leading and is ultimately winning. i'm sure many of you have it. and you got what you wish corporll see you then. here comes "the five." ♪ >> jesse: hello, everybody, i'm jesse watters along with katie pavlik, dana perino, greg greg gutfeld, and juan williams. it's 5:00 in new york, and this is "the five." the battle for 2020 officially kicks off with the iowa caucuses just a few hours from now. the hawkeye state could prove to be a pivotal moment in the democratic race. the parties 'establishment bracing for a bernie sanders surge while sleepy joe's allies are preparing for the worst. here is the top candidates making their final pitches. >> happy caucus day! >> you are part of an absolute

for sweeping to the state of iowa right now. >> feeling good. a lot of energy, enthusiasm, been to a lot of counties all over the county, all over the state, and it feels good. >> agreed to do phone calls, knock on doors. >> tomorrow night is the beginning. it is the beginning of the end for donald trump. >> while democrats battle it out and i welcome the trump continues to steal the spotlight. there is growing concern among the party that 2020 candidates don't stand a chance against trump, especially when facing attacks like these. >> i have little nicknames for all of them, but -- >> i'm sure they love your nicknames. >> but they are accurate. >> let's start with joe biden. >> i just think he's sleepy. i watch him. sleepy joe. >> hunter biden. >> where is hunter biden delma? >> i think he's a communist.

you mentioned elizabeth warren, a caller -- i think she's a fairy tale. >> jesse: where do you see the energy leading to if he can give us a sense of that? speak to the polls and a lot >> juan: the polls and a lot of people are saying they see bernie sanders come out. it's by 3-5 points at best and you'll see job i biden right there. and behind that you get pete buttigieg coming in, may be a little further down. and the questions of the night have to do with a b club char, the senator from neighboring minnesota, how will she do? i was surprised to hear this about elizabeth warren. he lived with warren from massachusetts. but as you know, she for a while had really surge and now it looks like this is bernie sanders' surge at just the right moment and it could be crushing for elizabeth warren. jesse called and she had

medicare for all problem, dana. >> jesse: she was out of commission and played the victim card against bernie and she's looking like she's tailing off. do you agree with juan, it's a two-person race now in iowa between biden and bernie? >> dana: i think all of us who know what's going to happen tonight and we don't. the rules of change the last time around. a new threshold you have to hit, it's 15% and then it goes to a second bout of alignment and it's a little bit confusing. i think the end result could be fairly muddled and you could see bernie sanders do quite well. i think mayor pete or even andrew yang could do well here but do not forget amy club char who campaigned really hard in the rural areas. for liz warren, if she doesn't do well here and bernie sanders

does, and he goes to new hampshire the king again, it'll be interesting to see what she continues to do. will she continue or get behind him? >> jesse: if you are running against bernie sanders, you already said you'll raise taxes on the middle tax down that class. can i raise a sound bite on one of your favorite people? chris matthews on the missing bc, this is his interpretation of the field. >> i'm not happy with this field. i think they got to find a candidate for president who can beat trump. >> do you think anybody in this could beat -- >> i'm still looking. >> katie: i was thinking of all the people who didn't make it to the iowa caucuses. beto was supposed to be the next

obama. kamala harris kept saying i'm going to move to iowa, that did not happen. polling is notoriously difficult in iowa, but bernie sanders has been here before and he doesn't want to lose again so he's been able to learn for maybe some of the mistakes or the things they did that to do last time and really get out there and knock on some doors. two elizabeth warren, if she does not do well, she'll probably drop out. joe biden, they been saying forever that it doesn't matter if he wins iowa welcome it doesn't matter if he wins new hampshire. they are basing south carolina to get him through. interesting strategy and there are excuses for losing if he does tonight will be interesti interesting. >> jesse>> jesse: setting excits pretty low. greg, i know you are going to be watching the caucuses tonight. >> greg: like a hawk. like a hawkcus.

you are welcome to america, a day after the super bowl where 50% of "the five" are hung over. unlike 50 million people at work who don't show up because we love you. trying to make it through without vomiting on jesse's nice suit. a lot of interesting people are not running. they are not participating. so this cruise seems very weak and bland. it reminds me -- when you are a kid and year parents bought that variety set of breakfast cereal? those are great. by the end of the first week, all that was left was special k and bran flakes. always special k, right? weird box. the problem with this field, it's all bran flakes and special k. especially mayor pete. you know, mayor pete is great when he's around others because

he seems interesting. he's like a great secondary character in a tv show. but when they decide to spin him off, he is a flop? you remember how much you love joey and friends. he was great. but you didn't watch "joey." it wasn't the same without rachel, ross. without other people to compare them to, it's not going to happen. as for bernie, we've been talking about bernie for a long time and i call this the pendulum. the populace and freighter that took over 2016 is now swinging back to the left. all these things are cyclical. we have the populist inferno that brought in trouble, the same mentality could bring bernie in the white house. when i share this sentiment with chris matthews, that could never happen? i said that about trump. i should have listened -- never mind... >> jesse: you are very good the day after the super bowl. >> greg: i'm crying inside.

>> jesse: i disagree with you on one thing. the never bernie movement is ten times stronger than the never trump movement. and you can see the never bernie movement already pulling out all the stops with reinvigorating the power of the superdelegates, letting the rules change so bloomberg can come in, hillary coming out of nowhere to drop bombs on bernie. i think bernie has a lot coming if you wins iowa, new hampshire. >> katie: do not know if you can hear me, jesse, i think that's very true. it's not about a difference in style or difference in rhetoric or demeter or civility. it's a completely departure from a lot of things we hold dear and america. from a policy standpoint, the enthusiasm for a bernie candidacy, he'll have his people and he'll have the 40% but i do not think the rest of the democratic party will enthusiastically get behind him.

the impeachment trial continuing as president trump gets ready to deliver the state of the union address tomorrow and on wednesday, the final vote on the impeachment is set we are put down my president trump is expected to be acquitted. regardless of the outcome, they will keep investigating this president at adam schiff saying he has no regrets with how things played out. >> i'm not letting the senators off the hook. still going to go into the senate this week and make the case why this president needs to be removed. it'll be up to the senators to make that final judgment and the senators will be held accountable for it. there is nothing i can see that we could've done differently because as the senators have already admitted, we proved our case. >> juan: meanwhile 2020 candidate joe biden getting in and heated exchange with savannah guthrie over a question about his son. >> do you think it was wrong for him to take that position

because that company wanted access to your? >> that's not true. you are saying things, you do not know what you're talking about. nobody said that. >> don't you think it's one of those things where people think, that's kind of sleazy. why would he have that job if not for who his father was? >> he's a very bright guy... >> juan: jesse, i wanted to start with the statement from adam schiff that he is no regrets about how things are played out even though acquittal, i would say, is a certainty tomorrow. >> he has to say that but i'm sure he regrets it. if they did it properly and the started out in a secret basement with no lawyers present, maybe it would've gone differently. maybe they would've built a better case. maybe they would've gone to a judge to compel business testimony and compel the senate, might've taken a few months longer but they would've handed it off to the senate a better case if they could have argued in a more convincing fashion. but they wanted to do a rush

job. they didn't care about making a strong constitutional pace. the republicans can investigate the whistle-blower. lindsey graham said he's going to call the whistle-blower or after the whole thing is on about what went down in the senate intelligence committee. so two complained that game. i think everybody has turned the page at this. >> juan: what schiff is saying that he feels that he did make the case and some republicans feel he did make the case and he feels that this is now in the forefront, the trump corruption of the american political mind. >> dana: they still lost and this is a political loss. remember in "pac-man" you go along and ding, ding, ding, eat the fruit and you get another man? that's president trump, what's

happening because of impeachment. in the last hour on the floor of the senate, democrats from west virginia who thought about voting with republicans on acquittal. he thought maybe we should do a censure vote, please, mr. president, don't do that again. republicans, why would they go along with that now? that was a tool of the democrats had at their disposal for months, they went all out, went for broke on impeachment. i do not think the republicans should cave into censure after all of this. >> juan: you still have some of the country, not only supports impeachment but removals and schiff is saying i'm not going to let republicans off the hook. what do you think? >> katie: americans care about other issues like health care and the economy. don't know if it's a priority, people would say that

impeachment continues to be something that senators and congress spoke upon. if you take it and look at the history of the impeachment process, all of the momentum with this goes with president trump, bipartisan vote in the house, you have joe manchin who may vote for acquittal, we don't know. coming out and saying that the house it and give them necessarily everything they needed to hear everything. and also, look at the strategy of adam schiff. you could argue he was never really interested in impeaching the president because he knew right away, this is all about 2020 turning the senate over to chuck schumer which he reiterated by saying that the senators, we were talking about election, this is what it's all about from the beginning. >> juan: i think that's smart. you think of who came out on top on that one? >> greg: joe and his head

things he's clint eastwood. but everybody else, he's one of the old guys from the muppets. here's the deal with impeachment, have you ever played checkers again somebody and you beat them really, really badly and they go, welcome let's play 2 out of 3? you beat them with 2 out of 3 but let's do 3 out of 5 question mike that's adam schiff. so dana understands this theory, i call it the law and order affect. impeachment in his like reruns of law and order. hope that nobody notices it so you never change the channel and you end up on the soapbox. what democrats will do with impeachment, they are like law and order reruns and they'll become as mundane as living next to an airport. used to think claims are interesting but you say, that is another plane. >> jesse: you are amazing after the super bowl! i'm just going to sit here and shut up.

shakira-lo was amazing. two beautiful women amazingly athletic dancing their heart out, the backup dancers, and little clothing. the dancer the clothing ratio was 50:1. what's not to love? maybe some of the strippers inspired moves were inappropriate for family viewing, meaning kids, things i do not have, thank god. but the media gets two bytes on this apple. first to say it's empowering because that's the word of the day. second, they might've found a woman leg spread pressing her fingers against her you know what is not exactly a family affair. but hey, that's modern entertainment today. it's not one molarity fits all, and if you don't like it, that's on you. the media loves the prism of two, factually you can find entertaining but not for kids. maybe people should keep that in mind. or we can just assume that culture has changed so much that

would they say if t question. jesse watters, either of these fine anchors who are here? >> jesse: i have on my hands these voter analysis statistics here. very interesting about voter contact. it looks like the sanders campaign has contacted about 80% of iowa democrats, with the warren and mayor pete campaign a close second and third. but the biden campaigns only contacted about half of iowa democrats. that speaks to his lack of organization and the great organization from the bernie sanders people. >> we don't know, jesse, how effective those contacts are and how well reaching out to some money on the phone and how that motivate somebody to go to the caucus or not. but bernie sanders, elizabeth warren, actually pete buttigieg also really had a great ground game here in iowa and over the

next two hours we'll see how good. >> katie: just because somebody calls you on behalf of a candidate does not mean you vote for them. >> jesse: if bernie called me, i just hang up. >> juan: it's clear that health care is on everybody's mind here in iowa and nationally, although the poll is just of iowa democrats. i would throw out there to bret, if you see a public option at 80%, single-payer at 70%, what does that say to republicans i wonder? >> it says that the democratic party has evolved. remember what we were, one, in the obama administration. it was talked about as the camel's nose under the tent. now it's the whole camel, it's under the tent. i think it'll paint a picture for the general election that is going to be pretty stark if one of these candidates at the top here becomes the nominee.

florida. that's a woman who was reunited with her dog after three years. her name is monica mathis, she's on facebook, and she sees a new campaign launched by motorworks brewing in florida. they teamed up with manatee county animal services to try to spread the word about adoptable dogs because they wanted them to find forever homes. so she's all mine and she sees her dog hazel that's been missing for three years. she calls down there to the manatee county animal services and sure enough it was her that reunited -- it's unclear how hazel made her way from florida to iowa at all because a can of beer and a really great idea by the spear company, they are reunited and back together. >> that is awesome! >> fet is a great coincidence. >> we haven't done this in a while, so let's do it quickly. ♪ animals are great ♪ animals are great ♪ animals are great i've always said that climate change is for the birds, in a good way. check out this thoughtful crow who does his own recycling.

look at that. understands exactly what to do. doing his part for the environment. i'm not that crazy about recycling. we all know that it costs more than it's actually worth, at least it -- it's the thought that counts. crows are the smartest birds on the planet. >> i don't even recycle. and a crow recycles. >> sometimes they just put the recycling in the trash anyway. >> that's probably why i do it. >> we all know that cpr is a life-saving thing for humans but it actually works on lizards t too. a firefighter in new south wales, australia, give cpr to this lizard using very small tiny compressions on saturday. if the went unconscious after it almost drowned in the swimming pool skimmer, but look at that. she's breathing. started breathing again and within half an hour the lizard was on his way, hopefully not next to the pool. the fire station post the video and it has gone viral, so now you know. cpr works if you just barely -- >> what was he choking on? >> he almost drowned!
