♪ ♪ steve: well, on this sunday morning we're just one day away from the iowa caucuses tomorrow night, and it's certainly not lacking drama. the highly anticipated des moines register poll of likely caucus-goers that everybody was looking forward to reading this morning has been scrapped after complaints from the buttigieg campaign about how it was conducted. apparently, his name was left off of some of the polls. ainsley: this as democratic insiders reportedly fear lots of their voters could stay home or even defect to president trump if bernie sanders snags the nomination. steve: howie carr joins us right now to weigh in. howie, good morning to you. >> good morning. steve: what do you make of what is going on in iowa? for a while elizabeth warren was ahead, pete buttigieg was ahead, and right now -- >> bernie. steve: -- bernie is, the socialist. >> i think's why buttigieg was so concerned. we've all been in local tv

looking it up driving down here, there's over a million people employed in frack. if that gets out, and i'm sure that trump will get it out, you know, that could turn ohio, michigan into west virginia which just flipped from democrat to republican overnight when obama and hillary started talking about shutting down the coal industry. steve: so they're going to have a vote on impeachment on wednesday at 4:00. tuesday night the president's going to give his state of the union address. it's too bad they could not have workedded it out where he would have been acquitted before, and i know a number of house members feel like the senate let everybody down, but nonetheless are, going forward until the election the democrats are going to beat the drum that this guy should have been removed -- >> stained. what are they talking about? it was a frame job. his numbers have gone up ten points since this whole thing started. i mean, even a casual observer knows what's going on here. this was a real railroad. adam schiff has helped out the

brian: do you think the fact that we have to wait til wednesday is a stick in the eye to the president because he's got state of the union on tuesday? >> yeah, look, ideally you wouldn't -- you'd be able to do it before. there's a lot of things that go into that in terms of the rules not allowing us to meet on sunday. the chief justice, we've got to work with him on the schedule because he's got a day job -- steve: it's a timeshare. >> they're working right now as is. my view is this is not something to be taken lightly. we have never in the history of this country, 240 some odd years, we've had great presidents, we've hand scoundrels, we've never removed one, and that's different. impeachment is one thing. in the senate you vote guilty, you're voting to literally take someone out of that office, the person in whom all the power of one branch of government resides. that's a big deal, that's a really high standard, and it's very divisive for the country. so i don't think this should have happened to begin with, and it's unfortunate, but i think

the senate will do its job. steve: because, essentially, the senate would be undoing the votes -- and we've heard the president's supporters say the will of 63 million people who voted for him for president. but going forward, senator rubio, are you worried about the toxic tone that this debate took where the democrats were so so vicious and the republicans answered them, you know, blow by blow? but nonetheless, they want to make sure that this guy is never reelected, and the republican senators who will acquit him, they're after you too. >> let's understand this, a couple things. there were people that already -- impeachment is divisive under any circumstances. we don't live in normal times, okay? there are people who wantsed -- wanted to impeach the president within a month of his inauguration and and people who routinely, half the country who support the president or more

deplorables, you're automatically a xenophobe, a racist, even a traitor for supporting him. so for a lot of the president's supporters, it's a rejection of them. but the bottom line is if you read what the founders wrote about impeachment, it's clear that they didn't want that to happen. if it was a partisan exercise or if there wasn't broad public support. that's why they wanted to keep the vote in the senate. no one is can say this wasn't partisan and no one can say there's broad public support -- ainsley: so the vote will be wednesday. what happens after that? what are we going to get done? >> well, you know, look, i think we still have -- i know it's not exciting, but we still have a lot of judges that we want to get on that include from florida that are ready to go, we want to continue to move on that. we're going to have to fund the government before the end of this year. i hope we can do for florida, it'd be important to do some infrastructure, water and energy bills that are out there. none of this is exciting. we'll have a war powers debate too. so in an election year everything kind of slows down,

the other party really clamps down, but who knows what emerges in the months to come. brian: trey gowdy is one of the people who said this is not about removing the president, it's about senator schumer taking the senate. >> there's a clear political angle, no doubt about it. brian brian whether it's colorado, north carolina or maine -- >> i don't think. i don't think the american people wanted the president removed. the vast majority of americans did not. you see it in the polling, but people do not like disruptions, especially when there's an election in nine months. if you don't like the president and the job he's done, that's what the election is about in november. it's nine months away, it's not two or three years away, and that's when you hold the president accountable. i think people are going to stand up and say, look, i'm just not inflicting this trauma on the country. steve: whale, the real -- well, the real drama will be tonight on the gridiron. who do you like? >> i want kansas city to win, i'm an afc guy.

i do worry about the run defense and, you know, the 49ers, they do a lot of presnap movement and really create a lot. they can move you off the ball, and they're going to rush you with these four monsters and cover the zone over the top. but these are probably the two fastest teams that have played in the super bowl if you look at the receiving corps and running back corps. there's a lot of speed on that field. but i want kansas city to win, but i worry about san francisco running the ball down their throat. i really do. brian: for a guy who's been stuck in one room having milking and candy -- >> have your priorities straight. brian brian you just broke down -- terry bradshaw was taking notes. steve: if terry bradshaw's awake yet. impeachment, it was clearly that they didn't want that to happen, if it was a partisan exercise or wasn't broad public support. that's why they wanted two-thirds support in the senate multiply no one can say this wasn't partisan and no one can say there is broad subsupport for removing the president. steve: here's the thing. i was talking to a member of congress yesterday and a lot of the republican house members feel the senate let them down because they would have preferred to have had the impeachment vote ultimately acquitting the president before the state of the union because, you know, the president's going to be up there nine o'clock eastern time on tuesday, and he's going to be presiding over the state of the union. it's what he does every year, the president does, but the next day then they're still going to have a vote on him. we know it's a done deal, he will be acquitted, but nonetheless why didn't they get it done? they could have done it on monday or tuesday morning at the latest. ainsley: why didn't they? what do you think? steve: well, apparently it sounds like chuck schumer was threatening to drag the whole

thing out for a very long time just tacking amendment after amendment and they've got to be debated, you know, the crazy rules in the senate. so apparently he struck a deal with mitch, and this was the best deal mitch could get, and, you know, regarding the timetable, schumer won, the fact that now the president is going to go before he is acquitted in the senate. brian: the president will know how to spin it, he's going to say tomorrow it will be official we can turn the page but, meanwhile, this interview with nancy pelosi is out from the florida sun-sentinel. and here's the quote: i just say to all our friends, you want to go to the left, win the election election? let's make a decision to win the election. when you make a decision to win the election you have to make every decision in favor of winning. we understand what is at stake. you want mainstream media? there is plenty of progressive work we can do in the mainstream media without shall we say having the luxury of exuberances carving up a pie we don't have."

they don't want bernie sanders to win. he's way to the left. they are upset about the squad. one of those members is leading booing against hillary clinton. the fracturing of the democratic party is beginning, and it is because bernie sanders is surging. brian: keep in mind four years ago -- steve: keep in mind four years ago there were so many republicans and people are going will they be able to unite around whoever the nominee is? ultimately that's just the way it always works. the president's campaign manager is brad parscale, and he was asked this by judge jeanine about who potus would like to run against come november. >> i think that the two-way race is between, you know, biden and bernie right now. i think bernie is surging. i think he's doing well. >> who does the president not want to run against? >> oh, i think the president wants to fight anybody. the president will run against all of them at one time. yeah, yeah, yeah. my job is to decipher down that. but i think -- look.

you asked me a few months ago i'd say warren was a lot tougher but i think things change. steve: at one point with warren it was a lot tougher. there was a sense a couple weeks ago -- i know brian you're getting opposite reports -- bernie sanders would be the perfect opposite to the president and the way to the left they are. but there's also you feel as though there's a counter counternarrative? brian:. steve: the republicans spotted it early. they thought that if it were bernie sanders -- and they've been talking about him and his candidacy for the last four years. they would love that, because then it becomes a choice between do you want this president, the republican, or do you want this president, a socialist? i think the average american -- it's a binary choice. if you want a socialist, fine, good for you. how many americans want a essentially, a democratic socialist? ainsley: the independents, where are those that were more moderate, where would they go? would they vote for the president? or would they stay home?

positions on almost every issue, especially medicare for all. >> d.n.c. changes the rules to allow in nevada limberg will get in; what are your thoughts on that? >> i think it's a clear statement that they want someone to get in the way of bernie. steve: the big news last night, the des moines register ended a 76-year tradition, did not release a poll they do. it's the golden standard for the final poll here, but one respondent said the surveyor did not include pete buttigieg's name on it; so what we've got here guys essentially is a four way race, sanders and warren on top and warren and buttigieg rising. we'll have to find out what happens tomorrow. steve: griff, thank you very much. and as we've told you before the way it works because caucusing is different than going out to vote. everybody goes in a big room. if you're for bernie, you go stand over there. if you're for elizabeth warren

you said you think about the one you lost more. >> it was two weeks, and i felt like i was ready to play on thursday, and that's the biggest thing that coaches and players have to guard against is there's a longer period of time. now, we didn't have byes during that season. now guys are sort of used to a couple of weeks off and coaches are used to it as well. the biggest thing you have to guard against is trying to do too much in this game. you got here doing certain things so you add a few little things along the way, little wrinkles to help you. brian: so lamar jackson, the baltimore ravens quarterback m.v.p., i'm seeing as a civilian on the outside, this is a guy who can't be stopped, he's got a great arm, he's got the weapons. he got stopped. the team that stopped him, the titans, the kansas city chiefs stopped. can you look at the tape that they used to stop jackson to stop mahomes? >> i don't think so. they're entirely different. lamar is a guy that runs first and is learning to throw out of the pocket. i think this patrick he's more like russell wilson. if i'm going to study film and

i'm the san francisco 49ers i'm going to look at russell wilson because that's the way he plays. there's two plays. the one the coaches call and the one that he winds up running around and doing, a little bit like aaron rodgers so to me russell wilson would be and those games against seattle would be the closest to prepare for 'cause that's what i'm basically going to see if i'm the 49ers. brian: i watched both teams make adjustments at halftime long time way, halftime is going to be different, twice as long. kyle shanahan says, don't even come to me, stretch out first, hydrate, then come and we'll do our normal thing afterwards. is that a good strategy? >> i think it is. kyle's been look at just a few years ago. he basically understands the mentality of what's going on and the feeling in the room. andy's been to one but it was a long time ago. it's been quite a while. so to me, i think you get in there, you spend ten, 15 minutes just let 'em relax then you start to gear 'em up and bring 'em out. i always felt like that half hour -- 'cause it's about 15 minutes longer than normal -- it's critical to what you prepare yourself for for the second half.
