hi, kitty. >> reporter: hi, eric. this is the official announcement that we've been waiting for. it outlines the future plans for harry and hand. -- and meghan. it outlines their position in the future, whether it will be royal or not royal commitments they'll be stepping down from and it will come into place in spring this year. there were two statements in the u.k., one from the queen and the other from buckingham palace. the statement from the queen is amicable, wishes the couple best in the future, she emphasizes that that they remain part of the family. however, they will not carry out royal duties on behalf of the queen. they will no longer have the titles, duke and duchess of sussex and they will not receive any public funds for any of their future activities. they've also agreed to pay -- repay millions of dollars in renovation costs for their windsor home. the issue of their security

costs, however, have not been discussed publicly. now, as we know, meghan has already left the for canada. harry is expected to join her there soon afterwards. what they will do there remains unclear. it seems likely they'll spend more time over there than in the u.k. the queens has expressed her disappointment at the decision by the couple to lead much more private lives if the future but she says she understands the difficulties they've been having being in the public eye. she said she respects their decision for a more independent life. now, the couple had clearly been very unhappy for some time. this decision certainly takes the pressure off them but certainly many questions asked still about their future and the big step for harry to take. he will remain prince harry but this is a huge life change. he's obviously always been part of the royal family and pretty uncertain future lies ahead for him. eric: king edward abd abdicaten

1936. some people see echos of that. we will continue our coverage of this. arthel: a storm of a different kind here at home, a winter storm impacting millions across america. this system is dumping heavy snow from the midwest to the northeast. the nations' busiest airport, o'hare, in chicago, canceling hundreds of flights, more than 1200, in fact, flights have been delayed across the nation, including 500 cans considerations according to -- cancancellations according to flight you a wear. meteorologist adam klotz is here with the forecast. how long will the current storm last? >> the storm will be moving across the country for another 12 hours before it runs out to sea. we're getting the brunt of it across portions of the east coast, new york city to boston. this does linger of the backside of this system, what was in chicago, now lifting into portions of michigan, over the
1:04 pm
next 12 hours or so we'll be tracking this as it makes its move, bringing with it a whole lot of wind and continuing to bring snow and a host of problems across new england and across the upper midwest where we have a blizzard warning across the dakota as we're tracking what is continuing to be a pretty nasty winter storm. here is the forecast. you can pay attention to the time stamp in the corner. you get an idea of how quickly this is moving. we're not seeing huge snowfall totals in a lot of these areas. by the time we get to 10:00 p.m. a lot of the snow is in new england, the backside continuing to clear out. it is going to be windy and it's going to really cold when the system moves out. you see temperatures falling down into the teens in some cases, back a little farther off towards the west, down in the single digits. that's going to continue to be the case. and then i can run you all the way to monday morning and you see how cold it gets across a huge area, the snow completely gone by the time you get late into sunday and monday. but the temperatures, boy it's

bringing winter with it, a lot of places in the teens, places back in the single digits and into some of the negative temperatures. how much snowfall are we talking about here up and down the east coast? i do think at this point not a lot of additional snow. dc just a dusting, they got maybe an inch or so early this morning, the same in philadelphia. we're looking at a toll tall of an -- total of an inch or two in new york city. the place where we'll see additional snow is higher elevations, upstate in new england, areas getting up to 6 or 7 inches. in boston, maybe only 2 to 3 inches of snow. here in new york, if you peaked out the window, we've seen -- peeked out the window, we've seen a little bit of snow out there. arthel: the rain will move in and wash it all aaway. it is winter. add many dam, thank you. eric: -- adam. eric: in washington, democrats hope to reveal new records that

indicate that the former associate of rudy giuliani, lev parnas, it could increase pressure on republicans to call witnesses in the senate impeachment trial of the president. the documents link parnas to an aide to congressman devin nunes, the top ranking republican on the committee, a outspoken spokesperson on the issue. republicans continue to push back against the idea of any possible witnesses, saying that could have an impact on the length of the trial. >> i do hope that we can all come together, we can look at the evidence as presented and then decide that there is no need for additional witnesses. we do have to remember that this is going to extend quite a while if you have additional witnesses, so it will go on much longer. eric: mark meredith is in palm beach, florida, near mar-a-lago, and speaking with lucas tomlinson live on cap l toll hill. >> reporter: we're one hour away from the deadline by house

democrats to bring the formal charges against the president, the white house will have an hour to respond. one of the democrats who hopes to unseat president trump spoke a short time ago at a new hampshire rally. >> what we are about, it's not only defeating the most dangerous president in the history of the united states, and you are going to see how dangerous this person is in the trial that's coming up this week, and by the way, i wish i could be back in new hampshire and iowa but i will be in washington doing my constitutional duty. >> reporter: last night house democrats released new documents showing what they claim is more evidence that the trump administration wanted to pressure top ukrainian officials to investigate joe biden. the documents show text messages between lev parnas, an associate of rudy giuliani and derek harvey, a aide to congressman devin nunes, a leading defender of the president. the messages show them working

to arrange interviews with ukrainian officials who claim to have dirt on the bidens. bill cassidy framed the president's impeachment this way. >> look at the basic argument, did the president withhold funds beyond a mandatory date of release to the ukrainians. there's going to be a lot of i call it monkey dust, people throwing dust around, trying to distract from what is the crux of the issue, if w look at the crux and remain focused on the crux, we'll establish whether or not the president did something illegal or not. >> reporter: it's unclear if the democrats are going to call any witnesses. if they do, the republicans will want to hear from hunter biden. eric: thanks so much. arthel: as the senate continues to prepare for the trial, president trump's legal teamworking on a draft response to the article of impeachment, articles of impeachment, mark meredith is in palm beach, florida, near where the president is spending the weekend. mark, what's the word? >> reporter: arthel, the clock
1:09 pm
is ticking, we are expecting to see additional documents, paperwork, responses filed later tonight and throughout the rest of the weekend. as you can imagine, there is a lot of work happening behind the scenes as this impeachment trial is set to get underway ons tuesday. late friday we learned who will be he defending the president when it comes to the senate, the white house announcing the eight member legal team that includes eight lawyers, including famous face as well as the people we were expecting, including jay seculo, ken starr, he'll be on the team and so is alan dershowitz. he put out a statement on friday, defining what he will be doing for the trial. he wrote that while professor dershowitz is nonpart p san, parn it comes to the impeachment of -- he believes the issues at state go to the heart of the constitution. he is participating in the impeachment trial to defend the integrity of the constitution and to pro vent the creation of
1:10 pm
a dangerous constitutional precedent. the white house has accused democrats of plotting to peach the president since he took office and one of the questions will be how will the impeachment trial impact the presidential election this year and what it will mean for the president in the short term. as far as we can tell, the president plans to keep his schedule on track. he's supposed to go to davos, switzerland for an economic summit early next week. it's only supposed to be a brief trip. the president is expected to be back, he has campaign rallies scheduled for the end of the month and he is supposed to deliver the state of the union. there is no indication that that would get postponed or changed if an impeachment trial was still underway but the timing of all of this really is anyone's guess. a arthel. arthel: mark meredith, thank you. eric: we know that the impeachment trial will temporary sideline senators who are running for president. they're trying to rally support in iowa before the trial keeps them in washington. some predicted that could help boost candidates who are not

senators, like former south bend mayor pete buttigieg as he goes up against elizabeth warren bernie sanders. allison bar wear bette barber i, iowa. >> reporter: four candidates spoke at an education forum in west des moines earlier today. senator amy klobuchar was one of them. after she finished speaking to the educators in the room, she came and spoke to reporters who were gathered nearby. she was asked whether or not she is worried or whether or not she thinks impeachment will hinder her performance here in iowa. she said no, she thinks she just has to work harder. >> i got here and i'm not cancelling events. that is how i run my life and how i'm going to run this campaign until the very end. we're going to have to double down and work even harder. ten events a days is what we did when i did my bus tour, i guess we'll have to do even more. >> reporter: remember, there are four senators still running for
1:12 pm
the democratic nomination. two of them are frontrunners. in iowa most of the polls have biden, buttigieg, sanders and warren at the top, warren and sanders have to go back to dc while biden and buttigieg can remain on the ground in iowa. the addition of social media has helped campaigns in the past. president trump didn't spend a lot of time physically in iowa but he was able to talk to people on cable news as well as twitter and that worked for him. he didn't win iowa in the caucuses, ted cruz did, that's because iowa is different than a lot of other states. iowa votes first. they tend to go to a lot of town halls to hear from multiple candidates. polls suggest on the democratic side around 50% are still trying to decide who to vote for. warren, sanders and klobuchar, they have talked about alternate ways of trying to campaign when they have to go back to dc, sending surrogates as well as

family members in their place. amy klobuchar said her campaign is working on trying to figure out ways where she could skype and phone in when she's back in dc. eric: allison, in a frigid des moines, where it is now 9 degrees allison, thank you. the royal bombshell from buckingham palace announcing prince harry's and meghan markle's shocking decision of to step out of official royal duties. how the britains are reacting. we'll have coverage throughout the next two hours. both parties looking to call witnesses at the senate impeachment trial, who could be called, what they could say and will there be a political price to pay. >> we'll have a vote upon witnesses. i'll go back to what i said earlier. we can't lower the threshold. we have to keep this threshold high. the house should build a case, frankly, they had time to do it, had they chose not to exercise that time. man, i'm thinking tacos. hey hey! you guys look like foodies. would you like to try our trashy back ribs? oh, that sounds great...

>> if they do take witnesses, i think what you just r hard is exactly right that it's going to be fair, we're going to follow the principle of reciprocity, which means if the prosecution gets a witness, the defense is going to get a witness. eric: that is senator ted cruz talking about the battle over witnesses. this as the impeachment trial of president trump now underway in
1:18 pm
the senate and with the 2020 presidential election just eight months away, witnesses brought in to testify on either side could have political repercussions if there are any witnesses. anita kumar joins us, white house correspondent for politico. tuesday, 1:00 p.m., the trial resumes. what do you predict? do you think the senators and the nation will be hearing from witnesses or not? >> i stopped predicting but i can tell you that the white house and senate leadership are very much in lockstep on this, in that they do not want witnesses and ultimately senate republicans control this, control the trial with the rules, so if the senate majority leader mitch mcconnell doesn't want it i would say it's possible, probable, there will not be witnesses. eric: he talked about making a decision after the opening arguments. do you think anything will change that position? >> well, probably not. but look, we're looking at just a few people. we need the -- the republicans
1:19 pm
need -- rather, the democrats need just four senators to side with them and say they want witnesses and we heard some of them, susan collins, mitt romney and others saying they're likely to want witnesses. so probably about three have said they do, they just need a fourth person to say that. they are waiting to hear what the house says and what the white house says to decide whether they want to. eric: that's a really thin margin. i mean, we've got susan collins, murkowski has been talking about possible witnesses, all they need is one. would they buck their party, do you think and decide that? >> well, remember those three or four that we've mentioned are leally tough spots -- really tough spots, vulnerable situations for their re-elections and feeling a lot of pressure at home to have a fair trial, to have a full trial, and so they are hearing from constituents. they're also getting a lot of heat from organizations that are airing ads in their states, doing robocalls, all sorts of
1:20 pm
things. so they are hearing from people and they're feeling that. so i think that they'll wait. they don't want to say anything until after these opening statements from the house and from the white house to make that decision. eric:.eric: we have a list of o wants whom to testify. the democrats candidates, john bolton as you mentioned as well as the president wants hunter biden and the former vice president. there's talk of a one on one deal. do you think it is at all possible that we'll see maybe john bolton or somebody, he said he wants to testify, is waiting for court decisions and then hunter biden. >> right. i think that's what senate majority leader mitch mcconnell is afraid of, he's afraid of it's going to be sort of a free-for-all. if the democrats ge someone, the republicans want someone. he doesn't want a long, protracted trial, he doesn't want this to go on for two months. he wants to get it over as quickly as possible and get on with the rest of the business. you know, get on to campaigning, get on to everything else. so he's going to be very carefully watching this.
1:21 pm
i think even though we knew that the president wanted witnesses and he's been talking about that with all sorts of people, i understand that he wants hunter biden, he wants others. he has come to mitch mcconnell's thinking, he knows the safer route for him and for republicans is no witnesses at all. and so i think he's really letting mitch mcconnell take that lead and do what he thinks is the right thing to do. eric: the republicans do that you know what the democrats are going to say, they're going to say the fix is in, they that the republicans stacked the deck and it's an unfair process but the republicans could say oh, yeah, okay, where's hunter. >> right. i mean, you're exactly right. i think no matter what happens here, the democrats can say the republicans controlled the process. they control the rules. they're in charge. and it wasn't a fair process. they're already saying that. they've been saying that for weeks. no matter who wins out and what witnesses are called, someone is going to be unhappy and someone's going to say it's unfair and so that's where 2020
1:22 pm
comes in. that's where the election comes in. those are the things we're going to be hearing on the campaign trail, not just for president but also house races and senate races. that's what the opponents are going to criticize for, they're tgoing to say you only wanted this person to testify, not the other person. that's what the races are about this coming november. eric: the president has been tweeting about the trial supposedly rigged against bernie sanders, so it is -- we'll see what happens this week. we'll be watching, 1*u eastern n time on thursday many we'll have ful--on thursday. we'll have full coverage. arthel: it's a war of words between president trump and the supreme leader of iran. >> iran has been running an he's claanescalating policy for. they're not used to be told no. president trump is standing up to them in ways that have no historic precedent. arthel: so what happens next with relations between our

1:29 pm
this comes as iran's supreme leader exchanges jabs with president trump, that on twitter. greg palkot is following that story from jordan this afternoon. >> reporter: we are looking at a significant climb-down from iran, according to their state media sources, iranian officials saying the black box, flight and data recorders which were recovered following the shoot-down of the ukrainian passenger plane last week will now be sent to ukraine. 176 people were killed in the incident. the data from the devices according to these reports, eric, will be examined by experts from canada, france, and the united states. if they are unable to retrieve the information, the devices will be sent to france where technical expertise is best on these matters. iran initially said they would hold onto the boxes and would do their own investigation. then they admitted their military was responsible for the

downing of the plane and that they were open to an international probe. the question now is when the remains of the victims will be returned to their home countries, in addition to over 80 iranians on-board, there were 57 canadians, 11 from ukraine and others from the u.k., germany, sweden and afghanistan. for now, eric, it seems that with tensions so high on so many fronts in the region, iran at least wants to deal with this matter, which is, it admits, was a tragic error on their part. eric: not the least of many iranians on the streets. thank you. arthel: as greg is reporting, tensions still simmering between washington and tehran. the state department slapping new sanctions on the iranian general accused of ordering troops to open fire on protesters back in november, around 150 people were killed in that incident. we are also learning that 11 americans were hurt last week after iran fired missiles at two

iraqi bases housing u.s. troops. president trump now engaging in a war of words with iran's supreme leader saying on twitter, quote, instead of leading iran toward ruin, its leader should abandon terror and make iran great again. where does diplomacy go from here, let's bring in vinnie bowles, the army's former assistant deputy chief of staff. good to see you. >> good to see you, arthel. arthel: thank you. >> always a pleasure. arthel: is diplomacy dead, general bowles? >> no, it's not dead. a lot of people are focusing on the words. as always in that part of the world, behavior is believable. i would watch what iran does, not just what the ayatollah says, specifically will they take this as an opportunity to move forward and engage in some kind of a negotiation to get to lower the temperature or will
1:32 pm
they continue to exploit their terrorism as they do throughout the region. arthel: so that channel diplomacy is alive. meanwhile, more u.s. economic sanctions raining down on iranian leaders. and iran has internal problems with more locals protesting against those iranian leaders. so who or what country is providing iran with a lifeline at this time? >> three predominantly, north korea is providing them missile technology and has been for quite a few years and then on top of that also, as recently happened, russia and china were engaged in naval exerciseses with them in the persian gulf. that's some area they're getting stability and some support from i think as well as some nations in the region who have maybe not boldly but at least supported them. arthel: all that, as you laid out, what's the u.s.'s next
1:33 pm
move, diplomatically, militarily or otherwise? >> from a military perspective, it has to be security. i think the unknown in this equation is iraq. iraq, what we really have to watch is iraq does not want to be se perceived as the chew toy between an iran, u.s. fight and don't want to be perceived as our lackey and doing whatever we want them to do. iraq is the unknown. it's unfolding. so i think dealing with the iraqi administrations that are there now with the prime minister and the forces there and maintaining their strength and stability is key for us. arthel: we know president trump is saying that the u.s. is going to keep the troops in iraq, i believe we have some 5,000, 5,300, and if you have to your point, if you have iraq wanting to make sure they have a spine and they're not going to be ordered around by america, how does that work out? what's the negotiation there, to keep the american troops there, to keep stability over there,
1:34 pm
and to let iraq continue to be independent? >> well, candidly, we haven't handled it well, in my opinion. the prime minister had asked that the u.s. send a delegation over so they could discuss the status of forces and the u.s. troops in the region, you how that could be managed -- how that could be managed. the response from the secretary of state and others was to fuse their request and say we'll be happy to talk about cost sharing and burden sharing but there's no necessity for us to go over and talk about removal of u.s. forces ors troops. despite our best efforts, that can't help but come across to both the iraqi add a medicine strayings and the -- administration and iraqi people as arrogant. arthel: we'll see how that plays out and we'll have you back to analyze that for us. finally, we had greg palkot reporting that iran is going to send the black boxeses from the ukrainian flight they accidentally shot down.
1:35 pm
is that their way of saying we're trying to behave more like a nor normal state? >> i think it's their way to trying to show a other nations, ukraine, canada, europe, this is an effort to show those nations that iran is not without a heart, nor without a brain to actively open their -- open themselves so they can handle this issue. and it's their apology as well because they precipitated it. arthel: we have to leave it there. i look forward to speaking with you next time. >> always a pleasure. take care, arthel, thank you. eric: airports in new york city, los angeles and san francisco, they're screening passengers who arrived from a city in central china, there are concerns about a mysterious new virus there that caused two deaths had and infected dozens of others. christina coleman is reporting from this, live at los angeles international airport with more.
1:36 pm
hi, christina. >> reporter: hi, eric. well, china has reported 45 cases of this virus so far and there has been two deaths which is why u.s. officials have a major effort underway to stop this virus from spreading. now, the federal government has about 100cdc officials screening arriving passengers from direct and connecting flights from china at new york's john f. kennedy air fort, san francisco and loss angeles a airports. the screening are expected to impact 5,000 passengers over the next few weeks. the passengers will be checked for fever, coffee, difficulty breathing, signs of the corona virus. passengers who show symptoms will undergo further testing and could be taken to nearby hospitals. on december 30th china reported the outbreak of the disease in china. the viruses are a large family of viruses which include sars and mers, which infected thousands of people.
1:37 pm
the cdc says the risk of this virus to the general public is low, but they want to be proactive and prepared. many airline passengers say they're fine with the airport screening, since it is part of an effort to prevent a large international outbreak. >> i think if it's issues that affects others, it's good to be cautious about it and make sure if it's a real thing, don't spread it around. >> reporter: most of the patients in this outbreak reportedly had some link to a large seafood and live animal market in china. the market was closed earlier this month for disinfection and cleaning. china is reporting updates on this outbreak to the world health organization and nearly half a dozen countries in asia are screening airline passengers arriving from central china. just this week, three caseses of the virus were identified outside of china, two in thailand and one in japan. some of the people who got sick with this virus are still

states, we've seen rand paul and others on both sides, democrats and republicans in congress saying we cannot be the policemen of the world george mcgovern used to say in 1972. we can't fix every problem. we can't spend trillions of dollars sending our men and women around the world, getting l killed, for what. we can't force other nations to be like us. we can help them become like us and freer but we can't force ourselves upon them. that's one of the dangers in this country, the military overreach. eric: finally, page 151, you write about detroit being very symbolic. i mean, detroit is the beating heart of american industrial might. the b-24s that defeated the nazi menace were developed there and now we see as you see the shootings in chicago and -- it's coming back a bit but you use that as a symbol of what we were and what we could become. >> look at our inner city, look at san francisco, los angeles, look at the homeless population.

the media don't address this very much anymore. they used to. they don't address the real problems. the opioid epidemics, all of these things that are undermining the foundational principles and founding principles of our nation are challenged. the concept of right and wrong, if you say you believe certain things are right, you are immediately denounced by interest groups who call you a a big got, -- bigot and the rest. people used to accuse me of wanting to return to the era of ozy and hai harriet. i said i would defend them if you defend bevis ans s and butt. i hope you're wrong on an expiration date. bit it is vital, interesting reading and it is a warning for our times, america's exploration date by the legendary, yes, cal

arthel: prince harry and meghan markle stepping aside as senior royals, buckingham falls pal has say they will cease to be working members of the royal family in spring of 2020. let's bring in a royal expert and former british public affairs official. very good to have you here this afternoon. harry is no longer part of the royal family, but he is still very much a part of the loving family, per the queen's statement. harry also remains a prince and he is sixth in line to the british throne. what does all of this mean in the immediate future and in years to come? >> that's right. you have it exactly correct. prince harry is a prince by birth. he'll retain that. he'll retain his spot in the line of succession. none of that changes. the statement says they will no longer use their hrh stylings but they will retain them, actually. that's an important piece here. they very much are still members of the family, as a family, and
1:53 pm
sort of have given up the job of it. the immediate changes more have to do with their patronages. they will no longer represent the queen in some of their patronages. they can continue to do their private patronages which would include something like the invictus games and harry will lose his military titles. arthel: harry and meghan are stripped of the hrh but are giving up the royal highness titles, no longer taking military appointments, probably really big disappointment to harry, no longer represent the queen, and now they're off the taxpayer ledger which i wonder, i would imagine that the queen kind of had no choice, an outcry in london saying, listen, you can't have it both ways, you're in or you're out, you're royalty or you're not and if you're not
1:54 pm
we're not paying for your comings and goings and your salary. what about security for them? >> so that's the sort of big open question here. the statement makes it very clear that they are not going to address where the security costs come from but i think that this is why they weren't actually stripped of their his and her royal highness title because hrh is a styling that although they will not use it to be a working member of the royals, i think might cover some of their security costs. but again, i don't think any of this has been completely settled yet. arthel: i read that the prime minister, justin yo justin trudf canada, saying we would love to have them here in canada but we're not sure about the security payment thing either. i know they're going to be in canada now. i have a feeling they'll spend a lot of time in america. let's talk about the beginning of all this. what drove harry and meghan to this? they say they want to be financially independent. is it the negative press that meghan gets in london, is that a factor? >> i thin i think that the negae
1:55 pm
press is definitely a part of it. i think it's a much wider ranging issue here. harry has been sort of commenting little things here and there to reporters, off the record and to friends for a very long time about how unhappy he is with all the public pressure that is on him and i think we can't forget that meghan was a 36-year-old financially independent successful woman when she joined the family and walking into an institution that is based on rules and traditions and standing in line, you know, i think that was a very hard adjustment for her. so this makes sense for them. arthel: i've got really 20 seconds, shannon. what about does harry keep his british citizenship and does he keep his inheritance? >> oh, for sure, for sure. we'll be seeing more of them, not less. arthel: all right, shannon, thank you very much. >> thank you. arthel: we will be right back.

2:00 pm
3:00 p.m. and man was it a royal shakeup in london and it's a bombshell. prince harry and meghan markle will no longer be working members of the royal family. hello, i'm eric sean. this is a brand-new hour of america's news headquarters. arthel: i'm arthel neville. in an agreement with the queen, the couple will no longer use the titles of his and her royal highness. and they will also no longer receive public funds. kitty logan is following all the latest breaking developments from london. 10:00 p.m. local time. i know you've been stuck in the studio but i'm curious, what are some of your friends saying about this. just give me some color. >> reporter: well, i think for the british public this is pretty palletable. it doesn't place any burden on the taxpayer here. the royal as you say will be stripped of their official titles, they won't be using any public funds in future. this is effectively a clean break for them, in their role as royals.
2:01 pm
it will start from this spring. this of course was the official announcement made by buckingham palace. we have yet to hear from harry and meghan the themselves. there was two statements, one from the queen, one from buckingham palace. the statement from the queen is very warm in its tone, very amicable, she wishes the couple well in the future, emphasizes they remain part of the family. but not in their royal roles. they won't continue to carry out those royal duties on behalf of the queen they they have been doing until now. they won't have those titles, the duke and duchess of sussex, that's all gone and they won't receive any official funding for any of their own future activities. they've also agreed to repay millions of dollars which they spent renovating their windsor home that was very controversial. the issue, though, of their security costs, that's not been made public and we know that meghan has already left for
2:02 pm
canada. she's been there for a couple weeks. harry is now expected to join her. the question is, what will they do there, how much time will they really spend now in the u.k., it doesn't seem likely that meghan will be returning all that much. the queen has expressed a her disappointment about the decision as we know, that the couple want to lead much more private lives but she says she understands the difficulties they've been facing in the public eye in recent months and she h respects their decision. the couple have been unhappy for quite some time now. i think the hope all around from the queen, with harry and meg mn and with the british public, that this will be the solution but this is a very big change for harry. he's been a royal all his life. it's going of to be a very challenging time ahead. we'll have to see what the pair end up doing, arthel. arthel: i think they're going to end up in america and working in hollywood and they'll be
2:03 pm
well-received there. i want to make sure i understand because they are not stripped of their titles. they still have the title, his and her l royal highness but they're not going to use the title. >> that's right. harry remains prince harry. he was born into the royal family. he will remain a prince. however, these titles, the queen gave them after the wedding in windsor, the duke and duchess of sussex, those titles are gone. that means they can't really use that royal name to trade on in the future for any of their future activities but they do remain royals. prince harry is royal by blood and that does not change. but what will change is how they live their lives, what they do, the duties they carried out on behalf of the queen that will no longer be the case. harry, interestingly, he will lose his military associations, military engagements he used to carry out which were at one point very important to him. i think it's also worth remembering that prince harry is a very popular member of the
2:04 pm
british royal family. he certainly will be missed here in the u.k. although as you say, it is likely we'll be seeing a lot more of the couple in canada and in america in the future. arthel: i thought they are still the duke and duchess of sussex. >> those titles, the queen said she made it clear that those titles no longer apply to them but they're still royal highness, he is still definitely prince harry. that's the understanding we have at this point in time based on the statement we've seen. arthel: i understand. it's a lot -- it's exciting but it is a real family, a real family with lots of family drama. so we'll keep covering it as we are all intrigued. kitty logan, thank you very much. eric: back at home, a powerful winter storm is making its way to the northeast after impacting millions of folks in the midwest, lots of snow and ice. it is winter. adam klotz has more from the fox
2:05 pm
extreme weather center, aptly named for this evening. hi, adam. >> it is winter and we're really beginning to see it. now this leading edge of the storm that moved across the midwest, centering on new england, just into the southern edge of where the snow is, that's new york city, everything to the north, eventually rain will sweep in through new york, becoming a slushy mess. the backside of the system where the snow was 12 hours ago, it's pulling in a lot of very cold canadian air, so you're beginning to see the wind chills already in the northern plains negative 24 degrees, all of that cold air will be chasing this system and we're going to see temperatures drop in a big way here on the eastern half of the country, here for the next couple of days. here's the future radar. you'll see the system slowly moving off. by the time we get to tomorrow morning, 9:00, 10:00 a.m., almost all of the snow is completely out of here. we only have tonight to pay attention to this as a snow
2:06 pm
maker. the backside of this system, the temperatures start to fall, even the warmer spots in the teens, you run back farther to the west and suddenly you're down to single digits or in some cases down in negative temperatures there. fairly consistently, day or night. so really cold air will be on the backside of this system. the last thing i'll leave you with is the snowfall totals, new york, maybe an inch or two inches, really you need to be farther upstate, a little elevation, those are the spots we'll see 6 inches of snow or more. not a huge snow-maker, but we're seeing snow and colder temperatures. eric: good thing it's hitting on the weekend. thank you. arthel: well, meanwhile, house managers are facing a deadline this hour to present evidence in the impeachment trial as we wait to hear whether witnesses will be allowed and if new evidence will be intros duesed. democrats are hoping newly released documents from a former associate of rudy giuliani will
2:07 pm
dial up the pressure on republicans. we have live fox team coverage on this. mark meredith is in palm beach, florida with white house reaction. we begin with lucas tomlinson live on capitol hill. lucas, what's the latest? >> reporter: arthel, we've now gone past the deadline for house democrats to put forth their formal case against the president. the white house will have an hour to respond. this afternoon, bernie sanders said he's heading back here to capitol hill very soon. >> we'll see how dangerous this person is in the trial that's coming up this week. by the way, i wish i could be back new hampshire and iowa but i will be in washington, doing my constitutional duty. >> reporter: last night, house democrats released new documents showing what they claim is more evidence the trump administration wanted to pressure top ukrainein officials to investigate joe biden. the documents show text mess a ans between lev parnas and derek
2:08 pm
harvey, an aide to devin nunes. the messages show harvey and parnas working to you a range interviews with ukrainian officials who claim they had dirt on the bidens. earlier today, march sha blackburn said in addition to rooting for the titans, she's also rooting for an impartial senate. >> it's not the way those running for president or even this weekend, out campaigning, even in an iowa snowstorm, that is not going to to be the way they approach it. >> reporter: it's unclear if the democrats will call forward any witnesses. if they do, democratic senators like bernie sanders will be in washington longer than he wants to. arthel: thank you very much. eric: arthel, we're getting in the first filing from the president's legal team, drafting a response to the articles of impeachment. that accuses the democrats of a brazen attempt it says to
2:09 pm
overturn the 2016 election. the president's defense team will be led by pa pat sipilone d jay sekul of o. >>o.>> we're ready for an actul due process to present and we've been ready for this the whole time. we shouldn't be there. we shouldn't have to be there. the president should never have been impeached but we're ready to go and we have been ready to go. eric: that is jordan sekulo who will help his father, jay, as part of the team. we have coverage that continues, mark meredith is in west palm beach, florida. hi, mark. >> reporter: sources close to the president's legal team say they plan to file the response to the senate summons on impeachment sometime within the next 55 minutes or so. they expect to take this on in several different chapters, basically explaining they belief this has been an unfair proceeding by the house so far and they believe of course that
2:10 pm
this impeachment is not something that would hold up legally. we have not seen the actual response to the senate yet. but sources close to the president's legal team briefed reporters and said the articles of impeachment submitted by house democrats are a dangerous attack on the rights of the american people to freely choose their president. we expect a lot more to come out in the next few you minutes or . so far, eight lawyers have signed on to the job, including pat sipiloni. ken starr, tied to the clinton years, he'll be on the team. so is alan dershowitz. >> we are prepared for whatever happens in the senate. if this turns out to be a long, drawn-out process with witnesses, we're ready. if it's a version in between, where it's shorter and a couple witnesses, we're ready. if it's dismissed, which it should be, we're ready for that as well. >> reporter: now, we're waiting to see if impeachment is going
2:11 pm
to impact the president's schedule over the next several weeks. he's supposed to leave for switzerland on monday for an economic summit. he's got campaign rallies scheduled for the end of the month. the state of the union in early february, we're also going to be looking to see exactly what the response is going to be from folks back in washington as that impeachment response paperwork is filed with the senate at some point between now and 6:00 p.m. we expect to learn a lot more over the next 48 hours or so, a lot more documents expected to be filed between now and when lawmakers get back to work on tuesday. eric: just looking at a snowy capitol. can you imagine the trial bumping into the state of the union, what that would be like in that room, see how it plays out. thank. >> reporter: people have been ask whether or not that would impact the president's plan to deliver the state of the union and right now there is so much up in the air, it's unclear what will happen next. eric: mark, thank you. arthel: a new virus emerging out of china reportedly at at least two people have died from
2:12 pm
exposure in a central chinese city and now authorities at three major u.s. airports are screening passengers flying in from the area. christina coleman is outside of lax, one of the airports with the enhanced screening. christina. >> reporter: arthel, china reported 45 cases of the virus so far and there have been two deaths which is why government officials are working around the clock right now to stop this deadly virus from spreading. about 100 cdc officials are screening arriving passengers from direct and connecting flights at new york's john f. kennedy airport, los angeles and san francisco airports. the passengers are checked for fever, coughing, difficulty he breathing, signs of the corona virus. passengers will undergo further testing and could be taken to nearby hospitals. on december 308th china report -- 30th, china reported the outbreak of the respiratory disease in a major transportation hub, 700 miles
2:13 pm
south of beijing with a population of more than 11 million people. the cdc says the risk of this corona virus to the general public is low, but they wanted to take caution and be prepared especially since travel is heavy to and from china right now as people take trips to celebrate the lunar new year. >> we're screening passengers returning into the united states because we want to detect the virus early, the earlier we detect the virus, the better we'll understand it and the better we'll be able to protect people. >> reporter: most of the patients in this outbreak reportedly had some link to a large seafood and a live animal market. that market was closed earlier this month for disinfection and cleaning while the cdc monitors the developing international situation and just this week three cases of the virus were identified outside of china, two in thailand and one in japan. some of the people who got sick with the virus are seriously ill right now and others were able to recover and right now the cdc is working on coming up with a
2:14 pm
specific diagnostic test to detect the virus and they plan to send that to state health departments. arthel: christina coleman, thank you. eric: the impeachment trial of president trump putting the four democratic senators who are running for president and going to have to be jurors in the trial, putting them in a tough spot. as we enter the final stretch before the iowa caucus. what impact that could have on their campaigns. plus, prince harry and meghan kell no longer -- markle mo longenolonger employed with thel family. what that means and what's next for the couple and if they go to canada or hollywood.
2:18 pm
eric: some of the 20102010 democratic presidential candidates out trying to rally support in iowa this weekend. the caucus is just over two weeks away. some of the senators won't be on the campaign trail as much as they would like to be, they instead will be sitting in their t senate seats serving as jurors in the impeachment trial of president trump. allison barber is live in des moines, iowa with the latest on their comings and goings. hi,al son. >> reporter: a number of 2020 hopefuls are braving the cold, making their way to community
2:19 pm
events, town halls across iowa. andrew yang kicked off his 17 day bus tour this morning. he's had two town halls today, one in iowa city, one in marion. he has another one this evening in independence, iowa. he's going to be on the bus tour, making stops every day until the caucuses on february 3rd. it would be impossible for the 2020 hopefuls serving in the u.s. senate, four senators are in the democratic presidential race, warren and klobuchar, they were in iowa today. sanders and bennett, they're in new hampshire. all four are hoping they can find a balance and banking on voters understanding they aren't going to be on the trail in the coming days and the coming weeks because they took an a oath and they have to stay in dc for the impeachment trial. >> i swore a constitutional oath as a united states senator to do my job. >> we have a constitutional duty to fulfill. i'm not worried about getting taken off the campaign trail. >> i'm not cancelling events.
2:20 pm
>> i would rather be in iowa today, there's a caucus there in two and-a-half weeks. >> i'm going to run this campaign to the very end. we're just going to have to double down and work even hard harder. >> reporter: there are other ways that candidates can campaign in iowa, even if they aren't physical present in the state. iowa takes voting very seriously. you'll meet a lot of people at town halls who will tell you it was their second or third event. there are some 50% of likely caucus-goers who say they're open to potentially changing their candidate before caucus day. retail politicking, it matters a lot here, door knocks, selfie lines, face-to-face meetings and those senators will be limited on that. time will tell how much it affects them but it's a situation that is less than ideal for all of them. eric: that want to meet the candidates one on one, in the living rooms and town halls.
2:21 pm
thank you. arthel: senator amy klobuchar speaking in iowa today, earlier, she was trying to stay in the mix as the others are as the impeachment trial of president trump kicks into high gear next creek. the historic event will likely pull klobuchar and three other 2020 candidates off the campaign trail, with the first in the nation caucuses right around the corner, as we just heard from allison barber. right now, we bring in jeff mason, a white house reporter for reuters. so jeff, senator klobuchar, she says, look, i'll send surrogates, i've got good ones, maybe her husband or her daughter, she might skype into voters. senator san sayin sanders sayind like to continue to campaign in new hampshire and iowa but he's happy to fulfill his constitutional due you at this. how will this -- duty. how will this break from the trail impact their campaign? >> it will certainly give an advantage to the joe bidens and the pete buttigiegs of the world who don't have to come back to washington for the trial and
2:22 pm
andrew yang, as was just shown, they have the advantage now because they'll have full-time, they'll be able to be full-time themselves on the ground, meeting with voters as this cause yo cuss date a-- caucus de approaches. i think voters understand the sense stores have to be in washington. it's possible some of the senators may have moments in the senate trial that may give them some attention back in iowa and new hampshire and elsewhere in the country. it's not necessarily all bad. but it's not ideal in terms of timing. arthel: of course, they are sworn to conduct themselves in the impeachment trial as guided by the constitution. do you expect politics to get the best of the democratic senators who want president trump's job or will they in fact remain patriotic and professional? >> well, you know, it's hard for me of to answer that. i think that they will all the take their oath very seriously. they've all said that, both republicans and democrats have said that.
2:23 pm
i don't think that the four presidential candidates who are senators are any different. clearly, there is politics in this process and that will be making itself known, i think throughout the trial, but as far as these four sense senators goo doubt they'll focus on the trial and, look, i mean, there are some similar argument that's would be made at the trial compared to what they're probably making on the trail, that these democrats don't president trump should be in office and that's why they're campaigning to be the democratic nominee. arthel: some of they -- i'm sure -- i can't say i'm sure but perhaps some of the president's defense team might point to these senators having personal reasons to go against the president. but how much will voters, jeff, especially undecided voters, being paying attention to how the candidates, senators, conduct themselves throughout the impeachment trial.
2:24 pm
>> i think it's a good question. i mean, i suspect that some of these senators who are candidates will highlight any role that they play in the impeachment trial to the extent that they have a moment or ask a question or do a vote that they are proud of and that they want highlighted back in iowa and new hampshire and the other early voting states. they'll have to find some way to stay engaged with voters even though they are in washington and not out there shaking hands and knocking on doors. so we'll have to see how the trial progresses. there's lots of questions obviously about how the trial is going to progress. but they have to be there. they made clear that they need to be there and they want to fulfill their constitutional duties even though it's a little inconvenient. arthel: i have another thought but i'm going to go here. we know the four democratic senators don't think they should recuse themselves from the president's impeachment trial. and they will be there. but what about president trump, will he appear at his impeachment trial to address the charges? >> well, that's a good question. and i don't know the answer to
2:25 pm
that yet. i'm not sure anybody knows the answer to the that yet. that's one of the open questions along with will there be witnesseses. at this point, we'll find out more in the coming days, the trial really gets started on monday and -- excuse me, on tuesday is what i meant to say and after each sides makes their arguments they'll have a vote on witnesses. whether or not president trump decides to attend, i haven't heard anything about that. there are some question marks about what he'll be doing in the next couple weeks. he is somebody who obviously likes to follow these proceedings very closely, a trial that's affecting him obviously very, very directly is not one that he won't be watching. but he does have plans to go to switzerland for davos, the world economic forum and one piece of his strategy and the white house's strategy has been to say, look, while democrats impeach the president, the president over here is doing his job for the country. so i suspect we'll see a little bit of both of that, in terms of
2:26 pm
his actions going forward over the next couple weeks. arthel: the trick is, the president, will he or won't he live tweet it. if he's live tweeting, he's paying attention, he's distracted from the job at hand, perhaps. i don't know. it's all intriguing. >> spot on there, arthel, spot-on. arthel: thank you, jeff, mason. thank you. talk to you soon. listen, back to being professional. we're going to have bipartisan -- new bipartisan reaction tomorrow on fox news sunday, chris wallace will have an exclusive interview with senate judiciary chairman, lindsey graham and chris will also sit down with one of the democratic impeachment managers, congressman joaquin jeffries, that airs at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m. eastern on the fox news channel and of course make sure you check local listing to see when it airs, fox news sunday airs on your fox affiliate and we will be right back. humira patients...
