and they have relee -- released documents that one of rudy giuliani's associates talked with nunes' top aide. >> and they're burning the weekend oil. >> that's right, we're just beyond the 5 p.m. deadline where they put it forth and speaker of the house enjoyed late night tv. >> there are some who said they wanted to be impeached. just for the record, being impeached is a bad thing, right? >> and you're impeached forever. [applause] >> no matter what the senate does, it can never be erased. >> last night, house democrats released new documents showing what they say is more evidence of the trump administration wanting to pressure top ukrainian officials to investigate joe biden. the documents show messages between lev parnas and associate

a rudy giant and a top aide of devin nunes, a leader defender of the president and the messages shows that harvey and parnas were working to arrange interviews with ukrainians claiming wrongdoing by the bidens. >> she says they don't want to hear from anyone else. >> there is no need for additional witnesses. we need to remember this is going to extend quite a while if you have additional witnesses, it will go on much longer. we have several senators who would rather be out on the campaign trail. >> and leader mcconnell, hasn't shown resolution. we expect that we will have votes on the witnesses on tuesday, but can't be sure until we see the resolution that mcconnell has put together. >> it's quiet here on capitol hill, but we expect the foot traffic to increase as we approach that 5 p.m. eastern deadline. leland. >> all right. and we will wait for that to

break it down, if it happens. lucas, thank you. >> gillian. >> well, as the trial getting underway in the senate, president trump's legal teamworking through the weekend. we're hearing they're drafting legal response to the two official articles of impeachment. they're due by 6 p.m. this evening, mark meredith is in palm beach where the president is spending the weekend with the latest details. mark, what is the thinking this weekend? >> gillian, president trump is only going to be in florida for a certain period of time. they're gearing up for what will likely be a historic and busy week ahead. as you mentioned we expect to see some paper work filed a couple of hours from now, and while we're still unclear exactly what the impeachment strategy is going to be from the defense team, the white house says it's confident in its legal defense team that they've put forth. >> i'm in a lot of meeting with pat cipollone. he's strong, but he's definitely in the silent. he and jay seculow are running

this team and they'll do it flawlessly and you can believe that we're prepared for whatever happens in the senate. >> well, the white house has selected some eight lawyers to represent the president in his defense. they include some high profile names, including former independent counsel, ken starr, someone the president criticized years ago as well as harvard professor alan dershowitz. dershowitz has been telling the media he'll play a small part in this. and the eight people on the screen. >> i see ken starr, a man who pushed the weakness impeachment case certainly in my lifetime, and now he's up here to defend the strongest impeachment case in my lifetime. well, that's their choice, but it's a weird choice. >> the white house has put out a statement as they announced who the their lawyers are going to be.

it's time for congress to turn its attention back to the work of the people and leave sham political investigations like this one in the past. of course the president insisted that impeachment is something that his opposition has been working on ever since he took office back in january of 2017, but democrats insist that this is all about trying to ensure corruption is not tolerated. we're looking to see if the president makes any comments on twitter. we don't expect to see him on camera today and he'll be in washington before heading out of an economic summit in switzerland. >> mark, and one of those folks, alan dershowitz already pushing back and saying overnight, he's not part of the full-time team, he's more part-time, he's part of a consultant and we'll keep our eye on that, too. >> he wanted to present a nonpartisan view of impeachment. >> he did. >> it's hard to imagine there's any nonpartisan views of impeachment. a man who knows that all too well, a man involved in the last

impeachment trial. former congressman and impeachment manager, bob barr, who was quite in demand these days on the television networks. we appreciate you making time for us. we'll put up the list of house impeachment managers, those who had had your job or in this current impeachment or have your job in this current impeachment. what is this weekend like for them, sir? >> very busy. contrairy to what senators leah and schumer just said on your show, the defense team that the white house has put up here is very strong and you can see that they anticipate various arguments on the part of the impeachment team. they are prepared for it, they have individuals from the constitutional law background, they have individuals who are very familiar with the process of the senate. they have lawyers that are very close with president clinton so i think it's important, a very
9:07 am
strong defense team that the white house put forward. >> we're looking at a picture of the house managers, those who had had your job back during the clinton impeachment or you had their job during the clinton impeachment. take us through that process. what happens? what are they preparing for for the coming weeks? >> it's a little bit different from the job that we had. the job that we had back in 1999 was to layout the evidence that had already been presented in the house that established that president clinton violated federal laws. in accord with what we viewed then and i view now as the standard in the constitution for impeachment. the job that these house managers have is very different, their job is to try and convince the united states senate or at least some members of the yits senate that a president should be removed from office even though he violated no law because the articles of impeachment now allege no
9:08 am
violation of any law. >> part of their argument conceivably is going to center around these new documents that came out from lev parnas who says is a questionable kwig, shadowy from the ukrainian oligarch and he himself has been charged with a number of crimes. this is what david french wrote about the latest batch of documents and known to hang out with rudy giuliani. and the support for the narrative that trump was pushing for the ukraine to investigate joe biden and they paint a picture of a slap-dash clown car diplomacy referring to president trump, rudy giuliani, others dealing with ukraine. take out that part of this.
9:09 am
is parnas helpful or hurtful to the democrat's days? >> he's utterly irrelevant to the democrat's case. if they believe that parnas is a key, a linchpin to their case against president trump why didn't they interview him and bring him before the house intelligence or the house judiciary committees? this is no secret what he was doing, he was giving interviews on various networks last fall, yet, the house managers, the house intelligence and judiciary committees, that is didn't call him and now they want to call him? that's not right. that's not proper and that's not-- that has no precedent. speaking of precedent. where do we go on this issue of witnesses in the senate? during the clinton impeachment, we didn't see monica lewinsky or betty curry or vernon jordan testify because of the agreement between the majority leader and the minority leader in the senate. do you anticipate that kind of
9:10 am
agreement coming out for this impeachment hearing or is this going to be the made for tv free for all everybody from unt hadar biden to les parnas to john bolden testifying? >> one a has to keep in mind. both senators leahy and senator schumer now clamoring for witnesses and new evidence, were part of the unanimous vote in the senate last time around that didn't want any new evidence and didn't want any new witnesses. and i suspect that the majority under senator mcconnell's leadership will decide not to have witnesses and not to introduce new evidence although i think the democrats will vote for that. i think that the republicans will hold strong and say, look, that's not the job of the senate. we're not going to do what the house refused to do. >> it is noteworthy that as the shoe, as you point out, is on
9:11 am
different feet for this version of the clinton impeachment, people have sudden views on what is and is not constitutional prerogative and meaning, from your perspective, this idea of a condensed timeline we're hearing now. mitch mcconnell has been awfully tight-lipped about his plans, but the idea of 24 hours of opening statements that you had before the senate during the clinton impeachment may be the same 24 hours, but only condensed into two days, does that play well for the prosecution for the managers or for president trump's defense team? >> i think it puts additional pressure on the managers, because as i say, they have a far tougher job than we had back then, because we had clear evidence after criminal case. the evidence was already very, very clear, in this case, they have a very important fundamental argument that they have to overcome and that is the constitution requires commission of a crime on the part of a president before they can be
9:12 am
removed from office. and the house did not show that, and now the managers are going to have to try and convince the senators notwithstanding that, they should still remove president trump from office. >> well, we know that you, like many of those who are on the impeachment manager list this time around served time as a prosecutor. you as a federal prosecutor and certainly appreciate your expertise in sharing with us here on a saturday, sir. we'll talk to you soon. >> my pleasure being with you. >> thank you. all right, a lot more on this tomorrow. chris wallace has an exclusive interview with the chairman of the house judiciary committee, south carolina republican senator lindsey graham. he has things to say how he views the impeachment inquiry and plus, howard kurtz is going to analyze the coverage starting up to the impeachment in the senate and media buzz starting tomorrow 11 a.m. eastern. >> we're taking you to live pictures now coming out of

reaction to a fiery public sermon coming yesterday at friday prayers in tehran from iran supreme leader, the ayatollah khamenei, the first time he's done this in this forum. among other things, he branded the united states clowns, arrogant and cowardly, to which as you can imagine, president trump fired back with a few tweets overnight. let's read one. the so-called supreme leader of iran not so supreme lately had some nasty things to say about the united states and europe, and the people are suffering, he should be careful with his words. one more report from last night, a fundraiser at mar-a-lago and president trump spoke at that and apparently according to transcripts what he said he recounted the minutes leading up to the drone strike which ended up in the killing of the top general qasem soleimani and came up with another reason for doing this, it's another reported quote from the president, he was

country. adam, thanks. >> another trove of evidence in the college admissions scandal has now been made public. newly revealed e-mail shows how laurie loughlin and her husband massey mow giannuli got their daughters in on the crew team despite the fact that neither one of them actually played the sport. so far 14 people have been sentenced in this case. they range from six months in prison to no jail time at all. a big gap there. joining us now to break down why this is the case and what it all means, for lori loughlin's defense strategy. thank you for being with us. i want you to break do you know the evidence that we're seeing and first i want to pull down the e-mail from high school where the two daughters went.
9:27 am
l.a. merrymont high school, and the counselor to usc says conducted routine counselor call with usc to check up on dozens applicants that year. wh when we got to that, she was flagged for the crew team and i had no knowledge of crew and based on what i knew of her doubted she was involved in crew. so, here we have, if i'm mott mistaken, we have at high school telling the college that neither of these two women, you know, like played any sports at all. >> and that plays right into lori loughlin's hands and the hands of other defendants in these cases. i think the ultimate black eye is going to be on usc and other schools who are involved. because some of the other e-mails made it crystal clear that the school knows what's going on and other e-mails usc is basically telling people, including lori loughlin, hey,
9:28 am
look, your kid can get in if you consider getting a donation and that's not message that usc grads want out and not the message that usc wants. it's a black eye for the schools. gillian: usc recently fired three top officials from their athletic departments who they say was involved in this operation. is that not enough holding the athletics department accountable? >> no, i mean, that's throwing someone into the mix and saying, look, it's a sacraficial lamb. these practices have been going on at top schools, including harvard, yale, princeton, usc for the better part of 100 years. it's a valid defense and now lori loughlin and the other parents are making it and i promise people at usc are cringing. >> part of the argument that loughlin and others and her husband are making, it's not just about these departments at these problem schools, it's about this wider culture that these schools have actually created where it turns these parents into monsters. you know, they'll run over your
9:29 am
grandmother to get your, you know, second cousin into some program. it's a cultural problem in the united states that, you know, the wider community has to grapple with. it sounds like you're kind of on board with that? >> yeah, absolutely and i think that's also a valid defense for lori loughlin, she's going to say you'll a parent trying to do the best for my kid. i was overzealous, is that a crime especially at a school of this sort, stuff has been going on for so long. usc will have a black eye. gillian: she was doing before she switched her defense strategy. at first she was saying we don't know about this. we were in the dark, we didn't know we were taken for this ride so let's pull up this new piece of evidence we've got. an e-mail from rick singer, this recruit/master mind, to lori loughlin's husband.
9:30 am
he says laurie and mossy met with usc need for pdf and test, and a picture of her like a real athlete, too. isn't this now case closed? >> i don't think it's case closed, but is certainly doesn't make lori loughlin look good and 1.5 million e-mails are out there, another 500,000 documents so i will guarantee you this is not the last of the bad e-mails. >> what i mean is, she can make this case about the broader problem of this competitive climate, but this specific e-mail here shows that the three of them, i think isser, mossimo giannuli, her husband and lori herself, they all knew and admitted to themselves, none of them, they were not athletes and
9:31 am
photos of them where they looked like they were athletes. she can make the case that it's somebody else's fault, too, but this clearly the blame rests with her at least in part. >> that's right, she has top defense lawyers and they're going to basically try to get the jury and judge to look away from those documents and look at the broader culture, but those e-mails are bad for lori loughlin. it makes it crystal clear that she knew what she was doing. and the $64,000 question, was that a prescribe she offered or what the parents do for kids -- for parents to get their kids in prestigious universities. gillian: a statement from usc, responding after these documents have been made public. they're saying in a statement, what was offered to the giannulis was neither special or unique, tours, classes, and meetings, and to flag and the outcome of the admissions

process, it's not a substitute for otherwise being qualified for usc. that's the pushback from the school. andrew, thank you for joining us this afternoon, we appreciate it. >> anytime. gillian: you bet. leland: we'll be right back as we look at the women's marches around the country. i don't keep track of regrets.

>> the democrats campaigning for 2020 out now in full force in iowa. they're looking to rein it in over the crucial final days before the state's first in the nation caucuses. ellison barber is there tracking all of them. ellison, what are they up to today? >> hey, gillian, yeah, it's less than 20 days until the iowa caucuses. at this point every single day matters. the candidates know that. we just heard four of them speak at an education event in this building behind me, but for some of that the impeachment trial is creating additional obstacles. there are ways to campaign in iowa from outside of the state,
9:37 am
but every single candidate impacted by the impeachment trial says that's less than ideal. iowans, they value candidate to voter face time and impeachment. you have four senators, frontrunners in iowa running for president and they're having to adjust their campaign plans in the final stretch. amy klobuchar, michael bennet, bernie sanders bernie sanders and they have to return and others like about pete buttigieg remain on the ground. and andrew yang is just starting to make stops in iowa every day between now and the february 3rd caucuses and the senators seem to be banking on the idea most voters know they have a constitutional duty to be at the impeachment trial. if they could they would be in iowa right now. senator amy klobuchar just spoke to reporters after speaking to the iowa state education, and
9:38 am
she plans to double down and campaign harder, reminding reporters she made roughly 10 stops a day during her iowa bus tour. and with the impeachment trial she'll have to do more. >> i'm balancing and found some way to get here. i'm not canceling events and that's how i run my life and how i'm going to run this campaign to the very end. >> warren, sanders and klobuchar all are expected to send surrogates and family members to campaign in plieses like iowa. primarily iowa and a little m new hampshire as well because that caucus happened eight days after this one so they can have a presence here even though they're not physically here. amy klobuchar is polling under 15% in the state. and her campaign say they plan to skype and phone into some events here in iowa. gillian. gillian: it's a unique political conundrum these dems are facing at this point.
9:39 am
we'll check back with you next hour for more on that. thank you. leland: all right. there are a lot of undecided voters still in iowa at least according to the polls so with that we bring in doug wagner, the cedar rapids radio host. pick up where ellison left off, doug. do iowa caucus goers ding warren, sanders, klobuchar, bennet for not being there these next couple of weeks? >> you know, i don't think they do. first of all, thanks for having me on the program again, leland. i don't think they do because everybody understands it's a constitutional dutiy and that they're physically required to be there in the first place. the one thing that is interesting, you had the des moines register, and the poll that came out before the last debate in iowa and the only other poll since then is a poll that switched over in the last two months, it's gone up from 28%, people who were firm on their first choice to 43% so
9:40 am
they're starting to get to that point. one of the things that was unique about the iowa caucuses is that you have to have a minimum of 15% support in order to make each successive round. so it's really critical that if you are not a first choice at least you're somebody's second choice. leland: there's a lot of discussion in terms of how this works with the undecideds, and how barack obama was able to pull it out. and the 2020 race is a mess, uncertainty verging on anxiety and panic, and the iowans feel as they seek to have a nominee that could beat the president. is there a divide between who they like and who they think could beat him versus president
9:41 am
trump? >> and what's interesting the same monmont poll, the top four issues they had were health care, climate change, foreign affairs and last, and only four of them had double digits and at 10% was somebody who could beat donald trump so it's in the top four, but it's still well down the line at this point and really, you only have four of the top candidates that are polling above 15% at this point, that biden, sanders, warren and pete buttigieg. amy klobuchar is bringing up the back and she is ate the only one really that picked up a lot of momentum in addition with joe biden since it looks like against the battle between sanders and warren at this point. leland: we don't know whether it's the weather or whether just the connection from cedar rapids, but we're getting a little bit of breakup there on your shot. appreciate your expertise, as doug noted it's iowa caucus season and it's already snowing with wind chills near zero out
9:42 am
