the pensacola gunman, some were believed to have connections extremist movements and several were accused of possessing child porn. you'll recall the gunman was training at the naval air station when he opened fire, killing three u.s. sailors. in response, a dod spokesperson highlighting major changes. quote, in the wake of the pensacola tragedy, the dealt of defense restricted to classroom training foreign military students from saudi arabia while we conducted a review of the foreign student yvetteing vettig

illinois died when their vehicle hit an ied during a nato support mission. they were on their first come t bat deployment and are -- combat deployment and are the first u.s. soldiers killed in the new year. the taliban is claiming responsibility. well, baltimore's commissioner to face scrutiny after a deadly weekend in the city. at least five people killed and seven injured in eight separate shootings, just on saturday. the city council president says he plans to he question what the commissioner and other leaders were doing during the bloodshed. scott, a democrat running for mayor, issued a statement, in part. this violence is heart a-breakin--heart-breaking and mp now. the commissioner insisted the officers are doing everything they can to hold criminals accountable. baltimore just came off its most violent year ever. the city has not had a year with less than 300 murders since

2014. and take a look at this. a massive fire ripping through several buildings including two apartment complexes overnight. it forced over 100 people to evacuate, spreading to both sides of the street. this happened in new yea new je. one person was injured. hundreds are without power. officials say the fire started inside one of the apartments -- inside the apartment complex that was under construction. no word on a cause. house speaker nancy pelosi defending delaying the impeachment trial as she warns of a possible coverup in the senate. but a top republican claims that it's all a political play in the race for 2020. griff jenkins is live for us in washington as president trump says the impeachment should be dismissed. good morning, griff. >> reporter: good morning, heather. after sitting on them for more than three weeks, speaker pelosi is ready to send the articles to

heather: welcome back to "fox & friends first." u.s. officials will expel at least a dozen saudi service members after an investigation into foreign military students reveals several were linked to extremist groups. this is one month after a deadly shooting at the naval air base in florida, prompting the department of defense to review safety measures. here to break down changes we can expect to the vetting process, former counter terrorism officer, dan gra dan . i want to begin with this statement from a pentagon spokesperson that talks about the training pause that is in place for saudi cervi service m. it says the department of defense restricted to classroom training while we conduct a reviewed enhancement of the foreign student vetting procedure. the training pause is in place while we implement new screening and security measures.

what do you expect the measures to be and will had the will the? >> the first measure we will hear about later this morning, they're going to be asked to leave the country. the 12 saudi nationals are out of 852 saudis that are currently here right now participating in similar programs. heather: what about those other saudi students? all the international students, we can bring that up, there's a total of over 5,000 of them training at u.s. bases currently. >> right. since 2000, over a million foreign personnel have trained either here in the u.s. or abroad, supporting our national security objectives. this is something that obviously the pentagon has been looking at since the day of the attacks and the first steps are now being undertaken by secretary of defense esper. heather: what w are we not payg

attention to closely enough? >> the attempt was to look at the background of the individuals before they get to the united states and once they get here to potentially let them fall by the wayside. i think one of the changes is a move to continuous screening, a look at social media presence, behavior in this country and paying attention to what they're doing. heather: some of the service members, the 12 who will be expelled from the u.s., were linked following this compensation were linked to the extremists and a accused of possessing child pornography. >> it had has been a huge disgrace for the regime and the saudi crown prince. heather: in terms of the reaction, what are your comments about that? >> i think the government is doing what they need to do to make sure the people coming to the united states who receive this training deserve to be here. the investigations before the individuals arrive in the u.s. have taken place overseas and particularly the foreign country will vet for them and vouch for

them, these are supposedly the best and brightest of their cohort. heather: should americans be secure in knowing that the u.s. is doing as much as they can to keep another incident like this from happening? >> absolutely. the green on blue attacks are absolutely terrible. in the last 10 years, we've had over 200 attacks and this includes attacks overseas at u.s. bases, we've seen this a lot in afghanistan, where partners that we're training turn their weapons on the u.s. ththe defense department is constantly reviewing policies and approaches on how they deal with this and this is a good step. heather: the challenges moving forward? >> the challenge is keeping the program moving forward because they're very important. iimportant.heather: thank you . the time now, 17 minutes after the top of the hour. get ready for the royal family summit. queen elizabeth meeting today with prince charles, prince

party needs to veer back to the right on some of these issues so they can attract a more moderate segment of the population. heather: kevin? >> so i think that- heather: i'm sorry, finish your thought. >> i think that it's possible that she had that in her mind. but i think basically the delay was to try to have some strategic advantage in the calling of witnesses in the senate which was unsuccessful. heather: kevin, what do you think? >> i agree in terms of the last point. i think spee the move was to moe public opinion in favor of the senate trial, calling for witnesses and documents from the administration. we're seeing in recent polling from the washington post that 65% of actually republican voters support trump's top aides coming before the senate to testify, folks like john bolton and mick mulvaney. i think that was part of the speaker's calculus which is a smart calculus, as we're seeing now, even john bolton saying he's willing to testify, less

about playing party politics in the lead-up to iowa. heather: that actually moves us into our second topic, and we wanted to know what you think about this. less than one month from the caucuses, we have this poll out of iowa showing that voters are split on impeachment. so how do you think this will impact the polls? >> i think that it's possible that this impeachment has not moved the polls and will to deteriorate for the democrats. obviously, all the republican party, the vast majority of republicans do not want to see the president removed from office and a good portion of the democrats want to see the president removed from office. the target market are the independent. with independents it seems to me the polls are slipping in favor of removal. the economy is get. the be president justify just d

>> very significant day and it's very important that with the queen presiding over this meeting with prince of wales, with william, with harry, and with meghan, apparently participating by telephone, that the groundwork for some form of agreement after the bombshell announcement had that harry and meghan were stepping down as senior royals last wednesday, some form of agreement which can be worked on subsequently. it's going to take a long time. there are multiple issues -- heather: the queen is saying within 72 hours. what do we expect to be covered at the summit? >> i assure you, it's probably going to take longer than 72 hours, probably that will be just the kernel, the gist of it.

they may not necessarily reach an agreement. there's been all sorts of noise about kiss and tell documentaries and the like, if they don't, from harry and meghan. this is from tom bratby who did the documentary of them in southern africa. what's on the agenda? they want to live in britain, in the cottage, the taxpayers renovated for them. and a north america, that could extend to canada and california subsequently. the security fee would be enormous. that must be settled. then subsequently they want to be financially self-sufficient. most of their money comes from the prince of wales, 95%, 5% from the sovereign fund, that involves travel expenses. how will that be worked out? heather: apparently they've
