most is that their leaders lied about something. they tried to cover it up. they try to suppress evidence of it, they tried to -- they lied to the people, tried to make it seem like the plane crash was america's fault. it's a complicated and dangerous matter. i see the president is getting involved in a little bit, there are some tweets about this saying "don't kill your people." i think that should be the position of the u.s., but i do think we should be cautious in getting involved when it comes to those type of matters as well. >> melissa: that's what republican congressman mac thornberry said in essence, less listen to that. >> we are seeing a level of dissent that is higher. i think the blatant lies about shooting down the civilian airliner has caused their people to say, what else are they lying about? you see the dissent going up, but i don't think we should assume, and it is certainly not the u.s. policy to say, okay, time for a new government. >> melissa: jeannie, that is
9:06 am
the fine line there, right? it is not actually our business who their government is. before it it is not, the president, we remember in his remarks last week, we are not interested in regime change, but i think in my mind, there are two real questions here, one is, does respond to all of these protests? there on the brink of an economic disaster, their own people protesting against the government. do they respond by trying to turn the tables against the united states? do they take any action, do their proxies take any action against the united states to sort of rile up sentiment against the u.s.? number two, is there a push in the u.s. or elsewhere for regime change in iran? over the weekend, the shah of iran to son who is living in bethesda, maryland, was tweeting. so he was tweeting that this was not an error, this was a crime against humanity, that the regime has to go. he is the crown prince. he would be in waiting to go right back there. there is a lot of balls in the air, so to speak, on what could
9:07 am
be the next step here. >> melissa: harris, stan hoffman made an interesting point earlier saying that it doesn't mean that that would be what comes next. it could be that there is someone, within the regime, a boris yeltsin type person who sees that what's going on is not sustainable. he is more of a government figure who is perhaps more moderate and could be some sort of transition government. >> harris: you know it is interesting about that, melissa. that means that that person is in waiting anyway. if you will recall, we saw the government trying to gin up that anti-american support in the streets after the death of the general soleimani. we saw that. millions of people, not representative of the entire country, but in the streets. it took just a lie by the government, and an incredible tragedy. those 176 people. for people to wake back up to those two things, i would government lies to us, iran, and the economy is tough.

47% inflation. it took that reality to bring back, i think what you're saying could be true, melissa. that person is just there. willing to capture, in a moment, i don't know if we are supporting that, would be take over regime or person, but you had to have something waiting in the wings. this is a very tender situation, now the iranians are making mistakes for the world to see. >> jeanne: one of the big concerns after president trump ordered the strike to kill qasem soleimani, it was exactly what you said, harris, that wit it would unify the iranian people towards fighting against the united states answered of providing coverage for the ayatollah to say i'm not the main bad guy. the bad guys the united states of america. that clearly has not happened, i think what we are seeing right now is not just new people that have woken up and said oh, the situation is so bad, let me protest, it's just further aggravating a situation that was already there.
9:09 am
we're seeing really desperate images of people that are willing to risk their life to try to change the situation. i think president trump is dead said on doing exactly what president obama did not do when he decided not to support the green movement. >> harris: we have some breaking news, let's get this out. the worldwide conversation right now that's going on about the royal family in england has a new bit of information now. buckingham palace has just released a statement after that very high level meeting that the queen of england was holding today. her majesty put this out via her people. "today, my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family. my family and i are entirely supportive of harry and meghan's desire to create a new life as a young family, although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the royal family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family. harry and meghan have made clear

that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new life. it has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the suffixes will spend time in canada and the u.k. these are complex matters for my family to resolve. there isn't some more work to be done, but i have asked that the final decisions be reached in the coming days." a fascinating turn of events and all of this. we knew that that high-level meeting was going on, so we will continue to watch the story, carly, i know you will have a lot to say about this because he reporting on this so i look forward to that. just a real quick top line for you. >> carley: this is a sign from the queen to tell everyone to calm down about this, grandma has got it, family has got it, were going to be united's force going forward, it will be really interesting to see how the finances play out in this whole thing. more coming up i'm sure. >> harris: the queen has spoken, we will move on. michael bloomberg is promising to spend big dollars on the 2020

they're going to have to talk to voters. >> melissa: let's not forget, president trump himself said several times he would like to call witnesses. he wants to be, not just acquitted because this thing is dismiss. he wants a hearing. from that perspective, you do have republicans out there who were saying, let's hear the whole story. >> lawrence: on the flip side, hunter biden, joe biden, democrats don't want to call them. if you want full fairness, let's make this a full trial. >> harris: i would say this, just from the perspective of anybody listening to the president's push for that. would it be because he wants full exoneration? yes. they could also be that the longer that we talk impeachment, i mean, republicans are raising money like it's nobody's business. on the topic of impeachment. >> carley: who knows, everyone is assuming john bolton's testimony would hurt president trump. we don't even know what he was going to say.

>> melissa: 13 former white house press secretaries and government officials have written an open letter calling for the return of the white house press briefings. a traditional one that has not been held since march 11th, more than 300 days ago ever since stephanie grisham took over as press secretary. the group wrote this, "we respectfully urge the resumption of regular press briefings

he disappeared. because i love the queen, i'm sort of a traditionalist, no, not really, harris. but i did love the white house press briefings, but i have to say, times have changed. i don't think they were at all effective because, you know, people were just getting that information and pushing it out. in this day and age, i'm not sure we need them the way we did before this 24 hours news cycle. everything has change, the way we convey information. while i did love them, i'm not sure they were at all effective at this point. >> melissa: it's incredibly difficult to be the white house press secretary, especially in this administration, we did see a lot of grandson income especially during sean spicer's time at the podium. we all agree the more communication the better, but this is a communication present. just remember at the nato semi, all of the world leaders mocking president trump for holding these 40 minute long press conferences. you can say a lot of things about president trump, but lack

of communication is not one of them. >> harris: maybe there are issues the president doesn't address when he comes out his driveway to talk to reporters there, but the white house as they respond to those comments, you can call them and submit those questions, or go ask them if its policy detail or that sort of thing, and they respond. it seems that the only thing the reporters aren't getting is there time on camera. >> harris: that's really interesting. bus word? >> lawrence: i just think it's petty. if i'm the american people, and material from the source, i don't want to hear from the middleman. i went to go straight to the horses mouth, whether it is him tweeting or going before he gets on a plane or giving press conferences, i think i'm a tear from the president. see manuel i physically have to screwed up the stairs because coming up in about 9 minutes on "outnumbered over time" we will hear from stephanie grisham life. i will get a reaction to the latest on impeachment, how's the president feels about the protest in iran, and if she'll ever be convinced to resume

you have it now. at the same time, winning the fight to review of the expensive, unfair, and very unpopular individual mandate... see what he did there can maggie brag on himself at the same time he was taking a shot at michael bloomberg. all right, jeanne zaino, i have a theory because i'm a conspiracy theorist in general. because it's fun. i'm not sure michael bloomberg is really run for president. i feel like maybe this is a way around campaign finance laws. if he's on a candidate and on some ballots he can spend even more money. i think it raises its profile in case he wants to run in the future. if he had been really serious about running for president this time he would have gotten an earlier. i think this serves all budget purposes. he can go out there and trash trump, help the democrats, get rid of him. at the same time, reason's profile of the future, maybe he really wants to do it. what do you think of my theory? >> jeanne: i think that's a great theory about the spending prayed he wouldn't have been able to spend in the way he is now, and i think we just said is absolutely 100% right.
