[cheers and applause] ♪ keep waiting for you. pete: all right, take your blood pressure down after that. good morning, welcome to the saturday edition of "fox & friends." come on in. here we go. it's been a big week, long week. look who is here jason chaffetz and emily compagno. emily: happy saturday. so happy to have you with us. what did you think about the debate? jason: highlight reel oficallofcliches. i think donald trump is stronger politically today than he has ever been. and i keep saying that week after week. i think he gets stronger and stronger. this is a divided field. this is somebody who is looking for a leader.

this is a group that i think is headed towards a brokered convention. i really do. pete: i think you are right. watching it visually, such a big stage. and then these little bitty seven podiums. if that's your -- i think the realization that's your field. yeah, mike bloomberg is out there spending a billion dollars. don't forget about him. once you get to the performance itself. a lot of them played sort of to their who they are. right? there weren't a whole lot of surprises last night. you know who these folks are. pretty straightforward. after a great week by donald trump i don't think they moved a lot of needles. >> it was interesting you bring up bloomberg so too did the moderators there even though he wasn't there, he was certainly a topic. the largest point actually was made by yang which continues to point out you guys are fixating on the president. he keeps winning. when are you going to start talking about policy. pete: yang keeping president he can't crack 1%.

tells you where the democrats are right now. emily: good morning, griff. griff: good morning, emily, jason, and pete. i have arranged the bells by the way to ring right when i started talking to you. listen, we sought gloves come off last night. we have been waiting for all these debates to see it. we finally got it. although, the person they were attacking was a bit of a surprise. it is that surging mayor pete buttigieg. watch some of the lesser tier candidates go after him. >> it is easy to go after washington because that's a popular thing to do. it is much harder to lead. and much harder to take those difficult positions. we have a newcomer in the white house and look where it got us. >> moving this country beyond where it is now in significant ways. one of the ways to do that is to make sure you have someone who knows how to get things done and can lead the free world at the same time. >> you have to have experience to take him down. this is not a question of he's a nice guy who is going to listen. we need people with experience. that's why i'm worried about

mayor pete. griff: it wasn't just pile on pete, guys. we also saw them go after the hometown favorite, bernie sanders, who has been doing very well here and expected to finish very strong. joe biden finally saying what everyone has been waiting for to call him out for being a democrat socialist. then, the moderator asks anybody else have a problem with this? watch this. >> bernie has labeled himself, not me, a democratic socialist. i think that's the label that the president is going to lay on everyone running with bernie if he is the nominee. >> is anyone else on the stage concerned about having a democratic socialist at the top of the democratic ticket? >> i'm not. >> now, the real story here that we have all been watching though is that surging mayor buttigieg's numbers. have you for the first time buttigieg on top at 25%. up two points from yesterday. sanders holding at 24%.

warren 14%. and biden still in fourth place. we will see what the campaign trail brings today. but it's very clear buttigieg is a threat here now. guys? pete: griff, thank you very much. prevent it. you want to talk about the debate it was about socialism and soleimani and keeping both of them alive. seriously. i mean, ultimately, the question is socialism, are you okay with that on top of your ticket? after like three seconds amy klobuchar kind of goes i don't think so. i mean, they had their moment to push back. biden kind of did but he has been weak throughout. and when it comes to killing the iranian terrorist general, biden who gets everything wrong says he would have not have ordered it, of course. bernie says he would like to throw the state department at iran. and then buttigieg said, you know, no evidence that that keeps us safer. so, hey, they want socialism and they want terrorist generals to stay alive. that's your platform and the rest of it was all lunancy too. good luck with that. emily: amy klobuchar had strong moments she always does in the dough baits. never gives her the momentum

to actually surge. we see mayor pete in the preliminary polls coming out of new hampshire, is he gobble bling up what is totally being disseminated in the support for biden which we could have predicted and a long time ago. jason: in politics you want to be everybody's number two choice. you are seeing the demise of joe biden and buttigieg gets the benefit of that the leader of the democrats right now is not even a registered democrat. he is an independent in bernie sanders. i don't know what's going to happen exactly in new hampshire. i don't think elizabeth warren has much of a case after losing two in a row. ronna mcdaniel, she weighed in on this, she, of course, being the g.o.p. leader, party chairman, said the dem debate was emblematic of the democrats' week. a total disaster, short on ideas to actually help americans. donald trump had one of his best of his presidency, huge turnout in iowa. strong state of the union, acquittal, and a fantastic jobs report. trump is the best choice in 2020. the president really did

have an salute fabulous week. we did in one week what tropicanormally takes a month. but donald trump did have an exceptional week. pete: yeah. you have been in politics. i have observed it. it's hard to see anything quite like this week. like you line it up with the state of the union, with the iowa debacle. they still haven't finished counting the votes. we will get to new hampshire. today is national iowa day. look it up. it's a real thing. iowa get on it. maybe count those votes today. it's your day. and then the jobs report. you can't script it. and then th the way he held court and we are going to celebrate whether a we have been through, what the country has been through the last two or three years. couple still in the white house, names you know lieutenant colonel vindman as well as gordon sondland who were part of the testimony against the president were also members of his administration. well, until yesterday. now the white house decided to let these two guys go.

emily: we have headlines covering that "the washington post" says trump outs vindicationland and sondland key impeachment witnesses. "new york times" chiming in trump fires impeachment witnesses gordon sondland and alexander vindman in post-acquittal purge. politico joining impeachment witnesses ousted amid fears of trump revenge campaign. pete: jason, is this just a purge and revenge. jason: one of the best moves president trump made putting in robert o'brien as the national security advisor. he was working in the state department chief hostage negotiator. he came in after john bolton. he had always had plans to pare that down. get tighter control to what is going on in there. robert o'brien you will sigh him more and more. one of the best that he brought in. i have got to tell you, that's going to make a difference. this is well under motion before this all happened. but, the president gets to select and have his team in

place. pete: they serve at the pleasure of the president. he can fire them whenever he wants. he waited until this was all done. well, joe biden, he will probably make vindman his chief of staff. it will probably never happen but if he did, maybe. here is what he said at the debate last knight about. >> this colonel vindman got thrown out of the white house last night walked out. he should be pinning a medal on vindman and not on rush limbaugh. [applause] >> i think we should all stand and give colonel vindman a show of how much we supported him. stand up and clap for vindman. get up there. [cheers and applause] who we are. that's who we're. we are not what trump is. emily: he is still rehashing that frankly stale get on up here come on. it's not going to work. i also tak issue with this. i did plenty of details.

were a great deal of moments that president trump gave tremendous honor to and great moment at the state of the union. pete: has anybody spent more time talking about freedom than rush limbaugh. it was a powerful moment. i loved it. emily: turning to your headlines. we begin with a fox news alert. the u.s. embassy in china announcing first american death from the coronavirus. the 50-year-old man died at a hospital in china. right now 13 americans are diagnosed with the virus on a cruise ship near tokyo and more than 400 americans are quarantined on the ship. we will speak to a couple on that crews in the 9:00 hour. stay with us. four chinese passengers on a different crews are being tested for the infection after the ship docked in new jersey. 722 people have died from the coronavirus in china more than 34,000 people are diagnosed worldwide. 12 of them are in the u.s. now federal investigators are saying the engine of the helicopter carrying kobe bryant was working properly

debate stage in new hampshire last night. it was late, 8:00 to 11:00 p.m. making latest pitch to voters. what did the voters actually think. here with the dials is partner and president at maslansky and partners. author of the book "persuasion" there is the book. congratulations on that. >> thank you so much. pete: before we get into specific clips, your impression last night. >> this is a pivotal point in the whole process. this is when you start to seat candidates in a different way. i think you will start to see mayor pete in a totally different way than have you before. bernie is now more, you know, seeming more like a frontrunner than he had before rather than people like there is no way. pete: two of those front and center last night. get to the first clip. this is buttigieg defending biden. watch. >> do you think that there is a danger for the democratic party to nominate a candidate who is still under the threat of investigations? >> no. and we are not going to let them change the subject. this is not about hunter biden or vice president biden biden. this is about an abuse of power by the president.

surprisingly a d. this is one of the only moments that stood out to folks with vice president biden. i don't think it's enough for him to continue to surge. mayor pete is the one to watch out for right now. pete: people say he is trying to counter punch is he good at that. >> authenticity is not his role. people want him to be the statesman and grown up in the room. that's not the way he is behaving. in this particular moment it worked for him. rest of the moment was kind of flat. everything he did sort of right across the board. didn't excite or repel people. it was very much average. pete: you have to gain votes. here is bernie sanders. a lot talk about the supreme court and who they would pick. here is bernie sanders on roe v. wade last night. >> is there a litmus test for those of us up here moo for me there, is i will never nominate any person to the supreme court or the federal courts in general who is not 100 percent pro-roe v. wade. >> you could see democrats not as excited as they might have been at some other

♪ pete: time now for numbers by the numbers. first, $117 million. that's how much money the rnc says it raised online during the impeachment process of president trump. the fundraising campaign bringing in 1 million new donors since it started in september. next, $12.6 billion. that's how much americans' credit card debt rose in december according to the federal reserve. it was the biggest one month jump since 1998. and finally a big win for news corps' newspapers. the "wall street journal" has sold 2 million digital subscriptions. a record high and a 13% rise from last year. sister service dow jones set its own record with 3.5 million subscriptions. and 4% revenue growth outpacing the "new york times." pete: thanks, jason. the u.s. embassy in china announcing the first american death from the

coronavirus. the 60-year-old man died in the hospital in wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak. emily: it comes as 8 more americans deadly virus and. four passengers on a royal caribbean cruise ship being monitored for the virus after the ship docked just outside new york city. jason: here to discuss is fox news medical contributor dr. marc siegel. good morning. >> good morning. jason: i can't imagine being on these cruise ships, you are breathing similar air, right? and you have thousands of passengers and some of them have been infected. what do you do if you are on one of these ships. >> jason, you painted a really gloomy picture and people are panicking. you know what happens when you panic. you take fewer precautions. not disinfecting and coughing and sneezing more and spreading the virus. to make it fear factor worse, if someone new gets infection on the ship, that re-sets the dial on the

quarantine. so you think it's a two week quarantine and off except new cases mean newer exposure mean extending the quarantine. that ship, diamond princess could be at sea for weeks until we figure out how to control it. emily: doctor, speak to the fact that china is seemingly mischaracterizing the amount of those infected in its borders. how troubling is that to you if we don't have the right information and if they are down playing the amount of those either dead or infected? >> emily, that's been true from the beginning. i completely agree with that's happening. the suppression of information. they pretended in december this wasn't even a real virus. one of the whistleblowers now has died from it, dr. li. supposedly from this virus. and they suppressed information. they are once again suppressing information. i believe there is well over 34,000 cases. probably closer to 100,000. figures are 720 deaths in china, mostly in china i think it's way more than that as well. it makes it harder to control. if you don't know what the actual risk is within china.

how do you know what the risk is outside of china? at least the united states, of course, has closed travel from china, all the quarantining of people in the united states have very good public health measures. pete: let's say the authoritarians in china do their job because they can lock people down without consequence. they do that anyway. let's say they do that and we manage the cruise ships. speak straight about the real level of threat from americans that see these headlines all day long. people, should they be worried? >> no. and way more worry is occurring here, pete, than should be. people are walking down the street with masks about a virus that literally only has infected 12 people. we have to look overseas and see what is happening there. some new studies came out the other day that show in a major medical journal from china that show that if you are immuneio control mow comprod elderly, risk are serious. if you are younger and get this virus you will probably do okay. we have to figure out a way to control spread from

china. that's the biggest problem. so right now here in the united states, the risk is very, very, very low. over there, look, you know the chinese authorities are now closing pharmacies so you can't get flu drugs to try to force people to go to doctors. that's a mess because they are in the middle of a flu epidemic over there. they are not controlling the problem over there in china. that's going to lead to a greater risk to the world. i think we're going to see a worldwide pandemic from this. i don't think we are going to see anything here of the level of what is happening there though. because our centers for disease control, the trump administration is not getting enough credit for this. hhs, cdc, the state department, all doing a great job. we have to get boots on the ground though over in china which hasn't happened yet. pete: all right. dr. siegel, great information. >> thanks, guys. good to see you. pete: coming up, the latest on the ongoing, never ending iowa caucus chaos. now some in the democrat party are points the finger at the he had head of the dnc. emily: did you know that pete technically scored the

was really incredible for me. the nfl has gone through a lot lately and to destill it down to the game of football and america's love of sport and competition and what unites us was awesome. hey, it was miami. so there was nothing to complain about. jason: it was the chiefs with the victory. pete: thats would good. emily: thanks for that, you guys. turning enough to to your headlines. the dnc chair tom perez facing heat from his own party in the wake of iowa's caucus chaos. perez under fire for calling for a recanvas as the final results were being reported. democrats, including alexandria ocasio-cortez and ilhan omar say perez should be held accountable for the failed caucuses. others have called for his resignation. and the state is one step closer to banning assaulted weapons. virginia house committee passing a bill that would ban sales of semiautomatic weapons silencers and magazines. it is held for a full floor

vote: a former investment ceo is facing the toughest punishment in the college admission scandal. yesterday, a judge sentenced douglas hodge to serve nine months in prison. 500 hours of community service. and pay $750,000 in fines. prosecutors said hodge conspired with william rick singer to pay more than $850,000 in bribes to get his children into elite universities. now, prince harry is reportedly opening up about the loss of his mother, princess diana. sources telling page 6 he told at a j.p. mortgage summit in miami he has been in therapy three years. he also reportedly opened up her death affected his childhood and his decision to step down with a senior royal with his levee. the duchess of sussex also reportedly in attendance introduced her husband at the star-studded event. those are your headlines. pete: here they come, america. we will have more of the royals than we want. we tried to get rid of them

and now they are back. my goodness. adam, what do you think about that? adam: why did we fight a revolutionary war? pete: exactly. adam: so we didn't have to worry about it. and here we are worried about it. pete: are we worried about weather at all. adam: we had an eastern storm sweep across the country. at this point is really beginning to wind down. think of that winter weather. the problem with it though it was a true cold front. the back side of this system. even though it's now clearing off. the temperatures are a whole lot colder on the back side of it. this is your 24 hour temperature change if you live in washington, d.c. about 25 degrees colder than it was about 25 hours ago. that is a true cold front sweeping through that area. that leaves our temperatures currently sitting at 30 degrees here in new york. very cold 1 degree back in minneapolis. so, guys, it's winter. it feels like winter. i suppose this is exactly where we should be. rental vacancy in q 2 was, you know, the lowest in years. because everyone is renting. pete: generally, we are told that millennials, they can't afford their student debt. they can't afford. there is all these burdens that are preventing them from joining the economy. what's changing here that they are able to do this. >> rents are just so high as well. right? so when you do the rent-buy analysis it makes sense to buy especially in places in the u.s. where you can get a beautiful home for -- like in oklahoma city or fort worth all of these places, right? obviously if you have a job in new york city you are are not going to move to oklahoma city. there are place that's can move to that make sense in the representative-buy analysis. because you have to live somewhere, right? pete: sure, you do. what are the tips for people looking at homes right now. >> biggest tip and most important is do your homework. do it early, do it often. this is the biggest purchase of your life. go out there. go to open houses. compare houses.

but for a good reason. because more people are joining the labor force. more than that, wages grew 3.1%. is this another sign of more economic good news to come? probably the most straightforward question i have ever read on a teleprompter. here to weigh in is professor of business and economics at kings college my good friend brian brenberg. brian, how do you -- break down these numbers for us. >> you hit the headline. you had a huge job gain this month. we haven't seen that size gain for a little while now. but it suggests we have got momentum coming in to 2020. you also show wages growing above 3% again which is great. which means americans are getting a pay raise. they are growing each faster for production level workers. it's not the bosses who are getting the biggest raises here. front line workers getting it. more people coming off the sideline to get in the labor force. taken together, these numbers are really really strong. if you put them in the context of the state of the union earlier this week. we were talking about, you know, what's true in that speech? what isn't? this is true. you can't argue with these numbers. they are big and they are

jason: a fox news alert. the united states announcing the first american death from the coronavirus. emily: it comes as more americans are diagnosed while quarantined on a cruise ship near tokyo. pete: our own jonathan serrie joins us with more on this. good morning. >> good morning to you. the u.s. embassy in beijing confirms that a 60-year-old u.s. citizen who had been hospitalized with coronavirus has died at a hospital in wuhan, china. wuhan, of course, is the epicenter of this outbreak. and this patient is believed to have been the first american to die from this novel coronavirus. the outbreak has claimed at least 722 lives worldwide. 86 of those deaths confirmed in just the last 24 hours. and there are more than 34,000 cases internationally, although 99% of those cases are in

infected. 10 of them are travel from wuhan and two are spouses of those. so, given what we have been trying to do is namely contain this in the sense of inhibiting travel into the country from people within that area. thus far, we have been quite successful. those individuals have been identified, isolated and their contacts have been traced. so if we can keep the lid on this like this, so far, things are going well. but the risk is still there. although the risk for the american public is low, this could change because the situation in china is really quite serious. as you know, every day you report thousands of new cases. and then many more deaths each day the situation is still fluid. it's still a dynamic situation. we really can't tell when it's going to turn around and come down. so, really now it's just trying to do everything you can to contain and prepare

for this. emily: doctor, how much are the efforts of the task force being frustrated by the fact that china is mischaracterizing the level of infections they have in their own country? >> well, i'm not -- i'm not so sure you could say they are actually mischaracterizing. i think there are clearly more infections there than we are seeing being reported. but, remember, the infections that are being reported there, the over 30-some odd thousand are individuals who come to the attention of the healthcare providers. i'm almost certain as all of my health professionals are, that there are a group of individuals, a larger, larger group that are either minimally symptomatic or a symptomatic. so the denominator of that array of people who are being reported is probably much larger. and we know that i mean, the thing we would really like to do and we have been asking this for some time, is to become part of the who

team that goes to china so we could look with our own ice and interact with our colleagues there thus far. we have not been able to do that. jason: i think that's one of the great frustrations. you want it figure out how it's transmitted. how the incubation period works. correct? the chinese are not allowing the united states officials to come in and join them in studying. this we have the best doctors in the world. >> well, you know, they also have good people there because, you know, these are people prior to the coronavirus that we have collaborated with for years. if not decades. so we have a pretty good idea that the incubation period is probably about five days. the things that we would really like to know is the extent of transmission in an asymptomatic way. in other words, if someone is a symptomatic can they transmit? i think they can. we are getting dribbles of report coming in people if

not i symptomatic can transmit. the extent to which that occurs is unclear. usually that's not a major driver of the outbreak. we don't know that right now. pete: certainly drives decisions like cruise ships that impact people's lives. can they be released if they are not showing symptoms. we have to leave it right there. dr. fawshy, thank you for your time and your information. >> good to be with you. pete: appreciate it. turning now to some additional headlines starting with this fox news alert. a manhunt underway for a thai soldier accused of opening fire killing at least 10 people. this is video posted on facebook outside of a shopping mall where the gunman is believed to be hold up.
