i think it was oversimplified, i was there when he presented the arguments. you can hear how you could pick out little pieces of apparatus all the twitter headlines in the major newspaper saying alan dershowitz is arguing he's using his own reelection to motivate himself to ukraine is a national under national interest. that is a real oversimplification of what he was saying but it goes to the fact that it's very hard to present the arguments and what they were traded to the senate trial is very carefully tell the senators you cannot say there is a smidgen of personal interest that would be impeachable because you have to go back and impeach all presidents including president obama who decided not to bomb syria for his own political motive. >> they are tweeting that your playing defense to play mildly. less than a minute left, were going to i went a few moments

the early reporting in the first-round will swamp the rest of the story and guide people away from the caucus sites because they think it's over. there is such a bottle going on in terms of reporting and coverage in the way it should be covered and all of the candidates are putting out tomorrow night in order to make sure the door slams open to the very end of the process. i think that is fascinating, how much energy there is in fear you can feel on the democratic side about what the outcome is going to be, four years later bernie sanders issue is front and center once again just like it was in 2016. it will be really fascinating to watch a. >> as i mentioned you anchor the network special impeachment coverage in the senate trial. do you believe that saturation level of coverage has an effect in most of the iowa campaign coverage until this weekend? >> i do.

i think it suck a lot of the oxygen out of the room. a lot of networks took a lot of the coverage and that was the talk of the day. now as it drags on to what looked like an acquittal vote, obviously on wednesday you still have days of coverage even in the middle of this. i do think the iowa caucus will make a comeback as far as coverage. this in itself is really fascinating even one, two or three is really going to affect the field. >> you not only had endless hours of the trial itself but you had of course bernie sanders, elizabeth warren and amy klobuchar stop in washington have to trauma a bit to speak although the postadjusted it didn't hurt bernie that much to be out of iowa. >> while they were stuck in washington handling the impeachment trial their numbers

improved and the interesting thing, joe biden was in iowa campaigning all that time and everyone assume that would give him an advantage, he appears to have weakened over the course of that time. even if you look into the south carolina, his numbers are slipping in south carolina. what is happening to joe biden and whether or not he is in south carolina, i think we won't know until people cast their vote and caucus. it is a big storyline to follow in all of the. >> nicely set up my next question joe biden reported on special report he has defied a year of negative press and many people predicting he would collapse the 20 got the race and yet here he is strong position in iowa, we don't know how it'll come out along with sanders. why do you think the president is largely misjudged in my view biden in his staying power.

>> i think they wanted to make a storyline and it was an easy story to tell. if you look at his crowds, his performances and obviously under attack by the president and the administration in the impeachment hearing and trials. so they kind of fit. but the fact that he had this power suggest if he wins here in iowa he is likely going to bounce to new hampshire in the south carolina firewall could be oliver before milwaukee. >> indeed if that happens. i think biden has immigrated he's too old and not liberal not for the party but it turns out the party might be more moderate than everybody thinks. but also we have people to judge, elizabeth warren and amy klobuchar will put their dibs on iowa and they all need a solid showing. a lot of people have different

percentages and how many delegates to win and the rules of it, located. >> the new rules that govern the caucus reporting tomorrow night there is a lot more transparency along the way. in the first-round we will get results from the first-round than the realignment round where people look if your candidate is below 50% you will look around the room and joined with another group. and then the delegate round which is the third round. you could've potentially with three different people claiming they won the caucus and all of that was part of the battle that happened after the 2016 election. in bernie sanders between hillary clinton and the party does not want that to happen again in another confronted with the search by bernie sanders and some of the democratic party that needs to put in bumper rails so he does not get the

nominee. >> chris said he would like three different winners in the contesting convention. i'm not sure if he's going to get that. [laughter] >> of course the democratic party those who do not want the socialist nominee to aggressively against sanders that could cause a backwash. finally, we do this every four years the media always gives a big boost to the iowa by ten or 12 votes and that gives you a head of steam going to new hampshire and the numbers may or may not start to change. but the criticism is grown a lot, why do we in this business put so much emphasis on the first caucus in a place that is largely wide and not representative of the country. >> there is obviously arguments both ways. the people in iowa would say they value is privilege to be able to screen the candidates and a lot of them have them in their living room, a lot of them

have been to coffee shops where there's ten and 12 people. they really screen these candidates along the way. it is a lot of retail politics. i talked to somebody who has been studying and still undecided between biden and warren and says he will make up his mind monday night. >> i love how serious the people of iowa take it. >> i agree. when you look at the outcome down the road i don't think the iowa ends up holding a disproportionate say in the matter. only jimmy carter and barack obama went on to win on iowa and then to actually win the white house as well. but it does give you playing field you get to see all of these players really go all in and i think the rest of the country gets to witness that as well. i was at andrew yang's last night and talk to people who voted for trump last time around, talk to people who are undecided between joe biden and andrew yang. these folks are paying very close attention and they love

what is it like for reporters on capitol hill trying to cover the endless hours of impeachment. we are back with susan ferrechio, you have been part of the daily grind, what is life like when you have to surrender your phone and laptop. those rules are not new, you could never bring your phone or laptop into the senate. in the house side you can pray there's a big difference. >> doesn't make it hard to be in touch with the rest of the world. >> if you want to watch the trial is nice to sit in and listen in to see what the senates expressions are. you cannot gauge where people are as arguments progress especially during the question and answer period where there was dramatic questions and moments were senators when mouth things to each other and it was the color in the room and who is doing what and paid attention. sometimes the room was a third empty. things like that you miss the

cameras aren't showing it which they were not. the rest of us did not see it. you cannot live tweet it. again you can step out of the room and get your phone and tweet it. >> there has been a lot of complaint in journalism that we are set up by mitch mcconnell recovering the trial. how does that affect you. >> first of all i been there for several decades, it's never in the public interest to restrict access. the capital is one of the best listening post in america if not the world. only because we have pretty much unfettered access pre-we push back hard against the restrictions and having to live through now, i was limited, there were times where we did miss out on conversations. >> rather than being wherever we wanted on the second floor of the capital where the senators me in the chamber we were behind votes and two or three areas. and what that did was allow the

senators to control, we had to be spoonfed the information. instead of us talking to particular people, they sent their messengers out. both parties did this print and they said what they had to say that moment. >> on that point chuck schumer was author and a lot of it taking life. with some of the republican senators especially lamar alexander, mitt romney, susan collins on the defense for the witnesses can attract reporters like you. >> we would catch them in the basement, these were such strict hours, we did end up talking to mitt romney and susan collins and we would find them at different hours. a lot of us regulars know where they are. early morning and later in the day we were able to catch them but it did allow them to get a lot of the coverage and the mob coverage that happens during the news events on the hill. >> and you showed up with
