>> look what joe montana did! >> see you back here tomorrow! >> sandra: all right, fox news alert on the super weekend! three huge events. the super bowl, the iowa caucuses, and on tuesday, the state of the union. before all that, the senate possibly moving toward an acquittal in president trump's impeachment trial after a key republican says no to witnesses. good morning, everybody! i'm sandra smith live from miami this morning, and i'm proud to say it's sunny here and we are enjoying it. super bowl liv, the big game between the 49ers and the chiefs is now just two days away. hey, ed! >> ed: how are you, sandra? i'm ed henry and i'm sad to say it's pretty chilly here. live in des moines, iowa, the side of the first president to contest or 2020. just three days ago.
6:01 am
we are seeing big movement in the polls. >> sandra: before all that we want to show off the scene here in south beach for all the fox team is gearing up for the big super bowl. it is a beautiful day. rain was in the forecast, but things change. it's about 70 degrees now and the excitement is building for an awesome matchup between the chiefs and the 49ers, which you can watch live on fox. it is a party scene here, ed, let me tell you. >> ed: i can tell, a little bit of a different kind of excitement building here at the river center in downtown des moines. you can see what a wonderful set up, we've got barn doors behind me. what says i will more than that? as i landed i could see air force one parked because president trump is here to remind democrats he is still popular here. as the democrats who want the job gear up for a weekend of round the round-the-clock campaigning, making their closing arguments. >> sandra: let's get straight to our top stories this morning. republican senator lamar alexander seen as one of a handful of swing votes, coming out against calling
6:02 am
witnesses, additional witnesses, in this trial. the decision effectively dashing democrat hopes of hearing testimony from john bolton. alexander explaining his decision in a statement, reading, "there is no need for more evidence to prove something that has already been proven, and that does not meet the united states constitution's high bar for an impeachable offense," he says. "if this shelley, hurried , and only partisan impeachment were to succeed, it would rip the country apart, pouring gasoline on the cultural divisions that already exist." that announcement sparking some swifter action. >> i think with this announcement, the chance of witnesses now has plummeted. we are likely to move on saturday to final judgment at the end of which the president would be acquitted. >> i think there will be opportunities for my colleagues to go on the record. i think they should be on the record. they are to be a record of
6:03 am
decisions. my colleagues ought to be held accountable rather than have it simply swept behind a rushed proceeding without evidence. >> sandra: joining us now, republican senator john barrasso of wyoming. he's the chairman of the senate republican conference and joins us now. good morning, and thank you for your time. >> thanks for having me, sandra. >> sandra: great to have you here this morning. what do you ultimately believe will happen with his vote on witnesses? >> we are coming to a conclusion of this, and i believe the president will be acquitted and that we will not be having witnesses. that vote will be held later today. people realize, and senator alexander is absolutely right, impeachment should never be partisan. what we have here was a very partisan, political process, rushed through the house. political stunts being played by the house. if there was any abuse of power, it was by the house with these impeachment articles. >> sandra: by the way, that
6:04 am
was not the take of senator alexander, who did say that democrats clearly made the case that the president acted inappropriately and did abuse powered. but still, he is not willing to vote yes and call additional witnesses in this trial. this could go to a tie, senator. in that case, we have to prepare fruit for what may be next. do you believe the chief justice would say bend and break that tie? >> i believe he will not. if it feels an issue of witnesses, the chief justice has followed the lines of rehnquist and the clinton impeachment trial. i would expect he would not put his hand on the scale at all in this. this has been a completely partisan effort are the democrats. this has been a political effort against the president of the united states, because the country is doing so well. the economy is doing so well. they themselves have said it may be the only way they can beat him. >> sandra: how do you think this ends, when do you think this ends, senator?
6:05 am
>> you are there for the super bowl, and i think the democrats might try to throw a couple of hail mary passes. i can't tell you on the timing, but the way it's going to end is the president will be acquitted, found not guilty by the senate. >> sandra: what do you think those hail maries may be? >> they will try to delay things, possibly. maybe try to involve and invoke the involvement of the chief justice. i think he will not take the bait on that. we have spent a lot of time on this, sandra. this is time that could have much better been spent working on behalf of the american people to lower drug costs, to help fix our aging bridges and roads, to do things to help our veterans. we spent a lot of time on this that we need to get back to the work of the american people. i want to get back to that work starting next week. >> sandra: still waiting to see where lisa murkowski falls on this witness vote. what are you hearing? >> well, she will make her own decision. i think she will make her own
6:06 am
announcement today and it certainly will when she cast her vote. but with senator alexander's decision, it seems to me to put it at the 50/50 that ted cruz just talked about. lisa murkowski would be 51-49 if he chooses to vote in that position, of not taking witnesses. the american people know we have heard enough. we have had nine days of trial and the senate, 17 witnesses from the house, thousands and thousands of pages of documents. a process that has gone on now for a long period of time. remember, the house managers have continued to talk about overwhelming evidence. they say they have made their case. this is not a case that should rise to the level of impeachment. it's not how the constitution describes impeachment in terms of high crimes and misdemeanors, with bribery, treason. it is not there. i am ready to vote to acquit the president of these charges. >> sandra: senator, we will see if that happens. there could be a quick up or
6:07 am
down vote on those articles of impeachment as soon as tonight. lamar alexander, when making his announcement that he would not be a "yes" vote on calling additional witnesses, talked about the precedent that this sentence. how do you see that? >> the concern i have is that the house has done a pretty shoddy job. flimsy evidence, rushed this. then they put in the lap of the senate and said, "you complete our homework projects, you complete the issue of bringing in new witnesses, new evidence." that's not what the constitution says. the constitution says it's up to the house to make the case at its up to the senate to vote yes or no. i think if the house can do such a poor job and then force the senate to do additional research, this is the kind of thing that could just lead to ongoing -- the weaponization of the impeachment process in the future. impeachment should be used so very rarely, but it's been three times in just the last 50 years. we do not want this to become
6:08 am
the routine in america, and the way the house -- i started by saying they abuse their power by doing a poor job, a rushed job, putting together flimsy case, and expecting the senate to do their work for them when that is not the way the founding fathers had envisioned. it's for us to make the decision on the case that they bring, and i am ready to vote and ready to vote to acquit the president. >> sandra: all right, senator, we really appreciate your time this morning. thank you. >> thanks, sandra. >> ed: out at this fox news alert. the trump administration taking the extraordinary step of warning americans not to travel to china, as the coronavirus is rapidly spreading. nearly 10,00 10,000 people now affected around the world. six cases in america. more than 200 people have died in china. while u.s. officials confirm the first person to person transmission here at home, an illinois woman with the virus infects her husband.
6:09 am
our correspondent jonathan serrie has been on the story all week. he's live in atlanta with an update. good morning, jonathan. >> good morning to you, ed. public health officials are describing this new patient's condition as stable. he is a chicago man in his 60s, the husband of this traveling. he himself had not visited china. however, his wife became ill shortly after returning from a trip to wuhan, the chinese city at the epicenter of the outbreak. state health officials in illinois say the woman is doing well but remains hospitalized for infection control. >> this person-to-person spread was between two very close contacts, a husband and wife. the virus is not spreading widely across the community at this time. >> the world health organization has praised china's efforts to control the spread of the virus. however, the w.h.o. has declared a global health emergency because of the potential for this virus to spread to countries with weak health systems and poor infection control. the u.s. state department has
6:10 am
issued a level 4 travel advisory. that's the highest level the issue. directing americans not to travel to china due to the coronavirus outbreak. the centers for disease control and prevention continues to monitor 195 u.s. diplomats. other government employees and their family members who were flown from wuhan to march air r. so far no one is showing symptoms, but local health officials there confirm that they have filed a quarantine order for one passenger who attempted to leave the base before being given the all clear by health screeners. ed? >> ed: we will stay on it. thank you, jonathan serrie. >> sandra: president trump touting promises kept in iowa last night, doing a victory left after signing the u.s.-mexico candidate trade deal. what is next with his agenda? rhea bartiromo is here in miami with us. she will join us live on set as we talk about this super bowl
6:11 am
scene and those palm trees. it's beautiful day here in miami. >> countries are coming in from all over the world. they are coming in like never before. they are all coming back. i ran on the issue of trade, a lot of different issues. but trade was one that was so big. to me, it was so big.
6:12 am
6:13 am
6:14 am
>> sandra: it's brexit, it's finally arrived for the u.k. after 3.5 years of failed negotiations and delays. britain will officially leave
6:15 am
the european union at 11:00 p.m. local time. prime minister boris johnson, a staunch advocate of brexit, calling the departure "not an end, but a beginning." but britain will notice very little change coming saturday. the u.k. will continue to follow all e.u. laws and regulations during an 11-month transition period. as leaders negotiate new agreements on issues like trade and security. >> we are winning by a lot. everyone, we are beating them all. [cheers and applause] we are beating them like they haven't been beaten before. they don't care about the farmers. we are going to win back the great state of iowa. [cheers and applause] and it's going to be a historic landslide. if we don't win, your forms are going to hell. >> ed: [laughs] welcome a blunt edge of the point. railing supporters here in iowa is 2020 democrats make their will push out of the nation's caucuses. the fuel is more by one.
6:16 am
just this morning, john deleting, democrats, withdrawing from the race. katie brockovich, john mccormick good morning to both of you. first to you, kathy, the president of course when mike iowa by 150,000 votes over hillary clinton back in 2016. you have six electoral votes. he still wants to make sure he is solid for the general election. >> yeah, at this stage he is pretty solid. that crowd last night, he definitely gave them what they wanted to hear. i talked to some women who had driven over a couple of hours from iowa falls to see him last night. that's exactly what they were looking for from the president. but he tells it like it is, that he's been good for the economy, good for iowa, and those ladies wear, i'm sure, among that huge crowd that was cheering. >> ed: 30 hours before the rally there were people lined up in this cold, 20 or 25 degrees.
6:17 am
before we get the general election, we get through democratic primary cop on my process. it all starts here monday night. your newspaper, our sister publication, a big new poll today showing bernie sanders has some movement at all of the sudden is basically in a national tie with joe biden. >> that was the first time our polls show that. having that parity with biden. you feel it on the ground here in iowa. he does seem to be having some late energy, which is of course when you want to peak. organize, organize, organize, get hot at the end. that seems to be what he's doing. >> ed: this poll from "the wall street journal" suggests elizabeth warren is slipping to a distant third place. pete buttigieg, as you can see, is still in the mix. talking to his people, they insist that sometimes buttigieg's crowds here on the ground are bigger than bernie's. >> it'll be interesting to see with "the des moines register" poll taxes on saturday night. our former employer, we were
6:18 am
both former "des moines register" employees. it'll be interesting to see. you can usually see who is surging. if somebody's on their way down here in the last days. pete buttigieg interestingly has kind of gone after joe biden, and bernie sanders. hitting them on various issues, including medicare for all, et cetera. that suggests that he thinks he's got some ground to make up. it's a risky move, though. being negative before the caucuses. >> ed: in the natural poll, 7% nationally. 9% for bloomberg. he's not playing here, as you know, in iowa. john, what does it mean when we were showing a moment ago, as well, a monolith poll that showed biden at the top but tied with sanders? let's not forget amy klobuchar, who shared that "new york times" endorsement of elizabeth warren. she thinks she's got these midwestern roots. she has been stuck in the senate trial for days now. what's going on with klobuchar
6:19 am
and others? >> she is in this awkward position where she really needed to be on the ground here these final days and she hasn't been able to do so. she's going to have a marathon sprint across the state on saturday and sunday, and we will get a lot of coverage for that. but she's in this place where iowa has these quirky rules where you have to be at least 15% to be viable in each precinct. that is a big bar to get to. she may not get there and a lot of precincts, in which case her supporters are going to have to make a second choice. will they go to biden? will they go to war in? where will they go? that'll be a big unknown. >> ed: what is your sense being here so long on the ground about that second choice for these orders? bernie sanders has been surging recently. if there's a klobuchar voter, somebody was going to caucus with delaney and i was out of the race, who is the second choice? is biden the solid front runner all along? >> i think a lot of the bring center supporters would go to elizabeth warren. buttigieg supporters would go to
6:20 am
biden. for the most part, all the voters i've talked to have mixed their deck a little bit and said, "well, i am for elizabeth warren, but i could go for buttigieg." they're not separating themselves into ideological lanes or democratic purity lanes. in a lot of cases, they take the temperature of the caucus when they are there and say, "okay, here is where people are." >> ed: usually there are three tickets out of here, john. if bernie sanders can win here, he has in some polls in new hampshire. the neighboring state of vermont that he represents. he beat hillary clinton by double digit in the 2016. what kind of momentum would bernie sanders had if all this and he wins iowa and new hampshire and biden is trying to hold the line in south carolina? >> sanders would have huge momentum if he got a first place here followed by a first place in new hampshire. he'd be the party -- the hierarchy would probably start
6:21 am
to panic a little bit. i think there's a lot of debate whether he would be a strong general election candidate. some people do think he would become others don't don't. there's a lot of obama and trump voters in this state. >> ed: what does that mean? >> they voted for obama in 2012 and then back to trump in 2016. i interviewed a bunch of them up in northeast iowa recently. >> ed: real quick, where they headed in 2020? >> so far they seem to be sticking with the president. they are curious who the nominees going to be. but a lot of folks told me that if the nominee is too liberal they will stick with trump. >> ed: very interesting. we will be watching with both of you. sandra? >> sandra: thank you, ed. an attorney for fotis dulos and from his death two days after he attempted suicide. what this means for the murder case against him, and will her family ever learn what happened to mother of five jennifer dulos? >> to those who contend that mr. dulos' death reflects a
6:22 am
consciousness of guilt, we say no. we say it was more a conscience over born with the weight of a world that was too busy to listen.

>> usmca all done, china all done. for the farmers, it's done. that, i can tell you. you're going to have to get bigger tractors and a hell of a lot more land. it's a massive win. for iowa farmers and workers, europe is next. i wanted to finish china before he started on europe. >> sandra: president trump touting his trade victories at a campaign rally in iowa, saying do you deal with europe will now follow. the president looking to steal some of the democrats 'center with iowa caucuses set for monday. maria bartiromo is that most of sunday morning futures and "mornings with maria." she joined us live from the nfl experience here in miami. not onset with me but in a different part of town. >> yes, exactly. >> sandra: absolutely, people everywhere. so the president took an opportunity to take a victory lap, touting his success on
6:27 am
these trade deals. he says europe is next. >> yeah, that's right. he told me the same thing when i was in davos. he's been negotiating already. remember, he had that meeting on the sidelines with the head of the european commission. when he told them, he told her, that we need europe to buy more agricultural products. we've been treated unfairly, we have a trade deficit with europe, and we want to make sure you step up your purchases. he told me they have to do it, there's no way they won't do it. because if they don't, i am going to be putting tariffs and placed on products coming from europe. we've already seen as a result of the subsidy situation with airbus, that was a while ago. if the president starts putting tariffs on products coming from europe, it does jeopardize this incredibly comity that he has been able to lead with 50-your own employment. we'll see. i don't think he will do that easily but he certainly wants to do a deal. i would make a bet that there will be a trade deal with europe
6:28 am
this year. that is certainly with the president and wilbur ross told me recently, last couple of weeks. >> sandra: obviously the timing of it being the election year, that could put a huge part in what happens next in politi politics. >> oh, yeah. sandra, you know, this is a business guide. this is a real estate developer, a business person who is now our president. he is focused on business. he's focused on the economy and on jobs and on the stock market. you have to believe he's not going to do anything to mess up what has been a record stock market performance and a very strong backdrop for the economy. i suspect he's going to do more and more of that going into the election, which is where he also told me in the interview i did with him in davos that he's working on a tax cut plan. he wants to lower taxes for individuals and make those cuts permanent. all of these things are among his tools in his toolbox to make a splash going into the election. i would bet that's what he's going to do as we continue to see what's going on in washington with the impeachment. >> sandra: let's talk about what's happening in miami.
6:29 am
the big game, super bowl liv, coming on sunday. and the ads for the super bowl, which fox is hosting, obviously, the ads sold out in november, maria. after a couple of flat years, this was the earliest sellout in nearly a decade. a 30-second spot commending as much is $5.6 million. a sign of the economy. a sign of football, too. >> it's a lot of things. all of the above, i would say. there were so much money around this again. i have an exclusive interview with roger gooddell, the commissioner of the nfl. that will air on sunday, on "sunday morning futures." in the interview he tells me there is so much morning around this game. i said to him, "is this $1 billion on revenue on sunday alone?" he said it's an easy billion. so not just an ad from president trump, an ad for michael bloomberg people out of silicon valley money in here. we know that stubhub is talking about the tickets being $7,000
6:30 am
to $9,000 a ticket to go to the game. it's also the 100 year anniversary for the nfl and here we are in miami. international city, a lot of celebrities, musicians. all that adds to the excitement. this is going to be one watched big game, for sure, sandra. >> sandra: absolutely. i spoke to some of the restaurants on ocean avenue before the show and they said that they are staffing up, filling up their refrigerators. they are going to stay open until 3:00, 4:00 in the morning, because they are expecting a party. maria, thank you, nice to see you. >> thank you. you, too, sandra. >> ed: meanwhile, joe biden slimming president trump. accusing him of fostering a "culture of cruelty." that's not all. he was on the attack. we'll get a reaction from the biden campaign on this very special edition of "america's newsroom," live from des moines and the final countdown to the caucuses. >> i can hardly wait to debate this man. he has no plan. he has no better idea.
6:31 am
he just can't stand a single achievement from our administration. and he's already lying about it. i'm your mother in law. and i like to question your every move. like this left turn. it's the next one. you always drive this slow? how did you make someone i love? that must be why you're always so late. i do not speed. and that's saving me cash with drivewise. my son, he did say that you were the safe option. and that's the nicest thing you ever said to me. so get allstate. stop bossing. where good drivers save 40% for avoiding mayhem, like me. this is my son's favorite color, you should try it. [mayhem] you always drive like an old lady? [tina] you're an old lady.

6:35 am
morning shows bernie sanders holding a very slim lead over joe biden nationally. let's bring in kate bedingfield, joe biden's deputy campaign manager and communications director. good morning. >> good morning, thanks for having me. >> ed: please react to this new poll, it's obviously within the margin of error. but for the first time, bernie sanders is basically on top. can you stop this momentum? >> well, we always knew this would be a close race. he said from the outset it would be a dogfight. i think the reason for that is the stakes are so high. i think what democratic voters are looking for right now is the person who can unite our party, who can unite the country, and can beat donald trump. i think joe biden is that candidate. is out talking to voters. here in iowa, crisscrossing the state, making the case that he is the person who can restore the soul of this nation, bring a sense of empathy and integrity back to the white house. so you are really hearing and make a case that i think is a
6:36 am
fundamental question that democratic voters are asking themselves when they go to the polls starting on monday. which is, who can beat donald trump and restore a sense of integrity to the office? >> ed: he mentioned the president, he was in this very state last night as joe biden was making his case at an event in iowa. here is the president. i will give you a fair chance to react. >> let's vote for sleepy joe. how many times has he missed it? it's great to be in the great state of ohio. they say, "joe, you are in iowa eczema" he had a crowd that was so small the every day, they set up a round table >> ed: vice president mentioned he might need a young vice president because he admitted, "i'm kind of an old guy." as that printed the president's hands?" >> we love to see donald trump at iowa attacking joe biden because it reminds of her buddy how badly he doesn't want to face him. here in iowa you have
6:37 am
senator ernst, who this week basically give up the game and 'fessed up to what impeachment is all about. the fact that donald trump is afraid to face joe biden at the polls. we are seeing here at these events in iowa is the vice president is getting cheers from the crowd who understand what's going on here. you've got trump, you've got vice president pence, they are sending 80 surrogates to attack joe biden. there's a reason for that. the reason is they don't want him to be the nominee. as democratic voters are thinking about who they can put up against donald trump, joe biden does the candidate who has withstood every single thing trump is thrown at them. every snare, every attempt to attack his family and has continued to emerge stronger. >> ed: we will talk about that. pardon me, the vice president last night said that his event, "character is on the ballot." what kind of character did the vice president show when barack obama had him overseeing ukrainian policy and yet one of
6:38 am
the vice president's sons was making over $83,000 a month from ukrainian gas company? what kind of character was that? >> it was absolutely unassailable character, because he was pushing the foreign policy interest of the united states of america. you had republican senators at the time, like ron johnson, who had signed on to a letter supporting the removal of viktor shokin because vice president biden was actively pushing to root out corruption in ukraine. it was a stated interest. let me finish, if you're going to make an allegation like that. i want the time to answer. >> ed: i am, but i want to follow up. >> he was pushing the interest of the foreign policy of the united states of america. not a single person, including republican-called witnesses in this impeachment proceeding, have suggested that he did anything other than carry out -- >> ed: hang on a second -- >> let's just be clear what this is about -- >> ed: that's not true. george kent, who, as you know, was called by the democrats, he's a career diplomat.
6:39 am
november 13th at the impeachment hearing, he said, "i raise my concern that hunter biden status as a board member could create a perception of a conflict of interest." he also testified that the vice president's office "blew it off. they didn't respond, they didn't care about the conflict." >> and they testified that he is a man of integrity and did nothing but his job. this is an attempt, pure and simple, by donald trump to smear joe biden, suggest there is some sort of ethical issue here when there isn't, to do everything in his power to try and prevent joe biden from being the nominee. because he knows if joe biden is the nominee he's going to be it. he's looking at the same polls everybody else's. he sees him beating in the battleground's outcome places that that's that's what he's lying about them. it's plain and simple. >> ed: such as the president. "the washington post" had an editorial, "viewpoint of the vice president's son to ukrainian oil board looks like nepotism at best," and they
6:40 am
said, "nefarious at worst." last point? >> this is exactly what i'm talking about. this is the equation of donald trump's significant impeachable wrongdoing. not a single person has suggested joe biden use to his advantage or to his son's advantage pray these are not equivalent arguments. he wants them to carry this forward and suggest that somehow vice president biden did something wrong. but nothing could be further from the truth. >> ed: well, that was "washington post," not fox where the president. may 14th, 2014. we appreciate you coming in. >> thanks for having me. >> sandra: all right, well, it's almost game day, folks. super bowl liv already setting up to be a record day for both quarterbacks. former nfl star, lavar arrington, will be our guest. he joins us live coming up. ♪
