"they have a really boring deal going on. still waiting for the iowa results. votes were fried, big crowds in manchester." in the wake of the iowa caucus disaster, a republican operative told politico the president is well-positioned heading into november saying, "the campaign doesn't have to do anything but step back and watch the democrats demolish themselves." this is like a dream scenario. if you had asked me at the beginning of all of this which democrats would be the weakest to run against from the moderate and progressive lanes, the answers would have been buttigieg and bernie." steve, what do you think about that? i don't agree with that because politics now is about narrow

passion. trump's supporters are so passionate, bernie's supporters are really passionate. >> steve: i totally disagree with everything. >> harris: [laughs] >> steve: whoever that operative is pay the energy and that bringing movements, that is real. i went to one of his events in iowa, when i was there less we can. it's really something. with pete buttigieg, look, there's something interesting about that. you can imagine and inspiring people. i think it's ridiculous to underestimate them. it's true that right now the democrats look like they are demolishing themselves. that's all great, but you can't get complacent about it. the bit i really disagree with in that comment was that you have to sit back and leave it to the democrats to self-destruct. no, there's a couple of really important things that have to happen. first of all, the fundamental -- especially the economy -- have to continue to be going in the . right now one of the reasons i think people are feeling so confident about reelection is that the country is in good

shape. the economy is doing so well. people are feeling that. as well as that, you've got to have a message that brings people in. that's why last week was so great for president trump, starting with the super bowl. that ad bringing people in on the super bowl, the state of the union emphasizing the different parts of his message that we haven't seen so much of, that is really important. they've got to really push that. i think they will. the idea that they have to sit back -- >> harris: you talked about the economy, according to the rnc, trump campaign, the joint fund-raising committee, the rate in $117 million off online fund-raising efforts opposing the impeachment of president trump. he seems to be set up right now. i always worry -- there's a million years between now and the election, right? any time you say somebody has a clear run at it or things are dissolving -- >> harris: i know one thing, there are million new cycles between now and then. >> melissa: at least. >> harris: i've done a drill down that of traveling on the

demographics of voters, and why pete buttigieg -- although sanders today, and some polling, has jumped ahead -- way he could conceivably do well in that state. university of new hampshire, school of public policy, printed something i thought really stuck out. they have a high rate of turnover in their population. just to give you an idea, five years, in the past five years, 244,000 people have moved into new hampshire's state and economy. 214,000 have left. the people who are coming in are decidedly much younger and much more culturally and racially diverse population. the new hampshire population is really aging. that plays a role. they are looking for what barack obama described years ago with hillary clinton, the need for new car smell. as you head into this primary, i'm wondering if republicans don't take advantage to that. that's what a rally does, you get to bring some young people out. >> melissa: you bring the young people out, also you don't want to discount mike bloomberg. if you're not from here, you might not realize that he was a

lifelong democrat. he became a republican at the left second in order to run for mayor, then he lobbied to change the term limit. he was a 3-term mayor, which was against the rules when he came to office. you got to watch that man. >> kennedy: and he spent millions of dollars in order to secure that third term, so he is no stranger to this. i've been saying all along that if this were a republican who had already spent $300 million, we are only on our second primary, our second early voting state. voters, especially democrats, would lose their minds. i do think you are right that there is a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of youth on mayor pete's side, but people like my mom really like him. he's practical, he's more moderate, he makes sense, he doesn't give into these emotional arguments. that's what's driving the sanders support is. i wish i had a can of it. >> melissa: dagen, real quick? >> dagen: i don't think there's any good licensee. we read in the beginning, the g.o.p. operative, it's just

>> harris: we are awaiting the first court appearance of the suspected gunman accused of ambushing new york city police officers into coke separate attacks over the weekend. alex hogan's love for us in the bronx with details. alex? >> harris, that's right. just within the next two hours we are set to see 45-year-old robert william. he is accused of shooting two different police officers, so he has a charge of attempted murder. both of these officers shot within 12 hours. within a day of each other, now both are going hom home. take a look at the video we have, just moments ago, one of those officers leaving the middle don't like lincoln medical center after a gunshot wound to the left arm on sunday morning. it was around 8:00 a.m. yesterday when gunfire rang out in the 41st precinct.

william stands accused of barging in the firing at officers at close range. police say after running out of bullets he gave up his weapon and laid down. the night before, only blocks away, two police officers came under fire after sitting in their patrol event. one officer was shot in the neck and chin but was released from the lincoln medical center yesterday. the president of the police union said officers are now the targets. >> they are coming after us. the first thing i thought when i got this call, "another cop was shot 12 hours later?" they are hunting us. >> fears heighten, he says, after baylor form that went into effect in january. the bill prevents judges from setting bail for certain nonviolent crimes. supporters of the bill say bail reform will level the playing field for people from different socioeconomic backgrounds, especially for those unable to pay bail. frustration on both sides of

that argument. again, both officers are expected to be okay, and despite this murder charge that he will face when he comes here, he was supposed to be in court here today anyway for a dui charge he had. so today we are learning though the judge will hear all of those charges at once. harris? >> harris: thank you very much. meanwhile, president trump going after top new york democrats. governor andrew cuomo and mayor bill de blasio. he tweeted this. "i grew up in new york city, and over many years got to watch how great new york city's finest are now because of weak leadership at governor and mayor. stand away, water thrown at them, regulations, and lack of support. our wonderful new york police are under assault her and stop this now x and i" governor cuomo's camp pushing back, staying this is a low blow even from the president who has been feuding with the governor and de blasio.

"our city is hurting now. the only appropriate responses thoughts, prayers, and solidarity with our officers. this is no time for division." >> melissa: he should take his own advice. >> steve: for goodness' sakes. what do they say when it's an incident of gun violence can make "you can't just do thoughts and prayers!" now it's time to get in the policy or commit over guns. it's simply appropriate here. what you are seeing here in new york and elsewhere throughout the country, and a california where i live, is a ruling-back of successful crime-fighting policies that stood firmly by the police. empowered them to take action, particularly on what used to be called low-level crime. that's going in reverse. it's leading to an increase in crime, after many years when it's gone down. if you are the mayor of a city, the first thing you have to do, your top priority is the people who live there. you've got to be with the police. yes, you can work with them to

reform their practices and make them more efficient, save money, that's all great. but you can't exhibit attitude that is antipolice. that is what de blasio has been doing practically since the moment he got there. i think it is just -- you reap what you sow. that's what we are getting now. >> harris: we saw a slippery slope and reported on fox news, the officers that have the buckets of water thrown at them. and that it just sort of kept escalating with people surrounding officers in pennsylvania and philly, at that hostage situation they were pelting the police officers who responded to that, from behind. technically an ambush. >> kennedy: i don't understand how they are signing up new recruits. it's very difficult in this environment. i look at this, and what it's expected not only police officers across the country but also here in new york city where you are not just community policing, it's a counterterrorism operation and you have to keep crime down. you have to keep up the perception that new york city is a safe and wonderful place to go so businesses here thrive and

don't shatter their doors. unfortunately that's not happening. when we talk about not politicizing the situation, mayor de blasio has reached out t to the federal government for help with homelessness. are you going to tell me now that the way cops are treated, that is a federal problem? at some point he's got to take responsibility. he is in charge of the police force. >> harris: i want to get to this, one top nypd official warning officers to keep a low profile. "if you are utilizing public transportation, do not wear your uniform or other items bearing the department name or logo. if you are driving your personal vehicle or parking on a public street, do not place any agency identifiers in view, as this may result in vandalism to your vehicle." i see you shaking your head, melissa. >> melissa: i mean, that's amazing. keep a low profile? the job of police exactly the opposite. when they are being advised to do this and they live in a city where that's necessary, you see exactly what's wrong. it starts with the low-level

crime. that they say isn't a crime and should be punished. whether it's vagrants in the subway, or in starbucks, chasing people out, it ends up escalating to violence. people being shoved in front of subway cars. all these things start small and get more and more out of control, which is the place we are at, dagen, right? >> dagen: i get her, i come to work at about 3:00 in the morning and i get harassed regularly. if i go outside in the middle of the night, i'm harassed. you know what? even if somebody lays a hand on you, if somebody punches you in the face, there is no bail. they get written a ticket and they are right back on the street. so what position are our police officers put in? what position are the citizens here in new york city and new york state? no cash bail for misdemeanors or nonviolent felonies. you can rob the local drugstore and get a little appearance to get anywhere right back out on the street. crime in new york city is spiking. the beginning of this year in the first few weeks, crime
