for 2020, jacqui heinrich has the latest from las vegas, first steve harrigen awaiting for rally. >> a big crowd waiting patiently for bernie sanders rally at the university of houston, sanders is holding 4 different rallies in texas over the weekend in the runup to super tuesday and you can really feel a sense of energy here and momentum, sanders won convincingly in nevada in almost every category, men, women, college educated, noncollege, union, no union, biggest march was with young voters giving 66% of the vote and speeches so far in texas, sanders paid little attention to democratic competitors, instead he is focusing his attention on president trump. >> they are sick and tired of a president who is undermining

american democracy who thinks he's above the law and who apparently has never read the constitution in this country. >> sanders has said he expects to win the texas primary, it's the second biggest one on super tuesday, 228 delegates will be given out proportionately and, of course, in presidential elections no democrat has won texas since 1976 since jimmy carter, president trump won over hillary clinton by 9 points but 2 million new voters added to the texas rolls in just the past 5 years. jillian and eric, back to you. jillian: large number, steve, thank you so much for the report. eric: the rest of the democratic field trying to get past nevada and focus on playing catch-up with senator sanders, the race for the nomination now moves to south carolina, you know, the former vice president joe biden's fire wall to try to keep him competitive in this race.

another reason why we are going to win this election. >> former vice president joe biden came in a distant second but one enough support to claim his first victory of this primary season, he placed fourth in iowa, fifth in new hampshire, not even meeting the threshold for delegates there but the campaign long insisted first two voting states don't represent the country, he needed to perform better with diverse electorate before heading to south carolina and second place finish now brings his campaign back to life. >> you put me in a position, you know, the press is ready to declare people dead quickly. [laughter] >> but we are alive and we are coming back and we are going to win. >> slightly behind biden in third is former mayor pete buttigieg, slip for him since iowa when he essentially tied with sanders, he congratulated sanders on his win but quickly criticized putting the election in the hands of democratic socialist, most of the party would be alienated.

jillian: welcome back, bernie sanders headlining a texas rally this afternoon after projected win in nevada caucuses last night cementing his status as the party's national front-runner, but the self-described democratic socialist had some challenges ahead including mike bloomberg's plan to swoop in on super tuesday, let's talk about whether the vermont senator has the momentum to go the distance and face off in a general election against president trump, white house correspondent, good to see you, thanks for joining us. >> good morning. good afternoon, now. [laughter] jillian: so what do you think? do you think he has it right now to continue going the distance? >> well, bernie sanders performed very well in nevada and he was able to show there that he can win minority voters, he did well with hispanics winning 53% of them i believe in

nevada, he also got roughly a quarter of african americans so that might tell us a few things heading into south carolina this week, that's a state that joe biden is relying onto stay in this race but bernie sanders since he ran in 2016 has invested more resources in south carolina and so there will certainly be a battle there in south carolina. jillian: you mentioned some of those nonwhite voters, those numbers out of nevada, let's go ahead and take a look at some of these on the national level and this is among african american primary voters and you'll see joe biden with 31% and bernie sanders with 29% from a week ago and univision poll among latino voters have sanders and biden, sanders has the edge over him a little bit with 30% nationally in nevada, he had the edge 33% to 22%, what do those numbers tell you as we go into south carolina and really beyond? >> again, in south carolina where african-american voters are something that joe biden

believes that he will do well among that demographic, that's also a demographic that bernie sanders would need to do well with, right, in this particular primary and so those numbers are looking good for both of them, so we might not know until the voting actually begins in south carolina, but you had earlier asked generally about bernie sanders and how it is looking for bernie sanders and the amount of money that bernie sanders has been able to raise so far has helped him to be able to run advertising and so really develop a ground game in the states nationally and even some of the democrats now who are raising large amounts of money after the debate performances do not have the advantage of time on their side, super tuesday is just around the corner, jillian, and he has been putting the resources in and making the -- laying the ground work for this for years now. jillian: you mentioned super tuesday, how does someone like mike bloomberg come out on super tuesday, what do you think he needs to do from now and then

because the debate was not his finest showing? >> well, he will have another debate on tuesday in which he will be have an opportunity to do better, but the other question, jillian, what do the other democrats on stage decide to do, elizabeth warren heavily targeting him in the last debate with something that helped her raise money and raised national profile but pete buttigieg has been making the argument that bernie sanders is the one to beat right now and about to run away with that and so will they focus their attention on michael bloomberg again because he has attribute that is they think that the democratic party does not want in a nominee or will they say the same of sanders and decide he's the front-runner, we have to go after him. jillian: that debate was definitely one of the most excite to go watch that we have seen so far so curious to see how tuesday ends up playing out especially when you have someone like a elizabeth warren throwing punches right away. you mentioned pete buttigieg, let's talk about him for a second, pete buttigieg did really well better than a lot of people expected him to do in

iowa and new hampshire, obviously didn't exactly carried that momentum into nevada, we saw bernie sanders run away with that, but, still, someone oh like pete buttigieg has been knocked for a while about not having those nonwhite votes, about needing to gain more traction there and then as you look ahead to south carolina as we just talked about, do you think someone like him is able to get some of those votes from bernie sanders? >> well, pete buttigieg has also been focusing his resources on other states that will vote on super tuesday and the voters that he does best against. so he is now running digital ads in counties that voted for donald trump in 2016 but had voted for barack obama before that and he's making an argument that he can win, quote, unquote, future former republican voters, so really trying to pick up some votes now from people who might be voting in this democratic presidential primary who may otherwise be independent or lean right because he is a more

moderate of the candidates and thinks he can win votes there. jillian: before we let you know, you have a piece out right now that republicans that don't want to vote for donald trump, who are they going to vote if bernie sanders ends up being the guy on the democratic side or the person i should say on the democratic side, a lot of people don't want to vote for a socialist, so do you think that there may be a lot of people out there who don't vote, i know it's early to ask that but that's kind of what you have to think about right now. >> some of the people i spoke to to be clear said that they would vote for bernie sanders and these are current or former republicans who are not going to vote for donald trump, they said they are not voting for donald trump, but they also some of them also said that they couldn't vote as you said for bernie sanders and they are open to voting for a democrat in the general election if that is a more moderate democrat, bloomberg, buttigieg, a biden or a klobuchar is what they were telling me and, of course, there's always going to be a question of how much of a problem is that for donald trump, he is at 49% in the

nominee. >> they've underestimated him and we have great deal of respect that he truly believes in what he's saying, voters see him as authentic, so just like president trump as somebody direct, sand freers the left, radical left is the same thing and he's coming at it in a party where when we asked earlier this year do you think socialism is more fair capitalism, the democrats think socialism is more fair, so he's riding that wave and the sentiment. eric: when you're talking about sanders, let me read you something from the washington post in terms of pollsters, quote, on capitol hill democrats have been circulating and unflattering private poll paid by a rival presidential candidate that test negative messages against sanders among voters in 6 presidential swing states, quote, bernie sanders is a socialist who supporting un-american big government plans that will spend trillions of dollars, lead to higher taxes and destroy our way of life reads one line of the polling

test, john, this is a democratic question, this is -- this sounds like you guys. >> it's not us, by the way, it's the democratic establishment and they are out of touch with heartland of america and that's why president trump won historic election in 2016 and that's why we can get reelected out if we can get message out and get through the press. for them to panic like that and start eating their own, they are losing the center and we will occupy the center and we are working hard to pick up more voters and exspanned coalition, the president is not just working his base, he's expanding his coalition, we will get more african-american votes, we will get more latino votes, we will get stronger as this election progresses. eric: what do you do with sanders, do you poll socialism, do you talk about honeymoon in the soviet union, support for el castro. what do you do?

what type of questions do you poll about sanders? >> we government capitalism and socialism, we have seen the president's job approval going up and job approval has been positive in the battleground states particularly in battleground states that he's won. that's all published, it's on the website. >> where can people go for that? i know it's early and we just have sanders coming off of two wins, he has south carolina next sad and super tuesday, what do you predict? >> there's a debate on tuesday that's critical for mike bloomberg, he got crushed in the last debate, 20 million people watched it. that's a lot when you think that hillary clinton got 65 million voters, a lot of the democrat voters are watching it, sanders who is a good debater and practice, it's going to be a

very important debate and friday the president comes in and does a rally in south carolina, talking about record low unemployment, created 7 million jobs and trade deals that help a lot of the states that were early in the primary calendar, and at the same time i think you're seeing, the thing that's unreported the president solidified the republican base and in new hampshire he went with record amount, people forgot we had a primary but the trump voters came out and so you're seeing a strong president with a solid base who is now broadening that coalition to make it a majority coalition. >> he's sneaking in night before on these events. >> it's not sneaking in. democracies, john, do you think this would hold? >> well, i think we can probably get through this 7 days eric even if it's not a truce cease fire, reduction in violence, nobody is quite sure what that means and both sides have interest in getting through this and signing a deal that begins to withdraw u.s. forces from that country which is clearly what president trump wants, he -- he ran on a promise of winding down these endless wars in afghanistan in particular, i think he wants to show real progress by the time of the elections and the taliban, of course, wants u.s. forces out so they can eventually have their way, provide some kind of decent intern -- interval to the united states and my guess is they have every intention to bringing down experiment in afghan democracy. eric: so really like a holding

pattern for them. here is what the top u.s. military commander in afghanistan, general austin scott miller says, quote, it's abobservable trends showing reduction of violence and i'm confident we would be able to understand that on a daily basis and as things go on we will have a better understanding of what the trends are, sounds like officials don't know if the taliban will hold up their part of the bargain? >> yeah, i think, listen, it's very opaque and very vague, i think everyone has an interest in allowing the 7 days to pass to say that there haven't been any major incidents, there's little bill of fighting on the margins, hopefully no u.s. troops would be killed because i think that would be the real -- real problem for this deal, but listen, 7 days is nothing and a 19-year conflict, the taliban are determined to come back to reestablish their own islamic emirate, we are in line with

al-qaeda, they are supposed to renounce al-qaeda as part of this deal and begin fighting al-qaeda, i will believe it when i see it, we haven't seen that yet for sure. eric: what we've pour intoed the country and the effort against radical islamic terrorism, what would you predict and what would you like to see? >> of course, like everybody i -- i wish and pray for peace, nobody wants to leave our forces over there longer than they have to be there, though, the issue is can you resolve this conflict in a way that allows us to bring most of our troops homes and yet we don't recreate the conditions that necessitated us going to afghanistan in the first place, that's the trick and whether we have the breath and the stamina to lead sufficient force there to continue to conduct the kinds of counter terrorism mission that is we need to conduct against al-qaeda and isis and
